John Ross knew he was capable of a fast 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine, but the fastest ever? The wide receiver out of Washington said Friday he was going to give it a shot.
Im going to try, Ross said, per the Seattle Times. I dont want to say too much, [that] Im just everything. But Im definitely going to try. Im definitely going to go for it.
And on Saturday he went out and did it, running the 40 in 4.22 seconds to break the combine record of 4.24 set by Cardinals running back Chris Johnson in 2008.
There was a little bit of debate about his exact time.
But its going to go down as the official record.
And there probably have been similarly fast times, just not at the combine.
The quick pace most likely erased any lingering doubts about his surgically repaired right knee. ross, whose previous best 40 time was 4.25, missed the entire 2015 season with a torn ACL but returned in 2016 and had 81 catches for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns (only Louisiana Techs Carlos Henderson and Western Michigans Corey Davis had more). Plus, Ross told the NFL Network that he was fighting off cramps before the run.
If only he had been wearing Adidas. The shoe company promised either an island or a million dollars to anyone wearing its shoes who broke Johnsons 40 record at the combine. Alas, Ross was wearing Nike.
