As 9-year-old Morgan House watched the Centennial Olympic Games from the shores of Lake Lanier, the worlds best kayakers paddled through the lakes still waters.
Little did he know he would be managing those waters nearly 20 years later.
Today, House is venue manager at the Lake Lanier Olympic Park on Clarks Bridge Road in Gainesville. Hes something of a Gainesville kayaking legend, having competed professionally in more than 30 countries before coming back to his hometown.
This week, the Olympic park will host the Canoe/Kayak Pan American Championships for the first time in its history. The games are the continental qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, meaning any canoe or kayak athlete on the continent seeking to compete in the Rio Summer Games must come through Gainesville first.
Those are high stakes House knows well, having competed in the Pan Am games himself years ago.
I started paddling in 1995, when I was 8 years old, House said. By 1996, I came and watched the Olympics here, and I was obviously very inspired. So I joined the club on the first day they opened.
House trained with the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club recreationally, becoming more involved in middle school.
In 2003, I qualified for the Junior World Championship team, to compete at the Junior Worlds in Komatsu, Japan, he said. Thats when I really got excited.
House said he did really poorly in Japan, but he qualified again in 2005 for the Junior Worlds, placing fifth in the world in Szeged, Hungary. To this day, that is still the best American kayaker performance in Junior Worlds history.
He lived and trained at the Olympic training center in Chula Vista, Calif., for five years, which would lead him to win the U.S. Olympic trials in 2008 and the Pan Am games in 2008.
Its a crazy selection process, and I wasnt selected to go compete in Beijing, he said. I did not make the team in 2012, so I decided to pursue a professional career path of some sort.
In total, he competed in 12 world cups and six world championships in more than 30 countries.
House is a Gainesville High School graduate who today has a bachelors degree in marketing and public relations from Ashford University. He previously served as a high-performance canoe/kayak coach for the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club before assuming the position as venue manager for the Olympic park.
House entered the bid for the venue to host the Pan Am games last year. The Lanier site beat out bids from Montreal, Canada, and Curitiba, Brazil.
The championships are the latest in a long line of international events Lake Lanier has held since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Most recently, it served as host to the U.S. National Team trials and team trials for Canada.
For House, bringing the Pan Am games to Gainesville is coming full circle.
Its really exciting, he said. It makes me very nostalgic. I want to be out there competing, and a lot of the same people I competed against will be here. Its fun seeing them and reconnecting.
House has been venue manager two years now, and he said the current $1.1 million renovation project at the park is one of the highlights.
But the big highlight now is seeing the community rally around this place, he said. I think the community cares more about this venue now than they ever have ever, except maybe in 1996. So thats a really big highlight and its great to see.

It was a very handsome red carpet at the premiere of The Nice Guys at TCL Chinese Theatre yesterday (May 10, 2016) in Hollywood, California.
Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer (with his husband Simon Halls) and Russell Crowe all posed for the photographers on the red carpet.
Ryan wore a blue suit and light blue tie with a red flowerwhile Russell kept his sunglasses on walking the carpet. While Matt went for a black suit and blue tie.
The movie is set In 1977 Los Angeles, and centers around a down-on-his-luck private eye (Ryan Gosling) works with a hired enforcer (Russell Crowe) to investigate the disappearance of a girl and the death of a p**n star. In the process, he uncovers a dangerous conspiracy, and that is where Bomers character comes in.
Who do you think was the best dressed on the red carpet. Let us know in the comments below.
Im sorry, but I cant bring myself to hate this song. Go Flex broke my spell of Post Malone dismissal, and I dont know if going back is an option. Until now, Posts career has been anchored by his two wildly successful songs, White Iverson and Too Young, which are essentially the same. He sings in an echoing ballad voice over sleepy, dreamlike FKi beats. The stunt-rap content of his lyrics always made the dramatism of his voice seem funny, if not gimmicky. Like he was almost in tears with hollow longing, but he was talking about swagging upon you.
Go Flex brings that same content to a new sonic palette, a campfire-like acoustic guitar. Its a series of simple, on-beat chords reminiscent of that kid at your high school who always brought out his guitar when nobody asked him. But fused cleverly with FKis drums, it becomes this irresistible, stadium-worthy anthem. You can already see Post cutting out the music to hear thousands of fans scream back the words, Gold on my teeth and on my neck.
People clowned Post when a video surfaced of him playing a cover to Bob Dylans Dont Think Twice, Its Alright, but really it just showed that he had a musical background, the fingerpicking on that song requires legitimate technical skill. Theres nothing shameful about growing up on folk. Finally, it seems, Post has prepared the world to accept his marriage of folk with 2016 drums. And again, theatrical vocals make for a sort of comical compositionlike, his desire to flex matches the emotional response of a loved one dying.
Post, of course, is not the first to experiment with this kind of sound. Bubba Sparxxx did a prototypical version with Deliverance in 2003. In that case, it fused the folk guitar with Timbalands characteristic, energetic drums, but the sound of it matched the introspective content; he was a weary traveler, not a flexer. David Banners Cadillac on 22s, also from 2003, combined a fingerpicked guitar with his own Southern-informed drums. In that case, though, he was using the idea of flexing in contrast, bemoaning the state of his home, Mississippi, and venting about his rocky relationship with G*d.
Meanwhile, Post Malone told Fader Go Flex is really just about stuntin, showing you got the sauce. In my case, it worked. Im now a convert, and no other song succeeds in making me feel closer to the sensation of flexing than this. Perhaps this is an underrated musical quality. It doesn"t always have to be that deep.

Shields and Gerson on the Obama transgender decree, Trump’s campaign
TEL AVIV, Israel The young Israeli lieutenant harbored a huge secret for years she was he.
The moment of truth came when a group of cadets asked why the officer they knew as a female was wearing a man"s uniform.
"I [came] to a conclusion that I cannot be an officer and a commander when I"m hiding this major secret," the 22-year-old told NBC News. "If I expect my soldiers to be honest with me I have to do the same with them. I told them I see myself as a man for all my entire life."
As Israel"s first transgender military officer, the lieutenant requested that NBC News identify him as "Shachar," which means Dawn in Hebrew. Shachar said he did not want to garner undue attention while serving.

Shachar, who was born in a kibbutz in southern Israel, knew from a young age that he did not want to be a girl.
According to his parents, at the age of two he asked to have his hair shaved off. When he was four, he told them he no longer wanted to wear dresses.
From that moment on he looked like a boy, but did not know how to explain his feelings. It wasn"t until Shachar was 16 that he learned the term "transgender" and the missing piece of the puzzle fell into place.
"In a period of three months I told my parents and closest friends and it was a great moment of feeling free," he told NBC News in an interview at Tel Aviv"s Kirya military base.
While Shachar knew from childhood that he identified as a boy, he also knew that his future was in the military, where his mother and father both had been officers.
Israel"s armed forces are among the most accepting when it comes to issues of gender identity, according to Oded Frid, the former CEO of the Israeli National LGBT Task Force rights group.
The army cancelled its equivalent of the U.S. "don"t ask, don"t tell" policy and began drafting openly gay recruits in the late 1990s, Frid said. In America, the policy wasn"t suspended until 2011.
"Compared to other armies in the world Israel"s army is more advanced in its approach and official policy towards the LGBT community but ... in a lot of other areas in the country we are not advanced," Frid said. "Nowhere in the Israeli law is there any recognition for LGBTs in any way and in many areas even discriminates [against] them."
The first openly transgender person enlisted in the Israeli army in 2000. Today there are dozens, according to Lt. Col. Limor Shabtai, the military"s gender adviser.

According to Israeli law, a citizen can initiate the gender-reassignment process at the age of 18, which coincides with the mandatory draft age.
"The army"s policy is that being transgender is not an obstacle for being enlisted," Shabtai said. "I make sure to talk to every commander where a transgender serves and give them guidelines on how to deal with this situation."
Joining the army was an obvious choice for Shachar, but handling the concept of being a woman was not. However he joined the military, and was drafted as a female.
"My biggest and hardest moment going into the army was standing on line to receive my uniform," he said. "I was listed as female so they gave me the women"s uniform. I took the biggest size you can get so it would not look feminine in any way."
To solve the issue of what to wear, Shachar"s commanding officer allowed him to wear a unisex uniform. They also let him shower at different times in the women"s barracks.
Shabtai says she regularly receives questions from young recruits about coming out.
Shachar, who has started receiving medical treatment, said his colleagues have been supportive.
"My closest commanders wanted to help me however they could and this is very special," he said. "It made me feel that they really wanted me to succeed here in the army and this is what I want young soldiers now to feel."
