A look back at Kirk Douglas" most famous sexual conquests

Kirk Douglas 100th birthday at MPTF 95th anniversary

Renowned ladies man Kirk Douglas wasnt prepared to dish on his sexual exploits during his appearance on the d**k Cavett show in 1971 to hawk his latest movie, A Gunfight.

But Cavett, a sly night-show host, knew viewers werent interested in Douglas new Western. They wanted to know if the very married hunk was bedding all those gorgeous Hollywood actresses.

Was he fooling around with Faye Dunaway on the set of The Arrangement? What about Kim Novak?

Cavett told him that ABC had compiled a film of all the incredible number of women that have passed through your hands and he directed the actor to watch a series of clips of himself romancing co-stars Lana Turner in The Bad and the Beautiful, Jean Simmons in Spartacus, Ava Gardner in Seven Days in May and, of course, Dunaway.

(Alfred) Hitchcock said in an interview once that its very hard for the romance on screen not to carry over into the private lives of the actors, Cavett said coyly. Have you found this true?

Douglas thumped in anger, An actor is supposed to immerse himself in the role!

At the time, Douglas who turns 100 years old on Friday was the biggest star on the planet, with a range that blew away audiences, whether he was wielding a sword against the Romans as Spartacus or crying in anguish as Vincent van Gogh in l**t for Life.

He didnt have to answer to Cavett or anyone, for that matter.

It would be another two decades before the man who still commands a standing ovation when he enters a room would finally admit to his infidelities.

In a titillating autobiography written when he was 71, Douglas admitted that hed not only cheated on his first wife, Diana Dill with whom he had two sons, including mega-star Michael Douglas but he also messed around on his current wife, Anne Bydens, who gave him another two sons.

Before the marriages, and in between, the man born Issur Danielovitch to a poor Jewish family in Amsterdam, NY, was unquenchable.

Im a sonofabitch, plain and simple, he admitted in his 1988 autobiography, The Ragmans Son.

Douglas opened his little black book and ticked off some of the greatest names to grace the silver screen.

The actor kissed and told on Crawford, Linda Darnell, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Evelyn Keyes, Marilyn Maxwell, Patricia Neal, Ann Sothern and Gene Tierney.

As I look back, I realize that somehow I was attracted to women who were neurotic, he said.

It began with his English teacher, a Mrs. Livingston, who seduced him when he was 14, he said.

A few years later as he struggled to become an actor, he enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and his eyes fell on a sultry blond woman named Betty Bacall.

Douglas said Bacall, who would later change her first name to Lauren, teased the impoverished student about the shabby, oversize overcoat he wore so she got him a new one.

I was always touched by that act, wrote Douglas. And how did I repay her? One warm spring evening on a rooftop in Greenwich Village I tried to seduce her. Unsuccessfully. As far as Im concerned, Lauren Bacall can do no wrong.

The thrice-Oscar-nominated actor was no gentleman, however, when he tucked into a tale about the night he spent with Mildred Pierce actress Joan Crawford, who would also later be trashed by her adopted daughter, Christina Crawford, in her book, Mommie Dearest.

He went out with Crawford just once, he said and never called her again.

Crawford played an innocent flirt throughout their dinner, he said. But the instant the front door of her Hollywood mansion closed behind them, she tore off her dress, flung it aside and grappled Douglas to the foyer floor.

Douglas said Crawfords move was too aggressive to be exciting, and when they were doing the deed, he noticed her bad breath.

Afterward, Crawford, a famous dirt-a-phobe, took him on a tour of the multi-level home, where Douglas noticed how immaculate it was.

She took me upstairs and proudly showed me the two children how they were strapped so tightly to their beds, how she diapered them so efficiently. It was so professional, clinical, lacking in warmth, like the s*x we had just had.

Douglas added: I got out fast.

Another one of Douglas conquests was gorgeous redhead rita hayworth. douglas said he found the star beautiful, but very simple, unsophisticated.

She would tell him, Men go to bed with Gilda [her famous 1946 title role], but they wake up with me. Douglas wrote, I felt something deep within her that I couldnt help loneliness, sadness something that would pull me down; I had to get away.

To him, Hayworth was a fantasy created by Hollywood, like Marilyn Monroe. On the screen, Douglas said, Monroe was the sexiest woman in the world. In real life she was blah. And always late.

One of his favorite conquests was Gene Tierney, known for her icy, Oscar-nominated sociopath performance in Leave Her to Heaven.

Douglas dished about some of Tierneys odd habits including insisting that he visit her by climbing into the window of her Hollywood home and mount her when she wasnt expecting it.

Maybe it was an aphrodisiac, Douglas wrote. I didnt question it. Mine was not to question why; mine was just to get through that window.

Then there was the affair with Patricia Neal.

In her own memoir, the Oscar-winning actress wrote of the love affair she had with married leading man Gary Cooper.

When it came to s*x, Douglas admits he looked at it as if he were on a big game safari in Africa.

But Douglas rounded out the picture: Neal was having an affair with him at the same time.

Douglas said Neal was in love with Cooper and would cry during their trysts because she was being unfaithful to the High Noon actor.

Sexy brunette Ava Gardners beauty took his breath away.

Douglas remembered staying at a hotel one night when he was awakened by a knocking. He opened the door to find the distraught actress.

Although Douglas had dated her a few times and found her a wonderful country girl who was cursed by being too beautiful, now she scared him because she was dating the tumultuous Frank Sinatra.

They must have had one of their usual explosions and she rushed out, wrote Douglas. It was about 2 oclock in the morning.

She didnt know where to go and ended up at my door. . . . She was quite upset and we chatted for about 10 minutes. She calmed down. She sighed, and got up. I walked her to the door, kissed her on the cheek and she left. No mention was ever made of her nocturnal visit.

When it came to s*x, Douglas admits he looked at it as if he were on a big game safari in Africa.

I looked at something and BANG! I had total control. I enjoyed [killing]; the Masai gave me a shield and a spear and called me Killer Douglas.

In fact, he said he once used s*x to punish a woman he knew was an anti-Semite.

He said he took the woman to bed, keeping the fact he was Jewish a secret until the climatic moment, when he screamed:

I am a Jew! You are being f by a Jew!

Kirk Douglas, el eterno gladiador cumple 100 aƱos

actor kirk douglas, known for his work in films like Spartacus and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, turns 100 on Friday.

Born Issur Danielovitch to Russian-Jewish parents in New York, Douglas went on to become one of the 20th centurys most famous movie actors. Douglas first felt the rush of audience appraisal while recitingThe Red Robin of Springin kindergarten.

Something happened when I heard applause. I loved it. I still do, he wrote years later.

To improve his prospects as an actor, Douglas graduated from college in 1939 followed by film school in 1941.

Five years later his debut role inThe Strange Love of Martha Ivers(1946) was started to a career which has seen him star in more than 90 television and films.

Although the play was not a smash hit, Douglas passion for Broadway kept the show running for six months.

Despite his success as a Hollywood movie star, Douglas passion was for the immediacy of theater.

On the stage, you give something to the audience, more comes back he recently wrote before condemning the camera as a cyclops that leaves him feeling empty.

Nevertheless, it was that cyclops that made him a household name during the golden era of classic Hollywood films.

He last acted in the 2008 movieEmpire State Building Murders.

Douglas has been married twice and has four children including eldest son Michael.

Warren Beatty Honored by Kirk Douglas, Don Cheadle at Santa Barbara Fete

C"est quoi Kirk Douglas ? - Blow Up - ARTE

GOLETA, Calif. Kirk Douglas, Rules Dont Apply star Lily Collins and Don Cheadle turned out to salute Warren Beatty at the Santa Barbara International Film Festivals Kirk Douglas Award celebration of the Hollywood legend Thursday night.

The honor, annually presented at a fundraising dinner for the festival, has previously gone to stars like Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Forest Whitaker, Robert De Niro, Michael douglas, harrison ford, quentin tarantino, Ed Harris and John Travolta.

I learned more and more each day that Warren pushes you beyond what you knew you were capable of, Collins said after reading a series of observations she jotted in her diary while shooting Beattys latest film. He challenges and inspires you beyond your wildest dreams.

The 27-year-old rising star thanked Beatty for encouraging her to let go, to be present, and enjoy all the details along the way. If you taught me one thing its that the stories of our lives are made up of endless rewrites and as long as were surrounded by characters we admire, our stories will always be filled with love and inspiration.

Cheadle, who presented the honor, kept the crowd in stitches while noting Beattys towering bona fides: the eight films Beatty has produced have earned 53 nominations, while he remains the only person to be twice nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an actor, writer, director and producer of the same film. Usually when you wear all of those hats, one of them falls off, Cheadle said. But Warren wears them all handsomely.

One of those two films that yielded record Oscar numbers for Beatty was Reds, and Cheadle noted the multi-hyphenate could have stopped there and retained all the credibility and mystique of an Orson Welles.

The b***s it must have taken, Cheadle said. Imagine the pitch meeting: So listen, Im thinking of making a three-hour, 20-minute movie set around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution. Its going to be in English, Russian and German. Our main protagonist is a left-wing journalist enamored with communism, so much so that Diane Keaton is going to fall in love with his idealism more than with him, and were going to release it wide two or three thousand screens in the heart of Ronald Reagans rise in popularity. Its going to take about two-and-a-half million feet of film, a year or two, probably, to edit, and its going to cost three times as much as the original Star Wars to make. So, you guys in? You want to do it?

Cheadle, who starred in Beattys 1998 political satire Bulworth, mentioned that Beatty always has a vision, but he respects the fact that his collaborators have theirs as well. He called Beatty a master of the unconventional, and marveled at how each of his films as a director stands as a singular accomplishment in his filmography, never treading the same water.

In lesser hands, Bulworth would have been written off as silly, an old white guy doing hip-hop, Cheadle said. But under Beattys direction, the big laughs are complemented by sharp social commentary, never forced, or worse, didactic. In lesser hands d**k Tracy is just another comic book exploitation, but under Warrens watchful eye it becomes a dazzling primary-color art piece packed with emotion and action and actual real resonance.

Cheadle called Beatty our Ted Williams, pointing out his staggering batting average, and remarked that the legend has outshined, outwitted and outlasted all of his contemporaries.

He also drew attention to Beattys efforts in the realm of politics. Warren took a year off from one of the highest points in his career to join the McGovern campaign, which was probably an early indicator that big name Hollywood celebrities actually have no effect in persuading the electorate, Cheadle quipped.

As a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cheadle even feigned bewilderment that Beatty has been in this business nearly 60 years and somehow never made a sequel. How is that even possible, he asked. Ive done seven of them. When is Shampoo 2 coming out? Brazilian Blowout."

And while Beatty has been called a playboy, Cheadle said, his 25-year marriage to Annette Bening is enviable and a true accomplishment in Hollywood. Beatty, in receiving the honor, remarked about that as well.

Twenty-five years ago I brilliantly convinced the worlds best actress to marry me, Beatty said. I became a devoted husband and father, and I have to say that it has given me the most enthralling years of my life with our four fantastic kids.

Beatty noted that Douglas, who sent pre-recorded sentiments and will celebrate his 100th birthday on Dec. 9, was an inspiring influence when he first arrived in Hollywood in 1958. I could see clearly about you the possibilities and the reality of producing and acting in a movie at the same time, he said.

Ultimately, the evening provided for Beatty the opportunity to look at his life and career through an uncommon prism.

When you look at movies you made a long time ago, it does give a person a unique view of himself to contemplate, he said. But my life remains about movies as an art form, and politics as a life form, and enjoying the access that fame has given me to get to know the people that I wanted to know and the places that I wanted to go and one of those places is Santa Barbara! Who wouldnt want to go to Santa Barbara?
