Derek Jeter - The Captain ᴴᴰ (Best Career Tribute)
Derek Jeterwas famously private as player, but he"s never made any secret of his desire to own a baseball team.
On Tuesday, news broke that Jeter and his partner, Jeb Bush, had won the auction for the Miami Marlins for a cool $1.3 billion. Current owner Jeffrey Loria, a New York art dealer and lifelong Yankeesfan, purchased the team for $158 million in 2002. Forbes has valued the organization at $940 million
So, a natural question: Why does the retired Yankees shortstop think he"d be good at the job?
Well, we asked jeter that in September 2014, with just about week left until he ended his playing career.
Here"s what he said:
Players on Jeter, the owner
Q: What would make you a good owner? Why would you be attractive to a potential ownership group?Depends on the group I guess. I"d like to think I"m a little bit experienced. I"d like to think I"ve learned some things. I understand the patience. I understand the ups and downs. And I understand you have to stay on an even keel. Patience is the key.
Q: What makes you believe you have the type of patience necessary for an ownership position? How do I think? Because I"ve been patient with you guys (the media) for 20 years. You learn things. I think I learned a lot from The Boss (late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner) when I was young. There"s still a lot of things to learn. But I"d like to think I"m capable.
