Sheriff: Shooter dead, multiple injured after Texas high school shooting

A Spin Around Alpine, Texas.

ALPINE, Texas (AP) A 14-year-old girl died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday after shooting and injuring another female student inside a high school in West Texas, according to the local sheriff.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the gunfire that erupted shortly before 9 a.m. at Alpine High School in Alpine, a town of 5,900 about 220 miles southeast of El Paso. The shooting was followed by a series of unrelated threats made by a male caller that added to the chaos of the day and diverted law enforcement from the high school.

"That"s ridiculous for someone to call in something like this when we"ve got this situation going on," Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told radio station KVLF.

The sheriff said the family of the girl who died had moved to Alpine about six months ago. She was a freshman at the school.

Dodson said the injured student ran outside seeking help and was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren"t considered life threatening.

Dodson said a U.S. Homeland Security officer who was responding to the incident was shot in the leg when a U.S. marshal who also was responding accidentally discharged his weapon. The injured officer was transported to a hospital in Odessa, Texas.

The shooting at the high school prompted a lockdown at Alpine"s three public schools, which were later evacuated.

Alpine police Chief Russell Scown said even after the shooter was found mortally wounded in a bathroom at the school, it wasn"t immediately clear that she was the assailant. Emergency responders at one point thought two shooters may have been involved.

The school district declined comment, saying it would release a statement later.

Law enforcement officials were also dealing with threats made in the wake of the shooting. They said they don"t believe there was a connection between the threats and the shooting at the high school.

Authorities said threats were phoned in to an Alpine hospital and to Sul Ross State University, which is about a mile from the high school. Officers and bomb-sniffing dogs had to search for explosives in each building of the university, Dodson said. None were found.

"Right now, we think we"ve got some nut, who in the midst of one of our most emotional times here at our school started calling in these threats," Dodson said at an afternoon news conference, adding, "Basically, he"s what we"re looking for right now."

There was also a threatening note left at a motel in Marathon, Texas, about 30 miles east of Alpine.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said earlier that he"s monitoring developments in the Alpine shooting and promised to provide support for law enforcement agencies investigating the matter.

Destiny: Xur weapons, gear and location, September 9-11. Bad Juju!

Destiny Sniper Nerf: Competitive Sniping is Dead (Rise of Iron Patch)

Xur"s back! Wafting his little wispy tentacles seductively in your face and being all "my will is not my own". Do you think he breaths like normal people? I always imagine those wafty strands are like ribbons on a vent. It must be like standing in front of gentle air conditioning set to "warm and damp".

This week Destiny"s hooded one is skulking about the Tower, under those big doors opposite the Speaker, with helmets for everyone! (Although, if you"re a Hunter we"re, so, so sorry). And, for pulse rifle fans, Bad Juju is bringing some good luck to all your burst fire hopes and dreams.

Here"s the full list.

  • An Insurmountable Skullfort (Titan helmet, 13 strange coins)
  • ATS/8 Arachnid (Hunter helmet, 13 strange coins)
  • Apotheosis Veil (Warlock helmet, 13 strange coins)
  • Bad Juju (pulse rifle, 23 strange coins)
  • Legacy engram (gauntlet, 29 strange coins)

Working on through the helmets first we"ve got the Titan"s Insurmountable Skullfort, which is great if you like melee. It spawns you ready to punch and with an extra charge in the bank, as well as adding melee charge on orb pick ups and bonus super juice on melee kills. Plus it refills your health when you use Storm Fist. Basically, if you"re a Titan who likes punching things you need this.

Next up is the Hunter"s ATS/8 Arachnid which isn"t probably worth the effort as all it does it let you zoom when using Golden Gun. Hunters: best wait, there are more useful magic hats out there.

That brings us on to the Warlock"s Apotheosis Veil. This fills your health, melee and grenade energy when you activate your super. That makes it great for comebacks when things get a bit much, especially with Sunsinger"s support focus or Stormcaller"s crowd control powers.

Which just leaves us with Bad Juju, a fast powerful pulse rifle that can be switched to full auto. It"s accurate, especially with its bonus hipfire perk and has a perk called String of Curses that means it can reload itself, buff damage and charge your Super on every kill. It"s worth it.

As ever you"ve got until 10am GMT/2am PT on Sunday to make your choice and earn what you need. And don"t forget to grab some Three of Coins while you"re there. You"re never not going to need them.

Seen something newsworthy? Tell us!

Lady Gaga Responds to Being Called a Catholic Hypocrite

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

Lady Gaga gives a thumbs up while walking around town in her black workout gear on Tuesday (May 10) in New York City.

The 30-year-old singer was seen later that day wearing a knit sweater and black leggings while leaving her apartment.

Gaga took to Instagram to respond to a blogger who referred to her as a hypocrite for posting about her religious beliefs even though shes a celebrity.

Dear Becky Roach, Mary Magdalene washed the feet of Christ and was protected and loved by him. A prostitute. Someone society shames as if she and her body are a mans trash can. He loved her and did not judge. He let her cry over him and dry his feet with the hair of a harlot. We are not just celebrities we are humans and sinners, children, and our lives are not void of values because we struggle. We are as equally forgiven as our neighbor. G*d is never a trend no matter who the believer, Gaga wrote.

Broncos LB Brandon Marshall protests national anthem in NFL opener

ESPN First Take - Brandon Marshall: "Jay Cutler Can Be MVP"

Colin Kaepernick"s national anthem protest seems to be slowly be gaining steam across the NFL.

During the NFL opener on Thursday, Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall joined the cause by kneeling during the national anthem.

The Broncos linebacker was the only player from either team who kneeled before the game. Also of note: Marshall was a teammate of Kaepernick"s in college when both played at Nevada.

The Broncos issued a statement after Marshall took a knee.

"While we encourage members of our organization to stand during the National Anthem, we understand and respect it being a personal decision," the Broncos said.

Marshall is the third player in two weeks to join Kaepernick"s cause. Seahawks defensive back Jeremy Lane and 49ers safety Eric Reid both kneeled during national anthem before they played in their final preseason game.

After the game, Marshall clarified this reasoning for kneeling during the anthem.

"I"m not against the military. I"m not against police or America. I"m just against social injustice," Marshall told reporters after the game, per to the Denver Post. "I prayed about this long and hard and decided this is what I wanted to do."

Marshall said he didn"t tell any other Broncos about his decision, other than tight end Virgil Green, and said he plans to keep kneeling going forward. He said he also plans to donate an undisclosed amount of money to causes benefiting veterans.

"I looked at my phone and I already have a bunch of hate comments and this is why I"m doing this," Marshall said.

When the rest of the NFL schedule kicks off this weekend, Marshall, Kaepernick, Lane and Reid could have some company in the protesting department. The Seahawks have hinted they plan on protesting as a team during their season opener against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Kaepernick has made it clear that he"s not going to stand for the national anthem until police brutality against minorities comes to an end.

"There"s a lot of things that need to change," Kaepernick said on Aug. 28. "One specifically? Police brutality. There"s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That"s not right. That"s not right by anyone"s standards."

"What is Aleppo?" THIS is Aleppo

Hillary Clinton mocked Gary Johnson"s lack of knowledge about Aleppo

MSNBC commentator Mike Barnicle seemed floored, replying, "You"re kidding." Nope, Johnson wasn"t.

Johnson later said he understood Aleppo. But just in case he has a less-than-white-knuckle grip on one of the most pressing foreign policy matters facing the United States and world, allow us to explain.

This is Aleppo

A decade ago Aleppo was a bustling economic hub boasting more than 2 million residents. Its robust history and ancient architecture drew many tourists. After four years of hellish battle, it was estimated last month that the city was home to roughly one-tenth of that number, between 200,000 and 300,000.

Why the drop?

Brutal fighting, plain and simple. Many residents were killed. Others fled. Those who remained haven"t received much aid and are suffering shortages of food, fuel and medicine, a situation that grew only more desperate in July when President Bashar Assad"s forces bombarded a major supply artery into the city. The fighting presses on, and even after rebel forces claimed to break the siege in southern Aleppo, humanitarian groups say there"s been little change to the residents" plight.

What"s the casualty toll?

In Syria, it"s an estimated quarter-million. There are also 5 million who have fled the country, and 6.6 million people internally displaced. In Aleppo, the tolls are murkier. A recent report stated that 6,000 people, mostly civilians, died in 80 days of fighting. Last month, the last 15 doctors serving the eastern part of the city wrote President Barack Obama to say that a medical facility in Syria was being bombed every 17 hours. At that rate, medical services could be destroyed in a month, "leaving 300,000 people to die," they wrote.

Who"s dying?

The violence is indiscriminate, as evidenced by a suspected chlorine gas attack that injured children and killed market patrons in the eastern part of the city. A barrel bomb attack also claimed children as victims a few weeks ago. Watchdog groups blamed both attacks on the Assad regime, which has denied using chlorine gas for military purposes in the past.In another disturbing case -- this one with a happier ending -- doctors had to deliver the baby of a mother seriously injured in a bomb attack. The child wasn"t breathing as he emerged from the womb, but doctors quickly got his lungs working. His mother survived, too.

Who is going to win?

Likely nobody. Reporting from such a violent locale can be tricky, but earlier this year, CNN"s Clarissa Ward went undercover behind rebel lines to give a fascinating picture of what"s happening on the ground. Months later, she would tell the UN Security Council point-blank, "There are no winners in Aleppo."

Is any end in sight?

Well, no. This week, diplomats, politicians and soldiers met in London to discuss the situation, but their plan was billed not as a blueprint for peace but a starting block for negotiations.

As the war involves a cast of warring players who are unlikely to get along (and many of whom weren"t present in London) -- including Russia, the United States, Turkey, ISIS, Hezbollah and Iran -- many are uncertain this is the best path to bringing the crisis under control.

Fantasy Football: Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls could still get "majority" of carries

Seattle Seahawks Hype Video 2016-17 || "Bout The Business" || HD

SEATTLE, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Sunday"s game against the Miami Dolphins will be the "second preseason game" for Thomas Rawls.

That"s not exactly music to the ears of his fantasy owners. Typically in preseason games, the stars play in limited fashion, ducking out after a few series. That could be what happens with Rawls.

But despite Carroll"s comments, ESPN"s Sheil Kapada wrote: "If he plays like the guy who led the NFL in yards per carry last year and feels good physically, Rawls could get the majority of the carries."

"Just in the amount of plays," Carroll told reporters Wednesday. "It"s the second preseason game for him, if you look at it that way, and we"re trying to take care of him as we"ve said all along, in every way that we can. We"re just going to watch and see how he does and how he handles it, that"s all. Just see how he handles it. That would be his only restriction, is how he"s taking the rigors of the game."

On Tuesday, the Seahawks listed Christine Michael as its starter over Rawls.

Rawls, 23, had 830 yards and four touchdowns on 147 carries last season for the Seahawks. Michael had 157 yards on 26 carries this preseason.

If Rawls had stayed healthy and was prepared for the Week 1 match-up, he would certainly be a top-10 play in Week 1. The Miami Dolphins allowed the most fantasy points per game to running backs in 2015. Michael is a high-end RB2 and a solid flex play this week. Rawls could still move into RB2 consideration, but currently appears to be a shaky flex option in deeper leagues.

Rawls was not listed on the Seahawks Week 1 injury report and is practicing fully. He is expected to be on a snap count against the Dolphins.

This situation remains one to monitor, probably up until Sunday"s kickoff.

"Did they tell me that it was going to be tough to get back? Yeah. But, I know that I"m built for it and I"m proud to say where I"m from. I"m from Flint, Michigan, where you"ve gotta be tough. And there is nothing that can stop me," Rawls told reporters last month.

Horse and carts granted extension in Melb

Mel B - 20 minutowy trening całego ciała

Horse-drawn carriages will remain a fixture of Melbourne"s city streets until at least mid-2017.

Melbourne City Council has come under increasing pressure in recent years from animal welfare campaigners to cancel the trading permits of horse-drawn carriage operators.

The trading permits expiry date has been pushed back from February to June 2017 to allow for wider community consultation about the long-term arrangement for operators, a council spokesperson said in a statement.
