Cadillac ATS And ATS-V: The Ultimate Buyer"s Guide

LIVE Super Tuesday Coverage, Election Results Speeches, Donald Trump, Hillary, Bernie, Rubio, Cruz

The Cadillac ATS is d**n fine car even if it doesnt have a BMW badge on its hood. What do you need to know before you buy a Cadillac ATS? Dont worry, well tell you everything right here in the Ultimate Buyers Guide.

Cadillac is trying to turn its brand around from one that elicits thoughts of pink fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror and s**g carpet on the dash to one that elicits thoughts of fine engineering and excellent dynamic handling.

Basically, Cadillac doesnt want you to think they build boats anymore. They want you to think they build BMWs.

So it should be no surprise that Cadillac was gunning for the E46 BMWs handling when they designed this ATS, since that 3-Series was a d**n fine specimen.

Its great that GMs engineers set their functional objectives based on a strong competitive set that includes the likes of BMW and Mercedes. For us, that means we get a better handling vehicle. But its easy enough to appreciate the ATS for what it is, not for what its pretending to be. Its built on an excellent lightweight platform, it handles with precision, it comes with a stick, it gets a nice interior and manages to undercut the current 3-Series by a few grand. Thats a win in most peoples books, even if the 3-Series is a few tenths quicker through the twisties.

What Its Like To Drive

In a few years well probably start buying ATS sedans and coupes on the cheap and start turning them into race cars. Try doing that with an old Cimarron or Catera or STS or just about any previous generation Cadillac.

The handling is sharp, the steering is good, and the power is pretty decent depending on which engine you buy. Is it the best track-car made in the last ten years? No, of course not, but its got the right formula and they havent been as appreciated as they could be.

The car isnt perfect, either. The back-seat is about as unusable in the ATS sedan as it is in the coupe. The Caddys CUE system has been improved but its still not our favorite infotainment system. The car is attractive but a bit bland in sedan form.

It took years for the 3-Series to be recognized as the car it is and itll take generations for the ATS to get there, so its a good time to invest in an all-rounder.

Of course, throw all of that out when you talk about the ATS-V. If youre buying the twin-turbod V6 model you should just go straight to the track. That car is a lot like the second generation CTS-V in that its just the right amount of crazy with a focus on making the driver into a Euro-beating monster.

Just watch the video above.

Whats New About The 2016 Cadillac ATS

The Cadillac ATS launched in 2012 as GMs first application of its new Alpha Platform. With the BMW 3-Series in its crosshairs, the Lansing, Michigan-built mid-size luxury sedan spent much of its development time around the Nrburgring having its suspension tuned to better its odds against the German stalwart. Cadillac boasts about the cars low curb weight, 50/50 weight distribution and sophisticated suspension setup that allows for both refinement and precision.

That 2013 car came with a 2.5-liter I4, a 2.0-liter turbo I4, and a 3.6-liter V6. It also got plenty of tech like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, adaptive forward lighting, forward collision alert, an 8-inch touchscreen for its CUE in-car communications system, and lots more.

In 2014, Cadillac didnt do much to their small sports sedan, but in 2015, they launched a Coupe version of the ATS appropriately called the ATS Coupe. The ATS Coupe had revised styling over the previous ATS sedans, so in 2015, Cadillac switched up the sedans styling to match the coupes. Aside from a few additional gadgets inside and a bit more torque for the 2.0-liter turbo, that covers the changes for 2015.

But dont think Cadillac sat around playing Fallout after that new Coupe. No, for 2016, Cadillac launched a monster. A car that will give the other goliath in the Cadillac lineup, the CTS-V, a run for its money. The new monster is called the Cadillac ATS-V, and it boasts a 464 horsepower twin-turbo V6 along with a six-speed manual with rev matching, magnetic ride control and Brembo brakes. Its kind of awesome.

While the rest of the normal ATS variants were overshadowed by the ATS-V, they werent neglected for 2016. The 2.0-liter turbo got start/stop and the V6 got swapped for an all-new, more powerful 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 with cylinder deactivation. Also new for 2016 is the addition of 8-speed Hydra-Matic transmissions across the board. The CTS-V gets a beefier 8L90 unit, while the rest get the 8L45.

So GM put their heart and soul into the ATS, and theyve been continuing to keep it relevant with updates along the way.

Powertrain Breakdown

Cadillac is throwing a naturally aspirated four cylinder and a six cylinder into the ATS, as well as turbocharged four and six-pots. The base engine is a 202 horsepower 2.5-liter naturally aspirated, direct-injected inline four. This is the car you rent. A step up from that engine is a turbocharged direct-injected two liter turbo making 272 ponies. This is a car you buy.

Get into the V6s, and you get either a naturally aspirated direct-injected 333 horsepower 3.6-liter or, if you go with the ATS-V, the mighty turbocharged, 464 stallion V6 with the same displacement.

All non-V models come with a Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic transmission, though the 2.0-liter can be had with a six-speed manual for no additional charge. The 3.6-liter twin turbo-powered ATS-V gets a Tremec T6060 six-speed manual transmission as standard and for an extra two grand, gets a beefy Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed auto.

Gas mileage is decent across the board. Anything but the V model and the all-wheel drive trims will get you 30 MPG highway, and that aint bad.

The 202 horsepower 2.5-liter I4 and the 272 2.0-liter pony turbo I4 are the thriftiest, managing 26 MPG combined. Yes, despite the additional 70 horsepower, the 2.0-liter matches the 2.5s fuel economy, though the 2.5 uses standard fuel and the 2.0 requires premium.

The 3.6-liter is still in the same playing field, scoring 24 MPG combined. thats a number that may seem a bit underwhelming, considering cars like the 500 pound-heavier Chrysler 300 can achieve very similar economy figures.

Opt for the CTS-V and your combined fuel economy goes down the toilet and into the teens. But youll be smoking those tires down woodward avenue with those 464 horses, so you might forgive a bit of guzzling here and there.

Technically, the Cadillac ATS comes as four different models: The ATS Sedan, the ATS-V Sedan, the ATS Coupe and the ATS-V Coupe. The ATS-Vs come only in standard trim, but the regular 2.5-liter comes in either Standard or Luxury trims, the 3.6-liter comes in either Luxury, Performance or Premium, and the 2.0-liter turbo can be had in any of these four trims.

Front brake discs on non ATS-V trims are either 11.8-inches on standard sedan trims or 12.6-inches for coupes and higher trim sedans. The 12.6-inchers are Brembos clamped by four-piston calipers. Rears on all ATSs are single-piston calipers squeezing 12.4-inch rotors. The ATS-V gets big brakes. Six-piston calipers squeeze brake pads against 14.5-inch rotors in the front, while four-piston calipers create the friction against 13.3-inch discs out back.

All ATSs get a MacPherson strut suspension up front, a five-link setup in the back and electric power steering.

Which One Wed Buy

In a year thats been full of amazing cars, the ATS-V is near the top of the list. With more than 460 horsepower shoved into a light-weight chassis with all of GMs racing-inspired suspension tuning, its an idiosyncratic way to have your fun. Sure, its $60,000, but there arent that many luxury cars you can get at this price that are this fun to drive. If thats a little rich for your blood, theres nothing wrong with the 2.0-liter turbo mated to a six-speed transmission.

Court rejects lawsuit by kidnapping survivor Jaycee Dugard

"Let"s get one thing straight! My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard."
FILE - In this Tuesday, May 7, 2013 file photo, Jaycee Dugard, right, who was abducted as a child and held for 18 years, and her mother, Terry Probyn, appear with their Hope Award at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children annual Hope Awards in Washington. A federal appeals court says the federal government cannot be held responsible for Dugard"s 1991 abduction. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Dugard was not a victim of her kidnapper, Phillip Garrido, at the time he was placed under federal supervision. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The federal government cannot be held responsible for kidnapping survivor Jaycee Dugards 1991 abduction and subsequent 18 years in captivity, an appeals court said Tuesday.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Dugards lawsuit alleging federal parole officials should have revoked her abductors parole well before he kidnapped her, but failed to do their jobs.

Phillip Garrido was on parole following his conviction on kidnapping and forcible rape charges when he and his wife Nancy abducted 11-year-old Jaycee from a California street and kept her captive in a backyard compound. Garrido repeatedly raped her over years and fathered two daughters with her.

The appeals court said in a 2-1 decision that Dugard had not been victimized by Garrido at the time he was placed under federal parole supervision, and there was no way to anticipate she would become his victim. As a result, federal authorities in California had no duty to protect her or other members of the general public from him, the court said. The decision upheld a lower court ruling.

A message for Dugards attorney, Dale Kinsella, was not immediately returned.

Dugard alleged in her lawsuit against the federal government that parole officials should have returned Garrido to prison for any number of parole violations that preceded her abduction, including testing positive for drugs and alcohol.

In a dissenting opinion, Chief District Court Judge William Smith said the majority had improperly analyzed Dugards case, and there was good reason to hold the government liable.

Dugard was identified and rescued in 2009 after Garrido took her and the girls to a meeting with his parole officer

Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years to life for kidnapping and rape. His wife Nancy was sentenced to 36 years to life.

Dugard and her children have received a $20 million settlement from the state of California.

Holy Cross basketball senior Molly Hourigan embraces role as team leader

Holy Cross Men"s Basketball Earns NCAA Tournament Berth
WORCESTER When senior forward Raquel Scott went down with a career-ending knee injury Dec. 2, the Holy Cross womens basketball team lost its best player, leading scorer and top rebounder.Coach Bill Gibbons appealed to his players Everyone has to step up in her role, Gibbons said, to try to replace Scotts 16 points and nine rebounds per game.Expectations were especially increased for senior center Molly Hourigan. We talked to Molly about her role as a rebounder and scoring inside, Gibbons said. She had to become more of a force on the boards and scoring on the block. The 6-foot-4 Hourigan averaged 9.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 32 minutes, all career highs, and matched her career high with 77 blocked shots, which ranked third in the Patriot League and is the fourth highest single-season total in Holy Cross history.Overall, Im pretty happy (with how the season has gone), Hourigan said. Its definitely a different role for me and the coaches have helped me define that role as more of an offensive threat and more rebounding and more minutes. I think Ive adjusted to it pretty well. I needed to do it for the team.Hourigan earned All-Patriot League third-team honors. Senior guard Lisa Mifsud and sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed were named to the second team. With 10 points and 10 rebounds, Hourigan posted her seventh double-double of the year in HCs regular-season finale at Loyola, but the Crusaders, hoping for a top-four seed and home game in the Patriot League Tournament lost, 58-45, and ended up with the No. 5 seed. HC (13-16, 10-8) plays at No. 4 Lehigh in a quarterfinal Monday night. We definitely wanted a home game, Hourigan said, but weve been good at Lehigh before and we can be again. The Crusaders split with the Mountain Hawks this year, winning at home and losing on the road. While watching tape of HCs thrilling overtime win against Lehigh at the Hart Center, Hourigans performance, especially at the defensive end, stood out to Gibbons. In OT, Hourigan had a rebound, a block, an assist, a steal and two points. She was a force in there, said Gibbons, who switched to a zone defense with Hourigan and four guards in the lineup in the second half. Our zone wouldnt have been as good without her in there blocking shots and intimidating people.Hourigan played behind Emily Parker last year and made 11 starts. She averaged 4.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. This season, shes had 12 double-digit rebounding games, including a career-high 17 against Colgate Jan. 2.Molly, to her credit, has really stepped up, Gibbons said, and just became a better rebounder, a more aggressive rebounder. I have a lot of respect for what shes done.Hourigan, a biology major and excellent student, is a well-respected figure on campus. In addition to being a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy and SPUD (Student Programs for Urban Development), a community service organization sponsored by the Chaplains Office, this year Hourigan is serving as co-executive director, along with fellow Holy Cross senior Brendan Healey, of Working for Worcester, the wonderful student-run community initiative that betters recreational areas for the citys children.Working for Worcester was co-founded by HC graduates Jeffrey Reppucci and Derek Kump, both former hockey players, in 2012. Since then, the group has renovated numerous playgrounds, community gardens, schoolyard basketball courts and other spaces. This years project day is April 16, and among the 18 undertakings is building a dance studio at Vernon Hill School, building playgrounds at the Goddard School and at Plumley Village and a basketball court at Union Hill School.Hourigan has been involved with Working for Worcester since she was a freshman.Jeff really inspired me to get more involved with the community, Hourigan said. My freshman year, the basketball team painted hopscotch and four-square games, cleaned up the landscaping and installed monkey bars at Belmont Street Community School. We went back a couple weeks later and saw kids playing out there. That was awesome, and that inspired me to keep volunteering with this great organization and every year Ive had a bigger leadership role.As co-executive director, Hourigan oversees volunteer recruitment, tools and inventory and helps the site developers with site plans.Growing up near Syracuse, N.Y., Hourigan volunteered in food pantries, at the SUNY Upstate Medical University and at a hospice care house. My parents (Ed and Karen) always taught me to give back to the community, Hourigan said, and that carried over here.Hourigan plans to go to medical school and she would like to be a pediatrician.I love working with kids, Hourigan said. The Working for Worcester motto is for the kids. Ive always enjoyed coaching at basketball camps. I think pediatrics would be great for me.Hourigan has not only taken the Jesuit ideal of men and women for others to heart, she has lived it.Gibbons nominated her for a Presidents Volunteer Service Award. She embodies everything we talk about as a program, Gibbons said, giving her all in the classroom, on the court and in the community.Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com. Man killed in St. Louis home, another shot and injured in the confusion that followed

Tina Turner Chokes Up When Talking About Robbie - Welcome to Sweetie Pie"s - Oprah Winfrey Network

UPDATED at 5p.m. with more information about the victim.

ST. LOUIS A man who was shot and killed Monday night inside a home near Fairground Park was the grandson of Robbie Montgomery, owner of Sweetie Pies restaurants.

Andre Montgomery, 21, was killed in the shooting about 8 p.m. inside the home in the 3900 block of Natural Bridge Avenue, police said Tuesday.

He had appeared in past seasons on the familys reality TV show, Welcome to Sweetie Pies, on the Oprah Winfrey Network. He graduated in 2013 from McCluer North High School, and the ceremony was featured on the show.

Our hearts are with Miss Robbie, Andres Uncle Tim Norman and the rest of the Sweetie Pies family, OWN President Sheri Salata said in a written statement.

The show also documented Andre Montgomerys transition after struggles in school and moving from Texas to the St. Louis area, as well as a visit to the grave of his father, Andre Montgomery Sr.

I want Andre to become a successful man, Robbie Montgomery said in the episode that included his high school graduation. And now I think he knows whatever he wants to do, if he puts forth the effort, he can do it.

His family could not be reached Tuesday.

A second man was shot and injured Monday night in the confusion after the shooting of Andre Montgomery.

Another man, 22, ran upstairs to help Montgomery after the shooting, police said. That man was armed with a firearm.

A third man who was in the home didnt know the second man was there until he appeared with the gun. The third man opened fire with his own gun because he feared for his safety, police said.

The 22-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition with wounds to the chest and arm, police said.

Police dont know who shot Montgomery, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot in the head.

Montgomery"s killing was at least the 25th homicide of the year in the city. Authorities asked anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477.

WASHINGTON Here are five things you need to know about Merrick Garland, President Obama"s nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia:

Long appellate tenure

He"s served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, a traditional steppingstone to the high court, for 19 years and is now its chief judge.

Past Republican favorite

Several times in the past, he has been touted by Republican senators as the most palatable possible choice (but now they say no chance). In 1997 he was confirmed by the Senate to the appellate bench on a 76-23 vote, which included the backing of 32 Republicans.

Roberts" rsum

Like Chief Justice John Roberts, he went to Harvard Law School, clerked for federal appeals court Judge Henry Friendly, served at the Justice Department, was a law firm partner and wound up on the D.C. Circuit.

Oklahoma City

He managed the 1995 investigation into the Oklahoma City bombing, which at the time was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. A year later, he was named to oversee theUnabomber inquiry following the 1996 arrest of Ted Kaczynski.

He"s no Scalia

Friends and colleagues describe him as a low-key, unassuming person who does not seek the limelight, quite unlike the man he would replace, Antonin Scalia. (Good luck with that.)

It was recently revealed that Yvonne had an abortion a few years ago. Will this storyline be explored in the upcoming episodes? Will this impact Yvonne"s relationship with Toby?

I think it was amazing that the show was willing to explore this subject and I think it was handled very well. I think more details could come out about it however, Toby has known about it for a while so I don"t think it will harm their relationship.

Caleb previously teased Toby about building a house for Yvonne and Toby also planned on proposing to his new girlfriend. Will we see anymore engagements or weddings take place this season?

I think that an engagement or wedding could be a big possibility. Toby really loves Yvonne and Caleb and Spencer are growing quite strong. However, with everyone working together in the finale we see if the feelings are still there.

In the upcoming final episode of season 6, we will see Toby and Spencer work together to track down Sara Harvey. How will this impact Yvonne and Toby"s relationship?

I think Spoby working together again will affect our relationship. For the first time, Yvonne is a little insecure and wonders if Toby has unresolved feelings for Spencer.

Were you a fan of "Pretty Little Liars" prior to taking on the role of Yvonne? If yes, were you a Spoby fan or do you think Toby should end up with your character?

I was a huge fan of the show before coming on board. My mother, sister and I would watch every week and discuss our theories. I was a big Spoby supporter, as so many others are, and as a fan I was so surprised I would be the one to come between them. However, with my relationship with Toby and Spencer"s with Caleb progresses, I can really see a future for both couples.

Do you have any theories on who Uber A is? Can you tease whether or not Yvonne will have an interaction with the villainous character?

I think Uber A is someone we never saw coming, a character that is talked about but rarely seen. I would love to see Yvonne interact with the likes of Sara Harvey or even Melissa, in true PLL fashion everyone is a suspect.
