As Pick for No. 2, Tim Kaine Sees Gifts Come Under Scrutiny

WASHINGTON Barr Pharmaceuticals gave Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia a ride on a private jet to a meeting in Aspen, Colo., at a time in 2006 when it was lobbying him over issues related to its drug sales, state records show.

Dominion Resources, Virginias largest electric utility and a lobbying force in the states capital, Richmond, picked up the tab for a trip that Mr. Kaine took that same year to the college basketball Final Four tournament (and a funeral) in Indianapolis, according to the records.

McCandlish Holton PC, a law and lobbying firm that represented Virginias small vineyards and worked closely with Mr. Kaines office to create a new system for distributing wine produced by the vineyards, presented Mr. Kaine with four cases of wine in 2007, the records show, the same year he signed the legislation into law.

Under Virginias lax ethics rules at the time, the gifts, which had a total value of more than $160,000, were all legal as long as they were disclosed.

But with Mr. Kaines selection on Friday as Hillary Clintons vice-presidential running mate, the gifts he received in the four years he served as Virginias chief executive and his time as lieutenant governor before that are certain to be cited by his Republican critics as a sign that Mr. Kaine, who is now a United States senator, is not as squeaky clean as he portrays himself.

It would be nave to think a pharmaceutical company like Teva was not interested in maintaining access to the governor as a result of a gift of that size, said Andrew P. Miller, a former Democratic attorney general in Virginia, who now works as an energy industry lawyer and lobbyist, referring to Teva Pharmaceuticals, which bought Barr in 2008.

Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, wasted little time in starting to attack Mr. Kaine, branding him on Friday night as corrupt Kaine.

Mr. Kaines acceptance of gifts has been reported on at times, dating back to when he was in the governors office. But an examination by The New York Times of archival email traffic from Mr. Kaines tenure as governor shows that he received gifts, in some cases, around the same time he and his staff were considering official government requests from these donors.

In Barrs case, the email records show that executives from the company asked Mr. Kaine to intervene with the Food and Drug Administration on its behalf in August 2006, just days before the flight to Aspen for a meeting of the Democratic Governors Association, later valued at $12,000 in Mr. Kaines disclosure report.

Mr. Kaine signed the letter to the F.D.A. a draft of which had been written by Barr as requested before leaving on the trip, and a company lobbyist suggested that he was prepared to follow up during the plane ride.

The Gov will be on a plane on Friday with Phil Smith, Eileen Filler-Corn, an aide to the governor, wrote in an August 2006 email, after she had met with Mr. Smith, then a lobbyist from Barr. Phil will likely speak with to Gov about him sending a letter in support of the petition in Aspen this weekend, hence this email to yall.

State records compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project show that a total of 139 companies or individuals gave about 220 gifts or reimbursements for travel to Mr. Kaine to work-related conferences while he served as governor from 2006 to 2010 and lieutenant governor from 2002 to 2006. Amy Dudley, a spokeswoman for Mr. Kaine, said that two-thirds of the filings were in the work-related travel category, and that Mr. Kaine was careful to disclose any gift, even if it was from a family friend, which is not required under the law.

She rejected any suggestion that Mr. Kaine may have done anything to benefit any individual or company that had given him a gift, including Teva, which sells generic drugs and has a large manufacturing plant in Forest, Va.

Many governors at the time believed, as then-Governor Kaine did, that more widespread use of generic drugs would reduce state and federal health care costs without compromising the quality of care, Ms. Dudley said.

The issue of gifts to elected officials has become particularly delicate in Virginia in the aftermath of the criminal case against Mr. Kaines successor, Bob McDonnell, which was filed in 2014, even though his conviction was vacated late last month by the United States Supreme Court. Mr. McDonnell took much more extravagant gifts including a Rolex watch and catering for his daughters wedding and other gifts and loans worth $177,000 from a single businessman who was seeking help with a state government-related matter, and Mr. McDonnell did not disclose all of those gifts.

Until the Virginia General Assembly moved last year to tighten state ethics laws prohibiting any single lobbyist, in most circumstances, from giving an elected official more than $100 in gifts each year it was common practice for state lawmakers to accept gifts, at times worth more than $10,000.

The largest proportion of the gifts that Mr. Kaine received was for political and campaign-related travel, including the $45,075 it cost for him to campaign around the country in 2008 for Barack Obama.

Other major gifts came from personal friends, including a weeklong stay, worth $18,000, in 2005 shortly after Mr. Kaine was elected governor on the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique, provided by James B. Murray Jr., a Virginia-based venture capitalist specializing in telecommunications investments, who also donated $45,000 to Mr. Kaines election campaign and to a political action committee affiliated with Mr. Kaine. Mr. Murray owned an oceanside estate named Les Jolies Eaux which boasts five bedrooms, two pools and, at least nowadays, a chef, butler, housekeeper, maid and gardener, according to a rental listing that was designed for Princess Margaret, countess of Snowdon, the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Mr. Kaine, state records show, was meticulous at filing his gift disclosures, and even listed a set of cuff links worth $75 that he was given in 2006 by officials from Kent County, England, to help commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Va., the first permanent English-speaking settlement in America. Other small gifts came from President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan (a 3-foot-by-5-foot prayer rug worth $345) and a signed baseball (worth $500) from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

Crawford vs. Postol results: Crawford unifies titles with unanimous decision

Terence CrawFord vs Viktor Postol Face off

Terence Crawford improved to 29-0 (20 KOs) with a dominant performance over Viktor Postol 28-1 (12 KOs) to unify the WBC and WBO junior welterweight titles and make an emphatic statement about who the best 140-pound fighter in the world.

Crawford started slow, as is the norm for the star from Omaha, Nebraska, feeling out Postol"s length and figuring out how to attack the taller fighter. In the fourth round, he started to open things up, letting his hands go, and then in the fifth round, the fight turned totally in his favor as he knocked Postol down twice to take a commanding lead on the cards.

The dominance shown by Crawford over Postol, who is the consensus pick as the second-best fighter at 140 pounds, was mightily impressive as he completely dismantled the Ukranian star. Postol, normally a high-output puncher, threw only 244 punches in the fight and landed just 83 of those. Crawford landed 141 of 388 punches in the fight, but it was the ease with which he landed his power punches -- 107 of 216 found their target from Crawford -- that separated him. The jab was only a range finder in this fight for Crawford, waiting for Postol to step into his power shots.

Crawford"s best punch of the fight was with his left hand, as he spent the entirety of the fight in the southpaw stance, neutralizing the Postol jab and creating space for his left hand to shoot through.

The dominant performance by Crawford leaves only one question: Who"s next? It"s hard to look at anyone currently in the 140-pound division that could give him problems, but the name on everyone"s mind right now is Manny Pacquiao. The superstar welterweight is in need of an opponent for Nov. 5 in his return bout after a brief retirement.

Both guys are under Bob Arum"s Top Rank umbrella, so the promotional side would be easy to negotiate, but it"s a matter of whether Pacquiao wants to make a return to 140 pounds for the first time since 2009 and whether Top Rank wants to put their best pound-for-pound guys in the ring, with the chance of their best young star losing right when he"s hot on the market.

We"ll find out soon enough as a Pacquiao opponent is expected to be announced in the next two weeks, but whoever Crawford faces next, Pacquiao or not, is in for an extremely tough challenge.

Warner Bros debuts footage from Justice League, Wonder Woman, Fantastic Beasts, Kong and more!

INJUSTICE 2 - Wonder Woman Trailer Officiel (2017)

The Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel on Saturday morning in San Diego ended up being chock full of footage from upcoming films! Instead of trying to cover all of the information that was disseminated on the panels (some had more to share than others), the internet people who are not in San Diego were blessed with a wealth of material to gawk at from Wonder Woman, Justice League, Suicide Squad, Kong: Skull Island and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The DC Cinematic Universe is expanding with Suicide Squad in mere weeks and Wonder Woman flying an invisible jet into theaters next year, so its unsurprising those properties kicked off the panel.Moderator Conan OBrien brought out all the DC Cinematic Universe film directors (that we know about) to line-up on the stage Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Ben Affleck, David Ayer, Rick Famuyiwa, and James Wan before booting all of them but the lady.

Patty Jenkins took over the stage and brought out the cast of Wonder Woman, including Gal Godot (Diana) and Chris Pine. The big news, of course, was the unveiling of a full Wonder Woman trailer that shows off more of the setting and the action of the film.

Not a lot of plot on display, but considering the movie doesnt open until June 2017, theres plenty of time to push Wonder Woman as her own story. It was important to start the DC Comics part of the panel off with the message of course correction from the dark, underwhelming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Course correction continued with new material from Zack Snyders Justice League, which is currently in production. The Justice League part of the panel withAffleck, Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Henry Cavill, andRay Fisher kicked off by unveiling a high resolution image of the whole Justice League in costume for the first time.

Surprising everyone, Zack Snyder has also prepared footage from the movie and cut it into a San Diego Comic-Con teaser. Prominently featured are Jason Momoas Aquaman and Ezra Millers Flash.

Wrapping up the live-action superhero part of the panel was the Suicide Squad cast, including the big stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie. Since their film opens on August 5th, there wasnt a lot of new information given out, well just have to wait for the movie. Although Will Smith did have an entertaining anecdote about how Jared Leto behaved on set.

It wouldnt be a DC Comics domination push if they didnt also release a video for Comic-Con, especially when the Suicide Squad footage from last year caused such a piracy kerfuffle. If Wonder Woman and Justice League had clips, Suicide Squad was going to make one too.

The Lego Batman Movie had a presence with Will Arnett, who voices the character on hand. Lego Batman comes out February 10th next year.

The most unexpectedly awesome footage came from Legendary and Warner Bros.sKong: Skull Island, the King Kong prequel by the producers of Gareth Edwards American Godzilla that will eventually lead to a cross-over movie where Godzilla and King Kong fight (in a few years, if the movie doesnt flop).

Dude. That Kong is huge. Certainly the largest version of Kong to ever be made in America (Im fuzzy on how big Kong is in Godzilla Vs. King Kong compared to here, but Im sure there will be many a think piece about it)

Check out this Vietnam War-esque shot. Ape-pocalypse Now.

Director Guy Richie is going to do to the legend of King Arthur what he did to Sherlock Holmes, which is try to make him cool in a modern blockbuster context. Thats going to happen with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword starring Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) as the title character.

Then, Eddie Redmayne appeared in the audience and began to hand out wands. Yes, it was time for new things from the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling, as the first movie in a planned trilogy this November 18th Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. After some very cagey answers to Conans questions, Fantastic Beasts debuted its first full trailer!

Wow! Actual fantastic beasts! This is like magic Pokmon Go!

Ex-KKK leader David Duke says he plans to run for US Senate

The David Duke Show 7/19/16

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke registers his candidacy for the November 8 ballot as a Republican at the Louisiana Secretary of State"s office in Baton Rouge, La., Friday, July 22, 2016. Duke"s candidacy comes as the state is grappling with deep racial tensions after the shooting death of a black man by white police officers and the killing of three law enforcement officers by a black man. (AP Photo/Max Becherer) syndication.ap.org

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Declaring "the climate of this country has moved in my direction," white supremacist David Duke registered Friday for Louisiana"s U.S. Senate race, saying he was partially spurred by the recent shooting deaths of three law enforcement officers by a black man.

"I believe my time has come," the former Ku Klux Klan leader said after submitting his paperwork for the ballot. He added: "The people of this country, the patriotic, decent, G*d-fearing people of this country are now right with me."

Duke"s candidacy comes one day after Donald Trump accepted the GOP nomination for president, and Duke said he"s espoused principles for years that are similar to the themes Republicans are now supporting in Trump"s campaign, on issues such as immigration and trade.

He said Americans are "embracing the core issues I have fought for my entire life."

Duke, 66, is registered with the GOP, but Republicans at the state and federal level quickly denounced his Senate bid.

Roger Villere, chairman of the Republican Party of Louisiana, said in a statement the party "will play an active role in opposing" him, calling Duke a "hate-filled fraud who does not embody the values of the Republican Party." Ward Baker, with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Duke will not have the support of his organization "under any circumstance."

Trump faced criticism from some GOP leaders for failing during the primary season to immediately denounce the tacit endorsement of Duke, who once told his radio show audience that a vote for any other candidate "is really treason to your heritage." Trump eventually did disavow Duke. Trump"s campaign didn"t release any statement on Duke Friday.

The launch of Duke"s campaign comes as Louisiana is grappling with deep racial tensions after the shooting death of a black man by white police officers and the killing of three law enforcement officers. Duke said he was "shattered" by the slayings of police.

In a lengthy speech, Duke talked of the "massive racial discrimination going on right now against European Americans," and what he called a biased media working against him. He called the Black Lives Matter movement a "terrorist organization" and said he wanted equal rights for everyone.

"You don"t come together by a narrative in the controlled media that white people are evil and black people are faultless. You come together on the idea that every people in this country have a right to respect, every people have a right to fairness," he said.

Duke is among two dozen candidates on the Nov. 8 ballot seeking the open Senate seat. Republican David Vitter is not running for re-election. Republican and Democrat opponents sought to distance themselves from Duke"s campaign, with many offering critical statements of his candidacy.

In Metairie, a predominantly white and Republican stronghold in the New Orleans area where Duke once was elected to the state House of Representatives, voters expressed mixed feelings about Duke"s interest in returning into politics.

Maria Fox, a 68-year-old housewife who came to the United States from Nicaragua, was pleased that Duke is running.

"Many, many years ago he woke up the consciousness of this country and this state just like Trump is doing to the country," she said.

Chuck Diesel, a 46-year-old Republican and bass player, shook his head at the news that Duke was running, calling him a "n**i." But he gave Duke no chance of winning.

"Every time he"s tipped his toe back in, it"s zero chance," he said.

Duke reacted angrily to a question about whether he remained involved with the KKK. He said he was active with the organization for four years in the mid-1970s. He described it "four decades ago in a nonviolent group."

Duke"s last tenure in elected office was more than two decades ago, in the state legislature. He"s run unsuccessfully for Congress. His failed bid for governor in the 1991 race against former Gov. Edwin Edwards who was later convicted of corruption was one of Louisiana"s most high-profile elections, with Duke opponents proudly showing bumper stickers supporting Edwards that read "Vote for the crook. It"s important."

Edwards said Duke would have a "hard row to hoe" in the upcoming election but there might be a "niche" for him.

"There"s a great deal of racial unrest in the country, and he may capitalize on it," Edwards said.

Duke also starts with name recognition that other candidates don"t have, Edwards said.

Raymond Jetson, an African-American pastor in Baton Rouge who was a state lawmaker during Duke"s tenure, said Duke can potentially thrive with the national political scene currently so divided.

"You have a climate that ... highlights and stresses the divisions within us, a climate that in so many ways has a strong racial overtone and challenge to it," Jetson said.

A convicted felon, Duke pleaded guilty in 2002 to bilking his supporters and cheating on his taxes. He spent a year in federal prison, but later denied any wrongdoing.
