Steve Bannon: the alt-right media baron who has the ear of the President-elect

Donald Trump’s Appointing Steve Bannon As Chief Strategist Courts Controversy | TODAY

Steve Bannon, the Breitbart boss and Trump campaign CEO, runs a website that filters so-called alt-right, white nationalist views into the mainstream. He has been accused of racism and anti-Semitism. And now, as the newly appointed chief strategist and senior counselor to the President-elect, his opinions will be whispered into the ear of the leader of the free world.

A former US Navy officer, Harvard business school graduate, Goldman Sachs investment banker and Hollywood producer, Mr Bannon started his fourth or fifth career as a right-wing provocateur by releasing a handful of polemic documentaries. He became executive chairman of Breitbart News in 2012, a job he will quit to take up his new post in the Trump White House.

The ultra-conservative site is known for such liberal-baiting headlines as Would you rather your child had feminism or cancer? and Birth control makes women unattractive and crazy. It has described the confederate flag as a symbol of a glorious heritage and accused President Obama of crying phony fascist tears over the children killed in a mass shooting.

In 1996, Mr Bannon was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence and battery after an incident involving his ex-wife. The case was dismissed when prosecutors were unable to contact her. A decade later, in a 2007 court filing, the same ex-wife accused him of making anti-Semitic comments about a private school to which the couple planned to send their daughters.

As they discussed the Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles, she claimed, Mr Bannon went on to say the biggest problem he had with Archer is the number of Jews that attend. He said that he doesnt like Jews and that he doesnt like the way they raise their kids to be whiny brats and that he didnt want the girls going to school with Jews.

Mr Bannon pleaded not guilty to the domestic violence charges. The couple ultimately did send their daughters to Archer, and, after the court documents emerged this year, he denied the whiny brats conversation had ever taken place. Many, however, have found some of his on-the-record remarks plenty offensive enough.

John Weaver, the chief strategist for Mr Trump"s former Republican primary rival, Ohio Governor John Kasich, was among those who expressed dismay and revulsion at Mr Bannon"s appointment to a White House role, describing him in a tweet as a "racist" and "anti-Semite".

In 2010, in an interview to promote a film about right-wing female firebrands such as Sarah Palin and Ann Coulter, Mr Bannon said their success undermined the progressive narrative, explaining: Thats one of the unintended consequences of the womens liberation movement that, in fact, the women that would lead this country would be feminine, they would be pro-family, they would have husbands, they would love their children. They wouldn"t be a bunch of dykes.

Now 62, Mr Bannon has made a habit of antagonising the Republican establishment as much as he does the liberal left. At a conservative gathering in 2013, he reportedly called for a populist uprising within the GOP. Its going to be an insurgent, centre-right populist movement that is virulently anti-establishment, and its going to continue to hammer both the progressive left and the institutional Republican Party, he said.

He was, it now appears, describing the Trump campaign. It is perhaps no coincidence that Mr Trump has also been accused of anti-Semitism. In the final days of the election, the Trump campaign released an ad that contained several arguably anti-Semitic tropes, including claims of a global conspiracy and images of the Jewish financiers George Soros and Lloyd Blankfein. In a 60 minutes interview aired on Sunday evening, Trump called on his supporters to "stop" harassing minorities, saying "don"t do it. That"s terrible." But the news of Mr Bannon"s appointment, which broke on the same night, will do little to calm fears.

In a recent profile of Mr Bannon for The Atlantic, Conor Freidersdorf compared Mr Bannon to a Jacobin, the most ruthless and radical group involved in the French Revolution. Trump is not his idea of a good president of the United States, Mr Freidersdorf wrote. Trump is his guillotine.

Speaking to Bloomberg on Thursday, Mr Bannon resisted such a comparison. This is not the French Revolution, he said. They destroyed the basic institutions of society and changed their form of government. What Trump represents is a restoration a restoration of true American capitalism. The president-elect, he added, is the leader of a populist uprising.

Leon Russell, Hit Maker and Musicians" Musician, Dies at 74

Leon Russell dead at 74

The music Mr. Russell made on his own put a scruffy, casual surface on rich musical hybrids, interweaving soul, country, blues, jazz, gospel, pop and classical music. Like Willie Nelson, who collaborated with him, and Ray Charles, whose 1993 recording of A Song for You won a Grammy Award, Mr. Russell made a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

After his popularity had peaked in the 1970s, he shied away from self-promotion and largely set aside rock, though he kept performing. But he was prized as a musicians musician, collaborating with Elvis Costello and Elton John, among others. In 2011, after making a duet album with Mr. John, The Union, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the ceremony, Mr. John called him the master of space and time and added, He sang, he wrote and he played just how I wanted to do it.

Leon Russell was born Claude Russell Bridges in Lawton, Okla., on April 2, 1942. An injury to his upper vertebrae at birth caused a slight paralysis on his right side that would shape his music: A resulting delayed reaction time in his right hand forced him to think ahead about what it would play. It gave me a very strong sense of duality, he said last year in a Public Radio International interview.

He started classical piano lessons when he was 4, played baritone horn in his high school marching band and also learned trumpet. At 14 he started gigging in Oklahoma; since it was a dry state at the time, he could play clubs without being old enough to drink. Soon after he graduated from high school, Jerry Lee Lewis hired him and his band to back him on tour for two months.

He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950s and found club work and then studio work; he learned to play guitar, and he began calling himself Leon Russell, taking the name Leon from a friend who had lent him an ID so he could play California club dates while underage.

His music-making drew on both his classical training and his Southern roots, and he played everything from standards to surf-rock, from million-sellers to pop throwaways. He was glimpsed on television as a member of the Shindogs, the house band for the prime-time rock show Shindig! in the mid-1960s, and was in the house band for the 1964 concert film, The T.A.M.I. Show.

In 1967, he built a home studio and began working with the guitarist Marc Benno as the Asylum Choir, which released its debut album in 1968. He also started a record label, Shelter, in 1969 with the producer Denny Cordell. Mr. Russell drew more recognition as a co-producer, arranger and musician on Mr. Cockers second album, Joe Cocker!, which included Mr. Russells song Delta Lady.

When Mr. Cockers Grease Band fell apart days before an American tour, Mr. Russell assembled Mad Dogs & Englishmen, a big, boisterous band that included three drummers and a 10-member choir. Its 1970 double live album and a tour film became a showcase for Mr. Russell as well as for Mr. Cocker; the album reached No. 2 on the Billboard album chart.

Mr. Russell also released his first solo album in 1970; it included A Song for You and had studio appearances from Mr. Cocker, Eric Clapton, two members of the Beatles and three from the Rolling Stones. But Mr. Russells second album, Leon Russell and the Shelter People, fared better commercially: It reached No. 17 on the Billboard chart.

Mr. Russell had his widest visibility as the 1970s began. He played the Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden with Mr. Harrison, Bob Dylan and Mr. Clapton; he produced and played on Mr. Dylans songs When I Paint My Masterpiece and Watching the River Flow. He toured with the Rolling Stones and with his own band.

His third album, Carney, went to No. 2 with the hit Tight Rope; it also featured his own version of This Masquerade. In 1973, his Leon Live album reached the Top 10, and he recorded his first album of country songs under the pseudonym Hank Wilson. The fledgling Gap Band, also from Oklahoma, backed Mr. Russell in 1974 on his album Stop All That Jazz. His 1975 album Will o the Wisp included what would be his last Top 20 pop hit, Lady Blue.

But he continued to work. He made duet albums with his wife at the time, Mary Russell (formerly Mary McCreary). And he collaborated with Mr. Nelson in 1979 on One for the Road, a double LP of pop and country standards. It sold half a million copies.

That same year he married Janet Lee Constantine, who survives him, as do six children: Blue, Teddy Jack, Tina Rose, Sugaree, Honey and Coco.

Mr. Russell delved into various idioms over the next decades, mostly recording for independent labels. He toured and recorded with the New Grass Revival, adding his piano and voice to their string-band lineup. He made more country albums as Hank Wilson. He recorded blues, Christmas songs, gospel songs and instrumentals.

In 1992, the songwriter and pianist Bruce Hornsby, who had long cited Mr. Russells influence, sought to rejuvenate Mr. Russells rock career by producing the album Anything Can Happen, but it drew little notice. Mr. Russell continued to tour for die-hard fans, who called themselves Leon Lifers.

A call in 2009 from Mr. John, whom Mr. Russell had supported in the early 1970s, led to the making of The Union which also had guest appearances by Neil Young and Brian Wilson and a 10-date tour together in 2010. Mr. Russell also sat in on Mr. Costellos 2010 album, National Ransom. Then he bought a new bus and returned to the road, on his own.

Correction: November 13, 2016

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this obituary misstated the day Mr. Russell died. It was Sunday, not Saturday. It also misstated the year of his birth. It is 1942, not 1941.

WWE Rumors: Linda McMahon Up For Role In Donald Trump"s Cabinet

Who will be in Donald Trump"s Cabinet?. #TrumpCabinet @henican

Over the weekend, a British tabloid released a story that claimed that President-Elect Donald Trump was considering a cabinet position for former WWE executive Linda McMahon. No one really took it seriously considering the source but now a more legitimate source is claiming that the report was based in truth.

NBC Connecticut reported that Donald Trump actually has Linda McMahon as one of the names being considered for the position of Secretary of Commerce. Linda McMahon has little experience in politics although she did run for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010.

This announcement comes after it was revealed that Linda McMahon was one of the biggest donors to the super PAC that supported the Presidential run of Donald Trump. The Washington Post reported that Linda McMahon and her husband Vince McMahon donated $6 million to the super PAC.

The super PAC raised a total of $18 million, which makes the WWE couple one of the biggest donors to Trumps campaign, giving almost one-third of the total money raised. That also might explain why Donald Trump has her on his short list for the Secretary of Commerce. Linda McMahon talked about their close friendship with Donald Trump.

Woo hoo! Toel @hansdavidian https://t.co/CDhq62UDcz

Om Jed Revolutia (@revolutia) November 14, 2016

Once youre his friend, he is loyal to the end. Hes an incredibly loyal, loyal friend.

The McMahon family and the WWE have a long history with Donald Trump. Donald Trump hosted WrestleMania IV and WrestleMania V at his own Trump Plaza back in the 80s. Those events saw a world title tournament at one and the confrontation between the Mega Powers of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage at the other.

WSJ: Obama plans to "spend more time" with Trump "than presidents typically do" because Trump doesn"t know things. https://t.co/lr4qkqlsFY

Daniel Dale (@ddale8) November 14, 2016

Donald Trump returned years later to feud with Vince McMahon, including a fictional hostile takeover of the WWE by Trump. The two ended up facing off as managers at a WrestleMania event, where Trumps man Bobby Lashley beat McMahons man Umaga and McMahon ended up shaved bald.

Donald Trump also was enshrined into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. Since McMahon himself inducted Trump. Now, it might be time that Donald Trump repaid the favor by giving Linda McMahon this new job in his cabinet.

RELATED WWE REPORTS BY THE INQUISITR

Linda McMahon served in 2009 on the Connecticut Board of Education but then resigned when they passed a rule that said she couldnt take part in political activities. Linda then ran for the U.S. Senate seat in 2010, losing to Democrat candidate Richard Blumenthal. Linda McMahon spent $50 million of her own money running for the Senate seat. She ran for the other seat in 2012 and lost again.

Now, after spending so much money to try to get into politics, it might be the friendship between Linda McMahon and Donald Trump, as well as $6 million more spent to help him get elected, that will get her a position in the government.

The United States Secretary of Commerce is a position that concerns itself with the promotion of American businesses and industries. Their goal is to promote, develop, and foster both domestic and foreign commerce. Linda McMahon has experience with running the WWE but no other political experience for the position.

Linda McMahon was put into an interesting position when Donald Trump began to blast into women on Twitter and was deemed misogynistic. McMahon said that he stepped over the line but then excused him by saying he hits back hard when people strike at him first. The WWE supports anti-bullying campaigns which left a lot of questions to be answered when Linda supported the Donald Trump campaign.

Panthers vs. Broncos: Score and Twitter Reaction for Thursday Night Football

Derek Carr & Latavius Murray Come Up Big on Raiders TD Drive! | Broncos vs. Raiders | NFL

Seven months after the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 in decisive fashion, the Carolina Panthers failed to exact revenge. Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field-goal attempt with nine seconds remaining that would have won Thursday night"s contest at Sports Authority Field, and the Broncos escaped with a 21-20 victory.

The Broncos moved to 1-0 after Cam Newton and the Pantherswho have now lost as many games as they did all of last seasoncrept into Denver territory late and made the defending champions sweat things out.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, the Broncos have won five straight season openers. They"re also 29-4 at home since 2012tied with the New England Patriots for the best mark during that span.

While the altitude figured to help Gano with the game on the line, he hasn"t thrived from distance of late. Specifically, Gano has missed four of his last seven from at least 50 yards out, per ESPN Stats & Info.

While the Broncos offense wasn"t high-powered, it had enough balance to get past a stout Panthers defense.

Broncos running back C.J. Anderson shouldered a significant load and finished with 20 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown to go with four catches, 47 receiving yards and a score.

And considering Denver quarterback Trevor Siemian hadn"t thrown a pass in regular-season action entering the night, heappeared relatively poised in the pocket as he finished with 178 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on 18-of-26 passing.

The former Northwestern Wildcats signal-caller led the Broncos deep into Panthers territory on the team"s first two possessions, but both ended with turnovers. Rookie running back Devontae Booker squandered a strong opening drive with a fumble on the first carry of his career, and Siemian botched a bubble screen the next time down that linebacker Thomas Davis tipped and picked off.

Despite those hiccups, the Broncos ate up chunks of yards against a Panthers defense that started two rookie cornerbacks in JamesBradberry and Daryl Worley.

And as impressive as Siemian was in his first extended action as a pro, Newton (18-of-33, 194 yards, one touchdown, one interception) was on another plane over the first 30 minutes.

An MVP-caliber one, to be specific.

Newton not only played pitch and catch with Kelvin Benjamin throughout the first half, but he gashed the Broncos defense with his legs on designed runs and impressive escapes from pressure outside the tackle box. All told, Newton finished with 11 carries for 54 yards.

After Newton and Benjamin hooked up for the game"s first score on a 14-yard touchdown pass, the reigning MVP burned past a pair of Broncos defenders to help put the Panthers up 14-7, as the NFL documented on Twitter:

NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was in awe of Newton"s athleticism:

According to the Associated Press" Steve Reed, Newton"s 44th career scoring scamper thrust him past Steve Young and into the No. 1 spot on the NFL"s all-time rushing touchdown list among quarterbacks.

However, the Panthers had trouble maintaining their electric offensive ways throughout the third quarterespecially after Newton suffered an apparent lower right leg injury after DeMarcus Ware sacked him.

Newton returned after limping around the sideline, and an uneventful three-and-out preceded a remarkable interception by Broncos cornerback Chris Harris, as shown by the team"s official Twitter account:

That turnover put the Broncos deep in Panthers territory, and Anderson"s second score helped put the Broncos up 21-17 as Carolina scrambled for the offensive continuity that kept it ahead throughout the first half.

An illegal hands-to-the-face call on Harris appeared to save the Panthers when they stared at 4th-and-21 with two minutes to go, but Gano couldn"t capitalize on the ground Newton made up as he absorbed vicious shot after vicious shot to put his team in a position to win on the road.

The Panthers will now have nine days off before they return home to Bank of America Stadium and aim at a move to 1-1 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Denver, meanwhile, will use part of its long week to bask in the glow of Thursday night"s win before the Indianapolis Colts come to town Sept. 18 for what figures to be a game of contrasting styles on both sides of the ball.

"We made too many mistakes coaching and playing," Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said, per the Denver Post"s Nicki Jhabvala. "We survived tonight."

However, Kubiak was proud of his team"s performance over the game"s final 30 minutes.

"I think we always play hard, but we just played much better in the second half," he said, per Jhabvala.

Kubiak also took note of his new quarterback"s impressive debut against the defending NFC champions.

"He"s gonna make mistakes," he said, according to Jhabvala. "But, man, he has poise."

As for the Panthers, tight end Greg Olsen was among those displeased with the way Broncos defenders repeatedly crunched Newton.

"Treat him like a quarterback," he said, per NFL Network"s Omar Ruiz. "I know he"s the biggest guy on the field, but he"s still a QB."

"It was a very physical game," Newton said, according to Max Henson of the team"s official website. "It"s not my job to question the officials. But it"s not fun getting hit in the head."

Elsewhere, USA Today"s Tom Pelissero caught up with Broncos safety Darian Stewartwho drilled Newton with a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter:

As for Gano, the Panthers kicker tried to maintain a positive approach in advance of next week"s game against the 49ers.

"It"s not a good feeling," he said of the missed kick, according toHenson. "Wish I could have it back. But I just have to move on to the next kick."

Local Navy veteran killed in crash on Veterans Day

History of the Holidays: History of Veterans Day | History

HOUSTON (KTRK) --

A family is grieving the loss of Adrian Herrera, 31, who died in a Gulf Freeway crash in uniform Friday while he celebrated Veterans Day.

Carlos and Olivia Herrera describe their son as dedicated to his family, friends and country saying he knew he wanted to join the military since he was in elementary school.

"I think he started going down to the recruiting office when he was 13 or 14 trying to join," Olivia said.

Adrian served three tours in Iraq with the U.S. Navy and was active in the VFW when he came home a few years ago.

"Whenever Veterans Day would come, he would get dressed and go see his friends, go see the VFW guys," Carlos said.

That"s why Friday, his family says he was in uniform driving when he took a curve too fast and crashed.

Police came to tell his family what happened.

"We opened the door for them, and as a mom, I knew. I saw the look on their face and I was praying that"s not what they were going to say to me," Olivia said.

The family said the outpouring of support from friends and fellow veterans has been comforting.

"He was coming out of his shell. We didn"t realize how many friends he had. It"s unbelievable," Olivia said.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
