NBC Hosts Tony Bennett And Michael Buble Back-To-Back Specials

NBC will warm up the season next week with specials featuring two music icons. Michael Buble and Tony Bennett will air back-to-back specials on Tuesday, December 20.

First up is Michael Buble Sings and Swings which was recorded in front of a live audience in Manchester, England. During the special, Buble is not only backed by his own band, but also 50 members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. NBC says that he performs at his absolute best. Some of the music featured in the special include Nobody but Me, Always on My Mind, Home, G*d Only Knows, and Feeling Good.

Michael Buble is a four-time Grammy winner, has had five No. 1 albums on the Billboard Top 200 pop charts, and has sold more than 55 million albums to date.

Michaels TV special was taped in October of this year. Shortly thereafter, he learned that his son had been diagnosed with cancer. On November 4, Michael posted his message on his personal website:

We are devastated about the recent cancer diagnosis of our oldest son Noah who is currently undergoing treatment in the US. We have always been very vocal about the importance of family and the love we have for our children. Luisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well. At this difficult time, we ask only for your prayers and respect for our privacy. We have a long journey in front of us and hope that with the support of family, friends and fans around the world, we will win this battle, G*d willing.

Following the Michael Buble special is the two-hour Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come hosted by Alec Baldwin. Filmed last September at New Yorks Radio City Music Hall, Bennett was surrounded by friends who gave special birthday tributes including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Elton John, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, Madonna, Leslie Odom, Jr., Kevin Spacey, Stevie Wonder, Rufus Wainwright, and michael buble. the telecast also features appearances by Garth Brooks, Steve Buscemi, Robert De Niro, Celine Dion, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, Wynton Marsalis, Paul McCartney, John McEnroe, Miss Piggy, Regis Philbin, Keith Richards, Don Rickles, Homer Simpson, Carrie Underwood, Bruce Willis, Oprah Winfrey, and Trisha Yearwood.

Tony Bennetts birthday party will also include segments of Bennett reminiscing about different events he has experienced over the last 90 years punctuated with archival footage and photos.

In celebration of the Tony Bennett special, a companion CD, Tony Bennett Celebrates 90, has been created featuring the musical performances of the night and will be released ahead of the broadcast on Friday, December 16. The companion package also comes with a 28-page booklet that contains appreciation essays by other well-known celebrities including President Bill Clinton, Martin Scorsese, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mandel, Bill Charlap, and Everett Raymond Kinstler. A deluxe version will also be available containing three CDs that contain rare and even never-before-released archival studio and live Tony Bennett recordings. The deluxe set will only be available through Amazon.

Michael Buble has a lot of work cut out for him if he wants to catch up to Tony Bennett. Bennett has won 19 Grammy awards in different genres and styles. He has created 57 studio albums, 11 live albums, 31 compilation albums, and 81 singles. As if that wasnt enough, Bennett also holds the distinction of being the oldest musical artist to place an album at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200. He did that when he was still a young 88 years old.

Michael Buble Sings and Swings begins at 8:00 p.m. followed by Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, on NBC.

Singer Michael Bubl revealed Friday that his 3-year-old son, Noah, has cancer.

The singer broke the news on his Facebook page, where he issued a joint statement with his wife, Argentine model and actress Luisana Lopilato.

We are devastated about the recent cancer diagnosis of our oldest son Noah who is currently undergoing treatment in the US, Bubl said. We have always been very vocal about the importance of family and the love we have for our children.

The Canadian singer did not reveal what kind of cancer his son has. He and his wife also have a younger son, Elias, who was born in January.

Luisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well, the singer continued. Childhood cancers make up less than 1 percent of all cancers diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society. After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children aged 1 to 14. About 1,250 children younger than 15 years old are expected to die from cancer in 2016.

The audience quickly guessed that the someone in question was Noah, then two, the eldest of two boys Michael shares with his actress wife of five years,Luisiana Lopilato.

Michaelthenplucked the youngster whom he affectionately addressed as No-man from the crowd and lifted him to the stage, much to the delight of onlookers, who called out the tots name and exclaimedWe love Noah! and Hes the cutest thing ever.

Little Noah seems shy at first, burying his face in his dads shoulder as Michael tries to get him to join in a rendition of his hit Nobody But Me.

Michael and Luisiana announced Noah had been diagnosed with cancer in an emotional Facebook post Friday.

The couple have put their careers on hold to devote their time and attention to Noah, who is undergoing treatment in the US.

Michael Buble: You know, what better place to celebrate Christmas than Los Angeles, you know? When I think of Christmas, I think sunshine, palm trees, leaving fajitas for Santa Claus [laughs].

You know what? Every year has been a different place. Every year has been a different challenge and I think it"s kind of cool seeing Christmas from the perspective of different places all over this beautiful planet that we have. I"ve had a Christmas special in the U.K., a Christmas special, obviously, in New York; I"ve come home to Vancouver and now in beautiful Hollywood. So either I"m incredibly brave or I owe the first four places money.

Zap2it: In your special two years ago, you did a terrific improv version of "Blue Christmas."

Michael Buble: Yeah, I remember we opened with that. That wasn"t even supposed to be our opening, by the way. We had a completely different opening but we were messing around in the hallway and we went, "You know what? This could be fun. This could be a fun way to start the thing."

Zap2it: Do you have anything like that this year?

Michael Buble: Yeah, we do, actually. One of the things that I love most about this special is getting to connect via social media with the fans and fans all over the world. So we did that again this year and this year Tori Kelly actually joined me in one of those moments where someone asks for a certain song and I thought it"d be great to do it with her, so I asked her if she was up for it and it was very impromptu. She came up and did it and it"s always my favorite part, to be honest with you. I really love doing it and it"s cool ...

Ariana Grande and Barbra Streisand impress Michael Buble equally

It was a totally organic moment that became a memorable one.

Michael Buble and his band were warming up in a hallway backstage during taping of his 2013 NBC Christmas special in his hometown of Vancouver when a producer overheard it, loved it and told him it should be in the show. The impromptu rendition of "Blue Christmas" became an incredibly strong opening number.

"It's funny, isn't it?" says Buble, who will host his fourth Christmas special when "Michael Buble's Christmas in New York" airs Wednesday (Dec. 17), on NBC. "Sometimes you have all these great techniques in miking and sound engineering and all of this, and then you just sit onstage with a bunch of guys and you hold a microphone over everybody and just let them go. Sometimes the simple things work best."

In fact, it worked so well that Buble is making it a more prominent part of this year's show, an unplugged section in which the Canadian crooner and his band will perform requests from his social media followers. As for the rest of the show, the hour-long special, which was taped at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in October, features the multiple Grammy Award winner welcoming guests Barbra Streisand, Ariana Grande, Miss Piggy and the Rockettes, with song selections including such holiday classics as "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

For Buble, getting Streisand -- a Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner -- was a major coup.

"You can imagine ... the high-fiving that went on in my office," Buble tells Zap2it. "I think she told me that it was 53 years or something that she's never done anything like this, and it meant a lot to me. ... It meant that she liked me as much as I like her, and I just have so much respect for her. She is someone who has never compromised the integrity of her art, ever -- ever -- and including this special. And she doesn't do it in a heavy-handed, mean way. She's just very honest and very real."

Buble was also impressed by Grande, the 21-year-old actress and singer best known for her role in Nickelodeon's "Sam & Cat" and her top 10 single "The Way." Her vocal range has been compared to that of Mariah Carey.

"Ariana Grande ... walked in and blew everyone away," Buble says. "Number one, her voice. I didn't know. I don't know any more when I listen to music who's for real and who's not. There's so much great work done with production that they can turn pretty much anybody into a singer. So when she walked up on stage -- I can speak for the boys in my band -- we were all blown away. Up walks this girl, this tiny, little thing, and she just killed us, she was so good."
