USA vs Costa Rica 4-0 All Goals & Highlights (Copa America 2016)
Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports
The United States earned their first win of the Copa America Centenario with a 4-0 victory over CONCACAF foe Costa Rica.
Goals were scored by Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood, and Graham Zusi. Dempsey was a standout player in the match, scoring one goal and adding two assists. The goal was his 50th goal for the senior national team, putting him within striking distance of Landon Donovan"s record of 57 goals.
Brad Guzan, who plays his club soccer with English Championship club Aston Villa, was in goal for the shutout.
Here are the highlights via FOX Soccer:
Doug McIntyre of ESPN FC pointed to veteran leadership as the key point in the win:
For all the pre-match talk about the younger U.S. players -- specifically 25-year-old Darlington Nagbe and 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund wunderkind Christian Pulisic -- in the squad, grizzled World Cup vets Dempsey and Jones were the Americans" best players in the Windy City.
Dempsey, 33, took his high-stakes PK with confidence, sending Pemberton diving the wrong way for his 50th international goal, and "Deuce" was involved in just about every U.S. foray forward in the first half. Meantime, the 34-year-old Jones, who many U.S. fans (and more than a few media members) suggested earlier in the week should sit in favor of Nagbe, was the team"s best player.
The match was played at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.
The U.S."s next match is Saturday against Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They lost their first match of the Copa America to Colombia, 2-0.
