The Lakers can finally move on from Kobe Bryant

March 10, 2016 - Cavaliers vs. Lakers - Kobe Bryant Up And Under On LeBron James

As each NBA team is eliminated from contention for the 2015-16 title, The Washington Post will look ahead to what they have in store for this offseason. The series continues with the Los Angeles Lakers, who became the second team eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday night when the Houston Rockets beat the Philadelphia 76ers.

For the vast majority of their existence, its been pretty good to be the Los Angeles Lakers. Not only are they second only to their blood rivals, the Boston Celtics, in terms of championships (16), but through the 2013 season the Lakers had made the playoffs a staggering 60 times in their first 65 years in the league.

Recently, though, things havent been quite as good in Lakerland. This is the third straight year the Lakers will miss the playoffs the first time thats ever happened and the franchise has suffered embarrassing losses in free agency each of the last three summers, as the Lakers failed to land their top targets in any of them. To imagine the Lakers being unable to lure stars to play for them was once unthinkable; now, however, its becoming the expectation.

Thats why this summer is so crucial for the franchise. The Lakers currently have the second-worst record in the NBA, putting them in position to potentially keep their first-round pick (if the pick goes outside of the top three, it will head to Philadelphia). Whether the Lakers keep the pick or not, theyll also have to decide what to do with head coach Byron Scott, who has made some curious decisions with the teams young talent, including DAngelo Russell, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

That also doesnt take into account the deadline put in place by owner Jeanie Buss for her brother, Jim, as well as general manager Mitch Kupchak, to have the team near the top of the Western Conference again by next season or else both of them will be looking for new employment.

All of this was simply looming inthe background for the past several months as Kobe Bryants farewell tour gave the fans a final glimpse before he rides off into the sunset next month. With Bryant exiting the stage, though, the Lakers inadequacies will be on full display moving forward that is, assuming they cant finally begin to fix them.

2016 draft picks

First round: Their own (if it falls inside the top three picks; if it doesnt, it goes to Philadelphia, via Phoenix, as part of the trade that brought Steve Nash to Los Angeles in 2012)

Second round: Their own

2016-17 salary cap space (with projected $90 million cap)

$59.8 million ($23.1 million committed to six players; $4.9 million to two draft picks; $2.2 million to four roster charges)

2016 free agents

PG Marcelo Huertas (restricted), SG Jordan Clarkson (restricted), PF Ryan Kelly (restricted), PF Tarik Black (restricted), PF Metta World Peace, C Roy Hibbert, C Robert Sacre

Five questions to answer

1. Will Byron Scott remain as the coach?

Its been a strange two years with Scott, a Lakers legend, at the helm. Seemingly brought in to help Bryant have a familiarface around as he plays through his final two years in the league, Scott has often seemed to beworking against the well-being of his teams young players Russell in particular.

Theres little reason, from a performance standpoint, he should remain in the job. This being the Lakers however, you cant dismiss the possibility they keep him around. The most likely outcome though is Scott gets moved aside in favor of a fresh face to help usher in the post-Bryant era.

So who will it be? Golden State Warriors assistant Luke Walton, who grew up in San Diego and spent most of his career playing under Phil Jackson for the Lakers, figures to be the first choice both here and in New York. If Walton opts to take the Knicks job, or just decides its more fun to be working with the Warriors, former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau would be an obvious choice.

2. Can they keep their draft pick?

When the Lakers acquired Steve Nash back in 2012, they thought the combination of Nash, Bryant, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard would be leading them back to the NBA Finals. Things didnt quite work out that way, as Nash immediately got injured, Howard played through a bad back, Bryant eventually tore his Achilles tendon and the Lakers eventually snuck into the playoffs as the No. 8seed that was promptly swept out of the playoffs.

The longer-term penalty for that trade, though, could come due in May, when the Lakers will head to New York for the draft lottery to see if their horrid season will net them one of the top three picks in this years draft. If it does, Los Angeles will keep its pick, and get another critical building block to add to its young core of Russell, Clarkson and Julius Randle.

If it falls outside the top three, the Lakers will be left with further insult on top of whats already been a painful season for them.

3. What is DAngelo Russells future?

Los Angeles opted to go with Russell last June, with the Lakers saying they felt he had the most star-power of any player in the draft. They passed on big men Jahlil Okafor and Kristaps Porzingis in the process.

Then they proceeded to allow their coach to repeatedly destroy Russells confidence with his public statements in the media, and to yankhim in and out of the lineup and rotation repeatedly throughout the first few months of the season.

Not only was this confusing, it was borderline insane behavior from Scott. Figuring out what Russell is capable of should have been the most important thing the Lakers did this season. Instead, they were more focused on making sure Bryant was feted properly at every turn.

Theres no question Bryant deserves every bit of the accolades hes received, but Russell represents the best chance the Lakers have currently to replace him. Hes had his moments of late scoring a career-high 39 points against the Nets March 1, and scoring at least 20 points in six of his last seven games which only makes the earlier treatment of him this season all the more confusing.

4. Will the Lakers finally catch a star in free agency?

The Lakers have long been one of the NBAs glamour franchises, the kind of team that any star player in the league would want to play for thanks to its combination of location and success. But the past three summers have seen that image take a big hit, thanks to the Lakers striking out each year in free agency.

First it was Dwight Howard deciding to leave Los Angeles for Houston. Then it was LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony both saying, Thanks, but no thanks in 2014. Finally, and most embarrassingly, it was LaMarcus Aldridge giving the Lakers a second meeting last summer out of pity after theyd botched the first one so badly.

While Kevin Durant is the obvious free agent prize this summer, there are still other players of consequence available, including Al Horford, Nicolas Batum and DeMar DeRozan, among others. The Lakers will be trying to get difference makers once again on the open market.Well see if this time will be any different.

5. What will be the Lakers post-Kobe identity?

For most of the past 20 years, the Lakers could easily be identified by one man: Kobe Bryant. Thats certainly been the case through the last couple of seasons, as his presence has helped mask just how awful this team has been because fans havent stopped coming out in droves to see him.

Take Thursday night, for example: the Lakers were in a nationally televised game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the entire focus of the game was on Bryant and James facing off one last time not that the Lakers are in the midst of their third straight embarrassing season.

With Bryant finally set to ride off into the sunset next month though, that distraction is going to be removed, and the Lakers will be forced to confront the reality of the situation they find themselves in. And if they cant begin to pull themselves up out of the NBAs basement soon, the franchises reputation will begin to take an even bigger hit than it already has during its struggles over the past three years.

Box Office: "10 Cloverfield Lane" Scares Away Competition on Thursday Night

Mary Did You Know? | Acapella | The Young Messiah

Paramounts apocalyptic thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane scared away the competition, opening to a solid $1.8 million at about 2,500 locations on Thursday night.

Sonys spy spoof The Brothers Grimsby launched with a quiet $235,000 at Thursday showings. Focus Features faith-based The Young Messiah took in a moderate $475,000 at 1,300 locations in previews. Meanwhile, The Perfect Match scored $155,000 at 790 sites last night.

Disneys second weekend of the animated comedy Zootopia will easily win the frame with at least $40 million following its impressive $75 million debut last weekend.

The launch for 10 Cloverfield Lane is in the same neighborhood as 2011s Super 8, which took in $1.5 million in previews and opened to a $35.5 million weekend, and 2014s Edge of Tomorrow with $1.8 million in previews and a $28.8 million launch.

10 Cloverfield Lane, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., is pegged for about $20 million at 3,391 locations. Developed by J.J. Abrams Bad Robot Prods. as a spiritual successor to 2008s found-footage horror film Cloverfield, the thriller, which has a modest $15 million budget, is set in a bleak near-future Louisiana.

Critics have offered strong support to 10 Cloverfield Lane with a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Brothers Grimsby, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong, has been forecast to open with about $8 million at 2,235 locations. Thats well below the openings for Baron Cohens Bruno ($30 million), Borat ($26.4 million) and The Dictator ($17.4 million).

Baron Cohen and Strong play long-lost brothers who are reunited while Strongs character is on a spy mission. The film is replete with edgy humor, including a scene in which presidential candidate Donald Trump contracts AIDS.

The Young Messiah, starring Adam Greaves-Neal as Jesus, has been marketed to the Christian community and is pegged to generate about $7 million from 1,761 domestic locations.

The Lionsgate and Codeblack Films romantic comedy The Perfect Match is expected to reel in $5 million at 925 sites. Terrence J, Cassie Ventura, Donald Faison and Paula Patton star in the film.

Dig Deeper Into The New "Captain America: Civil War" Trailer With 10 Things You May Have Missed

Captain America Civil War Trailer 2 Breakdown! (Nerdist News w/ Kyle Hill)

Subscribe to UPROXX

The final trailer finally dropped for Captain America: Civil War on Thursday, and Dan already took us through a great GIF breakdown of things we learned from the new footage. Now we continue to speculate on what might happen in the movie because, no, we cant just wait to see it in theaters. Thats madness.

Mr. Sunday Movies whom you may remember from his previous deep dives into the trailers for Suicide Squad, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Batman V Superman put together the video above going through ten easter eggs to be spotted in the new trailer. Among them is the very Steve Ditko inspired Spider-Man suit with large back logo and constricting eyes, but the suit also seems to have been influenced by Iron Man, who may have helped Spidey build these extra web cartridges into his belt, something I missed on the first viewing:

Fact Checks of the 12th GO.P. Debate

Full CNN Republican Debate | GOP Presidential Debate March 10 2016 Miami Florida

Mr. Rubio accused Chris Christie of having a record similar to President Obama"s on issues like education, gun control and abortion.

Mr. Rubio, a senator from Florida, and Mr. Christie, the New Jersey governor, are attacking each other with a notable intensity, and in an interview Thursday on Fox Business Network, Mr. Rubio asserted that Mr. Christie has done a number of things that are very similar to the Obama agenda, giving several examples. We looked into his claims.

The fact of the matter is Chris Christie has supported Common Core and in fact has bad-mouthed Republicans that oppose it.

Mr. Christie was previously a supporter of the Common Core education standards. This is one of those areas where Ive agreed more with the president than not, he said in 2013.

But Mr. Christie had plenty of company: More than 40 states adopted the Common Core standards.

Mr. Christies bad-mouthing was also mild, particularly by his standards. He attributed some of the Common Core opposition among congressional Republicans to that knee-jerk reaction thats happening in Washington right now that if the president likes something, the Republicans in Congress dont, and vice versa.

Mr. Christie has since changed his position on Common Core, which has become an object of scorn among conservatives who view it as an example of government overreach. In May, Mr. Christie said that Common Core was simply not working.

Chris Christie has supported gun control. Chris Christie supported an assault weapons ban. Its the reason why he got into politics to begin with.

In 1993, Mr. Christie, then a 30-year-old lawyer, announced that he would try to unseat a Republican state senator.

"The issue which has energized me to get into this race is the recent attempt by certain Republican legislators to repeal New Jersey"s ban on assault weapons," Mr. Christie said in a statement, according to an article at the time in The Star-Ledger of Newark. "In today"s society, no one needs a semiautomatic assault weapon."

He took a similar stance two years later when he was running for the states General Assembly. Even as recently as 2009, when he was running for governor, Mr. Christie supported strict gun laws. FACT: Chris Christie supports the assault weapons ban and all current gun laws, his campaign said in a news release.

Mr. Christie has since moved away from his support of strict gun control laws and opposes banning assault weapons. His campaign website says that as governor, he has fought to defend gun rights, and highlights several instances in which he vetoed gun-related legislation.

In an interview on Wednesday on Fox News, he said that he had changed his mind since 1995, citing his time as the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey.

I learned what the limitations are of these laws that people are talking about, Mr. Christie said, and how they much, much more greatly infringe on law-abiding citizens than they do anything to prevent crime.

Chris Christie personally contributed to Planned Parenthood.

This is another claim that dates back to the early days of Mr. Christies political career.

In 1994, Mr. Christie was running to be a Morris County freeholder, the New Jersey version of a county commissioner.

"I support Planned Parenthood privately with my personal contribution, and that should be the goal of any such agency, to find private donations, Mr. Christie was quoted as saying in a Star-Ledger article. The article also quoted Mr. Christie as saying it"s also no secret that I am pro-choice.

Mr. Christies campaign said on Friday that Mr. Christie has no recollection of donating to Planned Parenthood.

Mr. Christie has since changed his views on abortion, and like other Republican presidential candidates, he supports cutting off federal funding for Planned Parenthood. As governor, he has vetoed funding for Planned Parenthood.

Explaining his shift on the issue of abortion rights, Mr. Christie tells a story from 1995, when his wife was pregnant with their second child and he heard the heartbeat of his unborn daughter during a prenatal visit.

On that ride home, I said my position just is not justifiable, he said last summer on Fox News. That"s a life, and I cannot countenance the taking of that life.

Trump, Cruz Double Down On Baffling Common Core Promises

Nanny helps explain Common Core subtraction

4937928

Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruzmaintainedtheir positions on Common Core in the Republican presidential primary debate Thursday, even after moderator Jake Tapper presented evidence their positions are built on falsehoods.

Both Trump and Cruz have repeatedly denounced Common Core on the campaign trail, and have promised to repeal it if elected. But Tapper pointed out that these pledges dont seem to make sense, since Common Core was created and adopted at the state level, and there is no federal Common Core program to repeal or abolish. (RELATED: Trumps Common Core Rhetoric Makes No Sense)

Tapper asked Trump what specifically distressed him about Common Core, and Trump quickly replied that it was education through Washington, D.C., and that hed prefer to have locally directed education.

Tapper quickly went after Trumps statement.

The Common Core standards were developed by the states, Tapper told Trump. States and localities voluntarily adopt them, and they come up with their own curricula to meet those standards. So when you say education by Washington D.C., what do you mean?

Its been taken over by the federal government, Trump said. It was originally supposed to be that way [locally controlled], and it certainly sounds better that way, but its all been taken over now by the bureaucrats in Washington, and they are not interested in whats happening in Miami or in Florida in many cases, theyre more interested in their paycheck and their big bureaucracy than they are in taking care of the children.

Trumps reply won applause from the audience, but nonetheless doesnt make much sense. Common Core has at times been promoted by the federal government (such as with the Race to the Top stimulus program), but it has never been controlled by it, and there are no Department of Education bureaucrats actively managing it. In fact, under current federal law, it would be illegal for the Department of Education to foist Common Core on the states.

Tapper then questioned John Kasich, the only remaining Republican candidate who supports Common Core, who pointed out that Common Core still allowsstates and school districts to set their own curricula.

A short time later, Tapper presented Cruz with a similar question.

[Sen. Cruz,] you object to Common Core, Tapper said. Gov. Kasich says its local school boards dveloping local curriculum to meet higher standards. Whats wrong with that?

Cruz provided only an indirect response.

Common Core is a disaster, he said. And if I am elected president, in the first days as president, I will direct the Department of Education that Common Core ends that day.

Cruz then offered an explanation of how the Obama administration had foisted Common Core on the states. The Obama administration has abused executive power in forcing Common Core on the states, he said. It has used Race to the Top funds to effectively blackmail and force the states to adopt Common Core.

[But] anything done with executive power can be undone with executive power, and I intend to do that, Cruz continued, before repeating his broader pledge to destroy the Department of Education entirely.

Cruzs claim contained some truth: the Obama administration did use Race to the Top to encourage Common Cores adoption. But it didnt force states to adopt it (four states never did), and Race to the Top ended years ago, so there is no longer any federal money at all being used to keep states tethered to Common Core.

Several states, such as Oklahoma and South Carolina, have already tweaked Common Core or repealed it entirely. Cruz, meanwhile, could not force the remaining states using Common Core to repeal it without running roughshod over current federal law, which forbids federal meddling in school standards.
