#InternationalWomensDay: Triumph in Tel Aviv, a global top startup city for female entrepreneurs

International Women’s Day 2016: What are you going to make?

Today, 8th March, is International Womens Day, which is earmarked to celebratethe social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women from around the globe.

In line with celebrations, htxt.women took some time out to speak to two women who are members of a womens startup hub located in Tel Aviv, a city in Israel thats been rankedthe best startup ecosystem in the world outside the US.

We set about finding out what the benefits of working in such an environment are for female entrepreneurs, and what the rest of the world can learn from it.

What makes Tel Aviv triumph over other cities outside the US?

Tel Aviv has an amazing startup culture because of a few things in the citys DNA I think openness, a home for the creative class, talent, toleranceand most important everyone is willing to help each other, Oren explains to htxt.women.

There are plenty of mentors who want to pay it forward and share theirinsights; people love making connections between their contacts who can collaborate. It is really an amazing environment. There is an amazing culture of helping each other instead of competing, she says.

Oren adds that such a support system is also critical to helping female founders make the right connections and advance to the next level.

Challenges in Tel Aviv are just like any other around the world

Although Tel Aviv offers a great platform for startups to not only survive, but thrive, Oren says startups, particularity those owned by women are still up against many challenges others from around the world face.

Female entrepreneurs experience many of the challenges facing both genders in the industry such as struggling to obtain funding, build a strong team, make the right contacts, and stay inspired, she says.

The shortage of women in the startup ecosystemhas roots ineducationand societal expectations, and WMN helps women-led ventures advance and bridge that gap.

The WMN hub

WMN launched in May 2015 in the coastal city of Tel Aviv with a mission tosignificantly increase the number of female foundersinthe startup industry, and to bridge the gender gap in the startup ecosystem.

WMN was founded by entrepreneur Merav Oren under Agora, one of the largest tech companies in Israel, and is managed by Liron Ben Eliahu.

The hub is supported byDeloitte and the Tel-Aviv municipality

Our mission is to be a game changer, significantly increasing the number of female foundersinthe industry and bridging the gender gap in the startup ecosystem, Oren says. We do this by providing our community members with a coworking space, professional events and workshops as well as mentors and networking opportunities.

Its also amazing to see how while they are in very different markets, the startups have many shared experiences as women-led ventures.

WMN is home tomore than 20 female founders together with their startup teams, each operating in a different industry such as social networking, online dating, fintech, eCommerce, fashion and more.

A look at a couple of startups hosted at WMN

Open Restaurants

Oren also runs her own startup, called Open Restaurants which is hosted at WMN.

Founded in 2013, Open Restaurants is an online marketplace for the best culinary experiences a region has to offer.

Its an innovative easy-to-use platform, where users can discover, explore and book a vast array of unique, handpicked culinary adventures in cities aroundthe world from culinary workshops, tasting sessions and special culinary events to cooking or baking lessons, chefs andexpert-guided market tours and otheractivities.

Whenever I went to a restaurant and the waiter delivered my plate complete with color, careful design, and delicious tastes, I was curious. I am always a curious person and couldnt help but wonder what the process of creating that plate really looks like, Oren tells us about why she started Open Restaurants.

I wanted to expose people to the wonders of the culinary world and allow them a deeper, behind-the-scenes opportunity.

The startups clients consist of 80% locals and 20% tourists. The tourists are foodies who are drawn by food and lifestyle festivals, while locals include anyone who is curious to learn and experience something different.

Merav Oren

The business has really grown and this year it is going to be a huge festival in Tel Aviv. In addition to meeting restaurant chefs, which was the original concept, participants will have the chance to tour bakeries, wineries, and breweries and interact with the people who run them. They can also participate in workshops at these locations and hear food talks about culinary perspectives from many angles including journalists, designers, and entrepreneurs in this field, Oren says.

Oren also has major plans to expand Open Restaurants further this year.

I am excited to launch the venture in Amsterdam this coming November. Hopefully London will be the next stop, and then many other places throughout the globe. I am excited to open peoples eyes to culinary experiences they never had before and to build a greater appreciation for whats in front of them, she says.

TOPRO

TOPRO is an online platform built to display, connect, and support talented independent professionals worldwide. The startup maps all independent service providers, giving them more visibility and changing the way clients recommend, discover, and book the best professionals around.

The first version of the product is a collaborative tool to help closed groups/events build their list of best professionals. This tool keeps the knowledge in one place, in a trustworthy manner, 30-year-old founder Dannie Hetz tells htxt.women.

TOPRO is the second startup Hetz has founded, the first being a scheduling app named SPOT which helped clients book easily appointments with the potential employees they are interested in hiring.

After working in the independent professionals industry for tw years, I noticed an injustice taking place independent professionals are brave for building their livelihood aroun their own unique talent and passion, yet they are invisible to clients. Clients are looking for the best professionals around them via social media by asking friends Whos the best photographer/mover/nanny you know? and the answers they get disappear in the feed, so the professionals arent seen by many, Hetz explained about the inspiration behind starting TOPRO.

I think that brave people should be celebrated and highlighted, and thats my motivation.

Hetz admits that, like any other startup getting off the ground, she did have her reservations about launching TOPRO.

There are always fears when working on something new and trying to build something in the hopes of making a change. One of the biggest lessons I learned, as a startup founder, is to manage those fears and believe 100% in what we do, she says.

Working from a startup hub has also contributed to making the journey a little smoother, Hetz adds.

WMN gave our team the ability to work together in a beautiful collaborative space. We also got to know other startups who come there and encounter similar challenges. We learn a lot from interacting with the wonderful startups around us at WMN.

On working in the worlds second top destination for women entrepreneurs, Hetz says the startup scene in Tel Aviv is growing, but would love tosee a more balanced ecosystem with more women investors, CTOs, and founders of great companies.

For the future of TOPRO,Id love to see the beginning of a new movement: happy clients who take the time to appreciate and highlight those individuals who make our lives better. Independent professionals have earned the right to be visible, Id like to see them grow, she says.

Her words of wisdom from one women startup founder to another are to listen to corrective advice and to the consumer is a big lesson, but listening shouldnt make you not do something- it should simply make you make corrections in your assumptions or re-evaluate thoseassumptions.

The race is long it ends only when you choose to stop, she says.

What is the history behind Mothers Day?

The origins of Mothers Day date back to the ancient Greek times, but the way in which we celebrate it today began in America in the early 20th Century.

The ancient Greeks dedicated an annual spring festival to maternal goddesses, and ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele.

More recent origins of Mothering Sunday date back to the 1600s in England when it was held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Some stories say that people would return to their mother church, the church that they were baptized in or attended services in when they were children, and this would bring together communities who hadnt seen each other for a while.

By 1911, Mothers Day was celebrated in almost every US state and on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution document that confirmed every second Sunday in May as Mothers Day.

What is Meldonium? The drug behind Maria Sharapova"s positive test

Ivars Kalvins - Herzmedikament Meldonium und andere

Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced that she was recently informed of a positive test at the Australian Open for Meldonium, which is considered a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The supplement was added to the WADA list on Jan. 1, 2016 after one year of being watched closely on the anti-doping governing body"s monitoring program. The drug is also banned by the International Tennis Federation"s Anti-Doping Program as a result.

Background

Meldonium is an anti-ischemic drug used clinically to treat myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure. Meldonium was first developed and marketed by the Latvia-based pharmaceutical company Grindeks and was one of the country"s largest exports. It garnered65 million in sales for 2013.

The drug can be taken by capsules or injections.

It is not approved by the United States" Food and Drug Administration. WADA classifies the drug as aS4 substancewhich focuses on hormone and metabolic modulators.

Benefits

Among the positive benefits of Meldoniumin endurance sports are decreased levels of lactate and urea in blood, glycogen increase during extended exercise, increased rate of recovery and increased heart function. The drug was recommended to treat patients with ischemic disorders of the cerebral circulation.

WhileIvars Kalvins, the inventor of Mildronate (another name for the drug), may not call it a performance enhancing drug, clinical trials on humans have proven to show effects. Much like EPO, which was invented with illnesses in mind, athletes soon discovered the benefits for sport.

Some athletes from the USSR have been rumored to use it for years for heart support. Sharapova said she had been prescribed the supplement for about 10 years to treat medical issues, including abnormal EKG readings, a magnesium deficiency and more.

Sharapova"s attorney John Haggerty details failed drug test

A suspension for the five-time Grand Slam champion has not been determined but Sharapova will be provisionally suspended beginning on March 12, according to the ITF.

Meldonium in other sports

A recent studyfound that more than 180 cases ofMildronateuse were spread across numerous different sport disciplines.

Swedish distance runner Abeba Aregawi, the 2013 world champion at 1,500-meters, also tested positive for Meldonium last week. She has accepted a provisional suspension and requested the testing of a B-sample.

Other athletes who have reportedly tested positive for Meldonium include six wrestlers from Georgia,Russian cyclist Eduard Vorganov andUkrainian biathlete Olga Abramova.

Just before Sharapova"s announcement,Russian ice dancer Ekaterina Bobrova revealedthat she had also tested positive for Meldonium at the 2016 European Figure Skating Championships

Here"s What to Know About Meldonium

Maria Sharapova fails Test Admission meldonium, #Breaking #Tennis

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova on Monday announced that she has failed a drug test at the Australian Open because she tested positive for meldonium, a little-known drug that was banned on Jan. 1.

The drug is used in Latvia and other eastern European countries to treat serious heart problems and aid the circulation of oxygen, the BBC reported last month, when Russian professional bicyclist Eduard Vorganov tested positive for the same drug.

Meldonium, also known as mildronate, was developed at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis to help prevent ischemia, which is a vascular disease that can lead to tissue death, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is also used to treat brain circulation disorders.

The drug improves the users mood and allows them to become more active, the National Library of Medicine said. They become more active, their motor dysfunction decreases, and asthenia, dizziness and nausea become less pronounced, it said. Sharapova said she has been taking meldonium for 10 years for health issues.

Wow: Katt Williams Gets a Serious Beat Down on Camera

Katt Williams Goes to Philly and Gets Stomped out After Squaring Up and Hooking off on Random man.

Another day, another Katt Williams brawl. No, really This time, the comedian got into it at a rap show in Philadelphia, punching a man in the face, but he didn"t get the outcome he had hoped for.

According to TMZ, the drama ensued last night at the Trocadero Theatre during a performance by Beanie Sigel, Jahlil Beats, Jadakiss and a few other MCs. In true Katt Williams fashion, the comic was doing the most, frantically freestyling on-stage, doing push-ups and putting up his fists while leaning into a fight stance for no reason what so ever.

Out of nowhere, he then ran towards one of the men on stage and threw him a punch, and it all went downhill for him from there. Unfortunately for him, the man was not alone, as his entourage joined him in beating Katt to the ground. No one was reportedly arrested in connection to the incident.

This is not the first odd offense by the comedian. Just last week, he was arrested in Georgia for allegedly punching a store clerk and just a day prior to that, he was accused of holding five female tourists at gun point. A few days after that, he also got into another brawl in the streets of L.A.

Take a look at what went down in Philly in the video, below:

Mother"s Day 2016 In The UK And Ireland: Traditions And Customs And What You Need To Know

DIY Mother"s Day Gift Ideas | Mother"s Day 2016!

Although Mothers Day in the United States doesnt take place until May 8, Mothers Day, or Mothering Day as it is affectionately known as by both the British and Irish, occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It is also exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, which occurs during the second half of March or early April. Easter 2016 takes place on March 27 this year.

The Telegraph UK reported that Mothering Day, as it is called in the United Kingdom, is a day set aside to celebrate both mothers and the maternal bond. It is a day where children give flowers, cards, and presents to their mothers. They also give them to other maternal figures like grandmothers, step mothers, and mothers-in-law.

Its a brave thing, loving another person: readers share stories of motherhood https://t.co/ayKCbGQd99 #MothersDay pic.twitter.com/8AHSUanNec

The Guardian (@guardian) March 6, 2016

It is a centuries old tradition that originally began with parishioners returning home to their mother church on Laetare Sunday, which occurs in the middle of Lent. It later became a day for servants to return home to see their mothers and spend time with them, a chance for a family reunion, but that wasnt how the official Mothers Day began.

Although many would pick flowers along the way to give to their mothers or to the church, it wasnt until American social activist Anna Jarvis, born in 1864, decided that there needed to be an official Mothers Day to honor mothers. Jarvis lobbied to create the day after her mother died. She said that she was concerned about the commercialism of the day.

I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit.

She also didnt like the selling of flowers and the use of greetings cards, which she described as a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write.

BBC Womans Hour (@BBCWomansHour) March 6, 2016

Mothers Day became official in 1914 when Christians began to celebrate it, and in 1932, it became a holiday in Japan. Jarvis dedicated her life to making Mothers Day a holiday because of her relationship with her mother.

The Scarborough News reported that there were many traditions associated with Mothers Day, beginning with the fact that it is celebrated at the same time that winter is ending, and the peak growing months in the United Kingdom occur in the spring. Great Britain began its Mothers Day celebrations two years after the Americans. Because of World War I, there was a strong sentiment pushing for Mothers Day in the United Kingdom, and a day in August was chosen. By the 1920s, the celebration had faded away. It died out in the 1930s and didnt make a resurgence until after the end of World War II.

Meals have commonly been associated with Mothers Day, and for the British, it meant a meal with the family. Each region has it specialties when it comes to making the meal. For those who live in the Northern region, it was common to have a fig pie made with currants, syrup, and spices, washed down with spiced ale. Other treats included egg custard and white sugar candies flavored with caraway. Since Mothering Day is now related to the Easter Holiday season, simnel cake is often served.

The Mothers Day celebration never caught on in the northeast or Yorkshire. Instead, they prefer to celebrate Carling Sunday, also called Passion Sunday, and its related to an earlier form of the Roman Rite or liturgies. They eat carlin peas on this day.
