Final pits Brazil vs Germany and old ghosts

Brazil vs Germany penalties Shots on Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 Final

RIO DE JANEIRO: The first half was not even over and Brazilian fans, 3-0 up in the semi-final against Honduras, were chanting, Germany, just you wait, your time is coming.

A few hours later, their wish came true and after the Germans beat Nigeria 2-0 in the other semi-final one of the most intriguing sub-plots of the Olympics was set: an under-23 version of the unforgettable 2014 World Cup semi-final that finished Brazil 1-7 Germany.

That six-goal mauling left a huge scar on Brazils footballing psyche and as the chants showed, fans in the host nation are desperate to get revenge if not on the full German side, then at least on a German side.

As they left the Maracana after their 6-0 win, Brazils players did not know if Germany would overcome Nigeria in the second semi-final.

But they did, and that was good news for full back Douglas Santos.

Most of his team mates preferred to downplay a potential revenge match and Santos was one of the few to admit there will be a special atmosphere at the Maracana when two of the greatest national teams in the world meet on Saturday.

I dont see it as being about revenge, for me its an opportunity, said the Atletico Mineiro defender. It will be an opportunity to turn around something the fans today talk about as a difficult defeat. G*d willing, we are going to reverse that score line.

DIFFERENT SCENARIOS

In reality, the similarities between that game and Saturdays one dont go much farther than the names on the tickets.

The teams that play the Olympic tournament comprise players under the age of 23, with three over-age players permitted on each team.

Neymar is the only player on either squad to have played in the 2014 World Cup and he missed the Germany game through injury.

And although neither side have won the Olympic gold, communist East Germany won it in 1976, that is largely irrelevant to Germany but of huge importance to Brazil and they have gone all out to break their gold medal hoodoo.

Brazil called up Neymar, arguably their only world-class player, as well as a host of their top performers that includes Gabriel Jesus, who signed for Manchester City last month for 27 million pounds; Gabriel Barbosa, the 19-year old striker who goes by the nickname Gabigol; and Paris St-Germain defender Marquinhos.

Brazilian sides were happy to let their players miss league duty to play in the Olympics because they are so desperate to win that one elusive title.

German sides, meanwhile, were reluctant to let their top stars prioritise the Olympics over the Bundesliga and clubs are not obliged to release them.

They came to Brazil with no players from the countrys dominant club Bayern Munich and only four from the other three clubs that finished in the top four of last years Bundesliga. Their three over-age players have just 26 full caps between them, while Brazils three have 81.

As if those advantages were not enough, Brazil will have home advantage.

That made little difference in 2014 but Brazil hope that the Maracana is more intimidating that the Mineirao in Belo Horizonte and that the young German players are easier to ruffle than their older peers were two years ago.

The fans help us, said Gabriel Jesus after 52,000 supporters roared them to victory over Honduras. It makes a difference. I am sure they will help us even more on Saturday.

Elizabeth Smart Says Abductor"s p**n Addiction Made Her "Living h**l Worse"

ELIZABETH SMART KIDNAPPING DOCUMENTARY - FULL DOCUMENTARY !

Thirteen years after being rescued from captivity, Elizabeth Smart opened up about how her childhood abductor Brian David Mitchells addiction to p*********y made her living h**l worse.

PHOTOS: Celebrity Activists!

He would just sit and look at it and stare at it, and he would just talk about these women, and then when he was done, he would turn and look at me, and he would be like, Now were going to do this, Smart, now 28, recalled in a new video shared by Fight the New Drug, an anti-p**n non-profit group, on Friday, August 19.

Looking at p*********y wasnt enough for him. Having s*x with his wife after looking at p*********y wasnt enough for him, she continued. He just always wanted more.

Elizabeth Smart YouTube PHOTOS: Stars Who Survived Abuse

Smart was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home in 2002 when she was 14 years old. She was held in captivity for nine months by Mitchell, now 62, and his wife, Wanda Barzee, only miles away from her familys house. During that time, Mitchell raped Smart multiple times a day and often threatened to kill her if she tried to escape. In March 2003, the teen abductee was finally rescued after months of nationwide searches.

In Fridays video, the child safety activist also recounted a time when Mitchell, who she only refers to as her captor, showed her a magazine full of hard-core p*********y, just days after he forced her to drink so much alcohol that she passed out.

It just led to him raping me more, more than he already did which was a lot, Smart explained. I cant say that he would not have gone out and kidnapped me had he not looked at p*********y. All I know is that p*********y made my living h**l worse.

Now, Smart works as a contributor for ABC News and continues to advocate for child sexual abuse prevention. She married Matthew Gilmourin February 2012, and welcomed her first child, daughter Chloe, in February 2015.

3 Things to Look For as the Denver Broncos take on the 49ers

SUPER BOWL REMATCH!! Madden 17 Gameplay - Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos (XB1/PS4 1080p 60fps)

DENVER -- Adidas did not analyze pro-football odds when creating its advertising slogan a few years ago.

Impossible is something when trying to make the NFL. It"s ridiculously hard. And landing with the Broncos increases the level of difficulty. Beyond the defense, the Broncos won Super Bowl 50 (the display pictured above is featured outside of Sports Authority (For Now) Field at Mile High) because of their depth. The Broncos are the NFL"s Noah Ark of defenses: they have two of everything. Or so it seems.

As such, Saturday night"s game against the San Francisco 49erscarries added significance for players on the bubble. Let"s a take a look at a few in my Three Things to Watch For:

Is Zaire Anderson ready to take next step?

Every timeI looked up in training camp, it seemed like Anderson or cornerback Lorenzo Doss was making a play. Anderson nearly made the team last year out of Nebraska. His lack of size showed up against proven NFL running backs like Chris Johnson. He appears sturdier this season, and quicker in pass coverage. He"s putting himself in position to win a reserve spot.

Are the young safeties this good?

The Broncos lost games to the Steelers and Raiders last season, which placed them on the brink of missing the playoffs, because of lacking depth at safety. That shouldn"t be a problem this season if camp can be trusted. Justin Simmons, who should fill a David Bruton role, and Will Parks, a late-round pick from Arizona, have been strong. Parks" development bears watching with Shiloh Keo suspended for the first two games. Parks could make Keoexpendable at some point.

What"s up in the return game?

Jordan Norwood remains the safe choice. He can catch a punt, no easy task. And he has the ability to make plays. But is he as slippery as Bralon Addison or Kalif Raymond? Addison and Raymond must make their move if they are going to unseat the veteran. And it begins tonight.

USA"s Matthew Centrowitz shocks with 1500m gold medal

Olympics 2012: Matthew Centrowitz learns the strategy behind speed

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 20 (Reuters) - American Matthew Centrowitz pulled of a shock victory in the 1,500m final on Saturday, stunning pre-race favorite Asbel Kiprop of Kenya to secure his country"s first gold medal in the event since 1908.

In the run-up to the Games few expected the 26-year-old to challenge for a medal as all the focus was on Kenya"s former Olympic champion Kiprop, who had won the last three world titles.

But after a pedestrian race that was won in a time 24 seconds outside world record pace, Centrowitz held off defending champion Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria to cross the line in 3:50:00.

Centrowitz, who won a world championship bronze in 2011 and silver in 2013, ran the final lap in 50.62 seconds to take gold in a field stacked with African talent.

Makhloufi, who also won silver in the 800m, had to settle for second place once again and Nick Willis of New Zealand snatched the bronze medal.

Kiprop, who has run the fastest time of the year, faded in the final lap to finish sixth.
