We remember innovative singer/songwriter David Bowie. Bowie fused new wave, electronica, experimental, soul and glam rock over five different decades. His latest release, Blackstar, was just last week. Bowie had two children: 44-year-old son Duncan from his first marriage, and his 15-year-old daughter Alexandria from his 23-year marriage to his widow, iconic supermodel Iman. Reports have already surfaced that Bowie left Iman his $195 million estate. Bowies career has ties here in Philly. Save for two cuts recorded in New York with ex-Beatle John Lennon, Bowie recorded his iconic Young Americans album at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios at the same time Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell were recording Billy Paul, The OJays, The Spinners, MFSB, The Three Degrees and Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. Bowie used a young songwriter and background vocalist on those sessions who would go on to become a legend in his own right Luther Vandross. Bowie became one of the first white performers on Soul Train and one of the first white performers to publicly challenge MTV on their refusals to play African-American artists. Bowies biggest hit was Lets Dance. It became his first platinum album on the strength of the songs China Girl, Modern Love and the title track, which hit No. 1. He co-produced the album with Chics Nile Rodgers. The iconic rocker was able to keep his illness a secret until very close to his death. David Bowie died of liver cancer at the age of 69.

Box office preview: Ride Along 2 to dethrone Star Wars: The Force Awakens

    RIDE ALONG 2 MOVIE REVIEW

Star Wars: The Force Awakens record-breaking run is coming to an end.

After The Force Awakens spent four weekends at No. 1, theres a new box office contender in town, andRide Along 2 is expected to top the charts this holiday weekend. Back in 2014, the first Ride Along set a record for the biggest Martin Luther King weekend opening ever, earning $48.6 million over four days. That record stood until last year, when American Sniper more than doubled it, earning $107.2 million when it expanded to wide release.

This time around, Ride Along 2 is opening in even more theaters (3,175 instead of Ride Alongs 2,663), and the sequel, starringIce Cube and Kevin Hart,is expected to debut somewhere in the forties if not higher. Add that to the fact that Michael Bays 13 Hours is also opening not to mention that The Revenant may actually bump Star Wars to third and it should make for a busy MLK Day at the box office.

Heres how this weekends box office race might play out. (All predictions are for the four-day weekend.)

    1. Ride Along 2 $40 million

Ride Along 2 picks up where the first one left off, with Ice Cube and Hart reprising their roles as a cop and his brother-in-law. Reviews have been pretty rough, with a current 15 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but thats about what the original earned, and that didnt detract from its box office performance. While Universal is being more conservative with a $30 million projection for Ride Along 2, other experts are predicting at least $40 million, if not $50.

    2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $30 million

After breaking just about every box office record you can think of, The Force Awakens is sitting pretty with $822.8 million the biggest domestic total of all time. But with Ride Along 2 on the horizon, it should give up its weekend box office crown for the first time. (Last Friday, The Revenant did manage to usurp Star Warsspotfor one day.) J.J. Abrams take on a galaxy far, far away is expected to earn about $30 million over the long weekend. Globally,The Force Awakenshas hit $1.78 billion, making it the third-biggest movie of all time.

    3. The Revenant $29 million

After a successful limited run, Alejandro Gonzlez Irritus survival drama expanded last weekend to earn a whopping $39.8 million, nearly dethroning Star Wars (which earned $42.4 million). This weekend, its expected to be just as close, and although The Force Awakens may hold on to its edge, theres a chance that The Revenant could surpass it to earn second place. After all, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring drama led this mornings Oscar nominations with 12. Oscar nods generally give more of a bump to smaller movies expect a small surge for titles like Spotlight and Brooklyn but all the Revenant buzz, coupled with DiCaprios recent Golden Globes win, might just help push The Revenant in front of Star Wars. So far, The Revenant has earned $54.1 million domestically.

    4. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi $20 million

Michael Bays latest tackles the true story of the 2012 terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya. Based on the book by Mitchell Zuckoff, 13 Hours stars John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, and Pablo Schreiber. With a 59 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews have been mixed, and its expected to debut around $20 million over four days.

    5. Daddys Home $10 million

After opening on Christmas Day, Daddys Home was one of the December releases not to get swamped by Star Wars, and so far, its made more than $119 million domestically. Its headed for a four-day MLK weekend around $10 million.

Outside of the top five, Lionsgates family-friendly Norm of the North is also opening. Rob Schneidervoices the titular polar bear in the animated comedy, and its headed for a debut somewhere around $5 million.

Happy to wait for the Core? Razer"s Blade Stealth is now available

The Razer Blade Stealth & Razer Core

Razer made quite a splash at this years CES when it unveiled its Blade Stealth Ultrabook gaming notebook, so its perhaps no surprise that it has not wasted time in making the device available for purchase. You can now buy the slimline, portable gaming machine for as little as $1,000, with orders expected to begin shipping by the end of the month.

Its certainly worth considering if youre in the market for a new, lightweight laptop with a lot of oomf. At just 2.75 pounds, this is far lighter than your average gaming Ultrabook and it packs a Core i7-CPU too, so it is very capable when it comes to general computing.

It also has 8GB of LPDDR3 memory and up to 512GB of M.2 SSD storage, though you can pick a 256 or 128GB model for a slightly reduced price tag. There are also options for the display, with choices includinga QHD 2,560 x 1,440 display, or a higher-end UHD 3,840 x 2,160 alternative.

Related:Razers new Blade Stealth has a powerful sidekick

The only potential issue here for a gaming laptop is that this system uses Intel 520 HD graphics. The gamers among us are likely turning their noses up and looking away, but hold fire. Razers idea with the Blade Stealth is that its powerful, but lightweight on the move, and when you fancy doing some gaming you sit down next to your Razer Core and off you go.

The Razer Core is a separate product, which admittedly isnt available yet, but it will be soon. What the Core does is let you plug in an external graphics card (inside the Core enclosure) into your Blade Stealth using the USBType-C port, which is capable of monstrous bandwidth. That lets you offload a 3D rendering to the external hardware, keeping the Ultrabook free from the power drain of whatever GPU you choose to put in there, as well as cutting back on weight and size.

The only downside of course is that if you do buy yourself a Blade Stealth it wont be that gaming-capable when released on January 29. It will be in the future, though, if you pick up a desktop GPU and a Core. Whether this is a success will really depend on the price of that external enclosure.

Nuggets hand Warriors their third loss of season

Charlotte Hornets vs Golden State Warriors - Full Game Highlights | Jan 4, 2016 | NBA 2015-16 Season

DENVER -- Stephen Curry let out long sighs after a game the Warriors felt they should have won even without Draymond Green.

Curry had scored 38 points, 20 of which came in a fourth-quarter comeback attempt that ultimately failed in a 112-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

The Nuggets prevailed despite Curry catching fire late and Klay Thompson getting a potential game-winning 3-point attempt that fell short before the final buzzer.

"We showed a lot of fight and aggressiveness down the stretch," Curry said. "We just spotted them too many points."

Green sat out the game in order to rest an ankle that has given him discomfort for more than two weeks, and his absence undoubtedly had something to do with the Warriors" woes on defense.

Out-rebounded and unable to get stops in crunchtime, the Warriors fell to 36-3 and suffered a rare setback that snapped their seven-game winning streak.

Danilo Gallinari led the Nuggets with 28 points, going 17 for 19 from the free throw line on a night when the Warriors totaled 20 free throws.

"I"m sure he would have loved to get some cracks at Gallinari," Curry said of Green.

Curry hit a 33-foot 3-pointer with under a minute left to pull the Warriors to within two points.

Later with a chance to tie the score or give the Warriors the lead, Curry mishandled the ball for his eighth turnover. Gallinari stole it, leading to two Gary Harris free throws to give Denver a 111-107 lead with 5.4 seconds left.

Still, the Warriors would not die then and there. Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left, and Gallinari missed one of two free throws on the other end to give the Warriors one final chance.

But with only 1.8 seconds to work with and the Warriors forced to go away from Curry as their first option, Thompson"s shot went off the front of the rim.

"A wake-up call a little bit," Thompson, who finished with 17 points, said of the loss.

    "It does not feel good."

Harrison Barnes added 18 points off the bench in his most productive performance since coming back from a sprained ankle.

But the Warriors would have liked a better start, as the Nuggets led for most of the game. Denver had 10-point leads in the first and headed into the fourth. Curry struggled with his shooting before heating up in the fourth. The Warriors started Jason Thompson in place of Green, whose fire and versatility on defense were missed dearly.

"We"ve got to play at that same intensity for 48 minutes like we did in the last four to five minutes. If we do that, we"re the hardest team to beat in this league," Klay Thompson said.

Said Warriors interim coach Luke Walton: "For a championship team and for what we are trying to accomplish, we didn"t play hard enough and we definitely didn"t play smart enough for the majority of the game."

The Warriors could be missing Green once again on Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers. He conceded that he needed the rest against the Nuggets.

"I wanted to fight it, but my body wouldn"t let me," Green said.

"I"m pretty beat up right now."

Green had been the only Warriors starter to play every game, and he leads the team averaging 34.9 minutes per game -- a number that increased while Barnes was out of action.

"With a big road trip coming up and a tough stretch here at the end of the month, we just figure it"s better to give him a little bit of rest and try to keep him healthy," Walton said.

"It"s something where he could play, but with the amount of minutes he"s been playing and -- I won"t call them injuries -- some nagging pain, it"s just better we feel like to give him the night off here."

The Warriors did get Leandro Barbosa back in action after he missed nine games with a sprained shoulder.

AP source: Giants hire Ben McAdoo to replace Coughlin

OC Ben McAdoo gives his take on the offense

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Ben McAdoo has been named the New York Giants coach.

The Giants confirmed the hiring on Thursday, a little more than a week after Tom Coughlin stepped down after 12 seasons.

The 38-year-old McAdoo has been the Giants offensive coordinator the past two seasons. He will formally be introduced at a news conference on Friday morning.

McAdoo interviewed with team president John Mara and general manager Jerry Reese a week ago Tuesday. They met again Wednesday, when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch and treasurer Jonathan Tisch.

Mara and Reese interviewed five other candidates before choosing McAdo, who is now the NFL"s second youngest coach.

"We were all impressed with his energy, his enthusiasm, his vision and his desire," Mara said. "Ben has been preparing for this opportunity since he started coaching, and he has earned his stripes every step of the way. Some have suggested he may not be ready, and as I said last week, we want a coach who feels like he has something to prove."

The Giants have something to prove. They have missed the playoffs the past four seasons, and posted losing records the past three seasons, going 6-10 the past two years.

McAdoo"s offense has been one of the few bright spots for the team.

Under his leadership, Eli Manning threw 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions the past two seasons. He had 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in 2013.

"I have been preparing for this moment my entire professional life, and without the guidance and support of many people, I would not be here right now," McAdoo said.

The Giants" 420 points was the fifth-highest total in franchise history, and their 5,952 net yards was the third-highest total. They set franchise records for pass attempts (623), completions (392), and their 36 touchdown passes were the second-highest total in Giants" history.

"I"m excited for the Giants organization and for the team. I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader of this team," said Manning, who voiced his support for McAdoo after the season. "I"m excited to continue to work with him and grow within this offense, and get this organization back where it needs to be."

McAdoo joined the NFL in 2004 as an offensive quality control assistant with the New Orleans Saints, spent a year with the 49ers the following year and then joined the Green Bay Packers for the next eight seasons, working with the tight ends and the final two years as Aaron Rodgers" quarterback coach.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy remembers meeting McAdoo at an NFL combine in Indianapolis when McAdoo was a lower-level coach.

"I was the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and he had called me on the phone, was seeking an opportunity just to talk football," McCarthy said. "We talked on the phone that evening and then the next day at lunch, when I was coming back from the workouts at the combine, Ben was sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for me. He drove all night just for an opportunity to sit down and talk football."

The Giants hired McAdoo in 2014 to replace Kevin Gilbride. His version of the West Coast offense and the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. has helped revive the offense.

Now he is being asked to revive a team that won two Super Bowls under Coughlin before falling on hard times.

McAdoo also impressed the Philadelphia Eagles when he interviewed for their coaching vacancy.

It is not clear whether defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who also interviewed for the head coaching job, will return.

McAdoo learned under Coughlin and has shown some of his mentor"s attitudes. He"s not afraid to gamble.

In the season opener against Dallas this past season, he went for the win, calling a pass play on third down in the red zone in the closing minutes.

A touchdown would have iced the game. Instead, Manning made a mistake throwing the ball away and that stopped the clock. New York kicked a field goal to take a six-point lead but the extra time allowed Dallas to come back and win the game.

That aggressive play calling, though, is part of McAdoo"s game. He isn"t afraid to put the game in the offense"s hands.

"Excited for Coach McAdoo," cornerback Prince Amukama said in a text to The Associated Press. "I figured him or Spagz would have been a great pick. I"m sure his players and the fans are all excited."
