Lakeville Motor Express in Roseville padlocks door; 95 workers shut out

Michał i Ludwik mieli wyjątkowo dużo szczęścia podczas szukania noclegu [Azja Express]

Lakeville Motor Express in Roseville abruptly padlocked its doors this week, locking out 95 truck drivers and dock workers.

Workers said they did not receive their paychecks on Wednesday.

The surprised workers, who are part of Teamsters Local 120, found themselves picketing outside the companys new sister location, Finish Line Express (FLE) in Maple Grove.

More than 30 workers on Wednesday picketed Finish Line Express, a business that union officials say is really the Lakeville Motor business, but now operating under a different name and location. Union officials said they will return to the picket line on Monday and remain there indefinitely.

In a letter to Teamsters spokesman Bill Wedebrand, Lakeville Motor owner and President Kevin P. Deming wrote: Due to heavy financial losses, I have decided that effective [Nov. 19] Lakeville Motor Express Inc. shall cease all operations, close its business office and terminate all employees. Lakeville is out of cash and has no reserves to pay any amounts owed to employees or vendors at this time.

Terminated workers said they have seen Lakeville Motors former supervisors and terminal managers working in the truck yard at the new Maple Grove location. They also said they saw Lakevilles trucks and freight at the new site.

Both companies specialize in less than truckload freight and had contracts with customers such as John Deere, U-Line, appliance makers and grocers, picketing workers said.

Lakeville Motor didnt close. The freight is still there. The trucks are still there. And the customers are still there. All they did was change the logo on the trucks and terminate its unionized drivers and dock workers without notice, said Virgil Christoffersen, the Teamsters business agent who represents the 95 employees who worked for Lakeville Motor Express.

Now they are saying they wont even pay their employees for work they had already done or benefits that have been accrued and are owed, he said.

No connection

FLE Vice President Mike Sanford maintained there is no shared ownership between Finish Line Express and Lakeville Motor Express. He said FLE went into business shortly after it incorporated in May 2016. The company has 17 trucks, he said.

We had nothing to do with the company closing, Sanford said. They asked us to pick up and deliver some freight. We dont do all of it. Were a small company trying to do a job.

Wedebrand said Sanford is one of several former executives with Lakeville Motor Express who are running the new trucking company.

Its the same management, same everything, Wedebrand said. Its an alter-ego company.

The union will file grievances against the companies with the National Labor Relations Board, said Tom Erickson, president of Teamsters Local 120. If what they did isnt illegal, it should be. Period. This is not right. The union will pursue all legal avenues available to stop this kind of business strategy from working.

The owners of Lakeville Motor Express did not return messages.

Workers owed thousands

Lakeville Motor truck driver Ryan Lang was supposed to receive his $3,010 paycheck via direct deposit the day before Thanksgiving. There was no deposit.

His boss called him at home Sunday, telling him not to come into work that night because Lakeville Motor Express had locked the gates and he was out of a job. A few days later, his boss was seen working at the Finish Line Express site in Maple Grove, Lang said.

Lang joined Lakeville Motor right out of high school and expected to one day retire from the company. Now, hes unsure how to make it to the end of the month.

Ive got my mortgage and two car payments and I owe money for my kids hockey. I dont know how I am going to pay for it all if I dont get my paycheck, Lang said. I was hoping to buy my kids Christmas presents on Black Friday, but I will not be able to do that because I dont have funds.

Lang and other picketing workers said they may not have been so upset if they had been given notice or offered the choice of working at the new Maple Grove location.

Instead we got nothing, he said. And Ive worked there for 17 years.

Monte Hanson, spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), said any employer laying off 100 workers must notify the state and give its workers 60 days notice. Employers with fewer than 100 workers are encouraged to comply with the spirit of the law, Hanson said.

Lakeville Motor Express did not file a WARN notice with the state, Hanson said. We have people from DEEDs Dislocated Worker Program who are reaching out to both the company and the workers to get more details about what happened and to offer DEEDs services.

Small Business Saturday 101: Event Tips from Business Owners

What day isSmall Business Saturday 2016? Luckily, itstays the same every year.

Small Business Saturday always takes place on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving Day, which is Nov. 26 this year. This means it takes place directly after Black Friday. The idea behind Small Business Saturday is that customers can support local businesses by shopping at them. This makes it the opposite of Black Friday, which focuses on large retailers.

If you didnt know what day is Small Business Saturday, dont feel bad. The whole event is fairly new and can easily get overshadowed by sale events taking place on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Small Business Saturday got its start in 2010. It was a promotion created byAmerican Express Company (NYSE:AXP) to promote small businesses. The first event mainly took place inRoslindale Village, Mass., on Nov. 27.

Before the first official event, Small Business Saturday was also used as a hashtag on social media websiteTwitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR). However, the use of this hashtag was similar to ones such as #tbt and #mondaymotivation.

Theres also a Small Business Saturday page onFacebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) to help people keep track of the shopping event. The page shares information about the event and also posts ideas for consumers that can help them support their local businesses. You can check the page out by following this link.

Now is some asks you What day is Small Business Saturday this year? You can give them an answer that should help them remember it in the future.

Ebron Says The Mayans Invented The NFL Standings

Week 10 Power Rankings | NFL Now

By: Will Burchfield@burchie_kid

Eric Ebron is known for his sometimes-offbeat commentary.

On Monday, in his first meeting with reporters since the Lions returned from their bye week, Ebron brought up the Mayans while talking about Detroits upcoming schedule.

We still gotta play Jacksonville, tough team. We gotta play Minnesota again coming off a short week, tough team. So were not taking anything for granted. Good for where we are, good for the standings, good for the people who invented it the Mayans, the whoever but we gotta do this, Ebron said.

Wait, the Mayans?

The Mayans invented everything. We took stuff from them, Ebron continued, adding that he learned more about the ancient civilization during an exotic vacation he took over the offseason. They were telling me all the stuff the Mayans done did. We stole everything from them.

It was the Lions who stole a win from the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, tying the game as time expiredand then winningin overtime. That victory, coupled with losses by the Vikings and the Green Bay Packers in back-to-back weeks, thrust the Lions into first place in the NFC North.

But Ebron said the teams mindset hasnt changed.

Just a few weeks ago, you guys were in here talking about, Were 1-3, where do we go from here? And now were sitting where were sitting and now you guys want to talk about first place. We just want to play football. Thats all were going to do, thats all we came here to do, Ebron said.

Throughout the season, and particularly of late, Jim Caldwell has stressed that the Lions arent worried about the teams around them.

We have a narrow focus, the coach likes to say.

Ebrons, in that case, is a bit wider.

Whos not going to look at the standings? Youre a football player. We all sat there and watched the Minnesota (game). I was tweeting about it, Ebron said, referring to the Vikings loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday. You know what Im saying?

We all know how it benefits us but were not worried about it. We dont care for it. Thankful for the Redskins, but we still gotta do our job at the end of the day. We still gotta win, we still gotta produce, we still gotta go out there and play football.

How can anyone committed to human rights mourn Fidel Castro - a man who killed and repressed his own people?

Cubans mourn Fidel Castro

I wonder how many of the people today lamenting the death of Fidel Castro are, like me, supporters of Amnesty International?

After all, admiration for Castro is common on the Left of politics, and the Left has an honourable tradition of supporting human rights.

I know some on the Right consider the term "human rights activist" as an insult, associating the term and the endeavour with daft ideology and politically-correct sanctimony. Not me. I"m a journalist and I"ve worked in countries where the basic rights that allow me to do my job are not always respected.

Separately, Hormel sold the unit that runs its Farmer John and Saag"s Specialty Meats operations to privately held meat processor Smithfield Foods for $145 million in cash.

Caterpillar Caterpillar"s outlook was revised to "negative" from "stable" by Standard & Poor"s, because of a continuing slump in commodities prices and a glut in the heavy equipment market.

Nike The athletic footwear and apparel maker responded to President-elect Donald Trump"s pledge to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership on day one of his presidency, telling CNBC that it is committed to fair and free trade and will continue to advocate for policies and programs that create new jobs and drive economic growth. Recap of the Developments

1. Earnings

SINA reported third-quarter 2016 non-GAAP earnings of 56 cents per share, up 43.6% year over year. Net revenue of $274.9 million topped the consensus mark of $255.3 million and increased 21.5% year over year. Advertising revenues moved up 21% year over year to $233.6 million. The upside was primarily driven by strength in advertising related to Weibo (WB). Weibo revenues surged 41.8% year over year to $176.9 million. Monthly active users went up 34% year over year to 297 million. Daily active users were 132 million at quarter-end, up 32%. The strong growth momentum of Weibo advertising was driven by increasing adoption of mobile devices (89% of MAUs were mobile users) and improved monetization. At present, SINA carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

GameStop"s third quarter fiscal 2016 adjusted earnings per share of 49 cents in the quarter beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate but revenues of $1,959.2 million missed the same. On a year-over-year basis, the metrics fell 9.3% and 2.8%, respectively, primarily due to weakness in sales of video game hardware and software. Management gave a bleak outlook for the fourth quarter, which comprises the very important holiday season. Management projected sales in the quarter to decline in the range of 5% to 10%. At present, GameStop carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).

Undoubtedly, AR/VR and AI are the next steps in technological innovation offering lucrative business opportunities. Per a CNBC report, Otto Berkes, a co-founder of Xbox is of the opinion that AI and VR will mark a new golden era for the gaming industry. Berkes was quoted by CNBC saying "One of the aspects of VR that has incredible potential is interaction and communication - interacting with characters that are both artificial and virtual, being able to blur distance and geography; you can be anywhere and literally in any time. We"re entering another golden age of interactive content development." Though the AR/ VR industry is still at a nascent stage, a recent IDC report estimates global revenues of the AR/VR market to grow at a CAGR of 181.3% from $5.2 billion in 2016 to over $162 billion in 2020.

A few days back, NetEase NTES launched its first VR game, Twilight Pioneers on Google"s VR platform, Daydream. Moreover, higher mobile advertising revenues were an added incentive. NetEase has announced a new $1 billion buyback program for its ADRs over a one-year time frame.

Glu Mobile was down 8.00% over the same time frame due to the underperformance of most of its releases. Its weak third-quarter results were somehow overshadowed by the announcement of a new CEO and acquisition of a majority stake in CrowdStar.
