If youre in the market for a new microwave this Labor Day, youre in luck. Retailers are putting appliances on sale, figuring students heading to college will need them.

And if you need a new car for your growing family, youre also in luck. Car sales have been weak, so dealers might be willing to deal.

Theyll have to get rid of some of their inventory because August was rather weak and theyre going to use Labor Day as a starting point to do that, said Chris Christopher, director of consumer economics at IHS Global Insight.

Whatever you do, dont shop for clothes or jewelry today. Those things dont go on sale until Black Friday.
