David Bowie turns 69: A journey through the iconic singer"s ever changing personas

David Bowie - Girl Loves Me (Audio)

The chameleon of pop has changed his colours immeasurable times. In a perpetual state of reinvention, David Bowie has never failed to keep his fans guessing. So much so that sometimes it can be hard to keep track of whom the real Bowie is.

With Bowie celebrating his 69th Birthday today, we look back at the different personas, which make Bowie the most enigmatic, unpredictable performer of his generation.

The Innocent Days

Born in Brixton in 1947 and bred in the leafy suburbs of Bromley, Bowie was the son of a waitress and a Barnardos charity promoter. A sandy-haired, cherub-cheeked teenager, Bowie considered becoming a monk and spent an entire year studying under a Tibetan lama. Eventually growing bored of Buddhism, Bowie went on to study music and take up jazz on his plastic saxophone. Nevertheless, a series of unsuccessful post-rocknroll bands left the aspiring star a little disheartened.

Ziggy Stardust: A Gay Icon Is Born

After releasing Space Oddity in 1969, Bowie established himself as a solo artist to be reckoned with. Just a few years later, Bowie finally broke through with Ziggy Stardust. His first and arguably greatest alter ego was born. Face daubed with a lightening bolt and mullet hairstyle dyed crimson red, Ziggy Stardust was a bisexual rock star alien who acted as a messenger for extra-terrestrial beings. Dressed in a multi-coloured Lycra jumpsuit, Bowies androgynous, wafer-thin doppelganger came to redefine an entire era of rocknroll. Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time, it went on to sell an estimated 7.5 million copies worldwide.

Its worth noting that Ziggy Stardusts arrival on the scene coincided with Bowies coming out. In an interview in the 1972 issue of Melody Maker, Bowie declared himself gay. Later, he announced he was bisexual in an interview with Playboy in 1976.

The Conventional Man

By the time it reached the 80s, Bowie had taken something of a U-turn on both his sexual and musical forays. In a 1983 interview with Rolling Stone, Bowie announced that he was always a closet heterosexual and his public declaration of bisexuality was the biggest mistake I ever made. Seeing his sexuality as a by-product of the hedonistic atmosphere of the 70s, he also distanced himself from the alter ego of Ziggy Stardust. In his words, That was just a lie. They gave me that image.

Musically Bowie reached his lowest point in the mid-eighties. The public seemed to lose interest and he found himself performing to what he describes as a Phil Collins kind of audience.

21st Century Bowie

In true Bowie spirit, the superstar has continued to reinvent himself. This can be seen with his latest album Blackstar, which has been released today on his 69th birthday. Distancing itself from the rocknroll most of us associate with Bowie, Blackstar embraces jazzy improvisations and funk fusions. With most tracks between five and ten minutes long, they are nothing like the three-minute pop songs we are used to. Although its been a decade since Bowie performed live and the singer announced that he would never tour again last October, it is clear that he hasnt given up on making music yet.

Mexican president says drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman re-arrested

Mexican Drug Lord "El Chapo" Guzman Recaptured

MEXICO CITY Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced Friday that fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was recaptured six months after he escaped from a maximum security prison.

A federal official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by name said Guzman was apprehended after a shootout with Mexican marines in the city of Los Mochis, in Guzman"s home state of Sinaloa. He said Guzman was taken alive and was not wounded.

Responding to what was seen as one of the biggest embarrassments of his administration Guzman"s July 11 escape through a tunnel from Mexico"s highest-security prison Pena Nieto wrote in his Twitter account on Friday: "mission accomplished: we have him."

"I would like to inform Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been detained."

The U.S. Justice Department had no immediate comment on whether it would push to extradite Guzman to the United States, where he faces charges in multiple different jurisdictions across the country.

Five people were killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the clash.

Another law enforcement official said authorities located Guzman several days ago, based on reports he was in Los Mochis.

The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said authorities had even searched storm drains in the area. In 2014, Guzman escaped arrest by fleeing through a network of interconnected tunnels in the city"s drainage system in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that marines acting on a tip raided a home in the town of Los Mochis before dawn. They were fired on from inside the structure. Five suspects were killed and six others arrested. The marine"s injuries were not life threatening.

At the home marines seized two armored vehicles, eight rifles, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Photos of the arms seized in the raid suggested that Guzman and his associates had a fearsome arsenal at the non-descript white house.

Two of the rifles seized were.50-caliber sniper guns, capable of penetrating most bullet-proof vests and cars. The grenade launcher was found loaded, with an extra round nearby. And an assault rifle had a .40 mm grenade launcher, and at least one grenade.

Some in Mexico had doubted Guzman would allow himself to be captured alive, and others doubted that Mexico given the successive embarrassments of his two escapes from prison would want to hold him again in a Mexican prison.

"Many people had doubted he could be recaptured," said Mexican security analyst Raul Benitez. "It is a big success for the government."

The United States filed requests for extradition for Guzman on June 25, before he escaped. In September, a judge issued a second provisional arrest warrant on U.S. charges of organized crime, money laundering drug trafficking, homicide and others.

Former Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam had bragged earlier that Mexico wouldn"t extradite Guzman until he had served his sentences in Mexico.

Benitez said such bragging "makes me ashamed."

"It would be better for the Americans to take him away," Benitez said.

OnlyOnAOL: Dakota Johnson is 50 shades of glam

Dakota Johnson Eavesdropped to Perfect a Boston Accent
Jan 8th 2016 10:05AM Comments

Her wardrobe malfunction notwithstanding, which she handled like a boss anyway, Dakota Johnson was dewy and gorgeous at the People"s Choice Awards.

It"s all due to her natural beauty, with a little help from her go-to glam squad: hairstylist Mark Townsend and makeup pro Pati Dubroff. Both of whom are truly lovely people in their own right.

"Dakota always loves a Jane Birkin eye, and it always works for her. When she came down after dressing I got obsessed with adding some blue liner. It"s like the dress was asking me to do it..just a touch and smudged well at the lower lashline," says Dubroff. "Sometimes you"ve got to listen to the dress."

In this case, an Armani two-piece number. Her face, meanwhile, says Dubroff, "was really fresh and natural-looking."

Dubroff used PR Air Perfection CC Cushion Foundation to give Johnson"s face an even finish, coupled with Nars Ferver Dual Intensity Blush on the apples of her cheeks. Her orbs popped courtesy of PR Eye Polish Pure Pigment Eye Primer + Top Coat in Satin on the center of her lid. And her pout: Kevyn Aucoin Lip Pencil in Minimal followed by the PR Lip Gloss Stick in Berry Pretty.

As for her loose "do, says Mark Townsend, she "knew exactly what she wanted to do with her hair: a sexy, tousled look with a lot of volume at the crown. Since her signature fringe has grown out a bit, I blew dry her bangs away from her face and set them with a duck-bill clip. I then went in and blew dry the rest of her hair with my Spornette boar bristle brush, getting it smooth and shiny. Once the hair was fully dried, I went in section by section and liberally sprayed her locks with Dove Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo before waving it with my double barrel iron."
