McKayla Maroney Talks About Michael Phelps Face

McKayla Maroney Vaults (August 15, 2013)

Amid all the triumph of the Olympics, all the joys and wonders forged in the sandy fires of Rio, there is, of course, a sense of loss. Dreams quickly rot into disappointment. Favorites fall, nations stumble. And, of course, torches are passedhow fitting for the Olympicsfrom one generation to the next. (These torches are not always passed willingly, of course. Sometimes they must be yanked out of muscled hands.) Just such an event happened last night. Thoughand this is rarethis was an inter-sport transfer. From gymnastics to swimming. From one gold medalist to another.

Travel with me, if you will, back to late early August of 2012. President Obama was involved in a bitter presidential race with handsome horseman Mitt Romney. The Dark Knight Rises was No. 1 at the box office, while Step Up Revolution performed decently in sixth place. We were all four years youngermaybe we had more hair, maybe the baby hadnt been born yet, the dog was still alive, we lived in Seattle then. Lives were different, is what Im saying. So different, in fact, that the Olympics were not being held in Rio de Janeiro at all. No, they were in London. The Foggy Bottom! Or whatever London is called.

The point is, the London Olympics were happening and the American womens-gymnastics team won gold in the team event. Then, they competed in the individual events, also performing well. A young American gymnast, all of 16 years old then, named McKayla Maroney won silver in the vault event, which she was favored to win. Her somewhat peeved reaction during the medal ceremony, an endearing and slightly wicked little sideways frown, became a viral sensation: McKayla Maroney Is Not Impressed. This wasnt just a viral sensation, though. It was the viral sensation of the 2012 Olympic games.

The planet has twirled swiftly around the sun four times since then. The baby came, the dog went, we moved to St. Louis. Life happened. And yet still, McKaylas not impressed face remained the official meme of the Olympics. Because nothing had come along to replace it. Until last night, August 8.

In the lead-up to a swimming semi-final race, gold-plated American swimmer Michael Phelpsan athlete so decorated that when the medals have their own Olympics, they win Michael Phelpseswas trying to get his head into the swim zone while rival swimmer, South African speedboat Chad le Clos, preened and stretched right in front of him. Phelps, hood up and face twisted into an angry knot, was psyching himself up for the race so intensely that an NBC camera couldnt help but linger on his scowl, while commentators Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gainesstars of the Olympics greatest love storyriffed about Phelpss funny face. It was a lighthearted, fun moment, and Twitter went nuts for it. A meme bloomed into being, unstoppable and instantly ubiquitous.

And thus, like some powerful spell being broken, McKayla Maroney was free. She is no longer meme queen of the Olympics. The torch, as all torches must someday be, has been passed. And that is, in a way, a kind of loss. Though, Maroney seems relieved. TMZ did a little FaceTime interview with Maroney, now 20, today, and she told them, I looked at his pictures and was like, YES! Go, Michael, take it away, please! So shes glad for it. I suppose we cant blame her.

Now the great Olympic wheel turns on. Were only four days into these Rio games, meaning a whole new meme could pop up and unsettle Mr. Phelpss short time on the throne. (Hes not very used to that happening.) Maybe gymnast Laurie Hernandez will make some silly face, or swimmer Ryan Lochte will moon the pool or something. Who knows! Anything could happen, which is the tense magic of these games. But right now, Michael Phelps is Olympic-meme champion. McKayla Maroneys name will forever hang from the rafters, but she is no longer number one in the world. That era has ended. Phelps reigns, and Maroney starts out on a music career. All part of the churn and drama of this great and epic dance we call sport.

Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam exiting "Saturday Night Live"

Worst I Ever Bombed: Taran Killam (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)

Longtime "Saturday Night Live" cast member Taran Killam says he "was never given a reason why" he was being let go after six seasons on the NBC program.

Killam and fellow cast member Jay Pharoah won"t be back when "SNL" returns this fall for its 42nd season, the network said Monday.

Killam told Uproxx in an interview published Monday that he was planning on making the upcoming season of "SNL" his final one before being told that his contract wasn"t being picked up.

"I was never given a reason why, really. I can assume until the cows come home," he said.

Killam speculated that the production schedule of a film he"s directing and starring in, "Why We"re Killing Gunther," may have played a part because two months of post-production work on the movie would have coincided with "SNL"s" production schedule. Whatever the reason for his departure, Killam said he has "no gripes" about his time as part of the comedy institution.

"I set out to be on "SNL" and I got to do that and I did very well. And I love and adore and will forever have close ties and tight bonds with the brilliant, smartest, funniest people I"ve ever met in my life," he told Uproxx.

Killam performed several celebrity impressions on the show, including Brad Pitt and Donald Trump although the Trump role went to "SNL" announcer and former star Darrell Hammond during the past season.

Pharoah was also on the program for six seasons and had the coveted role of impersonating President Barack Obama. He was also known for his send-ups of Kanye West, Jay Z, Shaquille O"Neal and others.

"SNL" is famous for its revolving-door cast, with Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon and Eddie Murphy among its successful alumni.

Great news: Rod Blagojevich may be getting out of jail early

Rod Blagojevich Cries as Daughters Take Stand

posted at 2:31 pm on August 9, 2016 by Jazz Shaw

This seems to be a day for names to pop up in the news that are blasts from the past. First it was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and now its Rod Blagojevich. The two dont have much in common other than a propensity to leave cable news anchors tongue tied when trying to pronounce their names and the ability to produce groan inducing headlines, but we may soon be hearing more from the former Illinois governor. Hes been cooling his heels in the Crowbar Motel ever since his conviction on charges of trying to sell Barack Obamas old Senate seat to the highest bidder, but if his attorneys get their way Rod could soon be a free man. (AT&T News)

A federal judge will decide Tuesday whether to cut ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevichs 14-year prison sentence on more than a dozen convictions upheld by an appellate court, including that he sought to exchange an appointment to President Barack Obamas old U.S. Senate seat in exchange for campaign cash.

Blagojevich, known as Inmate No. 40892-424 since he went to prison in 2012, won a resentencing hearing after an appeals court struck down five of his 18 convictions. The Democrat is scheduled to appear on a courtroom screen through a video from a Colorado prison, which will mark his first public appearance since entering prison.

Famously fastidious about his dark hair as governor, it has turned all white in prison, where his hair dyes are banned.

To be clear, Blagos victory in court didnt clear him of all charges. Five of the more serious ones were dismissed, but he still had a stack of other crimes which remain on the books. Perhaps that justifies reducing his sentence somewhat but Im not sure that dropping it from 14 years to four is fully justified. Even with time off for good behavior he wasnt expected to be released until 2024.

In a rather selfish way, though, I think that at least the bloggers of the world might enjoy having Blagojevich back out on the town, if only for the possibility of the headlines he could generate. Lets not forget the wonderful years of entertaining coverage that Blago provided us. Remember that it took the government two tries to convict him on all counts. The first time around the jury deadlocked eleven to one. While we waited for the retrial to drag out, Rod never kept a low profile. He showed up on The Daily Show multiple times, becoming something of a comedy folk hero in the mold of Rob Ford in Canada. Even when he gave press conferences from the steps of his home he would say the most unexpected and entertaining things, such as threatening to call in Rahm Emanuel, Harry Reid and Barack Obama as witnesses in his trial.

Ah good times, my friends. How can you not miss Rod and his antics? Perhaps the court should cut him some slack and turn him loose after all. G*d only knows we could use a little humor to lighten things up in the midst of this election.

Kathleen Baker and Ryan Murphy Follow Their Own Paths to Olympic Medals

US Olympic Team Trials - Swimming: #Lane9 Night 7: Kathleen Baker and Jessica Hardy Interview

Photo Courtesy: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

Editorial Coverage Sponsored By FINIS

By David Rieder.

When the womens and mens 100 backstroke finals went off at the Olympic Aquatic Center late Monday night, the competitors representing United States had some lengthy history to live up tothey had won five straight Olympic golds in the mens race and three on the womens side.

Only one year ago, U.S. backstroke was on life support.

At the World Championships in Kazan, Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers both entered as the reigning World and Olympic champions in the event, but Grevers had to settle for a bronze medal behind breakout Australian Mitch Larkin and Frances Camille Lacourt. On the womens side, Franklin had to settle for fifth, more than a second behind gold medalist Emily Seebohm.

Looking back now, its much easier to see the potential for the duo that ended up coming through for the Americans in Rio. On the womens side, there was Kathleen Baker, who broke 1:00 for only the second time in her career to make her first World Championship final. Baker ended up getting eighth in that race.

For the men, the future was Ryan Murphy, who had already won consecutive NCAA titles in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, and when it came time for the mixed 400 medley relay, the coaching staff opted to put in Murphy over Grevers or David Plummer, who had missed the 100 back final.

Murphy promptly popped off a 52.18 leadoff split, faster than Larkins winning time earlier in the meet in the 100 backeven if it would not count as an official time since it came on a mixed relay.

Murphy struggled to regain that form for the rest of the meet, but the potential was there he returned to Cal for his junior season. Murphy met with Cal head coach Dave Durden to figure out how he was going to prove that one relay leadoff was not a flash in the pan and to find the consistent excellence that could win an Olympic gold medal.

Both he and I got to a good point after that summer of coming up with a very detailed process for him to follow, Durden said. Theres a lot of comfort for him grinding through this process.

Murphy proceeded to roll through the collegiate seasonsmashing American record in both backstroke races at the NCAA championships despite an insistence that long course had been the focus all yearand then Olympic Trials, where he captured wins in both distances.

Murphy took the highs and the lows of his experiences in Kazan and used them to propel himself to the next level. For Baker, the process was not nearly so linear.

After Worlds, Baker moved cross-country to begin her college career, joining Murphy at Cal. But this Cal Bear did not get off to as rousing a start in her NCAA debutshe finished second in the 200 IM at the championships in Atlanta in March, but she missed the championship finals in her signature backstroke events.

Baker returned home to train with SwimMAC coach David Marsh in the lead-up to Olympic Trials. Marsh realized that Baker, dealing with Crohns Disease that she would make public in July, needed more recoveryhe built more rest into her practice scheduleand greater specialization.

Marsh convinced Baker to put all her eggs in one basketthe 100 back. At Trials, she would not even compete in the 200 IM or 200 backthe event in which she first qualified for a senior national team in 2014.

Baker broke out of her slump in prompt fashion with when she posted a lifetime-best time of 59.39 to qualify second for the final at Olympic Trials behind Olivia Smoliga. And then, in a heat with Franklin and Natalie Coughlinwho had combined for those three previous U.S. titlesswimming in the outside lanes, the two newcomers delivered.

Smoliga won in 59.02, ahead of Bakers 59.29, and the world quickly realized that the duo would be among the most energetic of the entire American delegation headed to Rio.

Things werent perfect for Baker at training campMarsh admitted that she had some setbacks with injury and illness during the month the U.S. team trained togetherbut everything came together in Rio, when Baker led the way through both prelims and semifinals with identical times of 58.87.

In the final, Baker finished three tenths behind gold medalist Katinka Hosszu, but a silver was more than satisfying for someone who came into the meet with few expectations of winning an individual medal.

And after the battle with Crohns and the struggles in her first year of college, the moment was even sweeter.

Knowing something could be taken away from you definitely makes you appreciate it more, Baker said. Im loving every single minute of this, having the meet of my life at a perfect time.

Just two races later, Baker realized she would get to share one of the greatest moments of her life with one teammate she considers a role model and a sister when Katie Meili won bronze in the womens 100 breast.

Its really nice to see that whole journey weve been on the past three years come together tonight, Meili said. Shes the toughest and most resilient person Ive ever met. For her to win that medal, I cant think of anyone more deserving.

And then there was Murphy, who did indeed extend the U.S. win streak in the mens 100 back to six straight Olympiads. For Murphy, the moment was extra significant because of those not here that he can share it with.

After winning his gold medal and clocking the second-fastest time ever with a 51.97, Murphy admitted that before the meet, he heard from other key players in the long U.S. win streak in the event, including Lenny Krayzelburg, Aaron Peirsol and even Matt Grevers, who Murphy beat out to earn a spot on the team at U.S. Trials.

Those guys that have won in the past, those are my idols, Murphy said. I grew up watching them. To hear their words of encouragement coming into this meet, that meant a great deal to me. That gave me a great deal of confidence, that they were thinking of me, saying that they believe in me to do great things.

The paths that Baker and Murphy took to the podium in the 100 back seem wildly divergent, but these two Cal Bears each had a plan that was executed to a T. They had expectations to live up to, and they did so. For each, the moment meant something special because of the other players involved.

Baker and Murphy may not be the flashiest of names, but on the biggest of stages at the Olympic Games, both flourished. Thousands of fans sitting in the arena and millions more watching at home on television all tuned in to see the unique stories of the Olympic Games, and its pretty cool when they turn out quite like that.

Power Outage In Atlanta Causes Worldwide Delta Meltdown

News Wrap: Delta computer outage cancels flights; 67 killed in Pakistan suicide bombing

Delta Airlines flights were grounded worldwide today following an early morning power outage in Atlanta, where the airline"s operations are headquartered. Delta says power outage happened around 2:30 a.m., and while flights that were in progress were able to reach their destinations, the airline was forced to halt flights throughout the morning, and expects cancellations and delays to continue.

Limited departures resumed at 8:40 a.m., but Delta is still warning travelers to expect delays or cancellations today. Some travelers arriving at airports this morning had no idea about the meltdown until they beheld the smoldering shitshow awaiting them at their respective Delta terminals, where large crowds stared forlornly at airport screens that were incorrectly showing flights on time.

Delta is issuing travel waivers for flights that are cancelled or "significantly" delayed; details here. And the airline is continuing to update the situation here.

Detailed yesterday by Hello Games, No Mans Sky update 1.03 is now available to download on PlayStation 4, weighing in at 824MB.

If youre getting a digital copy of No Mans Sky through the PlayStation Store, the pre-load is also live. According to reports, its a 4.22GB download for the entire file, with 3.68GB downloading initially. Adding in the update, youre looking at roughly a 5GB download.

Todays update is the first of many, and will require early players to delete their save game files to use it.

If you had an early copy somehow, your save game will technically work post update, but you will miss out on new content and experiences if you dont delete your save before updating (should be obvious why from notes below), Hello Games explained. We highly recommend deleting your save if you have played before updating your game (we wont do this in future, but its a day zero update).

Additionally, the servers were wiped yesterday, and will be wiped again today ahead of launch on August 9 in North America and August 10 in Europe.

[PATCH SPOILERS AHEAD]

You can read the full list of patch notes over here, with a few highlights below:

  • The Three Paths there are now new, unique paths you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience
  • The Universe we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.
  • Space Combat advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.
  • Ship scanning scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans

In the next update, Hello Games will add the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Visual enhancements should also arrive in the future.

Evan"s Banana "Bachelor In Paradise" Intro Got Exactly The Twitter Reaction You"d Expect

Bachelor In Paradise 2016 "Emily Wants to Kiss ...Jared" Sneak Peek

Evan Bass wasn"t exactly the most popular contestant on JoJo Fletcher"s season of The Bachelorette. The "erectile dysfunction expert" and single dad of three was best known for his beef with Chad "Meat Chad" Johnson specifically for throwing a total fit after Chad ripped his shirt. Viewers tended to make fun of him, but when Evan was cast on Bachelor in Paradise alongside Chad, we couldn"t help but be excited at the potential drama that combo could stir up. Right off the bat, the Evan LOLs are going strong. Evan"s banana Bachelor in Paradise introduction, an absurdly dorky "80s-style sequence, got exactly the reaction you"d expect on Twitter.

The super silly opening credits sequence, introducing each of the main cast members, was something I was looking forward to in the lead up to the season. When the hilariously hammy "80s-esque sequence was introduced in Season 2, people including people who don"t even watch the show absolutely loved it.

Bachelor Nation isn"t always the best at being self-aware and not taking itself too seriously, but that opening sequence proved that they were fully aware of how borderline-ridiculous they can be at times. The intro also serves as a cute little way of introducing each contestant"s personality. Prime example: Canadian Daniel Maguire pouring maple syrup all down his n***d bod = all you really need to know about that dude.

But as funny as Daniel"s maple-syrup-covered bit was, Evan"s banana intro totally stole the show. The opening sequence had other cast members being silly and goofy and a little bit sexy... and then there was Evan, awkwardly chowing down on a banana. Twitter reacted to that cringeworthy intro in the expected way.

Some were just impressed by the brilliant producer who had the idea to include the instantly iconic image of Evan + banana.

Many were completely unfazed that someone like Evan would do something banana-related in his intro, tying that symbolic banana to Evan"s career as an erectile dysfunction specialist.

One viewer even reported that Evan"s banana-eating intro provoked a spontaneous, uncontrollable physical reaction:

Evan may be awkward and a little bit cringeworthy, but one thing"s for sure: the guy is definitely good for a laugh and totally knows how to poke fun at the public"s perception of him. Or else why would he agree to eat a freakin" banana in his opening intro?
