Don Draper's Last Stand: Where Are the Final Episodes of Mad Men Heading?

@gliatto

04/05/2015 AT 03:30 PM EDT

Mad Men is back for the first of its seven final episodes, and Jon Hamm's Don Draper is still firmly committed to being admitted to the marble-columned pantheon of Existentially Miserable Businessmen (as Represented in American Arts and Letters).

It's hard to imagine that he won't get in by the end and join such august company as w***y Loman, Charles Foster Kane, Tony Soprano, the Wolf of Wall Street and, going back quite a stretch, Silas Lapham.

But what did we expect? If Don were the Easter Bunny, he would be sitting off in the corner of the egg hunt, nursing his scotch, smoking a cigarette and distractedly encouraging the kids as they filled their baskets. "Good one you got there, Scotty Nice, Lisa Beth, mm."

Series creator Matthew Weiner has, as he often does, urged reviewers not to spoil any of the episode's surprises. This isn't hard, since not all that much happens in Sunday's premiere. Whatever the series' ultimate conclusion, Mad Men has stuck to its peculiar tone of crepuscular heaviness.

That has been the source of much of its power: The show has been ebbing ever since it premiered.

In the course of the episode, Don dreams an erotic dream involving a woman draped in fur. The dream turns out to be deeply meaningful, even prophetic, and death-haunted. He also finds himself drawn sexually, and perhaps in a much deeper way, to a woman named Di.

It would be reassuring if Don then dated a woman named Liv, but that doesn't happen.

Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) considers taking a risk on an impulsive romantic adventure. Yes, that Peggy, the one who occasionally seems to have been raised in a Prussian military academy. But, then, to consider being impulsive is a contradiction in terms. Oh, Peggy!

Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton) is on the verge of throwing in the towel, retreating to the country and writing the Great American Novel (which, in a sense, is what Mad Men already is). Joan (Christina Hendricks) puts up with some brutal sexist jokes in a meeting. Apart from Don, she's possibly the show's most interesting character a successful businesswoman who can't trust her own success.

But Hamm, just by the way he wears a traditional suit, simultaneously looks like someone who could have been a top male model in the 1960s and also like someone condemned to work in the back offices of h**l. The mix of corporate masculinity and inner torment remains very, very potent.

The episode ends with a twist that is a genuine surprise, but not a very interesting one. Its longer-term purpose in the plot is obscure.

The episode's soundtrack includes Peggy Lee's 1969 classic "Is That All There Is?" a song of such languid, seductive nihilism that it was the subject of church sermons back in the day. This is such an obvious comment on Don at midlife it might be intended as a joke.

If Mad Men deserves to be considered a modern classic and it does we might as well admit it's almost as strange as Twin Peaks. If not stranger.

Mad Men airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kentucky guard Andrew Harrison apologized Sunday for directing an obscenity and a racial slur at Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky during a postgame news conference at the Final Four.

Harrison muttered "F--- that n----" into a live microphone when another player was asked a question about Kaminsky after Kentucky lost 71-64 to the Badgers Saturday. The loss ruined the Wildcats' undefeated season; they finished 38-1.

The sophomore's comment came as a reporter asked Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns about defending the 7-foot Kaminsky. He muttered it with his hand in front of his mouth, but the mic picked up the comments.

Social media immediately lit up with tweets about what Harrison said along with video clips, and the program looked into the matter.

Harrison said in a series of comments on Twitter that he wanted to apologize "for my poor choice of words used in jest towards a player I respect and know."

"When I realized how this could be perceived, I immediately called Big Frank to apologize and let him know I didn't mean any disrespect," he added.

He said the two of them had a "good conversation" and he wished him good luck in Monday's championship game.

Harrison had 13 points and four assists in the loss. Harrison and his twin brother, Aaron, have been projected as NBA draft picks but didn't discuss their futures after the loss.

Coach Frese, Maryland Hopes To End UConn's Run At Final Four

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Brenda Frese and her Maryland Terrapinsarent just happy to be back in the Final Four for a second straight season. They plan on sticking around through the weekend and play on Tuesday night for the national championship.

For that to happen theyll have to knock off two-time defending champion UConn on Sunday night.

Arent we tired of it, Frese said of UConns dominance. Everyones rooting for us. Some new stories, our sport needs it to be quite honest. I know there are a lot of people out there cheering and want to see Maryland beat UConn. For us and our sport it would be a great thing.

After the Terrapins won the national championship in 2006, they didnt make it back to the Final Four until last season with star Alyssa Thomas. Frese graduated five seniors, including Thomas, and few thought theyd be back so soon.

Frese said she started believing this team could be something special midway through their undefeated run through their first year in the Big Ten Conference.

This is a team that no one expected to be here, Frese said. To accomplish what they did we were written off after Alyssa graduated and our five seniors. It is a different mentality coming back with this team.

Last years team that was their goal, they were happy to be here. Thats not the goal for this years team.

Making the Final Four feels like a rite of spring for the Huskies lately as the team has appeared in the last eight national semifinals, winning four championships. Auriemma has said he believes the Huskies dominance is good for the sport, Its certainly a role the they relish.

They come to Connecticut with that expectation in mind and they either embrace that role and survive and thrive, UConn coach Geno Auriemma said.

Winning a third straight championship for the second time in school history would give Auriemma 10 in his career, tying him with vaunted UCLA mens coach John Wooden for the most titles in college basketball.

The winner of Sundays game will face either South Carolina or Notre Dame for the title on Tuesday night.

Here are some other things to watch in Sundays Maryland-UConn matchup:

DECORATED HUSKIE: Breanna Stewart won The Associated Press player of the year award for the second consecutive season Saturday. Earlier in the day she won the Wade Trophy for the first time. Despite the individual awards, Stewart was still focused on the bigger goal, winning a third title. Its the reason why we are here, to play basketball, she said. These awards are nice, but its all extra. It doesnt mean anything if we dont do what we came here for.

DAS BOOT: Stewart was wearing a walking boot on her left foot when she came to the Huskies press conference and AP awards ceremony. Shes been wearing it all season saying: The boot is nothing. Its inflammation of the sesamoid bones. Its fine.

NBA PEDIGREE: Maryland guard Lexie Brown and forward Aja Ellison met at a very early age when they were toddlers following their dads around as they played together for the Boston Celtics in the 1990s. Its a really neat story that their stories began with the Boston Celtics at the same time, Frese said. They had road trips together but dont remember it. Dee Brown and Pervis Ellison overlapped on the Celtics for a few season in the mid-1990s. Brown hasnt been able to see his daughter play too much because of his job as an assistant for the Sacramento Kings. The former slam dunk champion is taking a break from his job to come see Sundays game. Ellison has been to a handful of games this season and will be there on Sunday as well.

DOMINANT HUSKIES: Led by Stewart, the two-time most outstanding player of the Final Four, the Huskies have run through the NCAA Tournament. They won their first three games by an average of 47.6 points. Dayton gave UConn a bit of a challenge for the first 20 minutes and actually led at the half. It was the first time since 2013 that UConn trailed at the break. Connecticut was undeterred and went on to win the regional final by 21 points.

Robert Schuller: A patron of modernist architecture

He began with a drive-in church designed by Richard Neutra located just three miles from Disneyland. Over time he added a telegenic cathedral by Philip Johnson and a shimmering, cylindrical "hospitality center," with an auditorium and cafe, by Richard Meier.

Robert H. Schuller, the evangelist who died Thursday at age 88, doesn't just belong on any shortlist of Southern California's major architectural patrons. His long infatuation with high-profile architects -- "There's a place for monuments," he told the Times in 1980, adding that "if the monument can be an instrument, you've got a winner" -- produced something quite rare: a collection of buildings that has something important to say about the evolution of both modern architecture and Orange County.

In fact, when the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange purchased the campus in 2011 for $57.5 million, changing the name of Johnson's Crystal Cathedral to Christ Cathedral, it was not merely buying a foothold in a county that is home to more than a million Catholics.

It also acquired a property that, thanks to Schuller's patronage, is much more of a place an architectural ensemble than most people realize. Perhaps only on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles, where buildings by Isozaki, Gehry, Becket, Prix and Moneo line up side by side, can Southern Californians get such an efficient education in the architecture of the last half-century.

Before he hired Neutra in 1959, Schuller and his wife, Arvella, conducted services from a drive-in movie theater in Orange. He preached while standing on the roof of the concession stand.

When it was time to expand, on a 10-acre parcel in nearby Garden Grove, Schuller asked the architect, then 67 and nearing the end of his career, to produce a new building that would retain key elements of that drive-in ministry.

Neutra designed a long, low, flat-roofed church with huge movable glass walls that allowed Schuller to be seen and heard by those inside as well as in the parking lot, sitting in what the minister called the "pews from Detroit." It is far from Neutra's best work, though the experience was significant for both men. Schuller once listed the architect, along with John Calvin, Norman Vincent Peale and Billy Graham, as a key influence on his intellectual development.

Neutra's son Dion, also an architect, added a 15-story "Tower of Hope" in 1967, a vertical marker that in the words of architectural historian Thomas Hines "was more prominent than anything on the Orange County landscape except the nearby Matterhorn' at Disneyland."

A little more than a decade later Schuller wanted to expand again. He turned to Johnson and his design partner John Burgee, who at a cost of just under $20 million produced a huge room under a faceted glass ceiling, 207 feet wide, 415 feet long and 128 feet tall.

Finished in 1980, it was a cathedral designed, as Neutra's building had been, with an eye toward multiple audiences -- including, this time around, television viewers sitting at home. The glass backdrop and giant interior space of Johnson's building suggested a perfectly up-to-date tableau of modern Orange County beamed, as the Reagan years dawned, to a national audience.

Even on TV you could tell how sunny it was outside by watching the light play over Schuller's face. This was architecture that sold the appeal of Southern California on television just as the Rose Parade did every New Year's Day.

There was more than a touch of futurism in those televised images of Johnson's glittering and transparent monument. As architect Charles Moore put it in his 1984 book on Southern California, the first guide to take Orange County architecture seriously, Schuller "wanted a church embedded in nature, a bit recollective of the Garden of Eden. What he got is a church that might seem rather more at home in outer space."

But Johnson, always a kind of architectural time-traveler, was looking to historical precedents too. At an event held for architects and designers at the cathedral soon after it was completed, Johnson, then 75, quoted the German modernist Erich Mendelsohn, whose most important work came in the 1920s: "Architects will be remembered by their one-room buildings."

Johnson added that he was proud to have added this vast single room to Orange County, telling the group, "I hope to be remembered by this building."

As Neutra's office had done, Johnson waited a few years before adding a spire, giving Schuller, who spent money at the kind of clip that thrills architects and keeps church accountants up at night, time to figure out how to pay for it. Johnson's campanile, which cost $5.5 million and rises 236 feet, was completed in 1990.

Meier's addition to this collection of churches, spires and parking lots came in 2003. The cylindrical four-story building, wrapped in embossed stainless-steel panels and officiallycalled the International Center for Possibility Thinking, was a shinier version of Meier's pavilions at the Getty Center, completed six years before.

Was the Meier building the equivalent of a McMansion commissioned by a family living beyond its means? Perhaps. Schuller's church declared bankruptcy in 2010. The campus was acquired soon after by the Roman Catholic Diocese, which has hired the Los Angeles firms Rios Clementi Hale and Johnson Fain to update it.

But Meier's design also managed -- against long odds, given the differences in style and philosophy among the three architects -- to bring all of Schuller's landmarks into a cohesive whole. And it did so by banishing the car, which had been so central to Schuller's vision of an expansive, even sprawling ministry, in favor of the pedestrian, and trading the suburban design cues of Neutra and Johnson for a more civic, even urban idea of collective space.

The three buildings now consider one another across a carefully proportioned courtyard that suggests, in ways both hackneyed and effective, an Italian piazza. The Neutra and Johnson designs, meant to serve to an atomized region connected by freeways, suddenly have something to say about community.

The energy of the architecture is no longer directly entirely outward, to parking lots and television sets, but has turned inward. The courtyard is a place not for the newcomers Schuller once preached to, unwilling to leave the comfort of their cars, but for people, and buildings, that have been here a while.
