Gambling recap: Eagles only 20-1 to win Super Bowl; a $150000 parlay that almost was

Madden 17 Connected Franchise | Rebuilding The Philadelphia Eagles | Best Team I"ve Ever Built II

Betting against the Philadelphia Eagles was a popular strategy in an offseason that saw their odds to win the Super Bowl plummet to 100-1. In September, only the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers had worse Super Bowl odds than the Eagles.

Las Vegas sportsbook operator CG Technology initially listed the Eagles" season win total at 7.5, but took so much money on the under that the book was forced to cut the number down to 6.5 with inflated juice on the under. Nearly 90 percent of the money bet on the Eagles" season win total was on the under at William Hill"s Nevada sportsbook. And in CG Technology"s odds to make the playoffs, the Eagles opened at "Yes" +150 and "No" -170. The "No" closed at -280.

"That just goes to show how everybody ... fans, smart guys, faded this team before the season," Jason Simbal, vice president of race and sports for CG Technology, said. "People were talking about them being the worst team in the league."

That talk, at least for now, has ceased. The Eagles improved to 3-0 with an impressive 34-3 drubbing of the respected Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Seventy-four percent of the money bet on the Steelers-Eagles game at William Hill was on favored Pittsburgh.

Philadelphia is now 20-1 to win the Super Bowl at the Westgate SuperBook. The Eagles are 10-1 to win the NFC Championship, a dramatic improvement for a team with a rookie quarterback and few big names on either side of the ball.

Philadelphia started the season at the very bottom of longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker Nick Bogdanovich"s power ratings, ahead of only the Tennessee Titans, Browns and 49ers. Now, only a handful of teams are ranked ahead of the Eagles.

"They"re definitely the shock of the year so far," Bogdanovich, director of trading at William Hill, said. "I didn"t expect anything from them. You"re talking about new coach, new quarterback, new systems, new schemes. They look like world beaters, for sure."

Station Casinos" sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said he"d have only five teams -- New England, Denver, Minnesota, Seattle and Green Bay -- ahead of Philadelphia in his power ratings.

"It"s still early and two of the three wins have been over the Browns and the Bears," Esposito said. "But I"m really impressed with [quarterback Carson] Wentz through three weeks."

Wild college football Saturday

Hugh Citron, sportsbook manager at the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, was in the back office Saturday night, when he heard a yelp. He looked at the TV and saw a Stanford player celebrating in the end zone. Citron could only shake his head.

Stanford was around a 2.5- to 3.5-point favorite over UCLA. The Cardinal trailed 13-9 late in the fourth quarter, before quarterback Ryan Burns connected with JJ Arcega-Whiteside on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds to play.

On the Bruins" ensuing possession, UCLA moved near midfield with four seconds left. On the final play of the game, Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen dropped back to attempt a Hail Mary, but was sacked and fumbled. Stanford"s Solomon Thomas picked up the fumble and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown to cover the spread.

"That last play really turned the whole day," Citron said, calling Saturday "a wash."

Stanford"s win also was the worst decision of the day for CG Technology, with the final two minutes causing a $200,000 swing against the house, including $60,000 on the last-play defensive touchdown. But it was only the first of two costly nighttime endings for the books.

Arizona State, a 3.5-point favorite over California, covered the spread by returning an onside kick attempt for a touchdown with 48 seconds to play in the Sun Devils" 51-41 win over the Bears.

"Those hurt," said Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports at MGM, said.

Tennessee"s comeback win over Florida and Duke"s outright upset of Notre Dame helped the books survive the nighttime dramatics. Leading 21-0 in the first half, Florida was listed as a -1,100 favorite in in-game wagering at William Hill. One bettor put $340 on the Gators at that point, a bet that would have netted $30.90. But the Volunteers rallied from behind in the second half for a 38-28 win. Duke, a 21-point underdog, stunned Notre Dame 38-35 on a field goal with 1:24 to play. The Fighting Irish were listed at -1,300 on the moneyline at William Hill, where a bettor risked $13,000 on Notre Dame to win straight up. The bet would have netted $1,000. William Hill took nine moneyline bets on the Blue Devils to pull the upset, none greater than $20. CG Technology did not take a single moneyline bet on the Blue Devils.

"We had a kid put a nickel ($500) on Duke on the moneyline at plus-850," Ed Salmons, assistant manager at the Westgate at SuperBook.

The ticket included four Friday baseball games (Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers) one college football game on Saturday (Iowa State -7) and three NFL moneylines on Sunday (Green Bay, Denver and the New York Giants). The first seven legs all hit, leaving it all up to Eli Manning and the Giants on Sunday. Manning threw an interception on the Giants" final possession of a 29-27 loss to the Washington Redskins. The parlay would have paid $150,000.

Charles Osgood announces Jane Pauley as his successor

"Sunday Morning" host Charles Osgood"s exit interview

The on-air transition will likely be welcomed by fans of the beloved Sunday morning newsmagazine. Pauley has been a popular substitute host of the broadcast since 2014, and she was considered the most likely person to take over for Osgood.

Osgood, 83, announced his retirement plan last month, and Sunday was his final program. He will continue to appear on the show occasionally, according to CBS News president David Rhodes.

"There"s nobody like him, and there"s no show like this show," Rhodes said in a phone interview.

Pauley"s promotion is -- in part -- a signal that the show itself isn"t changing. Executive producer Rand Morrison is staying in place. And Pauley, 65, is well known to "CBS Sunday Morning" viewers.

Pauley joined the program as a contributor in April 2014, a few months after the program profiled her distinguished career.

"We first got to know Jane when we did a story about her," Morrison said in a statement. "Our viewers immediately responded by suggesting she belonged on "Sunday Morning" permanently. And as is so often the case, they were right. She"s a dedicated, experienced broadcast journalist. But every bit as important, she"s a delight to work with. A worthy successorand a perfect fit."

Pauley"s first program will be on October 9. (Next week, October 2, "Sunday Morning" is pre-empted by an NFL football game.)

She recently praised Osgood while speaking at the News and Documentary Emmys.

"He"s going to be missed by millions," she said.

She asked aloud, "What will "Sunday Morning" be without his "presence?" His calm demeanor? His civility? His curiosity? His delight?"

She said "CBS Sunday Morning" is a kind of church for many Americans. (It is the most-watched Sunday morning news program, reliably out-rating all the political talk shows.)

"For 22 years, the church of "Sunday Morning" has had an officiant who reliably conveyed grace," Pauley said at the Emmys. "People will miss him deeply, because even in the worst of times, it felt like Charles Osgood could see the best in us."

Nia Jax vs. Alicia Fox: Winner and Reaction for WWE Clash of Champions 2016

Don’t miss WWE Clash of Champions 2016 – Sunday, Sept. 25

Nia Jax made her WWE pay-per-view debut in impressive fashion Sunday at Clash of Champions, as she decisively defeated Alicia Fox.

WWE shared a video clip of Jax"s Samoan Dropfinisher:

Mike Killiam of WrestleZone.com provided his take on Jax"s new finishing move:

After getting drafted to Raw, Jax showcased her dominance on a weekly basis as part of the red brand by dominating local enhancement talent and displaying her pure strength and power.

Fox became the first main-roster competitor to step up to Jax, however, after the former NXT standout destroyed one of Foxy"s friends.

That led to the one-time Divas champion flipping out on Jax backstage, including throwing a tissue box in her face.

The Rock"s cousin didn"t take kindly to that, as rather than having a bout against Fox on Raw, she drove her through a barrier, which set the stage for their grudge match at Clash of Champions.

Fox showed great fight and determination in agreeing to a match against Jax despite the obvious size disadvantage, but Nia vowed to make her pay:

Although Fox was well aware of the huge challenge that awaited her, she also realized it was a great opportunity to make herself a player in Raw"s revamped women"s division:

Ever since Sasha Banks, Charlotte and Becky Lynch got called up to the main roster last year, Fox became something of an afterthought. That became even truer when the brand split led to the likes of Alexa Bliss, Carmella and Bayley making the leap from NXT as well.

While Fox has been part of the main roster for years, her opportunities to be featured in meaningful angles have been few and far between, which is why her rivalry with Jax stood out as a chance to return to the spotlight.

Even so, Fox entered Clash of Champions as a massive underdog due to the notion that the match was set up to be a stepping stone for Jax rather than a story of redemption for Fox.

That proved to be the case, as Jax picked up her first win of significance on the main roster and potentially established herself as a threat to go after the Raw Women"s Championship in the near future.

Jax is a supremely talented competitor with great bloodlines, and the fact she stands out due to her look and style suggest she will be given plenty of chances to be an impact player in the women"s division.

NFL Week 3 Recap: The Year of the Young QB - The New York Times

Philadelphia Eagles vs Pittsburgh Steelers Highlights & Recap

Benjamin, who missed last season due to injury, started the season well with 13 catches for 199 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first two games, with Newton regularly praising how much easier everything was with him around. That changed this week, as Benjamin was targeted just once by Newton and finished the day with zero catches. It was the first time in his career that he failed to get a catch, and the Vikings did not stop there, also holding Devin Funchess without a single reception.

Captain Munnerlyn, a defensive back for the Vikings, told reporters after the game that the shutout was by design.

We just knew where Benjamin was the whole time, he said. Funchess, we werent worried about him. It was Kelvin Benjamin.

Munnerlyn went as far as to say the team was not worried about Funchess, saying hes not that good.

The loss ended a 14-game home winning streak by the Panthers.

Rams 37, Buccaneers 32: Turns out the offensively challenged Los Angeles Rams are capable of getting the ball in the end zone. Case Keenum threw for the teams first touchdown since relocating back to Los Angeles, and Todd Gurley rushed for two more scores Sunday in a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Rams (2-1), who did not have TD in the first two games of the season, also scored on Ethan Westbrooks 77-yard fumble return and Tavon Austins 43-yard reception in the fourth quarter before thunder and lightning caused a 69-minute weather delay with two minutes remaining.

Colts 26, Chargers 22: There is still plenty to be worried about in Indianapolis, with Andrew Luck continuing to struggle with turnovers and inconsistency for the Colts, but the team finally got its first win of the season. A 63-yard catch-and-run by T.Y. Hilton in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter completed the Colts comeback, and the teams defense forced a fumble to seal the victory.

With the win by Indianapolis, the only winless teams left are Cleveland, Jacksonville, Chicago and New Orleans, but the Bears and Saints have yet to play this week.

Redskins 29, Giants 27: It was never going to be easy. The Giants defense knew it. They knew it when the linebacker Keegan Robinson stood during a meeting Friday morning to remind his teammates that the winless Washington Redskins were especially dangerous.

Its like a trap game, Robinson told them. This team is desperate.

But with an opportunity to bury their rivals deeper in the N.F.C. East division, at home on a crisp and sunny afternoon, the Giants defense did not heed its own warnings, falling, 29-27, at MetLife Stadium. Heres how the Redskins won.

Chiefs 24, Jets 3: The play that encapsulated the Chiefs demolition of the Jets on Sunday was not the first turnover they forced. Or the second. Or the third. Or the fourth. Or the fifth. Or the sixth. Or the seventh. Or even the eighth.

Rather, it was a long third-quarter gain by the Kansas Citys superlative tight end, Travis Kelce, who caught a pass over the middle, sprinted across the field and at the end of his run administered a blow to Jets safety Marcus Gilchrist that was less stiff arm than ultimate fighting move. Instead of purely shoving Gilchrist, Kelce appeared to lift him with his right hand, pushing him back five yards.

The Chiefs bullied the Jets throughout the game, taking advantage of a team that was too slow, too clumsy and too challenged by the task of making sensible decisions or holding onto the ball to bother trying to assert itself as a contender in the A.F.C.

Dolphins 30, Browns 24: Signed by the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, Cody Parkey came out to kick what would have been a 46-yard game-winning field goal in the closing seconds of a hard-fought game against the Miami Dolphins. On a tough day in which he had already missed two other field goal attempts, Parkeys kick sailed wide-left and forced overtime.

For the Browns, who lost Robert Griffin III to injury in Week 1, and choked away a 20-point first quarter lead against Baltimore in Week 2, overtime had to feel like a foregone conclusion. And on Miamis second possession of overtime, Jay Ajayi confirmed those fears, breaking free for an 11-yard touchdown run that gave the Dolphins a 30-24 victory and dropped Clevelands record to 0-3.

Ravens 19, Jaguars 17: Justin Tucker kicked his fourth field goal, a 54-yarder, with 1 minute 2 seconds left for a road victory that kept the Baltimore Ravens undefeated and dropped the Jacksonville Jaguars to 0-3.

Packers 34, Lions 27: Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes all in the first half and the Packers withstood a rally from the Lions to win at home.

Raiders 17, Titans 10: The Oakland Raiders beat the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, getting three turnovers and a sack from their maligned defense.

Russell Wilson Injured in Seahawks Victory

Russell Wilson threw for 243 yards and a touchdown before suffering a left knee injury as the Seattle Seahawks rolled to a 37-18 rout of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Wilson was injured with about 10 minutes to go in the third quarter getting pulled down awkwardly on a sack by San Franciscos Eli Harold. Harold was called for a horse collar penalty, but the bigger concern was how he fell on Wilsons left leg.

Wilson stayed down on the field for a few moments before walking off. Wilson missed the first play of his career due to injury, but returned to throw one more pass. The completion led to the third of Steven Hauschkas three field goals for a 27-3 lead and after that Wilsons day was done. Read more about Wilsons injury.

No National Anthem Protests on Field in CharlottePhoto Panthers quarterback Cam Newton wore a shirt with a Martin Luther King Jr. quotation during pregame warm-ups. Credit Mike McCarn/Associated Press

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton did not kneel during the national anthem on Sunday, but he addressed the unrest in Charlotte, N.C., by wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a quotation from Martin Luther King Jr.

Newton, who has avoided making race a part of his personal narrative, surprised some by taking time during the week to address Tuesdays shooting in Charlotte, which occurred close to the Panthers stadium. Many thought Newton would choose to take a knee during the national anthem, similar to the protests of Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers; instead, Newton wore a black T-shirt during warm-ups that read, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

While Newton did not kneel during the anthem, his teammate Marcus Ball stood with his arm extended and his index finger raised, and a group of protesters outside the stadium knelt.

Elsewhere in the league, a growing number of players knelt or raised their fists during the anthem, including four players from the Washington Redskins.

Last week, DeSean Jackson, who was one of the Redskins players raising his fist, published a photo of Terrence Crutcher, a black man shot by the police in Tulsa, Okla., on his Instagram feed with a caption that read in part, Us as black People are a threat , so jus take our lives smh the system been set up for us not to live and make it thru all this.

Fantasy Football: Buffalo Bills" Sammy Watkins ruled OUT vs. Arizona Cardinals

Buffalo Bills 2015-2016 Highlights

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- If you own Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins, it could be good news that the team is benching him Sunday.

Watkins has struggled to produce through two games, dealing with a lingering foot injury.

The third-year wide receiver has the ability to break out, scoring nine touchdowns in 13 game last season, but hasn"t sniffed the end zone so far in 2016.

The Bills are expected to feature Watkins more in its offense, following the firing of offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Watkins has just six catches for 63 yards this season.

Before the season, Watkins was seen as a WR2 with WR1 upside. Although his talent hasn"t been challenged, his health continues to shackle him from being an elite player at the position. I think this was a good move for the Bills, who started Watkins on a short week in its Thursday Night Football loss to the New York Jets. Giving Watkins some much needed rest might just be all he needs to get back to his imposing Sunday persona and production.

Watkins tweeted Saturday night that he was "ready to go out there and compete at the highest level," but later deleted the message.

CBS Sports" Jason La Canfora reported Saturday that the Bills were "holding out hope" for Watkins to suit up.

I don"t think any of Watkins" fill-ins are start worthy, going up against the Cardinals" top corner Patrick Peterson and a talented secondary. Marquis Goodwin is expected to start opposite of Robert Woods as Tyrod Taylor"s top targets.

Fantasy injury updates for Sammy Watkins, Brandon Marshall, Delanie Walker, more for Week 3

Top 10 Brandon Marshall Plays of 2015 | NFL

Updated at 11:34 a.m. ET

The injury updates just keeping piling up. A bunch of stars have already been ruled "out" (Arian Foster, Jonathan Stewart, Doug Martin) or "doubtful" (Thomas Rawls, Jamaal Charles,Antonio Gates), but there are still a host of key "questionable" players (Brandon Marshall, Sammy Watkins, Delanie Walker, Alshon Jeffery, Julio Jones, Willie Snead) who are coming up often in start-sit questions and having a big effect on Week 3 fantasy football rankings.

Whether you"re putting together a daily fantasy football lineup or just looking for the latest news for your standard league, we"re here to help.

Follow us at@SN_Fantasy for more updates, and check out our Facebook Live show starting at 11 am ET for your chance to ask lineup questions!

WEEK 3RANKINGS:Quarterback|Running back| Wide receiver| Tight end| Defense| Kicker

Is Brandon Marshall playing in Week 3?

Although Marshall gutted it out after injuring his knee in Week 2, his status for Week 3 is very much in question. The latest on Marshall, who has a foot injury in addition to his ailing knee, is that he is expected to play, but he might be on a snap count.but the man himself hasn"t had great things to say about his condition this week.

As we said earlier in the week, it"s tough to sit Marshallin standard leagues if he plays, but he"s a huge risk in DFS cash games. It"s not a bad idea to get a share of him in a GPP since others might be scared off, but clearly expectations should be lowered. We like Quincy Enunwaas a sleeper against the Chiefsregardless of Marshall"s status.

Sammy Watkins injury update

On Saturday,Watkins tweeted that he"s "ready to go out there and compete...", but on Sunday morning, Adam Schefter reported that Watkins will not play against the Cardinals.

Will Delanie Walker play?

UPDATE:Walker is INACTIVE.

Walker (hamstring) will be a game-time decision after doing little in practice this week, and there"s some worry he"ll be limited even if he"s active.

It"s tough for Walker owners to bench him if he"s playing given the dearth of worthwhile TE options. If you"re looking for other potential options, check out our TE rankings.

WEEK 3DFS: FD cash lineup |DK cash| FD tournament | DK tournament |Values

Doug Baldin, Tyler Lockett injury updates

Baldwin (knee) and Lockett (knee) both practiced fully on Thursday and are virtuallocks to play against the 49ers.

Rashad Jennings not expected to play

Jennings (thumb) was orginally expected to give it a go this week, but his injured thumb must be making things too uncomfortable for him. He"s now expected to sit out Sunday"s game against the Redskins.

This is big news for Shane Vereen, who figures to operate as the Giants featured back.

Will Alshon Jeffery play on Sunday night?

You have to take any injury seriously when it comes to Jeffery, but the fact he practiced on Friday is a good sign and reports on Sunday suggeset he"ll play.Jeffery has been dealing with knee soreness all week, and given that the Bears play on Sunday night, his owners should be ready with a backup just in case.

The most obvious (available) candidates from the primetime games areCole Beasely, Terrance Williams, andEddie Royal.

Julio Jones injury status

Jones (calf) is "questionable" for Monday night"s game against New Orleans, but the star receiver has put to rest any doubts about his availability, saying "I will play."

Jones is our top-ranked WR this week.

WEEK 3RANKINGS:Quarterback|Running back| Wide receiver| Tight end| Defense| Kicker

Is Willie Snead playing on Monday night?

Snead (toe) appears to be a true game-time decisions heading into Monday night"s game, so if you don"t have another alternative from that game, it"s best to leave Snead on your bench.

If Snead is out, Michael Thomas would get a nice bump in value.
