Dancer Haruka Weiser Identified as University of Texas Murder Victim
A 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of University of Texas freshman Haruka Weiser, police said Friday.
Haruka Weiser is seen in photos from Facebook.
The suspect, identified as Meechaiel Criner, had been taken to a youth homeless shelter by police Monday after he was found at the scene of a trash fire near campus, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters Friday.
The fire occurred a day before the victims body was discovered.
Weisers body was found around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in a creek near the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center, on the university campus in Austin, not far from the schools football stadium, officials said.
Investigators dont have a clue what the motive was for the homicide, Acevedo said.
No parent should ever have to bury a child, especially a beautiful young woman like Haruka, with such a beautiful spirit, the police chief said.
The arrest came after Austin firefighters alerted police about the small fire, which involved a book bag that may have contained some of Weisers belongings, Austin Fire Department spokeswoman Michelle Tanzola said.
Firefighters remembered the trash fire after seeing surveillance video police released of a possible suspect a day later, officials said.
A woman who saw a young man start the fire also contacted police after seeing the video, telling investigators the youth resembled the person in the video, Acevedo said.
At the scene of the small trash fire Monday, firefighters found Criner allegedly in possession of a womans bicycle and a blue duffel bag that resembled one owned by the victim, Acevedo said.
Police later recovered items believed to belong to the victim at the fire scene.
The suspect was arrested at the shelter Thursday. He allegedly had items believed to belong to Weiser, police said.
We are very certain that the subject we have in custody is the suspect responsible for the death of this beautiful young woman, Acevedo said Friday.
The police chief said additional charges may be filed, and he shared a message from the victims mother.
She told me please tell all your officers, please tell everyone at the University of Texas everyone involved in this investigation, thank you, he said. But also please tell them to take care of themselves and go home and hug your children, not once but twice.
At a news conference, University President Gregory L. Fenves said the school was taking measures and (doing) everything we can to improve the safety of the campus, including increased patrols and a safety and security assessment.
There had not been a homicide on campus since 1966, according to Acevedo.
Surveillance video of suspect
Authorities this week announced that they believed they had a suspect and asked for the publics help in identifying him.
Troy Gay, assistant police chief at the Austin Police Department, showed surveillance video of the suspect walking with a bike.
Weisers death shook many on the Austin campus, with Fenves telling reporters that our home has been violated.
Our hearts go out to the victim and her family, he said, and we will be investigating this very actively.
Weiser, a first-year theater and dance major, was last seen leaving the drama building Sunday night.
A beloved daughter, sister and friend
In a statement this week, Weisers family thanked the university community for its support and asked for privacy.
In addition to dance, Weiser was declaring a second major in premed and had plans to visit family in Japan this summer. She was remembered as a beloved daughter, sister and friend.
Although Haruka loved to perform on stage she never sought the spotlight in her daily life. Perhaps the last thing she would want is to be the poster child for any cause.
And yet, as we struggle to understand why she was killed, if her death can somehow make it safer for a young woman to walk home, if it will prevent another assault or murder, then at least we could find some meaning behind an otherwise senseless and tragic death, her family wrote.
Dance faculty members first met Weiser when she performed at the National High School Dance Festival more than two years ago. They recruited her to go to UT from her home in Oregon.
She was mourned there by Dance West, where she used to dance.
With indescribable sadness, we mourn the tragic loss of one of our very own, Haruka Weiser. Please join us in honoring this bright and beautiful Dance West alum dancer/family member and friend who has touched the hearts of us all. Rest in Peace & Power, Dance West posted on Facebook.
Jessica Sanchez - "THIS LOVE" [Official Music Video]
For anyone who has ever heard Jessica Sanchez sing, you know as well as anyone how great she is. She left an indelible mark on American Idol, and now, she is (slowly, but surely) leaving her imprint on pop music. Joining forces with friend and fellow music-maker Leroy Sanchez (and no, theyre not related), the two singers give Justin Biebers The Feeling(originally featuring alt-pop singer Halsey) an appropriate and powerfully emotiveoverhaul.
The clip (below) begins with Leroy and a group of friends having a jam session on a rooftop to Beyonces Love on Top. Meanwhile, Jessica is sullen, contemplating her feelings and struggling with what to do next. Whenthe smooth R&B tune kicks in, the footage follows them in a split screen format as they try to find the truth. Did you enjoy the Sanchez power? We know we sure did.

National Beer Day: How many beers can you name in 30 seconds?
Thirsty Thursday, a day when many students celebrate with a drink or two, or more, if theyve scheduled their Fridays to not have early classes, coincided with something else this week.
April 7 is also National Beer Day. Twitter is packed with people and company hashtagging the day to raise a virtual pint in honor of their favorite lager or ale.
But before you raise too many, you might want to think about how you are getting home.
State police at Rockview announced Thursday that throughout April, they will be conducting sobriety checkpoint tests.
Motorists encountering the sobriety checkpoint will be stopped briefly. When there is an indication that a driver may be under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, or who is in violation of any other Pennsylvania Vehicle Code or Crimes Code violation, will be detained for further investigation, police said.
Any law-breaking will be addressed, they said, but the main point is to prevent DUI.
Its the kind of thing you might think would make beer producers sad, but the police werent the only ones putting out statements on Thursday.
The Pennsylvania Beer Alliance didnt send out anything celebrating National Beer Day. Instead, they put out a release observing a different occasion. April, it seems, is also Alcohol Awareness Month.
Alcohol abuse comes in many forms, including underage drinking, drunk driving and excessive consumption, said President Jay Wiederhold. I believe its very important we take the month of April to focus on these issues and to raise awareness.
About 4,000 people work in the production of beer in Pennsylvania, a state that creates brands like Yuengling and Troegs, plus smaller craft and specialty producers like Centre Countys own Ottos, Happy Valley, Robin Hood and Elk Creek.
We think about these issues all year long, but its good to have a month to remind our members and customers of the importance of ensuring that alcoholic beverages are effectively regulated as we do in April, said Wiederhold.
Emergency crews were called to Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland for reports of a shooting (Photo: WOAI/KABB)

SAN ANTONIO - An airman shot his commander in an apparent murder-suicide Friday at the Lackland Medina Annex during an active shooter situation on Friday morning,.a senior U.S. official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn"t authorized to publicly discuss the shooting at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
Two handguns were found near the bodies of the men, which were inside a building that"s used for classrooms and offices, according to Brig. Gen. Robert LaBrutta, who oversees Joint Base San Antonio. He stressed that the shooting was not an act of terrorism, and declined to identify the two, saying their families must be notified first. The Air Force"s Office of Special Investigations is leading the investigation, and the FBI is assisting.
Lt. Col. Bobby Ford said emergency crews responded to the situation within three minutes of the initial call. Eight minutes later, they found the bodies of two people on a first floor of building 147, which is located on the Lacklack Medina Annex. No other victims were located during the search. An immediate lockdown was put in place while officers from the Bexar County Sheriff"s Office and the San Antonio Police Department began the process of clearing buildings.
The fatal shooting of the two is the latest to occur at a military facility in Texas in the last several years. In January 2015, an Army veteran and former clerk at the veterans" clinic at Fort Bliss in El Paso shot and killed a psychologist, then killed himself. About a year earlier, three soldiers were killed and 16 wounded in an attack at Fort Hood near Killeen by Army Spc. Ivan A. Lopez, who also killed himself. And in the deadliest attack to occur at a U.S. military installation, 13 people were killed and 31 were wounded in a mass shooting in 2009 at Fort Hood. Nidal Hasan, a former U.S. Army major, was convicted and sentenced to death in that shooting.
Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland is the home of Air Force basic training. The Army"s Fort Sam Houston and Air Force"s Lackland and Randolph bases were combined during base realignment several years ago to become the military"s largest joint base.
Viewers reached out through social media channels to say they were on lockdown. The South San ISD and Northside ISD also placed several schools on lockdown. The lockdown at Lackland was lifted by 10:17 a.m. The lockdowns at the schools were all lifted by the 11 a.m. hour.
In a separate development, a senior reporter for the Air Force Times reported an airman shot a commanding officer and quoted an internal Pentagon memo. That tweet has since been deleted.
PGA TOUR players hit vintage clubs at Northern Trust Open
April 7, 2016
Pro golfs top association appears to be adopting an if you cant beat em, join em approach regarding the online sports betting industry.
On Thursday, Bloomberg News reported that the PGA Tour had issued a request for proposals (RFP) for sports data companies to submit bids on providing real-time tournament info to online sports betting operators.
The RFP document viewed by Bloomberg states that the PGA Tour continues to explore the risk/return trade-off associated with potential entry into the online sports gaming category. The RFP also seeks to explore other financial upside options, including revenue/profit sharing or equity deals.
The RFP said it would evaluate all responses before determining a course of action. A spokesman told Bloomberg that the Tour was far away from any kind of deal while insisting that the Tour issues such RFPs all the time.
Among the companies reportedly vying for the PGA Tour data contract are WME/IMG, which holds exclusive rights to official ATP/WTA tennis data, and Sportradar, which provides data on a variety of sports to bookmakers around the globe.
Other pro sports bodies have ventured down this data road before, only to retreat at the last minute. Last April, the National Football League inked a data deal with a US affiliate of Sportradar, but clamped down hard in November after that same affiliate promoted an in-play DFS app that vowed to eventually launch full sports betting for cash (in territories where authorized).
The PGA has a complicated relationship with the betting industry. In September, the PGA formally prohibited its members from endorsing or playing on daily fantasy sports sites, based on the PGAs belief that DFS sites are considered illegal in many states and thus PGA members participation in DFS contests amounted to conduct unbecoming of a professional.
Some PGA members are more, er, professional than others in terms of their approach to betting. Phil Mickelson is notorious for his betting activity with other PGA members and (allegedly) with illegal online sportsbooks.
Golfs gatekeepers are undoubtedly aware of their sports waning popularity with younger demographics, and the expectation appears to be that in-play betting would give golfs appeal a badly needed boost among the mobile betting set.
