The Orlando Pulse massacre in June shocked the country, and it quickly became clear that the shooting had taken place in a gay nightclub. But it was also Latin night at Pulse, and the shooting took place on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day festival. The 49 victims were largely Latino and gay, many of them Puerto Rican.

Latino and Latina LGBTQ people and their families already face challenges others may not, from language barriers to fear of deportation. That divide becamemore apparent in the effort to get support to victims and their families.

Carlos Guillermo Smithtook a seat with his back to thedowntown memorial to the Pulse victims.

Its kinda hard to look at, he said. This happened to my community, to my people. So many of the victims were young, gay Latino men. Thats me.

His organization, Equality Florida, has helped raise more than $7 million for victims in one of the largest GoFundMe campaigns ever.

There were a lot of cultural obstacles to getting through this tragedy, he said.

For example, the organizations raising funds and providing mental health support initially put out information only in English.

Henry Lim, head of the Hispanic Bar Association of central Florida, got called in to help with bilingual legal services.

There were 321 people there that night, and many of them were undocumented, and theyre afraid to come forward, so we want to make sure that these people understand that they have rights as well, he said.

He and several dozen other bilingual lawyers have been helping with a slew of issues, including landlord-tenant problems and helping families from abroad get visas to attend memorials. Hes also personally working on six applications for U visas for survivors those can give legal status to crime victims who cooperate in an investigation, although theres usually a long wait to get a U visa.

Isa Noyola with the Transgender Law Center said all this reflects things queer Latina, Latino and Latinx (a gender-neutral term) people are already facing, from fear of deportation to job discrimination and violence.

There is a beautiful community that is thriving and surviving with little to no support, she said.

She and a group of other Latinx organizers from around the country flew to Orlando for several weeks after the tragedy to try to support local people in making their voices heard. She said lots of LGBTQ organizations dont have Latinas in leadership or their issues in mind, while lots of Hispanic groups dont want to address homophobia or transphobia.

Acknowledging the victims full identities, she said, at least helps guarantee that the millions of dollars flowing into Orlando get to the right people.

I think that in this moment, the least that they can do is to acknowledge all of who these individuals were. And a failure to do that is continuing the violence that happened that evening, she said.

Is Jared Kushner the "Court Jew" of Donald Trump"s Realm?

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner return after son Theodore"s bris

The Leader has everything: money, land, power. Theres just one thing missing, the support of the Godly. The Leader has never been big on religion. In fact, hes a little concerned that many of his Christian supporters are openly anti-Semitic. Thats a problem, since the Leader owes the Jews big time. Many of his fathers biggest land deals and the Leader wouldnt be the Leader without his father were made with the Jews.

So the Leader comes up with a brilliant plan. h**l marry his beautiful daughter to Hebrew nobility, a real Prince of the Jews. That way, no matter how egregiously anti-Semitic he and his followers might appear, he can always say but look at my son-in-law, you dont get more Jewish than him!

If this story sounds familiar, then youre pretty well up on the story of Charlemagne. It was in the late 8th century that Charles the Great, more commonly known as Charlemagne, made good on his fathers promise to give the Jews of southern France the kingdom of Septimania, to thank the Jews for betraying their Muslim neighbors and opening the gates to the Franks. Charlemagne insisted, however, that the Jews of Septimania send for a Prince from the House of King David to travel to the south of France and rule over the Kingdom. Legend had it that Jesus was descended from King David, and Charlemagne was keen to marry his daughter to a Jew who would not only cement the support of the Jewish people, but make his grandchildren the legitimate sons of the Son of G*d.

There may be many reasons why Donald the Great married his daughter Ivanka to a modern prince of the Jews, Jared Kushner. Some of them may have nothing to do with Charles the Greats instincts for political protection, dynasty building, anti-Muslim sentiment and prime shoreside property. In the course of his father-in-laws campaign for President, Kushner has done what Court Jews have done over the centuries rationalized insults for the sake of survival. He has played his heritage as a grandchild of a Holocaust survivor as, well, a Trump card against those who have attacked Donald the Great for his unwillingness to distance himself from anti-Semitic supporters and their attacks on his opponent (the mother-in-law herself of a nice Jewish boy) that make use of historically anti-Jewish images.

Between The Charles and The Donald, there have been scores of famous anti-Semites who kept a Court Jew close at hand. Because of the Catholic injunction against money-lending, Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain turned to Isaac Abravanel to finance their 15th-century wars against the Muslims. When the wars were over and Ferdinand and Isabella decided to clear Spain not only of the Muslims but also of Abravanels Jewish brethren, Abravanel sent his patrons more silver in the hope that they might change their minds. They didnt.

The German Jewish banker Joseph Sss Oppenheimer was one of the more famous Court Jews of the 18th century, serving as banker for Duke Karl Alexander of Wrtemmberg until the death of his protector. At that point the Jew Sss, as he was later immortalized on page, stage, and screen, was hanged and left in an open cage in the public square of Stuttgart for six years.

As the Republicans slouch towards Cleveland, it is worth remembering another coronation in Rome. On Christmas Day 800 CE, with his daughter and her Jewish husband, the new King of Septimania, at his side, Charlemagne entered St. Peters Basilica, knelt on the stone floor, and had himself crowned Holy Roman Emperor. By the end of the century, Charlemagne and his Empire were dead, destroyed by infighting and a bad case of Vikings. And Charlemagnes son-in-law the Jewish King of Septimania had long since been forgotten.

Jonathan Levi is the author of the novels A Guide for the Perplexed and the recent Septimania.

Paul Ryan emphasizes community in fight against poverty

Watch House Speaker Paul Ryan"s full speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention

Last week, House Speaker Paul Ryan sat down with NPR to discuss, among other things, poverty. As the highest ranking member of the House, Ryan has a crucial opportunity to change the way the government addresses poverty. In his plans to confront this issue, Ryan keeps community efforts and local solutions central.

During the last four years, Ryan made visits to several poverty-stricken areas with community organizer Bob Woodson in order to better understand the challenges these struggling communities face. Through these visits, Ryan recognized the influence of community groups and the importance of supporting the efforts of those who have found and are implementing effective local programs.

I see problems that can be fixed because I see solutions that are actually occurring. Thats whats exciting about this issue because there are people in communities who are actually out there fighting poverty eye to eye, soul to soul, in neighborhoods that actually do well, that succeed

I want to make sure that in these communities we actually empower these groups, we empower these people. We take their lessons and we reapply them throughout the rest of this country.

Speaker Ryan emphasized the power of local institutions, including churches, governments, and community organizations to tackle the issue of poverty in a way that is able to address the individual.

And the only way you can do that is not micromanage in Washington; is to actually customize benefits Lets break up the welfare monopoly, instead of having just the welfare agency at the county level give people their benefits They dont actually treat the person. Let other providers also provide these full-scale wraparound benefits. Let the Catholic Church do it. Let Lutheran social services. Let America Works, a for-profit agency thats good at this.

Ryan continually emphasizes partnership with local communities and the leaders of those communities. He wants to use this same partnership strategy to help address poor relationships between law enforcement and members of impoverished and minority communities. He tells a story about a successful church-facilitated partnership between community members and the local law enforcement agency.

I was talking to my friend Buster Suarez, who is a black pastor in Somerset, N.J., [at the] First Baptist Church there. Buster and the other black leaders in Somerset, a low-income community, worked with local law enforcement to set up a group that has instantaneous communications whenever something wrong occurs. And theyve basically fused and merged the minority community with the police department in a very effective way and they have a community policing system that works really, really well.

In his focus on community solutions to the pressing issues of poverty and crime, Ryan addresses the importance of subsidiarity and humility in government. Using federal support to enhance, not destroy, local initiatives would be a positive step in the direction towards a more just and peaceful country.

Laura Benanti Unveils Epic Melania Trump Impression

Show People With Paul Wontorek Interview: Tony Winner Laura Benanti

Fresh off her run in Broadway"s She Loves Me, Tony Award winner Laura Benanti appeared on the July 19 episode of CBS"s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert unveiling her impression of Melania Trump, wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

23-YEAR-OLD DONALD TRUMPS BROADWAY VENTUREAND HIS PLAYBILL BIO

The impression came as part of the comedy show"s spoof of Mrs. Trump"s July 18 speech at the Republican National Convention, which some have noticed bore a close resemblance to current First Lady Michelle Obama"s speech at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

On that premise, Benanti took it from there:
