NYC weather: Coldest temperatures of season possible for Valentine"s Day weekend, meteorologist says

NYC Weather

New Yorkers are in for a weather double whammy this week first more snow, then below-zero wind chill.

Between 3 and 5 inches of snow is expected to fall on New York City this evening, with a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. to noon Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Around New York City, snowfall is expected around 9 p.m. and overnight, with flurries lasting through the morning and even into Thursday, said FayeBarthold, a meteorologist in the service"s Long Island office.

Temperatures should reach the 40s on Wednesday, but it just keeps getting colder from there. Highs are expected to drop by about 10 degrees each day until Sunday, when they might reach only the high teens, Barthold said.

Saturday night lows could be in single digits, which would make itthe coldest night New Yorkers have seen this season, she said.

And for an added freeze on the night before Valentine"s Day,wind chills are predicted to drop as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero Saturday night into Sunday morning.

"Saturday night would be a good night to stay in," Barthold said.

Lets just call that Mother Natures revenge on behalf single New Yorkers.

Weather NYC: First snow of 2016 possible Tuesday

New York Snow 2016 - Weather
Complete weather

New York City may see its first snow day of 2016 on Tuesday, only a few days after an unusually warm weekend.

The NYC Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert for Tuesday and anticipates that the snowfall will commence after 4:00 p.m. Rain is expected before the snowfall.

Meteorologists predict less than half an inch of snow, but warn that some icy spots may develop on roads.

This could be coming down during part of the rush hour so visibility could be reduced under the heavier snow that might fall, so leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go, advised Joe Pollina, a New York meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Ash Wednesday: Help feed poor

16 | Ash Wednesday -- Chuck Knows Church

MANILA, Philippines The Lenten season starts with Ash Wednesday today, with the Catholic Church asking the faithful to fast and help in feeding the poor.

Archbishop of Manila Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle has asked for support in the Churchs Fast2Feed programs target of feeding 25,000 malnourished children.

The Fast2Feed asked Catholics to fast and donate money to the Hapag-Asa program of Pondo ng Pinoy of the Archdiocese of Manila and its suffragan dioceses, CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines reported.

In a pastoral letter for Ash Wednesday, Tagle asked the faithful to feed hungry children as their concrete act of charity in this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

It only takes P1,200 or P10 a day to bring back a hungry and malnourished child to a healthy state in six months, he said.

Let us make a difference in their lives by fasting and donating whatever we save to Hapag-Asa. Let us Fast2Feed.

The program provides supplemental feeding and early childhood education and livelihood and skills training for parents.

Last year, donationsprovided more than 21,000 malnourished and undernourished children in the Pondo ng Pinoy member dioceses with warm and nutritious meals every day for six months.

Donations can be made through Fast2Feed envelopes distributed in various parishes and they may be offered during the mass or be turned over to the parish office.

Ash Wednesday signals the start of Lent, the season for Catholics to do good works, fast and pray.

And with the Year of Mercy being observed by the Church, Tagle said Lent should be a particular occasion to heed Pope Francis call to practice mercy through concrete acts of charity.
