Amid campaign chaos, Trump seeks reboot

#LoserDonald Says Goodbye To Paul Manafort

Seeking to move past the tumult that has damagedhis campaignsince he acceptedthe GOP presidential nomination,Donald Trump tried this week to broaden his appeal andsow the seeds for a competitive fall race against Hillary Clinton.

Trump shook up his campaign leadership, launched television ads, gave one of the best speeches of his candidacy andquietly visited flood-ravaged Louisiana. But much of his effort was overshadowed by the announcement Friday that his campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, had resigned, completing the shift in power at the top of Trumps campaignbutkeeping alive the sense of turbulence within the operation.

Trump mustlet the media have enough time to kind of contemplate everythingyouve said versuscontinuingto give them a buffet of things to distract them, said Craig Robinson, a former state Republican official in Iowa. This is where message discipline matters. Dont step on your own story.

Indeed, Manafortsdeparturedominated news coveragethat otherwise likely would have focused on the well-received speech Trump had delivered the night before, in which he expressed surprising regret for incendiary rhetoric, or his low-key visit Friday to learn about the devastation in Louisiana.

Instead, Manaforts controversial work for a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine seized the conversation on cable news and social media, pointing to upheaval in Trumps campaign. Manafort was effectively demoted earlier this week after Trump named Stephen K. Bannon,a pugilistic conservative-media honcho who has never worked on a campaign, as his chief executive officer and pollster Kellyanne Conway as his campaign manager the second leadership overhaul in two months.

You would hope by now you would have your core team in place for some time, said GOP strategistReed Galen, who worked for former President George W. Bush on his campaigns and in the White House.

Manafortsconsultingwork for former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovich, which was well-known, drew renewed scrutiny this week, including an Associated Press story Thursday that saidManaforts firm waged a covert lobbying effort for Ukraines ruling party aimed at influencing American public opinion. Manafort and a deputy did not register as foreign agents, a requirement for those lobbying on behalf of foreign leaders or parties, the AP reported.

Earlier in the week, theNew York Times reported that handwritten ledgers indicated that Manafort and associated firms received $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments from a pro-Russia political party tied to Yanukovich. The report said the ledgers were discovered by a Ukrainian anticorruption bureau.

In a carefully worded statement, Manafort said the suggestion that he accepted cash payments is unfounded, silly and nonsensical.

Trump, though, wanted to avoid being"distracted by whatever things Paul was dealing with, the candidatessonEricsaid in an interview to air on Fox News Sunday Morning Futuresthis weekend.

Evidence of Trumps renewed focuswas on display Thursday during his speech at a rally in Charlotte, N.C.In addition to offering regret for hurtful statements, Trump targetedClinton, markingthe third outingin a row wherehestuck with a script, something Republicans have been urging for months.

Trump is also trying to improve his standing in four states crucial for him Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida with $4 million in advertising beginning Friday that tries to paint Clinton as the unsafe choice for commander in chief. The ads, airingin such markets asPhiladelphia, Raleigh and Charlotte, were a clear effort to gain votes in the GOP-leaning suburbs surrounding those cities andexpand Trumps support beyond his white working-class base.

Trump and his runningmate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, also visited Friday with victims of the devastating flooding in Louisiana that has killed at least 13 and displaced thousands.

Touring the site of a disaster requires the kind of careful choreography Trump had yet to display with regularity on the campaign trail; politicians and elected officials try to avoid appearing as though they are being opportunistic about tragedy or hardship.Trumpstayedunder the radar, meeting with victims and touring the flood-ravaged area without a phalanx of news media trailing him. And he won at least one vote.

Terry Phinney,42, whose fathers home flooded, was impressed with Trumps efforts to educate himself about the disaster, noting the questions the nominee askedabout how many homes had been damaged and how many would be covered byflood insurance.

I just appreciate his passion, said Phinney, a maintenance supervisor at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, a large, modern house of worship on the outskirts of Baton Rouge where Trump stopped.

When he looked me in the eye and shook my hand, it felt real, Phinney said. The guy is down here for more than just a vote. I feel like this is legit. So hes got my vote.

Trump, who has a history of erratic messaging, has made similar nods toward a disciplined approach before, only to quickly revert to his free-wheeling ways.

Hes turned his campaign around several times for 48 hours, so theres always a wait-and-see till he gets loose on Twitter again, said Rob Stutzman, a GOP consultant who opposes Trump but says the party needs him to perform well to save its congressional majorities and legislative seats.

Others were skeptical that the latest reboot had the power to outweigh the divisivestatements Trump has made since launching his presidential run last summer about Mexican immigrants, women, Muslims, prisoners of war, the disabled and others. Notably, Trump included no specifics in his expression of regret.

All people are going to remember about Trump is all the nuttiness, said Katie Packer, a Republican strategist who ran an anti-Trump super PAC and served as 2012 nominee Mitt Romneys deputy campaign manager. Its hard to break through with anything substantive or reasonable.

Mehta reported from Los Angeles,Hennessy-Fiske from Central, and Bierman from Washington.

Wilson, Akunne, Gathers Among Players Reviewed In Writers" Players to Watch

Ezekiel Elliott: In Need Of Reps In Preseason? (Dallas Cowboys)

Training camp has come and gone and now the Cowboys are back in Texas, ready for Fridays second preseason game. The Dolphins come to town for a matchup at AT&T Stadium, where the starters are expected to get a few snaps in the first quarter, unlike last week in Los Angeles against the Rams.

The staff writers of DallasCowboys.com have each selected a player from both sides of the ball to evaluate throughout the game, followed by a review of their performances afterward.

Lets check out who the staff writers will be following closely in Fridays game with the Dolphins.

Rob Phillips

Chaz Green With Charles Brown retiring just before training camp, the swing tackle job is there for the taking. Green started at left tackle and played the majority of last Saturdays preseason opener against the Rams but committed three penalties. With Cameron Bradfield placed on Reserve/Injured earlier this week, Green doesnt appear to have major competition for the primary backup spot behind starters Tyron Smith and Doug Free. But last years third-round pick admits he must improve his technique. He gets another opportunity Friday to show the coaching staff they dont need to look outside the roster for swing tackle help, as they did last year with Brown.

Derek Akunne At 5-foot-11, Akunne isnt the biggest linebacker, and hes an undrafted rookie staring at a veteran linebacker depth chart. But he was a surprise standout in Oxnard and he delivered a big hit on Rams quarterback Sean Mannion that led to a Deji Olatoye interception. Damien Wilson (eye) is back to practice, but Andrew Gachkar is currently sidelined following thumb surgery. There might be opportunity to Akunne to grab one of these depth linebacker spots if he can show enough on special teams.

David Helman

Rico Gathers - Jason Garrett said they limited Gathers" snaps against the Rams because they wanted to put him in situations where he could be successful -- in other words, they didn"t want him to have to block too much. The upshot was that he only got in on a handful of plays. Gathers featured fairly often in practice this week, so I"m pretty curious to see if it translates to this game. If he"s going to make the roster, he"s going to need some kind of opportunity to show what he can do. Jason Witten and Gavin Escobar are unlikely to play much -- if at all -- and James Hanna just had a knee scope. There are plenty of reps to be had.

Shaneil Jenkins - The new guy was the talk of camp after he managed the only sack by a Dallas defender in the preseason opener. Everyone on the team calls Jenkins "Bronco," because he came here from Denver. But now we"ve got to see if he"s got a serious chance to make the Cowboys" roster, or if he"s just helping them work through some injuries along the defensive front. The defensive line looks awfully thin heading into this game, so I expect Jenkins to get a ton of snaps. It"s on him to follow up that last good performance with another one.

Nick Eatman

Lucky Whitehead - While I still think Whitehead will make this team, especially after his electrifying kickoff return last week to open the game, his role can still be defined. In fact, if he can prove himself as a receiver, it might affect how the rest of the receiver positon shakes out. We know Lucky can run. He can return kicks and punts and hes rather quick on that jet-sweep. But he needs to keep improving as a receiver and perhaps show some coverage ability running down on kicks. Getting on the team is likely happening. But becoming a regular on game day and active every week is something Whitehead can solidify with an all-around performance.

Deji Olatoye - He made two nice plays on the ball last week and picked up an interception in the process. Going back to last year, Olatoye shows hes got a knack for timing routes and jumping routes. But considering three veteran corners are ahead of him and Anthony Brown is making a case to make the team, Olatoye might be better suited to become that versatile safety-corner combo player. Olatoye has practiced quite a bit at both positions but Ill be interested to see if he gets in the game Friday night at safety. Hes a physical hitter who certainly has the body type to play either position.

Bryan Broaddus

Bryan Witzmann - The team is still looking for a swing tackle and Witzmann has been getting more and more work. He was more consistent than Chaz Green was against the Rams but there were still a few snaps where he wasn"t perfect technique wise. His size and movement skills make him an interesting prospect where before I didn"t think he had much of a chance to make the roster. Witzmann is still in there fighting, as others have gone by the way side. I could see him making it all the way to the final cut with a decision coming then. He is getting a fair shot and it"s worth my attention.

Damien Wilson - If there was a player that gave the defense a little juice these last few days of practice - it was Damien Wilson. His unfortunate accident robbed him of the majority of camp but he has made up some ground. As the linebacker group sits, Anthony Hitchens and Sean Lee are the starters but the SAM still appears to be up in the air. Wilson has the ability to play in all three spots but with his physical traits and ability to cover ground could be a candidate for that spot. When the defense is on the field this evening, my eyes will be focused on #57.

Champion US wrestler Jordan Burroughs stunned in quarters

A Day In the Life of Jordan Burroughs

RIO DE JANEIRO Defending Olympic and world champion Jordan Burroughs was stunned by Russia"s Aniuar Geduev on Friday in the quarterfinals of men"s freestyle wrestling.

Geduev, a three-time European champion, upended Burroughs 3-2 at 74 kilograms to hand the American just his third international loss and knock him out of gold-medal contention. Burroughs was trying to become the fourth U.S. wrestler with multiple Olympic golds.

Geduev jumped to a 3-0 lead in a match stopped several times so officials could clean a cut on Burroughs" head. Burroughs scored a late takedown, but it wasn"t enough to overcome the deficit.

Burroughs, a three-time world champion and the winner from the London Games in 2012, can still claim a bronze medal through the repechage after Geduev qualified for the finals.

It was that victory in London combined with his charismatic, social media-friendly persona that helped make Burroughs the face of wrestling as the sport fought to return to the Olympic program in 2013.

Burroughs, a New Jersey native who starred for the University of Nebraska, won the world title again in 2013. He was forced to settle for bronze in 2014 after hurting his knee in the opening match.

Burroughs returned to handily win the world championships in Las Vegas in 2015, and his dominant performance at the Olympic trials in April made it seem as though no one could touch him in Rio. He was so confident that he told The Associated Press in July that he planned to bring his gold medal from London to Rio so he could wear two of them to his post-Rio news conference.

But from the moment Burroughs hit the mat Friday, it just didn"t seem like his day.

Burroughs came out attacking in his first match, scoring on an early takedown to seize control of his opening match against Guinea Bissau"s Augusto Midana. Burroughs led 8-2 at the break and won 8-3 though it was unusual to see Burroughs give up multiple scores to such an unaccomplished opponent.

Geduev and Burroughs nearly came to blows just seconds into their match, as Geduev shoved Burroughs hard in the shoulders after Burroughs objected to a head slap by nearly slapping the Russian.

Geduev scored first and made point-scoring moves difficult for Burroughs. Geduev padded his lead with a pair of second-period pushouts, and Burroughs found himself on the mat trying to come to grips with a loss that dropped his international record to 130-3.

Geduev will face Iran"s Hassan Yazdanicharati for the gold at 74 kilograms. Georgia"s Vladimer Khinchegashvili will take on Japan"s Rei Higuchi for top honors at 57 kilograms.

Trouble getting the hepatitis A vaccine? Check prescription ... - KHON2

Hepatitis A Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Related Coverage

With an ongoing outbreak, a lot of people have been trying to get the hepatitis A vaccine.

But some are having trouble getting a prescription.

We checked with several pharmacies and a doctor to see why a prescription is needed.

We learned some insurance carriers require a prescription for reimbursement.

Makakilo resident Bernard Judson sayshe was having a hard time getting his hepatitis A vaccination.

Im not trying to get something for nothing. I just dont want to get something, said Judson.

He says it took him three days to get the vaccine. First, he went to a pharmacy and was told they were out. He then went to another one, but didnt have a prescription, so he was told he would have to pay.

I called my insurance company and they gave me the same line: We have this schedule for medications and you have to do certain things and you have to be high risk," he said.

Judson finally went to his doctor and got the vaccination there.

If you dont mind paying out of pocket for the vaccine, you can walk into any pharmacy that carries it without a prescription.

But if you want your insurance to pay for it, thats when you need a prescription.

Its not medically necessary to have a prescription, and in fact vaccine clinics can give a lot of vaccines without a prescription. However, major medical insurers in Hawaii, several of them, require a prescription for reimbursment of this very expensive hepatitis a vaccine, explainedDr. Kalani Brady.

Brady says the vaccines could cost you between $80 and $150 depending on where you go, and remember you need two doses, six months apart.

Safeways pharmacy charges $95 without a prescription. They have been doing approximately 100 vaccinations a day since last week.

Are you finding that most people are coming with a prescription or are they willing to pay out of pocket? KHON2 asked Alanna Isobe, Safeway Kapahulu pharmacy manager.

Most people are getting a prescription, she replied.

HMSA saysitpays for most of itsmembers who have a prescription.Itsays the hepatitis A vaccine is effective, but may not be right for everyone, which is why itwants members to talk to their doctor.

Kaiser Permanente offers the vaccine to their members at no charge. HMAA also covers the vaccine 100-percent for its members.

We also checked with Longs Drugs Pharmacy, which saidif a patient with HMSA HMOis unable to get a prescription, the pharmacycan still administer the vaccine, but wont be able to bill your insurance.

Doctors go digital for patients seeking hepatitis A vaccine

Many are turning to new, high-tech options to get their prescription.

HMSA offers online care to let people use a video call, like Facetime, to talk to a doctor.

Its helpful for those who dont have a primary care physician or cant get in touch with one.

Theres also another video-call option for those without insurance. Doctors on Call Now (DOCNow) is offering peace of mind from your laptop, tablet, even your cell phone.

Patients can video chat with a local doctor about questions for hepatitis A. Non-insured patientspay$49 a visit.

Well talk to you, see what your actual risk is, what your concerns are, and if we think its appropriate, we will electronically submit a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice, explained Dr. Jim Barahal, DOCNow CEO.

Theres a lot of questions that we can answer that pharmacy staff can answer, but there are a lot of questions that really need to be asked by a physician, he added.

DOCNow is open daily from 8 a.m.9 p.m. To receive your first visit free, download the promo code at doctorsoncallnow.com.

Tory Lanez "I Told You" Album Review: 6 Best Songs From Debut Project

PREMIERE ECOUTE - I Told You (Tory Lanez)

After releasing more than 10 mixtapes since 2009 and an EP in 2015, Tory Lanez has finally released his debut album, I Told You, Friday. Hailing from Toronto, many see the singer-rapper as someone who is following in the steps of Drake, but as Tory Lanez tells us on I Told You, he worked hard to get to where he is now.

While Lanez, 24,isnt a fan of Drake, its hard to not compare the two, especially on I Told You. Mixing singing and rapping, Lanez even tries his hand atdancehall with Luv. Even though Lanez is able to blendmultiple styles of music including R&B and trap-sounding hip-hop, it seems that Lanez has yet to find his ownstyle. At times on I Told You, Lanez can sound like Future or Fetty Wap while on other songs, such as Question Is, Lanez can be himself. The album is also bogged down by its lengthy tracklist which features 28 tracks (14 songs and 14 skits).

Save for a few standout tracks, Lanezs debut offering is a largely forgettable one but while I Told You isnt Lanezs best effort, the best songs on the album prove the Canadian artist has what it takes to craft another hit.

1. Say It

Tory Lanezs sampling of Brownstones 1994 R&B classic If You Love Me has proven to be a major hit for the singer and easily the best track on Lanezs debut album. From the awesome production to Lanezs sultry vocals, Lanez is at his best when he takes the R&B route.

2. Luv

Tory Lanezs second album single also makes use of a 1990s classic, this time sampling Tanto Metro and Devontes dancehall classic, Everyone Falls In Love. Just like he didwith Say It, when Lanez sticks to singing, he is one of the best artists in R&B.

3. Friends With Benefits

What makes Friends With Benefits stand out from the other songs on I Told You is the excellent production. With its constant pauses, static and screams, Friends With Benefits is reminiscent of The Weeknds The Hills.

4. Question Is

With production by Cardo, Yung Exclusive and Kanye West, Tory Lanez makes use of a smooth beat to give us a view into his life which includes a strained relationship with his family, unborn children and a friend who did him wrong. But the real star of the show in Question Is is singer Briana Cash who delivers an excellent hook.

5. To D.R.E.A.M.

Even though Tory Lanez is better suited as a singer, his rapping is nothing to scoff at. On To D.R.E.A.M., Tory proves that he can hang with many of todays rappers and does his best Fetty Wap impression on what is one the albums best hooks.

6. Flex

Like the songs title suggests, Flex is all about Tory flexing (showing off) on all of his haters and doubters. Mixing singing and rapping, Flex has a chance to be a hit single for Lanez.

Gawker Is Dead. These Posts Are Why We"ll Miss It.

[News] FTW - Gawker dot com is no more!

Gawker, one of the defining magazines of the 21st century, announced Thursday that its shutting down next week for reasons that are too repulsive and terrifying to think about for long. In its 14-year lifespan, Gawker published breakthrough investigations and scurrilous gossip and everything in between. It created much of the lively, ironic, emotionally labile house style of the internet. It revealed that the mayor of Toronto had been filmed smoking crack and that Politicos Mike Allen let a source write an item and that BuzzFeeds Benny Johnson plagiarized from Yahoo Answers. The fact that a billionaire could kill Gawker out of spite is a crisis, and the fact that Gawker is gone is a tragedy.

When it comes to Gawker we are conflicted out the wazoo. One Slate editor is married to a Gawker editor. One is married to a lawyer who represented Gawker in the Hulk Hogan trial. One is a former Gawker Media executive editor. None of these Slate staffers worked on this roundup.

Here are some of our favorite Gawker posts for you to read before they disappear into the Memory Furnace to be replaced by something Peter Thiel likes better.

Weavers famous mozzarella-stick stunt isnt just about TGI Fridays endless appetizer. Its about the supreme difficulty of entertaining yourself for 14 g*****n hours without being able to read a book or use the free Wi-Fi. (Though she did play with the TGI Fridays app.) Torie Bosch

Everythingpublished in Gawkers Dog column was a pure delight. Its impossible to imagine any other publication printing this spot-on but affectionate satire of both dogs and columnists, and accompanying it with such beautiful illustrations (by Jim Cooke, of course). This is a good one in which Dog explains why he doesnt wear a watch. Its not for me. Im classy, not flashy. I also dont know how to read a watch, Dog writes. I will miss Dog so much. L.V. Anderson

Coens departing editor letter is a total evisceration of the then-editor of Star, who tried to have an unflattering post removed. It is hilarious yet very fair, a burned bridge done right. Jeffrey Bloomer

Writing before the #blacklivesmatter movement took hold, Jeffersons bracing, bitter essay on George Zimmermans acquittal, on what he had experienced as a black man in America, and on what black people have to put up with every day remains powerful. Seth Maxon

Lawsons Real Housewives roundups summed up so much of what made Gawker Gawker: bitchy, exacting, exhaustive, hilarious, obsessive, and a little surreal. At their best, the recaps blurred fiction and reality so that if you didnt watch the show (and maybe even if you did), you wouldnt be quite sure what really went down and what was spun purely out of Lawsons Bravo-addled headspace. The loopy patois he concocted for the Countess LuAnn de Lesseps was mind-alteringworthy of a thread in David Mitchells Cloud Atlas. Jessica Winter

Donald Trumps hair, with its absurd, origami-like complexity, has long been an object of ridicule and speculation. Is it a wig? Is it a transplant? Is it the hide of an unfortunate golden retriever? This year, Gawker finally cracked the case, accumulating a mountain of circumstantial evidence that the persimmon-colored demagogue is wearing an awful and outrageously expensive weave, created by a specialist who worked out of his own building. This is a hilarious investigation for the ages and one of the best things Ive read this whole godforsaken election cycle. Jordan Weissmann

Cushs outrage over the revealed history of bogus synopses for the 90s cartoon Street Sharks is one of the funniest things to come from the Ghost of Internet Past. Who knows how much time (or how many takedown requests) will pass before we purge this fake history from our collective consciousness? Dawnthea Price

Perhaps the defining literary work of our time, every sentence a crystalline gem of violent beauty and power. Gabriel Roth

This little throwaway post from almost 10 years ago is so funny and great that I dont even know what to say. Heather Schwedel

Plenty of media organizations are happy to be the vessels for the stories famous and powerful people tell about themselves. Gawker never was, and we all benefitted from the existence of a place that called out and ripped apart self-serving narratives. Josh Levin

This is a little morbid, but its also an example of what made Gawker great. Even with its hearty sense of self-deprecation, rereading this today stings. Susan Matthews

Pareenes case against each of the remaining presidential candidates on the day of the New York primary was a lucid encapsulation of this dreadful political year. Seth Maxon

Snark is the revenge of the powerless. The powerful dont like it. They prefer smarm, a positive, happy view of the world, which smooths out conflict and serves to maintain the status quo. Tom Scocca makes the case against smarm and shows why we need snark in this memorable 2013 essay. Helaine Olen

This might not be the most serious or poignant of Richs writing at Gawkerat root its about trading b******s with a guy in Toon Lagoonbut it is representative of the fearless, honest, and compassionate way hes treated subjects, especially queer ones, in his time there. Richs ability to find humor and beauty in the strangest or most mundane of assignments has always impressed me, and this piece represents an early and important ethnography of a now-defining aspect of queer male life. I think of his as a crucial voice in the LGBTQ conversation, one with which Ive often agreed and just as often argued. I hope, after Gawker, we continue to hear it. J. Bryan Lowder

f**k Boston by Hamilton Nolan

Ive only lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts for a year and Im leaving in two weeks, but I quite like the place as well as the city it borders. Still, Hamilton Nolans 2013 essay f**k Bostonin which Hamilton clarifies that he also means f**k the Puritans and f**k Boston (the band)is one of the funniest things Gawker ever published. Seth Maxon

What other magazine would have let someone publish this? And yet, why not! They probably got a lot of pageviews out of it too. Gabriel Roth
