Teuvo Teravainen eager to help offset the loss of Patrick Kane

SUNRISE, Fla. Teuvo Teravainen doesnt expect to make up for Patrick Kanes absence all by himself. But it doesnt mean he wont try.

I dont feel pressure, but I know I have a chance to step in and make a difference, the Blackhawks rookie said. Just play my best and try to help the team.

With Kane out for about 12 weeks and with general manager Stan Bowman still in pursuit of veteran forwards before Mondays trade deadline, Teravainen returned to the NHL and the Hawks lineup Thursday night against the Florida Panthers.

Teravainen was back with Bryan Bickell and Andrew Shaw, with whom he played most of the time during his previous 15-game stint with the Hawks. Only this time, he was centering them, playing his natural position instead of right wing.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said it will be incumbent on all four lines to pick up the scoring with Kane who was tied for the league lead in points when he suffered a broken clavicle on Tuesday sidelined.

There are some lines here that havent scored a lot lately, Quenneville said. If we get some sprinkled-in goals from everyone, thats what were really looking for.

Teravainen hopes to be a part of that, while continuing to play responsible defense. He had two goals and two assists in his 15 games with the Hawks.

I think we have good lines on our team that can score, he said. We need to play good defense, thats for sure. But I think we can have some offense, too. I want to play good on the offensive side, and make some plays and create some chances. Im excited to come back here. Lets get back to work.

Minor dealThe Hawks made a small trade on Thursday, swapping minor-league journeymen by sending defenseman T.J. Brennan to Toronto for forward Spencer Abbott. Brennan, who was part of the Nick Leddy trade with the Islanders, was Rockfords leading scorer with 36 points in 54 games. But at age 25 and in his sixth year in the AHL, he was unlikely to crack the NHL lineup.

As for the looming deadline, sources said Bowman was discussing possible deals with Arizona for Antoine Vermette, and Columbus for Cam Atkinson, among others. Quenneville said he believes in the lineup he has, even without Kane, but that youre always looking to get better.

We like our team, we like our locker room, we like our depth, he said. As an organization youre always talking about things. Anything that can improve your team, you look at. And I think thats probably where were at right now.

Play it smartQuenneville said he didnt want the Hawks doing anything foolish in search of retribution for Floridas Alex Petrovic, whose cross-check resulted in Kane falling into the boards and getting injured.

Youve got to be smart, Quenneville said. The priority is to win the hockey game. Play the right way. You cant worry about that stuff.

Keep the gloves onThe Internet was atwitter on Thursday after a Fox Sports personality sent out a cryptic tweet about a recent locker room fist-fight and a divided Hawks dressing room. Three sources told the Sun-Times that no such fight occurred, and Quenneville shot down the idea that theres any discord among the team.

If there is, I know nothing about it, he said. I dont think anybody knows anything about it. Its all news to me and I dont think theres anything there.

Injury sidelines Patrick Kane

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Blackhawks have placed Patrick Kane on long-term injured reserve and recalled forward Teuvo Teravainen from Rockford of the American Hockey League.

The Blackhawks also assigned Trevor van Riemsdyk to their top minor league affiliate. The rookie defenseman, who had left knee surgery in November, likely will return after a conditioning stint with the IceHogs.

Kane, who leads Chicago with 27 goals and 37 assists, left Tuesday nights 3-2 shootout victory over Florida with an upper-body injury.

The Blackhawks were traveling to Florida on Wednesday and did not provide an update on how long the dynamic winger would be sidelined. But the spot on long-term injured reserve means he will be out for at least 10 regular-season games and 24 days.

5 Times Madonna Has Bounced Back

Madonna took a nasty fall during her finale number during the 2015 BRIT Awards on Wednesday night, but then got back up to finish the performance without disruption. The pop icon later reacted to the accident on Instagram, writing nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up. Its not the first time fans have watched her resilience pull her through tough times. Here are 5 other moments Madonna made a flawless rebound.

1. Swept Away

This 2002 remake of a 1974 classic was a colossal critical and box office bomb. Madonnas then-husband, Guy Ritchie, directed the film and she starred. Reviews were so bad the film only holds a 5% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and rumors swirled that the director of the original left the theater sobbing. But Madge held her head up, defending Ritchies work. I think the knives were going to come out for Guy anyway, even if he hadnt ended up with me, she said. He had too much success with his first two films. Thats how the media is: eventually they have to pull you down.

2. Public marital problems with Sean Penn

When Madonna and Penn were married back in the 1980s, they were so volatile the media dubbed them the Poison Penns. After a series of altercations, the situation reached a boiling point at the end of 1988. One tabloid reported claimed Penn broke into Madonnas home, tied her up and beat her viciously for hours until she finally escaped. She never pressed charges, but she did file for divorce a few weeks later. Shortly after, she signed a lucrative deal with Pepsi and debuted her smash-hit, Like a Prayer.

3. The Britney/Madonna/Christina Kiss

At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna kissed both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a performance of Like a Virgin and Hollywood. Many stars instantly, and vocally, disapproved. Rock icon Stevie Nicks called it the most obnoxious moment in television history. But Madonna had been planning the moment for a long time, it turns out, and it was perfectly calculated to become legendary. Nicks herself, in her criticism, had to admit, Madonna will be fine. Madonna is Madonna. She does what she wants.

4. Fan Art Instagram gaffe

To promote her upcoming album Rebel Heart, Madonna posted fan-created artwork to her Instagram that featured Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela incorporated into her album art. This #rebelheart had a dream! she wrote beneath the picture of King. An immediate social media outcry followed as observers criticized her comparing herself to famous freedom fighters. She responded with only a half-apology, hitting back at her detractors, This is niether a crime or an insult or racist! Her album, most of which is now available due to two major leaks, has gone on to be one of the best-received in recent years.

5. The Rebel Heart album leak

Madonna intended to release her first single, Living for Love, on Valentines Day, but due to a series of album leaks, she had to release six songs early. The singer called the theft an act of terrorism. A suspect was arrested last month. In the wake of the December leaks and a few more minor ones, Madonna has gone on to receive praise for her awards show performances, which, until Wednesday, were generally without incident.

Zendaya vs Giuliana Rancic and winning the dreadlock battle

Zendaya is drop-dread gorgeous.

But when the 18-year-old actress wore dreadlocks to the Oscars on Sunday night, E! host Giuliana Rancic mocked her on Fashion Police with a comment so offensive that it immediately became a perfect metaphor for the 2015 lily-white Oscars.

I feel like she smells like patchouli oil or maybe weed, Rancic said on Monday.

And there it was: A white woman telling a black woman how to wear her hair.

Zendaya quickly responded on social media and immediately took back the story with her thoughtful response.

There is already harsh criticism of African-American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair, Zendaya wrote on Monday.

She added that she consciously chose the dreadlock style on Oscar night to showcase them in a positive light (and) remind people of color that our hair is good enough.

Yet in one quip, Rancic reduced black women to a stereotype.

"I'm just appalled it's just as bad as saying black people like fried chicken and watermelon, said Bronx resident Mary Singleton, 36, who was getting her dreads touched up Tuesday at Khamit Kinks, a salon in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.

But beyond the racism, Rancic was also undermining black self-esteem and strength.

Dreadlocks are a way of life for us, says Sandra Peters, 51, who was born in Guyana and now owns Natty Dreadz in the Bronx. For women, they symbolize empowerment. For me, dreadlocks are about tapping into your roots.

Maitefa Angaza, the co-producer of the hair documentary In Our Heads About Our Hair, added that Rancics classless statement suggests that black womens beauty is not accepted.

Another irony? Rancics comment came one night after Selma, directed by dreadlock-wearing Ava DuVernay, was snubbed for best picture. And none of its acclaimed cast was even nominated.

Zendaya mentioned DuVernay, plus other dreadlock wearers such as the singer Ledisi and Harvard professor Vincent Brown, in her comment.

Brown was surprised to become a social media star, but he wasnt surprised by the conversation.

Rude comments about black peoples hair are something that goes way back in our society, Brown, who has been wearing dreads since 1991, tells the Daily News. Dreadlocks were an indication of culture and history (and) signify the consciousness that their struggle will continue.

Zendaya stood up for all of us who wear our hair in ways that may not be immediately acceptable to others, he adds.

The lack of acceptance is no doubt a lingering relic of white fear of black empowerment. But its also simple ignorance about how dreads are created. They are not, as Rancic wrongly assumed, simply a result of unwashed hair.

I wash my hair regularly, says filmmaker Angaza. I go to the salon and it gets beautifully done by experts.

Dread dread is particularly bizarre these days, given that the First Lady of New York, Chirlane McCray, proudly wears locks. Her daughter, Chiara, gets her hair touched up every so often at Khamit Kinks.

Its offensive and racist, says Anu Prestonia, the 57-year-old owner of the salon, which also serves First Daughter Chiara de Blasio. As beautifully and elegantly as (Zendaya) was dressed, how could you open your mouth and say something about her unless youre a total ignoramus.

Zendaya is anything but that. In fact, she represents a new breed of teenage celebrity. She embraces her biracial background her father is black, her mother white and fearlessly experiments with different beauty standards. The Disney star has worn her hair in a Diana Ross-like Afro, in a straight pixie cut, and in wild, unruly curls.

Zendaya is the grown-up here, says teenage behavior expert Josh Shipp, who has a daughter of his own. Heres a great role model for young girls. Her response was stunning to me she was calm, she was kind and she stood up for herself.

Like Zendaya, DuVernay came up with a creative way to respond to Rancic: Kill the controversy with kindness.

Youre beautiful, DuVernay tweeted at Zendaya on Tuesday. We bless the ignorant and wish them well.
