Permit pulled for Carrot River liquor store because MLA owns shares

Liquor store run

The Carrot River Inn is losing itspermit to operate a liquor store.

On Wednesday, it was announced the business was selected to operate a private liquor store in the town of Carrot River, located 290 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

However, Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshawowns shares in the business.

According to releases issued byBradshaw and from SLGA Minister Jeremy Harrison today, the government says it"s not appropriate for the MLA to own any part of a liquor store, and the permit will be pulled.

Bradshawsaidhe owns a 1.4 per cent stake in the Carrot River Inn, and he"s not involved in management and operations;nor was he involved in preparing the proposal for the liquor store permit, orawarding the permit to the group.

He said he didn"t make Harrison aware of his stake in the inn during the proposal process, andthat he shouldn"t own part of a business competing for a government contract.

"This was an oversight on my part but that"s not an excuse,"Bradshawsaid in a written release.

"I have directed SLGA to cancel the awarding of the retail store permit to the Carrot River Inn and to issue a new Request for Proposal for that permit," said Harrison.

12 TV shows to binge-watch this Thanksgiving weekend

Sassy Trump"s Thanksgiving Message

Thanksgiving is finally here, giving us all reason to reflect on what we should truly be thankful for: a fantastic year for television. Seriously. Many of us will be downing our turkey dinners with a side of drunken hilarity, family dysfunction, and tense political discussion. But when the plates clear and youre sinking into a food coma, rest assured that theres some great TV waiting to see you through the long weekend. Here are some recommendations for what to watch while you digest.

Looking for an escapeWestworld (HBO) John P. Johnson / HBO

Westworld is HBOs latest and greatest puzzlebox of a show. If youre not watching already, start now! Theres still time to be inevitably disappointed by a season finale that cant possibly satisfy all of our questions. Armed with an incredible cast and stacked high with mysteries, the show is the sci-fi slow burn that keeps you coming back, no matter how frustrated you are.

Best seen with: That relative who finally finished Lost and is looking for a new show to theorize about.

Stranger Things (Netflix) Netflix

Stranger Things took the entire summer by storm and remains a must-watch of 2016. The series follows the kids and adults of a small town as theyre dragged into the mysterious disappearance of local boy Will Byers. Its a weird, wonderful tribute to genre classics from the 70s and 80s that combines terrifying h**l-monsters with waffle-loving, telekinetic little girls.

Best seen with: Your geeky roommate who can always spot a Stephen King reference.

The Get Down (Netflix)

No one is going to lie to you here: The Get Down is a bit of a mess, which is a given considering Baz Luhrmanns output. But this series, which explores the birth of hip-hop in late-70s New York City, gels quickly into a moving and meaningful look into the lives of kids of color right on the cutting edge of a massive cultural moment. By the time the finale rolls around, youll be hooked.

Best seen with: Anyone who sat all the way through The Great Gatsby and said, You know, that wasnt all that bad.

Black Mirror (Netflix)

Black Mirror has quickly become the Twilight Zone of the smartphone era, honing in on the anxieties that come with consumer technology and social media. The new season, which debuted on Netflix recently, has often met and even exceeded the high bar the series set when it first premiered back in 2011. Worried about the dangers of VR or what might happen if you upload your dying mind to the cloud? This new season is for you.

Best seen with: Any of your friends looking for a reason to quit social media and hibernate for the winter.

Looking for new facesInsecure (HBO) InsecureHBO

Insecure could be described as Girls with black women, but that would miss the point. Issa Rae, with help from showrunner Prentice Penny, offers an insightful, earthy, and deeply funny look into life in Los Angeles and what it means to be an awkward 20-something living in that community. It might not be breaking much ground for cable dramedies, but that doesnt mean its not unique and worth the watch.

Best seen with: That cousin who loves Broad City, but needs something a little fresher.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is easily one of the best shows on television. Its funny, its diverse, it has a lot to say about how problematic romantic comedy narratives are, and its a musical. Underneath its love story is a heady meditation on how hard it is to find happiness these days. Watch this on the off chance that youre up to dancing off that stuffing.

Best seen with: Your college friend who loves making fun of Disney movies but still watches them constantly.

Atlanta (FX) FX Networks

Donald Glover has described his show Atlanta as Twin Peaks with rappers, and... hes not wrong. In addition to it being a love letter to the black experience in America, its also unabashedly weird and surprising. How many other shows would have a whole episode devoted to a fake interview show, complete with its own animated commercial breaks?

Best seen with: That one friend who loves trap music and Twin Peaks, obviously.

Luke Cage (Netflix)

Marvels latest show in its stable of superhero TV series, Luke Cage, has both stellar performances and a topical take on America today. Luke Cage, who made his debut in last years excellent Jessica Jones, is living in Harlem and laying low as one of New Yorks many superpowered heroes. But its not long before hes dragging into his neighborhoods underworld. This one is essential viewing.

Best seen with: Anyone who loves the idea of comic book superheroes meeting The Wire.

Looking to laugh while you cryBoJack Horseman (Netflix)

BoJack Horseman might be the reigning sadcom of the moment, and this season is relentless. BoJack, a washed up sitcom actor (and horse), has a real shot at winning an Oscar, but the industry may not be willing to let that happen. While hilarious, the series embraces sadness and darkness as essentials components of not just comedy but everyday life. If youre not up on this show yet, you really need to be.

Best seen with: The significant other who loves talking animals who talk about their existential crises.

The Good Place (Hulu)

What if, after your death, you find yourself in paradise only to learn that it was a clerical error that landed you there? And what if, it turns out, most people dont get to see paradise at all? What do you do? Thats the premise for The Good Place, a delightfully absurd take on the afterlife that envisions heaven as a place where youll never get hungover again. Its a fun show. Just dont think too deeply about how youd probably never make it there.

Best seen with: That aunt that found and then subsequently lost religion at some point in the last few years.

This Is Us (Hulu)

Few shows embrace the messiness of life quite like This Is Us. The show is full of flawed but basically good people finding struggling to get by and do right, even as theyre constantly being thrown curveballs like illness or the death of children. Its a heavy show, but its also amazing how often the show demands you laugh through the tears. Check this out.

Best seen with: Your tough grandmother whos seen some real s**t in her life.

Search Party (TBS / Amazon)

Millennials are jerks, but that doesnt mean we cant find the little moments where were forced to care about one another. Search Party, starring Arrested Developments Alia Shawkat, follows Dory as she finds herself hunting for an old college acquaintance who has gone missing. Surrounded by friends who are more content to post on Twitter about the disappearance, the show confronts us with how disconnected from one another our technology can make us.

Best seen with: Yourself, while you think about your loved ones.

US|Nikki Haley"s Path: From Daughter of Immigrants to Trump"s Pick for UN

Trump"s diplomatic choice: Who is Nikki Haley?

Little is known about how Ms. Haley views Americas role in the world. But an equally important mystery is what her clout might be in the Trump administration.

Has Mr. Trump placed her in a post he considers marginal? Or will Ms. Haley along with a still-to-be-named secretary of state be able to temper the more radical views of Mr. Trumps other aides?

Despite the unknowns, many diplomats, scholars and rights advocates who have been anxiously awaiting Mr. Trumps choices were relieved at the announcement. They saw in Ms. Haley, a daughter of Indian immigrants, someone unafraid to express her beliefs even if they differ from Mr. Trumps.

If confirmed, we hope she will raise that voice on behalf of the worlds most vulnerable people who suffer from hunger, violence and injustice around the world, the advocacy group Oxfam said in a statement.

Many diplomats said they saw Ms. Haley as something of an enigma, whose views on the world have not yet been publicized.

But her stance is public on a few issues including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, refugees, and reproductive rights and they offer a window into how she may carry out her role.

She signed state legislation to thwart a pro-Palestinian disinvestment campaign against Israel, known as Boycott, Divest, and Sanction, or B.D.S. which made Israel one of the first to welcome her nomination for the post.

Ms. Haley has expressed concern about the security checks in place for Syrian refugees resettled in her state, but she is not among those Republican governors who have sued the Obama administration to block resettlement.

She describes herself as pro-life and has supported legislation in her state to restrict abortion rights. That position raises questions about whether the United States would reimpose a funding ban on groups that promote family planning overseas, and to what extent the United States would undermine a key United Nations goal to advance sexual and reproductive rights.

The reaction from Republicans in South Carolinas congressional delegation on Wednesday demonstrated the broad appeal Ms. Haley has earned among conservatives statewide and in Washington. Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Mr. Trumps harshest critics in the past, praised the nomination, writing on Twitter that Ms. Haley would be a strong voice for UN reform and stand for American interests throughout the world.

But others tempered their admiration for Ms. Haley with concern about whether her public service credentials, which are limited to South Carolina government, would translate to the world stage.

My very practical reaction is that shed be the least experienced U.N. ambassador in the history of the country, said Bakari Sellers, a CNN commentator and a Democrat who befriended Ms. Haley when they served together in the State House of Representatives. You go from Samantha Power the current United Nations ambassador who was very well versed in foreign policy and our geopolitical relationships, to Nikki Haley, who hasnt been in that depth ever.

Ms. Haleys admirers note that she repeatedly traveled abroad as governor to promote the state as a desirable place for investment. Her highest-profile trip, perhaps, was a 2014 visit to India, the birthplace of her parents. Her husband, Michael, has served in Afghanistan as an officer in the South Carolina National Guard.

More generally, Ms. Haley has overcome concerns that she would be a one-dimensional insurgent outsider, similar to worries that dog Mr. Trump. Her 2010 campaign was given a major lift by an endorsement from former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the polarizing darling of the Tea Party movement. But Ms. Haley has forged a middle path that embraces the conciliatory racial attitudes favored by the left and the business-friendly ethos of the right.

This balancing act faced perhaps its greatest test in June 2015, after nine African-Americans were shot and killed at the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. The white supremacist charged in the massacre, Dylann S. Roof, had posed with the Confederate battle flag in pictures. And for years, blacks and liberals in South Carolina had pleaded with the conservatives who dominate the state government to take the flag down from a prominent spot it occupied in front of the State Capitol.

Ms. Haley, the first ethnic minority and first woman to be elected as the states governor, had previously sided with fellow Republicans, who argued that the flag was not a racist symbol.

But the Charleston massacre hit home personally. She had been a friend of State Senator Clementa C. Pinckney, a Democrat and pastor of the church, who was one of the dead. Ms. Haley had a change of heart.

I couldnt look my son or daughter in the face and justify that flag flying anymore, Ms. Haley told The New York Times in June 2015.

At her urging, and after much passionate debate, the State Legislature agreed to remove the flag.

Ms. Haley was born in the small city of Bamberg, S.C., to immigrants from Punjab State in India. She has said the locals in South Carolina were often unsure of her place in what is often a Southern binary of black versus white. When Ms. Haley was about 5, she and her sister entered a Little Miss Bamberg pageant where, traditionally, a black queen and a white queen were crowned.

The judges decided the sisters fit neither category, so they were disqualified.

From a young age, Ms. Haley worked for her familys clothing business, and she eventually received an accounting degree from Clemson University. She was elected to the State House in 2004.

In 2009, she declared she was running for governor and prevailed despite lingering biases. A Republican state senator at the time called her a raghead on a radio show. A Democratic state representative said that voters did not consider her a minority, but more of a nice conservative with a tan.

Ms. Haley, a nimble campaigner who is equally at home among C.E.O.s and denim-clad bikers, easily won re-election in 2014, arguing that her maintenance of South Carolinas anti-union, low-regulation atmosphere had been the key to an economic comeback. Under her leadership, the state continued looking beyond its boundaries, very often abroad, to attract new industries to replace a fading textile industry.

It is a record that might seem at odds with Mr. Trumps skepticism of global trade deals and his promise to subject imports from Mexico and China to steep tariffs.

But there are other areas of agreement. In 2014, Ms. Haley criticized federal plans that would force power plants to cut carbon emissions.

Also like Mr. Trump, Ms. Haley has weathered accusations of sexual impropriety without suffering at the polls. In her first run for governor, two Republican operatives made separate and unproven accusations that they had sexual encounters with her. She strongly denied the assertions.

A few years later, Ms. Haley was among those rumored as a potential running mate for Mitt Romney, then a Republican presidential candidate.

She said she could not do it because there was too much to be done at home in South Carolina. But she acknowledged that opportunities sometimes arose. Ive never been a planner, she said. I dont know whats next, and I love not thinking about it because the doors open at a certain time.

Ditto Pokemon GO update: Big surprise waiting for fans as Niantic expands nearby feature

Pokemon GO CATCHING DITTO + Ditto Gym Battle Transformation

Ditto has finally joined the other original Pokemon in the wild and can be caught by those who can track it down.

From what fans are reporting, normal low-level Pokemon have been spawning into Ditto just before getting caught, a great new tactic on Niantic"s part.

By making Ditto Pokemon GO available via common Pocket Monster catches, itll provide the perfect spur for those who havent gone out and caught a Rattata in a while.

Ditto appears to boast a high CP and is available in every region. This will come as a relief as some Pokemon have been made region-exclusive.

Fans were tipped off to the inclusion of Ditto last month, after dataminers discovered the move transform had been added to the popular mobile game.

It follows the Pokemon Go update that Niantic are set to rollout the revamped nearby feature to new areas.

After reviewing your feedback, we have made some changes to the Nearby feature we were originally testing in San Francisco, California, a statement from the development team explains.

We have changed the feature to only show the Nearby feature if a PokeStop is close to your location. In addition, we have also made changes to the way Sightings now works.

We will be expanding the ability for Trainers to test this updated version of the features and provide us with feedback.

Your feedback submitted to all of our official social media accounts and posted in other channels is important to us. We will continue to review community feedback and make changes if necessary.

Our first six months has been nothing short of exciting and your continued support has been inspiring. We have a lot of content, features, and functionality that we will be implementing over the coming months and years.

Our goal is to to always improve on existing features where we can while also releasing exciting new content and functionality.

Starting today, Trainers in the following areas will now be able to use the new Nearby and Sightings functionality:

  • United States of America: All states west of the Mississippi River (except Hawaii and Alaska)
  • Canada: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the western half of Ontario.
  • Australia: All states and territories

Use a 7-inch springform pan or an 81/2 -by-41/2 -inch loaf pan. Round springform pans fit in large round or oval slow cookers, while loaf pans fit in large, oval slow cookers.

Dont lift the lid while the cheesecake is baking. Check the progress at 21/2 hours, if not done replace lid quickly and continue cooking for 30 additional minutes.

When the cheesecake has finished baking, unplug the slow cooker and let the cheesecake cool inside the slow cooker with the lid on for an hour. Then carefully remove and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight before topping with the praline topping.

You will soon find baking cheesecakes in your slow cooker are easy, peasy. These are the perfect size for holiday gift giving too!

Gather your ingredients and don your apron. Ready, set, go!

Praline Pumpkin Cheesecake

Slow Cooker Size: 5 quarts or larger

Crust:

Nonstick cooking spray

1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Filling:

2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

3/4 cup pumpkin puree

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons heavy cream

Praline Topping:

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/3 cup chopped pecans, toasted

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray the bottom of 7-inch springform pan or 81/2 -inch x 41/2 -inch loaf pan with nonstick spray. Crumble a sheet of aluminum foil, about 24 inches long, into a thin strip, then form into a 7-inch ring. Place aluminum foil ring in the bottom of a large slow cooker.

In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar and stir to blend. Press the crumb mixture into the prepared pan, pressing it evenly over the bottom and about 1/2-inch up the sides. Bake in the oven for 5 to 7 minutes or until the crust is set. Let cool on a wire rack.

Make the filling: In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat together the cream cheese, sugar and brown sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the pumpkin. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the flour, cinnamon and heavy cream. Pour the filling over the cooled crust.

Place the springform pan or loaf pan on the aluminum foil ring in the slow cooker. Cover the slow cooker and bake on High for 21/2 to 3 hours or until set. Unplug slow cooker; do not remove cheesecake. Allow the cheesecake to stand in the covered slow cooker for 1 to 2 hours, then remove the cheesecake from the slow cooker and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Refrigerate cheesecake for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Make the Praline Topping: Place the butter in a glass, microwave safe bowl and microwave on high (100 percent) power for 30 to 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in the brown sugar. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir well. Continue to microwave 10 seconds or until the sugar is melted and mixture is bubbling and hot. Stir in the cream, blending well. Microwave on high for 10 seconds or until mixture bubbles and is hot. Stir until sauce is smooth. Stir in the vanilla and pecans. Cool topping about for 5 minutes. Spoon the warm praline topping over the cheesecake.

Makes 1 (7-inch) cheesecake.

Tips:

Leftover canned pumpkin? Refrigerate the pumpkin in a covered container for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to use, thaw the pumpkin overnight in the refrigerator, then stir well and use for another recipe.

Cheesecakes should be stored in the refrigerator until serving time and should not be allowed to sit at out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours.

Toasting pecans intensifies the flavor. To toast the pecans, spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes or until lightly toasted.
