LAS VEGAS When Miesha Tate first revealed she wanted to be a mixed martial arts fighter about a decade before her championship fight Saturday against Holly Holm Bryan Caraway, then a budding MMA fighter and trainer, was strongly opposed.

He was interested in her as a potential girlfriend, and the thought of Tate fighting soured their budding romance.

I was like, Whoa, this is my deal, Caraway told USA TODAY Sports. You dont want to get your face punched. Youre a cute little girl.

Hows this for cute: Tate and Caraway eventually hooked up, in and out of the gym, and forged a relationship that has help develop Tate as perennial top contender and given her a third shot at a UFC championship. But for boyfriend/trainer and girlfriend/fighter, it has not been easy.

In fact, in 2013 Tate brought in a second trainer, Robert Follis.

He serves as a great buffer between Bryan and I when emotions get tense, Tate told USA TODAY Sports.

Strong emotions always have been at the root of the relationship between Tate and Caraway. They struck up a romance in 2005 at Central Washington University soon after Tate joined the MMA club Caraway helped start. But Caraway, who was helping train Tate, decided the relationship must be strictly business after Tate declared her intentions to fight competitively.

Initially, Caraway said, he was hoping she would quit.

We were a little bit more rough on her, he said. But I remember one day looking over and she was working just as hard if not harder than everyone on the team. Thats when I realized she was legit.

Tate started dating another MMA fighter, and a few months later, her new boyfriend committed suicide.

Tate, devastated, stopped training.

I really crawled into a shell, she said, adding that she did not resume training until she got a call from Caraway. It was really Bryan who pushed me to get back into mixed martial arts.

When she returned, their relationship changed. Caraway soon became Tates boyfriend and trainer, and so began their ascent in MMA. She made professional debut in 2007 and compiled a 12-2 record before getting a shot against Ronda Rousey in 2012.

After a first-round loss, Tate got a rematch in 2013. She became the first fighter to survive more than one round with Rousey in a competitive, three-round loss. Tate has since won four consecutive fights.

But perhaps her biggest victory was convincing Caraway that a cute little girl could handle herself in the octagon.

Obviously she won that battle, said Caraway, who also competes as a fighter and is 20-7 in MMA. It taught me a lot, not to put limitations on somebody just because youre uncomfortable with it.

China orders "blacklist" of 31 North Korean vessels: document

10 Days in North Korea

SHANGHAI/BEIJING Chinese maritime authorities must "blacklist" 31 boats operated by a North Korean firm that came under U.N. Security Council sanctions this week, according to a Ministry of Transport document reviewed by a signal that China is enforcing tough new curbs aimed at Pyongyang"s banned nuclear program.

The notice, dated March 3, says maritime safety agencies must "urgently" determine whether 31 vessels belonging to Ocean Maritime Management Co (OMM) are in Chinese harbors or waters, and notify the ministry.

The latest U.N. sanctions, drafted by the United States and China, blacklist the vessels. The ministry"s notice says authorities must not allow the vessels to enter Chinese harbors, adding the measures were part of the "exceedingly sensitive" work of enforcing the U.N. sanctions.

The ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours. OMM could not be reached for comment.

The U.N. sanctions, passed unanimously on Wednesday, punish North Korea following its fourth nuclear test, in January, as well as last month"s satellite launch, which the United States and others say was really a test of ballistic missile technology.

Independent experts have frequently questioned China"s resolve to enforce sanctions against North Korea, whose economy is heavily dependent on China. China has said it will enforce the measures "conscientiously".

The Philippines Coast Guard has banned one of the 31 OMM vessels, the 6,830 deadweight tonne (dwt) Jin Teng general cargo ship, from leaving port until safety deficiencies are put right, officials said on Friday.

Authorities this week also restricted how many vehicles could cross into North Korea each day via a bridge to the coastal Chinese city of Dandong, from 300-400 earlier to about 100, shopkeepers there said - a sign that sanctions are having some early impact.

The U.N. latest sanctions also ban North Korean exports of coal and iron ore other than for "livelihood purposes" and if proceeds do not go to fund the North"s weapons programs - wording that leaves room for interpretation and continued trade.

North Korea was one of China"s top sources for imported coal last year.

ABC"s "The Family" Faces Headwinds From Fox News Debate

The Family 1x02 Promo "All You See is Dark" (HD)

ABCs launch of The Family met with ratings resistance Thursday night despite being put in one of the networks top slots the hour normally reserved for its big hit Scandal.

The Family, which stars Joan Allen as the matriarch of a clan that welcomes the return of a song long thought vanished, saw its rating in the advertiser-desired 18-to-49 demo come in below what Scandal normally achieves in the hour. And it did so despite not having to face NBCs popular The Blacklist in the timeslot. The Peacock opted to show a repeat of Blindspot instead.

The Family drew a 1.5 in the demo, and 5.74 million viewers overall, according to Nielsen, compared with a 1.7 demo and 8 million viewers for CBS Mom The ABC program did beat CWs The 100 and the NBC repeat. CBS broadcast of Two Broke Girls at 9:30 drew a 1.7 rating in the demo and 6.71 million viewers overall, according to Nielsen.

The Family may have been disrupted by Fox News Channels broadcast of a Republican Presidential debate, which also started at 9 p.m. eastern time. That broadcast drew 16.9 million viewers, an outsize number for any TV show, and could have siphoned off audience that might normally have sampled the new program.
