Luke Kuechly"s injury casts shadow over Panthers" big win

Panthers Luke Kuechly Injury, Starts a crying God bless thanks for watching Prayers up

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A mixture of tears and sweat poured down the face of Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly as he was carted off the field with a potential concussion late in the fourth quarter of Thursday nights win against New Orleans.

He looked dazed.

Scared.

Teammates looked the same as they watched the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year disappear into the tunnel at Bank of America Stadium, struggling to breathe as he fought back emotion.

"You could see it on his face that he was pretty visibly upset," tight end Greg Olsen said after Carolinas 23-20 victory.

The season that began with the fear of being defined by the "Super Bowl hangover" all of a sudden is being defined by head injuries.

Kuechly, who is in the concussion protocol, could be the sixth Carolina player to suffer a concussion this season. Left tackle Michael Oher has missed seven games with one and there is no sign of when he will return.

Quarterback Cam Newton missed a Week 5 game against Tampa Bay. Backup safety and special teams ace Colin Jones has missed the past two games. Outside linebacker A.J. Klein missed Thursdays game.

Cornerback Daryl Worley might have missed a game with one had Carolina not had a bye the week after he suffered his in Week 6 in New Orleans.

Concussions are scary because so much is unknown about them. The Saints put starting cornerback P.J. Williams on injured reserve in September three days after he was carted off with a concussion.

Former Carolina middle linebacker Dan Morgan missed the final 15 games of the 2006 season with what was believed to be at least his fifth concussion.

Once youve had one concussion, according to medical experts, there is a higher risk that you will have another.

This would be Kuechlys second concussion in two years. He missed three games last season after suffering one late in the first quarter of the opener at Jacksonville.

Cornerback Kurt Coleman said the way Kuechly reacted when New Orleans running back Tim Hightower lowered his helmet into the middle linebackers facemask and chest was reminiscent of that hit.

Kuechly was hit so hard that he was pushed back into the path of outside linebacker Thomas Davis, whose helmet glanced off his teammates helmet.

It was such a somber sight as Kuechly laid motionless on the turf with team doctors evaluating him that Saints safety Roman Harper, who played for the Panthers in 2014 and "15, came to check on him.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees told Kuechly he was praying for him as the three-time Pro Bowl selection left the field.

"He is maybe, certainly one of the best football players Ive ever seen -- ever played against," Brees said.

That the Panthers hung on to win 23-20 to keep their slim playoff hopes alive at 4-6 with six games remaining seemed less significant because of what happened not only to Kuechly, but center Ryan Kalil (shoulder) and defensive end Mario Addison (foot).

Kalil and Addison left the game earlier with injuries and did not return. Their status for Carolina"s Nov. 27 game in Oakland remains uncertain.

But what is certain is its hard to imagine the Panthers making a playoff push without Kuechly. Hes had more tackles (693) than any NFL player since entering the league as a first-round pick out of Boston College in 2012.

He already had a season-high 14 tackles Thursday to give him a team-leading 102 this season before leaving the game.

If outside linebacker Davis is the heart of the defense, Kuechly is the soul.

His last words to teammates before leaving the field were to "keep fighting."

"Luke is a fighter," Coleman said. "Thats why we fight for each other."

This isnt to suggest the Panthers cant win without Kuechly. They beat Houston, New Orleans and Tampa Bay without him a year ago, with Klein taking over in the middle.

But with a young secondary, as much as it has improved during the past month, Carolina still needs Kuechlys experience and ability to make plays that others simply cant.

"Thats our leader, one of the key components of our team," fullback Mike Tolbert said.

The blank stare Kuechly had as he left the field wasnt much different than the look on the faces of many of his teammates in the locker room afterward. The next-man-up mantra was repeated throughout, but there is no next man on the roster as good as Kuechly.

Not even close.

Thats why the winning locker room didnt look much different than the losing locker room in terms of the mood.

"You just hope hes OK more than anything," Olsen said. "When he comes back is out the window."

Donald Trump Selects Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General

WASHINGTON President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Senator Jeff Sessions, a conservative from Alabama who became a close adviser after endorsing him early in his campaign, to be the attorney general of the United States, according to officials close to the transition.

Mr. Sessions was also under consideration for secretary of defense, creating debate within the Trump transition team over which job he should fill.

Graphic Donald Trump Is Choosing His Cabinet. Heres the Latest Shortlist.

A list of possibilities for key posts in the new administration.

Mr. Sessions, a former prosecutor elected to the Senate in 1996, serves on the Judiciary Committee and has opposed immigration reform as well as bipartisan proposals to cut mandatory minimum prison sentences.

While Mr. Sessions is well liked in the Senate, his record as United States attorney in Alabama in the 1980s is very likely to become an issue for Democrats and civil rights groups expected to give it close scrutiny.

While serving as a United States prosecutor in Alabama, Mr. Sessions was nominated in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan for a federal judgeship. But his nomination was rejected by the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee because of racially charged comments and actions. At that time, he was one of two judicial nominees whose selections were halted by the panel in nearly 50 years.

In testimony before the committee, former colleagues said that Mr. Sessions had referred to the N.A.A.C.P., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other civil rights groups as un-American and Communist-inspired. An African-American federal prosecutor then, Thomas H. Figures, said Mr. Sessions had referred to him as boy and testified that Mr. Sessions said the Ku Klux Klan was fine until I found out they smoked pot. Mr. Sessions dismissed that remark as a joke.

Mr. Sessions was also accused of speaking disparagingly of the Voting Rights Act and the stringent oversight it placed on Southern states.

Mr. Sessions, who was elected attorney general of Alabama in 1995, has long considered it a personal triumph that he was able to be elected to the Senate in 1997 and become a member of the panel that rejected his nomination to become a federal judge.

He looks me dead in my eyes, and he starts to turn and walk away as Im walking towards him, asking him, What did he see? How did he not call that? Youll see me on the video of me waving my hand across my face, going and circling my ear saying, Hey, you didnt see it? What? You cant hear me? Then I gave him a suggestion that he didnt like. He threw his flag while my back was turned to him As Im walking back to the huddle, now, he has the confidence to throw the flag while Im not looking, and that just got the temperature going even more. The "Blurred Lines" music video star previously went t*****s in a selfie with Kim Kardashian in March. She and the 36-year-old reality star shared the picture after Kardashian faced backlash for her n**e selfie.

"We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn"t mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality. #liberated @kimkardashian," Ratajkowski wrote at the time.

Ratajkowski voiced similar sentiments about women"s sexuality in September after Tim Gunn called her Harper"s Bazaar Icons party dress "appallingly vulgar." The form-fitting dress featured a plunging neckline and cutouts with a sheer overlay.

"Western men in 2016: Want to ban women abroad from voluntarily covering themselves at the beach," the star tweeted, referencing the burkini controversy. "Then want women to cover up their "vulgar" bodies at home."

"Who controls women"s bodies in 2016? It"s 2016. Why keep trying to dictate what women can wear?" she added.

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant captures NL MVP award

Crying Cubs Fan Ryan Slagle Meets Kris Bryant

Chicago Cubs slugger Kris Bryant has been voted the National League MVP, capping off a historic season for the 24-year-old star.

Bryant received 29 of a possible 30 first-place votes.

  • After making history with the Cubs this season, Kris Bryant added another honor by winning the National League MVP award.

  • Angels outfielder Mike Trout was named the American League MVP, his second career MVP award by the age of 25.

Washington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy was the runner-up. Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, who was the unanimous winner of the NL Rookie of the Year award on Monday, finished third.

"This year has certainly been one of the best years of my life," said Bryant, who is set to get married in January. "I mean, winning a World Series, now this. It"s just icing on the cake."

Voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America was completed by the start of the playoffs. The BBWAA has voted for the award since 1931.

Bryant was arguably the best offensive player on the best team in the game and showed exceptional defensive versatility by playing in both the infield and the outfield.

He hit .292 with 39 homers and 102 RBIs in just his second year in the majors, helping the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908.

Bryant led the National League with a 7.67 WAR and was the only NL player in the top 10 in that category. He also ranked third in the NL in home runs (39), fourth in OPS (.939) and sixth in RBIs (102).

The 2015 NL Rookie of the Year, Bryant also led the league in runs scored with 121.

"Kris is just an impressive young man in every aspect,"" Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said. "[He] is very mature, professional, light-hearted, but serious at the same time. He"s just kind of a dream player for any organization.""

Bryant becomes the Cubs" first MVP since Sammy Sosa won the award in 1998. The once-forlorn franchise enjoyed its best run in decades and also had two of the season"s top MVP candidates, with Bryant"s teammate, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, finishing fourth in the voting.

"If it wasn"t for Anthony and his protection and guidance, I wouldn"t have won this award," Bryant said. "I mean, he texted me, and I said the same thing to him. I said, "If it wasn"t for you, I wouldn"t have been able to do this.""

Bryant joins Dustin Pedroia (2007-08), Ryan Howard (2005-06) and Cal Ripken (1982-83) as the only players to win Rookie of the Year and MVP honors in consecutive seasons. Ichiro Suzuki (2001) and Fred Lynn (1975) are the only players to win the awards in the same year.

He was the unanimous NL Rookie of the Year after he hit .275 with 26 homers and 99 RBIs last season.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN"s Jesse Rogers contributed to this report.
