A Nike curse is hitting professional golfers - and it"s creating a perfect opportunity for Under Armour

Nike"s golfers are hitting a dry spell and the athletic apparel brand needs a win.

While it"s no curse of the Bambino, a Nike golfer hasn"t won a major golf tournament in the prior eight championships, ESPN Sports business reporter Darren Rovell noted on Twitter on Monday.

That makes this the longest drought for Nike"s golf roster since 2004.

Nike built its modern golf business on Tiger Wood"s success, signing the young superstar in 1996, when he was just 20. Wood"s Nike shirts became iconic, eventually spawning Nike"s Tiger Woods apparel collection.

With Woods, Nike had made its name synonymous with golf superstardom. Now, the brand is struggling to find a new savior and avoid becoming seen as a golf course curse.

Tiger Woods fall from grace began with a s*x scandal in 2009. While his comeback has been eagerly awaited in the last seven years, it has never come to fruition.

Throughout all of his struggles, Woods has stayed faithful to Nike, tweeting his support of the company in May.

With Woods unable to put Nike on the leaderboard, the sports apparel company has looked elsewhere for big names for its golf business.

Rory McIlroy seemed like the brand"s savior, with Bloomberg writing an article headlined "Rory McIlroy Helps Nike Keep Golf Alive After Tiger" in August 2014. McIlroy had recently become one of three golfers to win three majors by age 25, when he won the 2014 Open Championship in July.

"Rorys performance this summer has been electrifying," Nike golf president Cindy Davis wrote Bloomberg in an email at the time. "Nike Golf has a strong stable of global athletes including two extraordinary talents in Tiger and Rory. They are the two dominant players in golf who create the most energy around our sport."

Now, however, world no. 4McIlroy is struggling himself.

"What has gone wrong with Rory McIlroy and what does he need?" Philip Reid asked in The Irish Times, after the golfer missed the halfway cut at the US PGA Championship in July.

Nike has attempted to build out its golfer roster, announcing that 14 new golfers signed to the brand in January, including Brooks Koepka who tied for 4th in the PGA Championship despite an ankle injury. However, in July, Charl Schwartzel who had beenwith Nike since 2008 made the switch to PXG, a golf equipment company founded by GoDaddy founder Bob Parson in 2014.

Ultimately, Nike"s currentroster of golfershasn"t been ableto get a win in two years and the apparel company needs a win.

World no. 3 golfer Jordan Spieth adds legitimacy to Under Armour"s golf business. Christian Petersen/Getty Images

As Under Armour is increasingly competing for Nike"s customers, the company is moving into the golf business. The rising sports apparel and footwear company introduced itsfirst line of golf shoes in March, part of a more subtle and nuanced strategy for entering the golf business than Nike"s flashy, superstar-centric approach.

"The golf consumer can smell a rat," Ryan Kuehl, Under Armour"s vice president for sports marketing and sponsorships, told Business Insider in March. "We"ve got to talk like a golf brand. We"ve got to act like a golf brand. We"ve got to behave like a golf brand. And we have to build products like a golf brand for us to compete."

Nike can get potentially draw notoriously loyal golf consumers away from established golf brands, if the company can produce the results. However, with the current lack of champions, the shortcomings of Nike"sstrategy of relying on a handful of superstars is becoming apparent.

Right now, it"s looking like Nike"s golf business needs to breaka curse andnot just when it comes to winning championships.

Michelle Pugh is not taking Kelly Osbourne"s comments lightly.

The 45-year-old hairstylist -- whose affair with Ozzy Osbourne rocked the singer"s relationship with his wife of 33 years, Sharon Osbourne, earlier this year -- has filed a lawsuit against the couple"s daughter after tweets she sent in May includedPugh"s phone number and suggested the relationship with Ozzy, 67, amounted to "elder abuse."

According to court documents obtained by ET, Pugh is alleging Kelly"s comments were defamatory, and that she has been "s**t-shamed, bullied and harassed" by the Black Sabbath singer"s daughter, adding the claim that Kelly "harnessed her celebrity and notoriety to incite her followers as well as the media machine."

The news comes after Ozzy revealed a years-long struggle with s*x addiction.

A hole has opened under a railway line causing major travel disruption for a second time in just weeks.

Lines running into London Bridge station were shut "as a safety measure" and services cancelled, following the discovery of the 50cm-wide hole at Forest Hill in the south-east London.

It comes after 13ft-deep hole opened in the same area on 18 July, also forcing lines into London Bridge to be shut.

Rail operator Southern warned of disruption until 18:00 BST.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "Our engineers have been monitoring the site of the previous hole under the railway at Forest Hill since that incident occurred in mid-July.

"We spotted a small hole at 3am today and closed the two lines above it to trains.

"This new hole is about just over half a metre deep and we are working to open it out to investigate the scale of repairs we need to make today.

"Our aim is to get the railway open to trains today, however we won"t know for certain until we have completed our investigations."

Southern Services running towards London Bridge are unable to stop at Norwood Junction, Anerley, Penge West, Sydenham, Forest Hill, Honor Oak Park, Brockley, and New Cross Gate. London Overground services were also affected between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace/West Croydon.

Thameslink trains from Brighton into London were only able to run as far as Gatwick Airport.

Jay Cutler takes high road in reviewing Martellus Bennett"s digs

Sounds of the Game: Martellus Bennett

The Bears are a week away from their exhibition opener and trying to squeeze the most out of their remaining stay at training camp. On a somewhat eventful Wednesday at Olivet Nazarene University, here"s what we learned.

1. Martellus Bennett is still talking about Jay Cutler. Brandon Marshall is too.

Cutler"s reaction? Just plain amused.

Here"s the background: Bennett"s verbal swipes at Cutler came within a lengthy ESPN Magazine profile published this week in which the loquacious tight end and his equally opinionated brother, Michael, were asked to riff about several players and hot-button topics around the NFL. When the discussion shifted to Cutler, Michael Bennett, a defensive end for the Seahawks, called the longtime Bear the "worst quarterback in the NFL."

Martellus Bennett, who played with Cutler for three seasons before being traded to the Patriots in March, piled on: "I"d be open and he"d throw into double coverage," he said.

Marshall, whose fractured relationship with Cutler is beyond repair after his tempestuous 2014 season, spent part of his Tuesday visit on ESPN"s "First Take" offering optimism about his former quarterback. Said Marshall, entering his second season with the Jets: "I truly believe if Alshon Jeffery stays healthy and then you have Kevin White if this rookie can come in and catch 55-plus b***s, Jay Cutler can be an MVP this year."

Cutler was asked about the thoughts of both former teammates and simply laughed.

"Most receivers and tight ends (think they) are always open," Cutler said of Bennett"s claims. "Hopefully Tom (Brady) can do a better job of finding him than I did."

And what of Marshall again offering high praise rather than sharp criticism of Cutler?

"You can"t please everybody. We"re at both ends of the spectrum here," Cutler quipped. "We wish both those guys good luck. I had fun playing with them here, and that"s just kind of how it goes."

Asked later why his name keeps coming up with former teammates, Cutler knew better than to continue any easily sensationalized jibber-jabber.

"I could say something clever and smart," Cutler said, "but I"ll just pass."

Long story short: The Bears pushed to trade Bennett and Marshall to minimize melodrama. Given both players" track records with the Bears and their talkative personalities, their comments this week need to be kept in proper perspective: exaggerated opinions at best, hollow gibberish at worst.

Cutler"s taking the right approach and won"t lose sleep knowing both players are no longer his concern.

2. Kyle Long"s return to practice Wednesday came with plenty of eagerness.

Long was limited, but after missing four full practices with a calf strain he was simply glad to be back in the mix.

He suffered the injury during the first practice last week. Per his recap, he was "trying to chase Danny Trevathan for the dozenth time at a practice" when the injury occurred.

Long hates missing practice time and, by his own admission, still hasn"t figured out how to harness his restlessness when injured.

"It gets boring," he said. "I"m here to play football, and when I"m not playing football, I feel like I"m doing something wrong and feel kind of guilty about it."

The Bears appreciate Long"s drive but have made clear they intend to be cautious as they blend him back in. Coach John Fox said he"s keeping the Sept. 11 opener against the Texans in focus regarding Long rather than being concerned about the right guard"s availability for next week"s exhibition against the Broncos.

3. The roster churn continues.

The Bears signed cornerback Joel Ross and are expected to sign veteran fullback Darrel Young as they continue to shape the bottom of the roster during the camp grind.

Recently signed cornerback Brandon Boykin was placed on injured reserve; he tweeted Wednesday night that he had been playing with a torn pectoral muscle for five days without realizing it. The other corresponding roster move is not known.

DirecTV Dispute Q&A

NICHOLAS YOUNG @ RHYTHM IN MOTION 9 APRIL 2014

WTVA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for DirecTV Subscribers

What is happening to WTVA on DirecTV?

WTVAs parent company, Heartland Media, and DirecTV are in the process of negotiating a renewal of the current retransmission agreement between WTVA and DirecTV. This agreement is scheduled to expire on August 10, 2016. Without a renewal, DirecTV will no longer carry WTVAs programming and content. Over the past several months, WTVAs owners have attempted to reach a new long-term agreement with DirecTV in the hopes of preventing any interruption of service for viewers. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to move forward with DirecTV, little progress has been made.

Why can"t you reach an agreement?

For some reason, DirecTV has not been willing to negotiate appropriate market value retransmission compensation that other distributors are paying for WTVAs content. Primarily, Heartland Media and DirecTV disagree on the value of WTVAs programming and content. DirecTV resells this same content to you, the subscriber, yet refuses to compensate at a fair market value the highly rated and award-winning programming that WTVA produces every day for its viewers.

Why should DirecTV have to pay to carry television stations that are available for free over-the-air?

WTVA is available over-the-air for free to our viewers, but our signal is not free to pay services such as DirecTV that repackage our signals and sell them to their subscribers. In fact, the law requires cable and satellite providers to obtain consent for the right to carry broadcast stations and to compensate them in exchange for granting their consent.

Don"t television stations benefit from being available on satellite providers?

All channels benefit from being carried on a cable or satellite system. Cable and satellite systems like DirecTV generally pay for the right to carry stations and networks. We are simply asking to be treated fairly in being compensated. The right to request payment is something that the U.S. Congress has explicitly authorized.

Is there anything I can do to keep WTVA on DirecTV?

The best thing you can do is to let DirecTV know that they need to keep local channels like WTVA on their system to retain you as a customer. You have alternatives and you should let them know that you will use them if they don"t provide the same level of programming as their competition.

If this can"t be resolved and the stations aren"t carried on DirecTV, how can I watch WTVA?

Although we understand and apologize for the inconvenience caused by this to our viewers, you still have several ways to watch WTVA. WTVA is available free over-the-air by antenna on channel 9.1 and 9.2, and on Comcast Cable (800)-934-6489, Charter Cable (888) 438-2427, DISH Network (800) 333-3474, MaxxSouth Broadband (800) 457-5351and the smaller cable companies of your area. Most people have the option to use an antenna to receive WTVA over-the-air for free. Alternatively you can cancel your DirecTV service and choose to go with one of DirecTVs cable or satellite competitors.

How much money is involved?

The negotiations are still taking place, but what we can tell you is that the fees were requesting are a very small percentage of the average bill paid by DirecTVs subscribers. Heartland Media is requesting to be paid far lower fees than what DirecTV currently pays for other lower rated programming.

If the increase is that small why isnt DirecTV agreeing to pay it?

That"s a great question, but you would have to ask DirecTV. In fact, we suggest you get in touch with them to ask them just that. Who wouldn"t agree to a nominal fee per day for your whole family to receive some of the most popular, widely watched programming on television? You can call DirecTV customer support at 1-800-DIRECTV (800-347-3288).
