New Galaxy S6 benchmarks show Samsung beating its rivals including Apple

Weve already covered the launch of the Galaxy S6 and the basics of the design, but how does the device actually perform in day-to-day use? Early test results from PCMag.comare in, courtesy of Sascha Segan, and the data points to a significant performance increase for Samsungs latest platform.

Before we dive into the figures, a few caveats are in order. Samsung hasnt shipped review units yet, so these tests are run on manufacturer hardware at a trade show. That means the devices also havent been examined with a fine-toothed comb to make certain that Samsung has stopped cheating on its benchmark results. Bearing in mind that these figures should be taken with a grain of salt, lets look at the data:

Here are the single and multi-core results for Geekbenchs overall score. The Galaxy S6 is faster in single-core performance than any other CPU save Apples A8, and its multi-core performance leaves all competitors in the dust. Even Nvidias Shield tablet, which comes closest to matching the Samsung S6, is still just 66% as fast.

One thing I want to highlight from these results is the overall scaling factor of each platform how much additional performance do we see from switching to multi-core, up from single-core?

Remember, in this case, Apples A8 is just a dual-core CPU, meaning its maximum theoretical scaling performance would be 2x. If we were to evaluate scaling as a measure of peak theoretical gain, Apples A8 is at 82.5% of theoretical performance, compared to 72.5% and 76% for the Dell Venue 7 8000 and the Nvidia Shield tablet.

One thing to remember about scaling in a mobile CPU is that its a passable stand-in for heat and power generation. The LG G3 is actually a great example of this I have one, and it struggles with throttling under any kind of load. The anemic scaling we see here is a result of that problem, guaranteed.

The Galaxy S6s scaling factor, in contrast, is much stronger. It blows past the LG G3, even beats out both tablets, and equals the iPhone 6s if we normalize the comparison. The implication here is that the 14nm shift paid big dividends for Samsung and by extension, for customers.

The Galaxy S6 isnt just about CPU performance, however. GPU performance matters, too so what do we see with offscreen comparisons in GFXBench?

Here, the Nvidia Shield tablet has an easy and expected win, but the Samsung Galaxy S6 pulls into a very respectable second place, narrowly beating out the iPhone 6 on both tests. Clearly graphics performance has some chops to it, making this a respectable win for ARM and the Mali-T760 architecture.

Early performance chops

Barring substantial shenanigans on Samsungs part (something we cant rule out given the companys past behavior), the Galaxy S6 is going to be the smartphone to beat for 2015. We know Qualcomm is working on a leading-edge version of the Snapdragon 820 and its Kryo CPU, but ARMs Cortex-A57/A53 combo on 14nm clearly shines. We may not know absolute power consumption figures yet, but the superior scaling we see in these tests suggest theyll be positive.

One interesting question is whether Apple will finally jump to quad cores in the eventual A9. For years, the company has chosen to emphasize lower clock speeds and very high IPC relative to other ARM manufacturers. The LG G3 is an example of how this strategy can pay off the G3 simply cant dissipate enough heat to really tap its quad-core CPU, and its not the only phone to have this problem.

The Galaxy S6s results suggest that new phones will have a much easier time using all cores for a longer period. That could finally prompt Apple to take an upgrade, and move its A-class processor division over to a quad-core configuration.

Kevin Bacon: Working on hourlong drama 'The Following' is 'exhilarating'

NEW YORK, March 3 (UPI) -- Actor Kevin Bacon says he is happy starring in The Following because the small-screen, cult-themed thriller challenges him to really explore his character, FBI Agent Ryan Hardy, while also affording him enough time off in between seasons to make movies.

"I like it a lot. ... I still love doing movies," the 56-year-old Philadelphia native told reporters at a recent roundtable interview at New York Comic Con.

"We wrapped the season last year and I did three movies during the course of our hiatus and I never want to stop doing that because it gives me opportunities to play a whole different kind of character. That's always been my idea about what being an actor was. I'll play this guy. He's from this walk of life, wears these kinds of clothes, talks like this, walks like this. And then I can play a guy who is totally different," he explained. "What's cool about the series is that you get to inhabit somebody for such a long time that you really get to go deeper and deeper and deeper and just kind of discover more and more things about him. The second piece of it is that we shoot 14 hours almost on a regular basis and during that time I am acting, acting, acting. ... I rarely even set foot in my dressing room. That's exhilarating to me because I love to act. I love the time between action and cut and that's what I get."

Asked if he and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick -- the former star of the police procedural The Closer -- have swapped crime stories, given the themes of their shows, Bacon replied: "She's given me a lot of tips about being on an hour drama, I can tell you that, because she did it for seven years before I even started, so that was really helpful. Crime not so much."

The Following airs Monday nights on FOX.

Well, that was fast!

Netanyahu Tells AIPAC That US-Israel Alliance Is Strong

En route to what he described as a "fateful mission," Benjamin Netanyahu spent much of his 12-hour flight to Washington slouched in a business class seat laboring over a draft of his highly anticipated address to Congress. In the back of the plane, the rest of the delegation was watching "The Imitation Game," a biopic of British cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who helped break the Germans' Enigma code and aided the allies' victory in World War II.

The symbolism was hard to ignore. Netanyahu considers himself to be a visionary who foresaw the Iranian nuclear threat long ago, and hopes that blocking it from attaining a bomb will be his crowning achievement in government.

With no invitation to the White House and the vice president and secretary of state out of the country, Netanyahu kicked off the visit before a friendly home crowd Monday a pro-Israel U.S. lobby group and tried to downplay the crisis with President Barack Obama as a family spat.

"America and Israel are more than friends. We're like a family. We're practically mishpucha," he said to laughter, using the Yiddish expression for family. "Now, disagreements in the family are always uncomfortable, but we must always remember that we are family."

Despite the expressions of affection, the family spat will be on full view on Tuesday when he addresses Congress. Not only will Republican House Speaker John Boehner who invited him behind the president's back be sitting behind him, the senior Republican senator, Orrin Hatch, will be stationed where Vice President Joe Biden would normally sit.

Biden went to Latin America; Secretary of State John Kerry was in Montreux, Switzerland, meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif.

Following Monday's AIPAC speech, Netanyahu was expected to keep working on his speech till the very last minute trying to live up to the hype that has been created over the controversial address.

"You know, never has so much been written about a speech that hasn't been given," he told attendees of the American Israel Political Action Committee policy conference.

Boehner is planning a festive greeting for Netanyahu Tuesday and will present him a bust of Winston Churchill, the only other foreign leader to address Congress three times.

Netanyahu often cites Churchill as an inspiration and the world leader he most admires.

Netanyahu's office says the Israeli leader will give Boehner a menorah and a copy of the story of Purim, a Jewish holiday being celebrated this week that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire where a plot had been formed to destroy them. The gift is symbolic in that Iran has vowed to annihilate Israel.

Watch Ronda Rousey beat Cat Zingano in 14 seconds in UFC 184 (updated)

On Friday, Ronda Rousey tweeted that she had never been more ready in her life for her UFC 184 championship fight against Cat Zingano and, on Saturday night, the world learned just what that meant.

Zingano came out charging and Rousey floored her with an armbar, winning the bantamweight fight in 14 seconds in the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was tied, according to UFC, for the fastest submission in UFC history and was the fastest win in a UFC title fight.

It was a stunningly quick finish, even for a fighter of Rouseys unquestioned ability, and it came against Zingano, one of the few fighters believed to have a chance at ending her undefeated streak. But Rousey (11-0 in Mixed Martial Arts, 5-0 in UFC) extended her dominance of 2014, when she needed 1 minute, 22 seconds in two fights combined to defend her belt.

[Related:What's next forRousey? A movie, then another fight]We expected she might do something like flying right at me . . . but I have faster transition than anyone because my mom taught me, Rousey said afterward (via the Los Angeles Times) of her judo-fighting mother.

Zingano (9-1) was ready to go at it again, in spite of the finish. I want to do it again. . . . She had my arm, I saw her leg, went to grab it, and all of a sudden, Im tapping [out], she said. I just want to do it again.

[Related: Rousey says she'd like to give Zingano a rematch]

Rouseys latest win set Twitter on fire.

You get the idea. It was a breath-taking finish. And now what does Rousey do? Well, next up is a movie role, according to the UFCs Dana White (via Fox Sports), then her next fight will be scheduled. Rousey, though, told the Washington Posts Rick Maese that she understands fighting is most important for now.

I always prioritize fighting first, Rousey said. Everything comes from fighting. The only reason Hollywood is interested in me at all is because I fight and I win. So I have to protect that.

For now, she was happy just to celebrate the moment.

According to a report by Us Weekly, Khloe and Nene Leakes are now being considered as Osbournes replacement. Incidentally, Khloe was with Kelly and Giuliana during the Oscars coverage where Zendaya sported her controversial hairstyle. Khloe has had previous experience as a host in the reality talent show X-Factor. She has also hosted a couple of radio shows and a podcast over the years.
