Why Genesis Rodriguez Wants to be the 'Latina Dustin Hoffman'

March 13, 2015 | by Jessica Chanchalashvili | People & Parties

Run All Nightstar Genesis Rodriguez shared on what its like to work with Liam Neeson, why she aspires to be the "Latina Dustin Hoffman,"and much more.

Genesis Rodriguez at the Run All Night premiere in New York City.

Genesis Rodriguez is having a good year. So far in 2015, she has watched her animated Disney film, Big Hero 6, win an Academy Award, shes starring in Run All Night opposite Liam Neeson (out today), and is gearing up for the release of her comedy-horror flick,Yoga Hosers.

We chatted with the Miami-native actress to find out how shes similar to her Big Hero 6 character, what her and Common bonded about on the set of Run All Night, and why shes hoping to be the "Latina Dustin Hoffman."

What drew you to your role in Big Hero Six?GENESIS RODRIGUEZ:I love Disney. [I grew up] only four hours away [] that was like our family vacation. Im a Disney kid, so this was a huge honor. They couldnt believe how similar I was to Honey Lemon. She is into robots and into science and she is a happy girl. And that is basically meIm kind of lanky and geeky and I have long hair. [Laughs]

What did you enjoy about making an animated film?GR:What I enjoyed the most was that I really felt like a kid. When I was working, I couldnt believe that they were actually paying me to do this. I feel pretty lucky about that. It was just so much fun; I really got to explore. Nothing was too big for animation, because you only have to rely on your acting, so it was like more and more. And I was like okayIll go there.

Run All Nightis out today. Can you tell us a little bit about the film and your character?GR:I play Gabriela, the wife of Mike Conlon [played by Joel Kinnaman]. We are a normal familywe have two kids; we have one on the way. My husband is a super hard-working guy. One night he witnesses something that goes down that he shouldnt be witnessing. His father, [played by Liam Neeson], happens to be in the mafia. He has to help him out for this one night to save himself and his family. But he is an estranged father, so it is kind of like this father and son getting back together for one night just so he can stay alive and keep his family alive.

You worked with Liam Neeson and Common on Run All Night. What was that like?GR:They are so cool, I admire them so much. Liam is such a gentlemanthe definition of a gentleman. He sat down the first day I started working with him and was just like Hey Genesis, how are you? How was your weekend? Common tooCommon is the coolest. He is super sweet and we talked about basketball, obviously Im a Miami Heat fan. I had the best time being in this movie, I felt like one of the guys.

How about any upcoming projects?GR:Yoga Hosers and then I have Home next year with Patricia Clarkson. It is a thriller, a psychological thriller. We dont know what is really happening in the movie, it is kind of cool. [And I have] some upcoming projects right now that I cant talk about because they arent 100%. Im trying to do something different every time. Big Hero 6 and Run All Night could not be any different. Im trying to be the next Latina Dustin HoffmanDustin Hoffman has never repeated himself in a character [but] you believe him in everything he does. That is what Im trying to do, thats my niche.

What is one thing that people dont know about you?GR:People may not know that I dont drivelike, I dont drive at all. I dont feel like driving, I dont want to learn how to drive, and Im too scared. And I grew up [in Miami], and you have to drive here. People are driving at 15 with their permits. I was just too much of a chicken to learn, and now Im 27. Like, who learns to drive at 27?

With NFL free agency underway, here are some early projections for the ...

The Washington Redskins were largely on the sidelines when NFL free agency got underway, so their team, at least on offense, is a known commodity.

Mike Clay from Pro Football Focus has continually updated his 2015 projections asplayers sign or are traded to new teams, and here is what he thinks the Redskins will do in 2015.

Robert Griffin III, quarterback

Barring something unexpected, Griffin likely will be the teams starting quarterback next season. He played nine games in 2014 and completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 1,694 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. Most of those passes never went more than nine yards in the air.

The projections reveal some good news and some bad news. The good news is RGIII is projected to play 16 games (dont get too excited all starters are) and pass for 3,862 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. They also predict that h**l rush for 519 yards. That would be similar production to his rookie of the year campaign in 2012. However, they also project him to be sacked a league-leading 60 times, which would rank ninth all time.

Of course, there is still the chancethe team goes in a different direction.

Alfred Morris, running back

Morris was the No. 18-rated rusher among the 23 who took at least half of their teams snaps last season. The 26-year-old ran for 1,074 yards on 265 carries with eight touchdowns but saw his yards per carry decline for the second straight season. He did have 14 runs go for 15 yards or more.

Expect more of the same from Morris: 1,183 yards on 276 carries withnine touchdowns.

DeSean Jackson,Pierre GarconandAndre Roberts, widereceivers

Garcon led the teamin targets (105) but was way behind Jackson in yards per route run.

Perhaps thats why PFFs projection system has Jackson leading the team in targets for the 2015 season.

Name Targets Recs ReYards ReTD DeSean Jackson 102 66 1092 4 Pierre Garcon 87 58 696 4 Andre Roberts 63 39 456 3 Ryan Grant 19 14 145 1

Jordan Reed, Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen, tight ends

Reed has the most upside here, but Paul was signed to a three-year contract extension worth close to $10 million. Still, the projections suggest Reed will be the better bet in terms of performance.

Parker Rice, parents of Levi Pettit apologize for 'horrible mistake' made in ...

Related

Update at 6:40 p.m.: Moments after Levi Pettits family apologized for their sons behavior in the SAE video, Parker Rice the recent Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas graduate sent his own apology, via his father Bob. Here it is in full:

I am deeply sorry for what I did Saturday night. It was wrong and reckless. I made a horrible mistake by joining into the singing and encouraging others to do the same. On Monday, I withdrew from the university, and sadly, at this moment our family is not able to be in our home because of threatening calls as well as frightening talk on social media.

I know everyone wants to know why or how this happened. I admit it likely was fueled by alcohol consumed at the house before the bus trip, but thats not an excuse. Yes, the song was taught to us, but that too doesnt work as an explanation. Its more important to acknowledge what I did and what I didnt do. I didnt say no, and I clearly dismissed an important value I learned at my beloved high school, Dallas Jesuit. We were taught to be Men for Others. I failed in that regard, and in those moments, I also completely ignored the core values and ethics I learned from my parents and others.

This sign now sits in front of the Rice house in Northwest Dallas.

At this point, all I can do is be thoughtful and prayerful about my next steps, but I am also concerned about the fraternity friends still on campus. Apparently, they are feeling unsafe and some have been harassed by others. Hopefully, the university will protect them.

For me, this is a devastating lesson and I am seeking guidance on how I can learn from this and make sure it never happens again. My goal for the long-term is to be a man who has the heart and the courage to reject racism wherever I see or experience it in the future.

Thank you for your consideration of my deepest apologies for what I did.

Bob Rice says that at the moment, we are not doing interviews.

Update at 6:17 p.m.: The family of a second Dallas-area family has confirmed their son can be seen in the now-infamous University of Oklahoma SAE video. And they are apologizing for his actions.

Moments ago The Dallas Morning News received a statement attributed to Brody and Susan Pettit, parents of recent Highland Park High School graduate Levi Pettit.

As parents of Levi, we love him and care for him deeply, says the statement, which has also been posted on this website. He made a horrible mistake, and will live with the consequences forever. However, we also know the depth of our sons character. He is a good boy, but what we saw in those videos is disgusting. While it may be difficult for those who only know Levi from the video to understand, we know his heart, and he is not a racist. We raised him to be loving and inclusive and we all remain surrounded by a diverse, close-knit group of friends.

Levi Pettit, seen here in a 2013 photo, was a star golfer at Highland Park High School (Elisabeth Dillon/File photo)

We were as shocked and saddened by this news as anyone. Of course, we are sad for our son but more importantly, we apologize to the community he has hurt. We would also like to apologize to the entire African American community, University of Oklahoma student body and administration. Our family has the responsibility to apologize, and also to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. Our words will only go so far as a family, we commit to following our words with deeds.

To our friends and family, thank you for your kind comments and prayers. They are very comforting in this difficult time.

We ask that the media and public please respect our familys privacy as we come together to heal and determine next steps.

Bill Coletti, who is serving as spokesman for the family, says they will say nothing further. He also says the family dispatched the statement since media members had begun to ask about his role in the video.

Levi Pettit was a star golfer at Highland Park.

[Editors note: This story has been updated since it was originally posted.]

University of Oklahoma President David Boren has expelled two Sigma Alpha Epsilon members captured on video singing a racist chant. The two students were identified in a statement as having played a leadership role during the bus ride caught on video. And, says the president, more students are likely to be expelled once they are identified.

One already has, and hes from Dallas.

The Dallas Morning News has confirmed that recent Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas graduate Parker Rice, a former football player at the school, was the one seen leading the chant. OU will not say if Rice was among those expelled, but Jesuit officials addressed the revelation Tuesday morning without identifying the 19-year-old by name.

In the recent video regarding OU and the SAE fraternity, it appears that a graduate from Jesuit Dallas is leading the racist chant, says a message from Jesuit Dallas President Mike Earsing. I am appalled by the actions in the video and extremely hurt by the pain this has caused our community. It is unconscionable and very sad that in 2015 we still live in a society where this type of bigotry and racism takes place.

A Jesuit spokesman would later identify Rice as one of the fraternity members seen in the video.

The statement from Jesuit came hours after several Twitter accounts, among them one linked to Anonymous, identified the leader as a Dallas native.

The OU student identified as Parker Rice, a recent Jesuit graduate

Former classmates have taken to social media to defend Rice, insisting he is a good guy and NOT a racist. But far more have suggested he better not go out in public for awhile, in the words of one user. There have been a few death threats as well.

The 19-year-old Rice has erased his social media presence; so has most of his family, including his mother, who has deleted her Facebook page. The fathers work phone number has been disconnected; the house number is not accepting any further voice mail messages.

And a recently posted story about Rice and his brothers one of whom is also a SAE member at OU was deleted this week from the Dallas schools website.

Rices father, Bob, a commercial Realtor, has deep ties to North Dallas, where the family lives. He serves on the boards of the Town North YMCA and North Dallas Chamber Baseball League and has volunteered in various capacities for those organizations over the last two decades.

Catherine Bishop, OUs vice president for public affairs, tells The News via email the school will not name the students who were expelled or involved in the video: The record information is confidential pursuant the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

The SAE chapter was shuttered Monday by University of Oklahoma president after a video surfaced Sunday night showing several young men clad in tuxedos singing about how black students would never be allowed into SAE. And the national Delta Delta Delta sorority said it too is cooperating fully with the university, since several OU Tri-Delts also appear to have been aboard the party bus.

Boren called the fraternity members disgraceful and deemed their behavior reprehensible.

Former Dallas Cowboys and University of Oklahoma head football coach Barry Switzer, an honorary SAE, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon in which he said this situation is unfortunate for the many innocent people involved.

Said Switzer, As a long-time supporter of the University and member of the SAE chapter, I know the majority of our students dont condone or participate in bigotry. These incidents are not a reflection of the true spirit of our campus. I hope that we can begin to heal the wounds by avoiding rhetoric that fuels the fire and instead spend more time thinking about how we can collectively create positive relationships and interactions among our campus family.

NFL Free Agency 2015: Grades for Tuesday Signings and Trades

Psych!

It's not just an annoying thing that children say. It's also made its way to NFL free agency in 2015.

After being linked to the Philadelphia Eagles for most of the weekend, veteran running back Frank Gore got cold feet.

Former Eagles and new Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy jokingly took credit for convincing the former 49er not to go to Philadelphia in an NFL Network segment, saying, "We talked on the phone I said, 'Frank, man, do not go to Philly, man. I will be angry with you.'" He then clarified his remarks:

Nah. We talked about Philadelphia. He did ask me a lot of questions. It was mutual. ... He asked me about Chip and the offense. ... I told him he'd get the ball a lot and he'd love it. Chip is a mastermind. He finds way to get the ball in space with the running backs. I was honest with him, for the most part.

By the time Tuesday rolled around and Gore could actually sign on the dotted line, his landing spot ended up quite a ways west of the City of Brotherly Love.

The 31-year-old signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Gore will receive $8.5 million in guarantees over the first two years of the deal.

And so ends the Trent Richardson (giggle) era in Indy.

If there was one glaring issue with the Indianapolis Colts offensively in 2014, it was in the run game. Richardson was awful (again), and while Dan Herron did the best he could, he's, well, Dan Herron.

Yes, Gore is the wrong side of 30. He doesn't seem to realize that, though, as he topped 1,100 yards on the ground last year. He's now gained over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons and eight of the last nine. For $4 million a season, it's a no-brainer for a team trying badly to keep up with the Joneses in the AFC.

Your move, Bill Belichick.

Jaguars, Raiders eyeing DeMarco Murray

After a flurry of trades, cuts and signings, DeMarco Murray remains the biggest of names left on the open market. So where will he land?

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the former Dallas Cowboys running back is receiving interest from the Philadelphia Eagles and remains "intrigued" by the concept of playing for coach Chip Kelly.

NFL Now delivers a non-stop video stream highlighting the next generation of NFL talent in preparation for the 2015 NFL Draft. Start using it now!

Murray is the second high-profile runner to land on Philly's radar after Frank Gore pulled out of a pending deal with the Eagles on Monday.

Rapoport was told that Murray took note of Tuesday's stunning trade that sent Rams quarterback Sam Bradford to the Eagles in exchange for passer Nick Foles. Murray and Bradford played together for three seasons in an Oklahoma offense that used similar up-tempo concepts to Kelly's scheme. Both players "know it extremely well," Rapoport said.

While Bradford is looking to turn the page on his underwhelming, injury-riddled career, Murray hit the open market on Tuesday at No. 4 on our list of the top 101 free agents of 2015.

The Eagles aren't alone. Rapoport noted that the Jaguars "have long been working" on Murray, while the Raiders are "making a run" despite the presence of promising third-year runner Latavius Murray. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Cowboys are "waiting if anyone shows real interest before they decide to pop in and make a final push."

Said Rapoport: "It's safe to say DeMarco Murray's market is really starting to percolate."
