David Letterman Interviews then Pranks Richard Simmons (7-4-1994)
Former fitness guru Richard Simmons was taken to a Los Angeles hospital Friday night after exhibiting bizarre behavior, celebrity gossip site TMZ says.
The Los Angeles Fire Department told Entertainment Tonight that it responded to a call at Simmons house and that one person was transported by ambulance to the hospital. LAFD did not say that it was Simmons.
Neither TMZ nor Entertainment Tonight knew if Simmons was still hospitalized.
This is just the latest odd event involving Simmons.
In March the New York Daily News wrote a lengthy article wondering why Simmons had disappeared from the public eye and said that some of his friends feared he was being held against his will at his Hollywood Hills mansion.
Friends told the Daily News that Simmons stopped returning calls and emails more than two years ago, which is out of character for him.
The 67-year-old Simmons quickly sought to dismiss the rumors that he was a captive in his own house.
I am not kidnapped, he told Entertainment Tonight. I am just in my house right now. No one should be worried about me.
Longtime Simmons spokesperson Tom Estey told USA Today at the time that Richard Simmons has been in the public eye for 40 years, and hes opted out. Its his right to do it. Thats the gods honest truth. Theres nothing more to it than that.
