After a year away from football, running back Marshawn Lynch is coming out of retirement to play for the Oakland Raiders. Because there were years remaining on the contract extension Lynch signed with Seattle two years ago, the Seahawks still controlled Lynchs rights, so to facilitate Lynch returning to play with his hometown team, the Raiders and Seahawks will swap picks in the 2018 draft, the Raiders announced. The Raiders will receive Lynch and a sixth-round draft choice in 2018 in exchange for Oaklands fifth-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Lynch, who the Seahawks acquired in a trade with Buffalo in 2010, became a star and a fan favorite in Seattle, rushing for 1,200 or more yards and double-digit touchdowns for four straight seasons from 2011 to 2014. Lynch, who has rushed for 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns in his career, earned Pro-Bowl honors in four of his six seasons with the Seahawks and was a first-team All-Pro in 2012 and second-team All-Pro in 2014.
More than stats or awards, what most defined Lynchs tenure in Seattle is the way he helped the team establish a physical identity in its early years under Pete Carroll and John Schneider. As a young Seahawks team was hitting its stride in 2012, Carroll said of Lynch: "I think he really is the key element to putting this thing together from the attitude perspective at least."
That Lynch wanted his return to happen in Oakland is hardly a surprise. An Oakland native who played his college football at the University of California in nearby Berkeley, Lynch has always had an incredibly strong bond with his hometown.

Injuries limited Lynch to just seven games in 2015, then he announced his retirement with a wordless Tweet during Super Bowl 50. Lynch had an eventful year of retirement, traveling the world, appearing on various TV shows and running his Beast Mode stores in Oakland and Seattle.
That retirement turned out to be short-lived however, and now the 31-year-old lynch will have a chance to finish his career playing in his hometown.
the former Florida State quarterback announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. He is one of numerous ESPN employees being let go this week, including college football insider Brett McMurphy.
Kanells co-host, Ryen Russillo, reportedly is staying with the company. However, The Hollywood Reporters Marisa Guthrie reports Russillo, SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm and Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech will have significantly reduced roles.
Other notable personalities out at ESPN include NFL reporter Ed Werder, college basketball reporter Dana ONeil and college football recruiting writer Jeremy Crabtree. The network reportedly is laying off as many as 100 employees, with most of those cuts affectingon-air talent and writers.

ESPN declined to comment on the job cuts. In a note to employees, however, ESPN president John Skipper mentioned the changing habits of viewers.

in Teflon for many years, but big payouts for rights fees plus significant losses in their subscriber base were like punches to the gut and head, and now the company is trying to make sure they are strong enough to fight in the future, said James Andrew Miller, who wrote a book on ESPN and has contributed to The New York Times. Theyve decided one way to do this is to change their approach to content and rely more heavily on digital; this has enabled them to let go of a big chunk of their talent base.
In October 2015, ESPN laid off about 300 people, most of whom were not on camera. The network has been periodically culling its staff as it searches for ways to cut costs and adapts to changing consumer habits, with fans increasingly watching video clips on their smartphones at the expense of traditional highlight shows like SportsCenter. With ESPN locked into long-term contracts for programming rights with various sports leagues, savings must primarily come from a reduced staff.
In a letter to employees on Wednesday, ESPNs president, John Skipper, acknowledged the difficult decisions ahead and suggested what the network was looking for as it reshapes itself.
Dynamic change demands an increased focus on versatility and value, and as a result, we have been engaged in the challenging process of determining the talent anchors, analysts, reporters, writers and those who handle play-by-play necessary to meet those demands, Mr. Skipper said in the statement.
In the most recent quarter, Disneys cable networks division reported $864 million in operating income, an 11 percent drop from the same period a year ago, with ESPN the reason for the entire decline, Disney said at the time. The company blamed higher N.B.A. and N.F.L. programming costs and lower ad sales for the weak results.
Earlier this month, Amazon paid $50 million for streaming rights to 10 of the N.F.L.s Thursday night games for the 2017 season or five times more than what Twitter paid a season ago, according to SportsBusiness Journal, which also reported that Facebook and YouTube bid on the package.
The ESPN layoffs come as Disney accelerates efforts to introduce an ESPN-branded subscription streaming service. The offering, expected this year and made possible by Disneys $1 billion purchase in 2016 of part of BamTech, Major League Baseballs streaming division, will include coverage of sports like hockey, tennis, cricket and college sports mostly rights that are owned by ESPN, but not televised.
You have to be willing to either create or experience some distribution as we migrate from what has been a more traditionally distributed world to a more nontraditional distribution world, Robert A. Iger, Disneys chief executive, told analysts on a conference call in February. And some of that were going to end up doing to ourselves, meaning that we understand there is disruption, but we believe we have to be a disrupter, too.

Disney has long relied on ESPNs steadily climbing cable subscriber fees as a profit engine. But cable networks across the board have been losing viewers to online media, which has slowed growth, and Wall Street has responded unfavorably.
Despite assurances by Mr. Iger that ESPN remains strong, investors and analysts have remained concerned about upheaval in the television business. Viewership via satellite and cable services is declining as streaming options proliferate, and ESPN, the naysayers contend, is particularly exposed to a slowdown because Disney has locked itself into lavish, long-term payments for sports rights.
In a sign that Disney had done a good job preparing investors for the layoffs, shares climbed slightly in Wednesday morning trading.

Wasn"t this once a series about scary alien monsters, and not the origins of species?
The release of a second prologue to this summer"s Alien: Covenant was intended as a way to mark this year"s "Alien Day," but it might indirectly highlight just where the franchise has gone wrong in the decades since Ridley Scott"s original movie.
"The Crossing" is, essentially, two-and-a-half minutes of exposition about what happened to Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender"s characters after the end of 2012"s Prometheus, paired with some impressive visual spectacle when they arrive at what is seemingly the home planet of the Engineers, the creatures who were responsible for the black goo that eventually created the Xenomorphs that appeared in the 1979 original alien.
for fans of the larger Alien mythology, it"s a short that answers some questions about the end of Prometheus, and teases potential revelations that might come during Covenant. It features none of the same characters from the earlier prologue, but both shorts share two important things in common: a suffocating sense of foreboding and more worryingly, a complete lack of any of the familiar xenomorphic aliens that give the franchise its name (though, there"s plenty of that in the most recent trailer).
For the first three movies in the series, Alien had a central narrative: it was the story of Ellen Ripley"s (Sigourney Weaver) relationship with the titular threat, which shifted from movie to movie depending on the particular obsessions of the director du jour. 1997"s Alien: Resurrection attempts to reboot the franchise by literally rebooting Ripley as a clone, but the continuity is lost and things got more confused with the Alien Vs. Predator movies, even before Ridley Scott returned to the franchise for his prequel projects.
By this point, it"s hard to identify what the Alien movies are actually about, beyond perpetuating their own mythology. Indeed, as the latest prologue to Alien: Covenant demonstrates, the franchise is now focused in large part on topics and concepts that weren"t even part of the series for the first three decades of its existence. The Engineers? The origin of the species and just why it is the way it is? Are those questions that really need to be answered?
In many ways, the trailers for Covenant and certainly the first prologue have made the movie feel like a retread of the very first Alien, or at least a revisiting of that movie"s aesthetic and tone. As unlikely as it might seem, this backwards-looking attitude might just be what the franchise needs right now: a reminder about what made people fall in love with Alien in the first place, and a way to get things back on track.
Well, as long as Michael Fassbender"s creepy androids don"t steal the show again, of course.

Ann Coulter’s “Hate Speech” IS Protected by the First Amendment

The conservative pundit took to her verified Twitter account Wednesday to say the university canceled her speech something the school denied.
Coulters plan to speak had created a war of words on the campus roiled by recent protests.
A student group, the Young Americas Foundation, said Tuesday it had decided not to host the event, saying the university had created a hostile environment. The university said the speech would create security concerns and tried to move it to May 2.
Despite that, Coulter had held out hope Tuesday of speaking somewhere on campus but didnt know where. On Wednesday she announced the cancellation on Twitter. Im so sorry Berkeley canceled my speech, she tweeted.
Im so sorry YAF acquiesced in the cancelation (sic). And Im so sorry for free speech crushed by thugs.
University officials could not immediately be contacted for comment Wednesday afternoon. But before Coulter tweeted, the university put out a news release that said, Contrary to some press reports and circulating narratives, the UC Berkeley administration did not cancel the Coulter event and has never prohibited Ms. Coulter from coming on campus.
The news release said the school decided not to provide a venue for the Thursday speech because of reports that violence would occur. It suggested the speech be given May 2 but school is not in session that day, so Coulter and the YAF opposed that idea.
This is a university, not a battlefield, the news release said. We must make every effort to hold events at a time and location that maximizes the chances that First Amendment rights can be successfully exercised and that community members can be protected.
Coulter slammed the school in her tweets, saying in one: Im so sorry Berkeley had a different story every 20 minutes, which always was: No speech.
Troy Worden, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, said Wednesday that the university didnt provide a venue.
In effect our free speech has been stifled because the university has decided not to assist us in making sure the event can occur successfully, he said. We arent going to have a dangerous event.
The YAF and Berkeley College Republicans have filed a lawsuit that accuses the school of discriminating against conservative guest speakers by placing onerous time and location restrictions on their appearances. Berkeley, known for decades as a bastion of free speech, has seen protests turn violent in recent months.
Earlier this month, 21 people were arrested when anti-Trump and pro-Trump groups clashed in a city park.
In early March, 10 people were arrested when pro- and anti-Trump groups fought in Berkeley.
In February people took to the streets to protest an appearance by right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos. The university said more than $100,000 in damage was done.
An attorney for the Berkeley College Republicans said the lawsuit will proceed.
A lawsuit is a long-term remedy that is going to affect not just Ann Coulters speech but other speakers at UC Berkeley, lawyer Harmeet Dhillon told reporters. The goal is much larger than Ann Coulters speech here tomorrow.
Dhillon said the university officials told her they wouldnt provide a room but Coulter could speak at an outdoor venue. The First Amendment requires equal access, not one level of open access for conservatives, out in the open, with attackers shouting us down, she said, and another level of access in a private, closed setting where people are allowed to enjoy an educational opportunity without interruption.

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics were clinging to a five-point lead midway through the fourth quarter when Chicago Bulls forward Bobby Portis launched a wide-open 3-pointer from the corner. The ball clanged hard off the rim, and Celtics big man Al Horford, while sandwiched between Robin Lopez and Jimmy Butler, leaped to snare the rebound.
None of the three players could come up with the ball, but Butler had his fingertips on it as a mad scramble began when it fell to the floor. Lingering near the scrum, 5-foot-9 Isaiah Thomas raced into the pile and, despite being the shortest player by roughly 10 inches, came up with the ball. Thomas swung his arms wildly in trying to prevent it from being stripped away before he was fouled.
Thomas flexed a bit as the Celtics" bench applauded his effort. The sequence was Game 5 of this series in a nutshell: an ugly tug-of-war in which Thomas and the Celtics seemed to want it more in the fourth quarter.

The rebound was one of the five that Thomas came up with on this night, and he did everything he could to help his team despite an uncharacteristically poor shooting performance. The Celtics pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 108-97 triumph at TD Garden.
The Celtics lead the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game 6 is Friday night in Chicago.
"One thing about playoff basketball, when [your] shot"s not falling, you gotta figure out a way to win," Thomas said. "Tonight we did that."
Thomas struggled to get himself going in Game 5. He missed his first five shots and didnt register his first field goal until there were 42.6 seconds remaining in the first half.
At halftime, Thomas changed both his headband and his shoes. That he changed his shoes was not particularly unusual. Last season, after a big road win over the Golden State Warriors, Thomas noted in his postgame interview that "them other shoes didnt have any buckets in them."
Thomas" new kicks had enough buckets in key moments of the fourth quarter to help the Celtics separate from the Bulls. He finished with 24 points on 6-of-17 shooting with those five rebounds, four assists and a steal over 36 minutes.
And he was not called for any discontinued dribbles, much to the chagrin of Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, who stomped off from his postgame news conference when asked if Thomas had committed any of the infractions that Hoiberg decried after Boston"s Game 4 win in Chicago.

Unlike in Game 4, when Thomas carried Boston in the second half, the celtics got balanced contributions. avery bradley scored 17 of his career postseason high 24 points in the first half, all while chasing Butler for much of the night. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Butler finished with just two points on 1-of-5 shooting with one turnover when defended by Bradley (Bradley, meanwhile, scored 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting with Butler defending).
Butler even admitted after Game 5 that Bradley had won the head-to-head battle.
"Im trying to make it hard on him," Bradley said. "Like I said, Butlers a very good player. And my job for our team is to go out there and defend, try not to foul and make the player work for every shot, make him work on both ends of the floor. And thats what I tried to do tonight."
Horford quietly did all his usual Horford things. He finished with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, nine assists and seven rebounds. He came up with a series of big buckets in the fourth quarter while rolling hard at the rim.
"Thats what we need him to do. Hes a h**l of a player," Thomas said. "Even the stat sheet doesnt explain how good of a player he is sometimes. When hes not scoring or rebounding, hes doing a lot of things to help out everybody else on this team, whether that be help-side defense, whether that be making the right play on offense. Hes a complete basketball player. And when he plays like he did tonight, especially in the second half, nine times out of 10, we usually win those games."

Once down 0-2 in this series, the Celtics head to Chicago with a chance to close out the Bulls. The momentum of the series began shifting when Rajon Rondo was ruled out before Game 3, and Boston has played far more inspired ball since Thomas returned home to be with his family in Tacoma, Washington, following the death of his younger sister.
The Celtics always believed they could rally from their early series deficit.
"I mean, its kinda been the story of our team, being able to fight through adversity. No matter what we go through, we would overcome it," Bradley said. "And I think its a group of guys, our coaching staff, we believe. We believe in one another.
"I said it earlier: We went to Chicago knowing that we were going to win those games, not hoping. We knew that we were going to take two games, then come here and take care of home. Now its our job to continue to play the same way and finish the series in Chicago."

SAN ANTONIO - What if we told you one of the biggest Spurs fans in the world isn"t from San Antonio? Tyrone Henderson"s man cave is like a Spurs museum. It even has a replica of the AT&T Center scoreboard.
KENS5 got a tour.
"The way basketball is supposed to be played is the way the spurs play it, and that"s the thing that I love most about the Spurs," superfan Tyrone Henderson said.
A walk through Henderson"s basement shows that every inch of space is covered with Spurs memorabilia.
"I wanted my man cave to actually look like the AT&T Center with the video boards, the retirednumbersand the championship banners," Henderson noted.
He"s asdie-hardas Spurs fans get. The collection started in 2012.
"I started with a little poster on the wall and, as it grew, I just started buying more and more stuff," he said. "It became really addictive."
He has replica trophies,bobbleheads, jerseys, and a tabletop mirroring the AT&T Center basketball court.
"If there was something that I couldn"t buy, I decided I was just going to make it myself; like the scoreboard," said Henderson of his replica of the AT&T Centerjumbotronhanging from the ceiling of his basement.
He put it together using poster board, glue, tape, and digital picture frames.
"Anything I can find that"s Spurs, I have to have it. At all costs. Money is not an issue when it comes to the Spurs, he bragged.
The man cave is pretty impressive, especially since Henderson, 45, has never been to a Spurs game.
In fact, he"s never even been to San Antonio.
"I actually live in St. Louis Missouri," he said over aFaceTimeinterview from his basement in St. Louis.
"This is a baseball town. This is all Cardinals. There aren"t really any Spurs fans in St. Louis. My daughter probably is the only other Spurs fan I know of," said Henderson, who fell in love with the Spurs when they drafted David Robinson.
Hes tried planning trips to the Alamo City, but work always got in the way.
"Since I can"t go to the AT&T Center, I decided I"mgonnabring it to me!"
So even though St. Louis is a bit short on Spurs swag, online shopping does the trick for a dedicated fan in love with a team nearly a thousand miles away.
"When we won in 2014, I"m pretty sure the whole neighborhood heard me because I was screaming and hollering," Henderson recalled. "I was in tears!"
Henderson says that he also tries tokeepup with the AT&T Center renovations.
He"s a bit behind, but he plans to redo the jumbotron to match the current model.
"Once we won the championship in "99, that was the greatest moment ever there. I"ve probably had one sad moment back in 2013. Game 6 against Miami, Henderson lamented.

All-Star Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward is close to full strength and said he is ready to play when the Jazz visit the Los Angeles Clippers in Tuesday night"s playoff game in Los Angeles.
Hayward came down with food poisoning prior to Sunday"s Game 4 of the series and was limited to nine minutes before he was sent home at halftime. Utah won the contest 105-98 to even the series at two games apiece.
Now Hayward is aiming to help the Jazz take the lead in the series.
"I feel a lot better," Hayward told reporters on Tuesday. "I was definitely down for the count. I haven"t been that sick in years."
Hayward said that both he and his wife suddenly got sick after eating at a sandwich shop.
Asked if he will return to the sandwich shop, Hayward shot back, "absolutely not."

Backed against a wall in front of reporters jammed into a tight hallway at Portland"s Moda Center, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich waited for questions following an April 10 loss to the Trail Blazers.
"Let"s go," he barked five seconds in. "I"m ready to go get dinner."
Anybody who spends significant amount of time around Popovich knows he"s prone to bouts of impatience. Especially when good food and wine are on the line. But anyone who has witnessed Pop build a perennial contender in the NBA over the past 20 years -- alongside general manager R.C. Buford and the Spurs ownership -- also knows he likes to plan ahead.
The result? Sixty-one more wins this season for San Antonio on the heels of losing franchise cornerstone Tim Duncan.
Think about it: The Spurs win so regularly, their future Hall of Famer has become an afterthought.

But let"s not lose sight of the significance here: This year marked the first time in NBA history a team has won 60-plus games the season after losing a former MVP who spent his entire career with the same team. And it"s just the second time in league annals a team captured 50-plus wins in the same scenario. The other time? You guessed it: The spurs did it the season after david robinson"s departure.
"We realize this is not something common," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili told ESPN. "The truth is that we as a team, and me personally, we"re lucky enough and good enough to be able to sign a guy like Kawhi [Leonard] at No. 15 in the draft. Then because of our history, whatever, we were able to sign a guy like LaMarcus [Aldridge] too, and convince him this is a place where he should play, and to play with T.D. and see what this is about. So I guess there"s a lure in coming to play for this team.
"Adding those two guys makes you instantaneously a contender. Then, you always know that the front office is going to be good enough to add key pieces in different areas. It was a combination of things."
Luck has obviously served as a contributing factor in San Antonio"s current run of 20 straight postseason appearances. Not a soul in the organization denies it.
"Certainly, the 1997 lottery ... it"s not only the opportunity in the lottery, but also having a generational star like Tim," Buford told ESPN. "That changed the course of our organization for almost 20 years. So our best skill has been being really lucky. Again, pretty damned lucky. Then, hopefully, we"re not s******g it up."
Popovich offered his take to ESPN.
"We"re not full of ourselves thinking we invented the wheel or did some amazing thing," Popovich said.

The arrival of Duncan bought Popovich and Buford more time from ownership to build the team"s culture. In that time, they unearthed stars such as Tony Parker and Ginobili, who fit their program, and later brought in Leonard, Aldridge and Pau Gasol.
Remember, back during San Antonio"s first championship season in 1998-99, Popovich came under fire when the Spurs started off with a 6-8 record. On Feb. 28 of that lockout-shortened season, the Spurs were blown out at the Alamodome by the Utah Jazz, and Popovich was tossed after receiving a pair of technical fouls in the third quarter.
Fans booed. There was talk Popovich would be fired. But ownership stayed the course.
"Well, we know full well how fortunate we are to have the ownership we"ve had that allows us to do long-term planning," Popovich said. "It"s pretty dependent on the vision of ownership -- how much patience they have, how much trust they have in you and how willing they are to look ahead. You never go in knowing what you"re going to have, and I guess if you have success initially, it helps that trust build and grow."
"I feel like they"re always thinking about the next step here. They"ve been grooming Kawhi to be in the light and kind of take over. I think that"s what has made them so good."

Buford calls Popovich"s vision "one of the great gifts" the coach has bestowed upon the organization.
"I think we"ve always tried to be thoughtful in planning for the future," Buford said. "But I think the other thing that has been helpful is the way that Pop has managed people"s careers -- allowed Tim to play longer than maybe we would have expected, allowed Manu to play longer. As those generational players play longer, that helps you to sustain it.
"Pop has never focused our organization solely on, "We"ve got to come up with the perfect team tonight." He"s always allowed us to plan. He"s always been like, "This is what"s best for our team now. But let"s not compromise what"s best for the organization in the future." So we live in that state all the time."
That"s one of the first qualities Aldridge noticed after his first season with the Spurs last year.
"I feel like they"re always thinking about the next step here," Aldridge told ESPN. "They"ve been grooming Kawhi to be in the light and kind of take over. I think that"s what has made them so good. They"ve had guys that have been here for a long time, and I think that gives them time to groom the next guys up. And I think guys understand that playing here and playing for this organization is just about winning. I think that"s why they always are able to keep it going."

For most teams, a 61-win season a year after losing a franchise icon wouldn"t trigger trepidation about the future. But it"s there. You can hear it in Buford"s voice when he ponders what"s next.
In addition to losing Duncan, the Spurs are in the midst of a succession in ownership. Julianna Hawn Holt replaced her husband, Peter Holt, as chairman and CEO of the franchise last March in what was considered somewhat of a bombshell of an announcement. Several within the organization say the new chairman and CEO has operated similarly to her predecessor in that she has given Buford and Popovich the same basketball autonomy granted by her now-retired husband.
Still, it"s significant change.
Let"s also not forget that Ginobili and Parker are in the twilight of their careers. Popovich won"t be around forever, either.
That"s a subject Buford won"t even broach at this point.
"Yeah, there"s a great deal of unknowns," Buford said. "We"re not done with this transition just because Tim stepped away. It would be presumptuous to say that things are going to go the same way they have this year [in the future]. That would not be wise.
"But to have the influence of Tim for that long, for Manu, and their leadership, their mentorship, all that, has paid dividends for the development of younger players."
"I think our culture has been important to this group," Buford continued, "and my belief is that the next generation isn"t going to adapt the past generation"s culture just because. I think they"re going to have to take ownership of their own culture. Whoever that next generation is -- Kawhi, LaMarcus -- I don"t know how all that shakes out. But hopefully with good people, they"ll take ownership of our culture; and with the leadership of our coaches, hopefully it"ll resemble the culture of the past."

Parker -- who has played through San Antonio"s various manifestations, having spent two seasons with Robinson, his entire career with Duncan and now the past six years with Leonard -- hopes so too.
"It"s all about the team, the franchise," Parker said. "It started with George Gervin and 5-0 [Robinson"s jersey number]. I played two years with 5-0. So I had a great example to follow. Then we got Timmy, then Manu. Now we"re trying to show some of those same things to all the young guys coming up. With Kawhi and LaMarcus coming in, it"s my job with Manu to show them all about how the Spurs" mentality is."
Duncan, meanwhile, continues to be a presence within the organization. He has attended Spurs workouts periodically since retiring, plays pickup with former teammates and is often seen working one-on-one against Gasol or talking to one of the club"s younger players, such as Dejounte Murray. During San Antonio"s opening-round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, Duncan showed up at the team"s shootaround just before Game 2 and then after Game 4 -- when the team got back to San Antonio -- to work with Aldridge. The Big Fundamental even has a locker inside the coaches" room at the Spurs facility, right next to the stall of Monty Williams, executive vice president of operations.

The truth of the matter is that many of the Spurs" former stars remain firmly entrenched in the San Antonio community, and that plays a role in the franchise"s continuity.
"I think you build your franchise not around just one player, no matter how exceptional that player is," Gasol told ESPN. "That"s what gives you the continuity. You build a culture that other great players want to be a part of, understanding that they"re probably going to have to give up a part of themselves in their success and recognition. But the ultimate recognition, I think, is to win championships. That"s what speaks over any individual accomplishment, especially in sports. So as long as you have that perspective, you can come here and be a part of this team."

Buford certainly hopes that continues to be the case, but he understands the future is still uncertain. So for now, Buford and everyone else in the organization will lean on the foundation they"ve built in San Antonio.
"Hopefully, we"ve planned for all this," Buford said. "We"ll try to execute as well as we can, then we"ll see. Tim carried us for a long time. Now, we"re going to find out whether we can do it for real or not."

In a message sent Wednesday to ESPN employees, network president John Skipper announced the company was beginning its next round of layoffs, a long-anticipated move that is expected to thin the ranks of ESPNs on-air and online talent.
A necessary component of managing change involves constantly evaluating how we best utilize all of our resources, and that sometimes involves difficult decisions, Skipper wrote. Our content strategy - primarily illustrated in recent months by melding distinct, personality-driven SportsCenter TV editions and digital-only efforts with our biggest sub-brand - still needs to go further, faster . . . and as always, must be efficient and nimble. Dynamic change demands an increased focus on versatility and value, and as a result, we have been engaged in the challenging process of determining the talent - anchors, analysts, reporters, writers and those who handle play-by-play - necessary to meet those demands. We will implement changes in our talent lineup this week. A limited number of other positions will also be affected and a handful of new jobs will be posted to fill various needs.

According to Sports Illustrateds Richard Deitsch, the layoffs could affect close to 100 employees, a larger number than originally expected. Jim Miller, who co-wrote a book on ESPNs history, said Wednesday that around 50 names you will recognize; another 50 you may not will be losing their jobs. He tweeted:

Longtime NFL reporter Ed Werder was among the first to announce he had been laid off, on the eve of the NFL draft, no less (he had been assigned to cover the New Orleans Saints at the leagues annual selection meeting). If there was proof Wednesday that no one was safe, this was it. Werder was among the networks most respected NFL voices. Werder tweeted:

The layoffs are an attempt by ESPN to evolve in the wake of a two-headed challenge: a declining subscriber base and skyrocketing rights fees. Over the past five years, the network has lost somewhere around 12 million subscribers as the viewing public looks for cheaper avenues for home entertainment. At the same time, the money ESPN has paid to the professional sports leagues to acquire their live events steadily climbed. Last year, the networks new nine-year agreement with the NBA to televise pro basketball games took effect. The reported cost to ESPN: somewhere around $1.5 billion per year, a massive increase over the previous deal. Thats on top of deals the network already had with the NFL ($1.9 billion annually), various NCAA conferences and the College Football Playoff (well over $1 billion), and Major League Baseball ($700 million). Some of those deals will be up for renewal in the not-so-distant future.
Its the second round of layoffs at ESPN in less than two years. In October 2015, ESPN laid off around 300 people who worked behind the scenes. The network employs around 8,000 people in total.
"I was expecting it to go either way. I was just happy to be there," Morris said on "Good Morning America." "When it happened, I was just like, "You know, it is what it is. Things will happen as they may.""

LOS ANGELES -- Genius, the television series about Albert Einsteins life is filled with a lot of what actor Geoffrey Rush calls Einstein zingers.
Theyre one-liners that he either said or wrote and, says executive producer Ken Biller, are really perceptive and quite funny.
Based on the biography Einstein: His Life and Universe, the 10-part drama shows what drove the scientists life and how he coped.
The young Einstein played in the series by Johnny Flynn was something of a bohemian artist, according to director Ron Howard. He has a maverick sensibility that sometimes gets him in trouble and creates one of the barriers.
Later, he found himself tilting against a society that didnt want to welcome his thoughts. In retrospect, you look at how close society came to not benefiting from Albert Einstein.
The National Geographic series goal was to show how much more there was to Einstein than math and physics.
Im like most people in that I sort of thought of the brilliant old guy sticking his tongue out and the theory of relativity, Howard says. What the book and series suggest is a complexity not only in the character but in the times in which he was living.
To make sure the younger Einstein meshed with the older one, Flynn and Rush (who plays him in later life) chatted on Skype and did workshops together.
We had the same dialect coach, Flynn says. That was a huge help because Geoffrey had worked with her before. She was a medium for us to communicate and get a sense of this person physically and vocally. We could combine our ideas and work together.
Rush says the two interviewed each other What would it be like to talk to your younger self? That opened up stuff that was not actually in the text but was a good exercise.
To get a sense of the real Einstein, Rush looked for films but didnt find much.

Instead, he lit on those zingers and realized there was a deep-rooted Yiddish spirit or level of wit that he was obviously very good at. When you see some of the footage of when he first went to America or Britain, he got off the boat and, within seconds, hed have a group of newfound friends or reporters cackling pretty seriously. His optimism is very present in his humanitarian outlook.
Flynn says that humor was present in Einsteins youth, as well, despite the tragedies he went through, two World Wars among them. Thats not what you know of him as a layman. Thats not what I knew of him before embarking on the project. Thats whats been really cool. We find humor in tragic circumstances because thats the human spirit coming through.
Today, Howard adds, similar obstacles exist, threatening to squelch creativity and human possibility.
Failure, producer Brian Grazer says, is a big part of Einsteins journey. The driving mystery of Einsteins life and the failure he encountered kids will find quite relatable. Theyll be able to access that and it will ultimately become kind of an aspirational piece.
Rush, looking at definitions of genius, found a quote from philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer that fit Einstein: Genius hits a target no one else can see.
He had a personality that was very anti-authoritarian, Rush says. Hed given up his German citizenship as a very young man because he didnt believe in a militaristic state. He always saw the better side of humanity but then had to confront the development of atomic weaponry as a way of defeating someone from Germany. If they had it in their hands, it would be devastating to their enemy.
"Genius" airs April 25 on the National Geographic channel.

Jabrill Peppers Tested Positive For Diluted Sample At NFL Combine | SI Wire | Sports Illustrated
Michigan"s Jabrill Peppers and Alabama"s Reuben Foster are two of the better players in the 2017 NFL Draft. Foster, of course, is arguably the best linebacker available, while Peppers -- a hybrid safety/cornerback -- an elite-level playmaker.

Eaglesgetting defensive.When the Eagles signed Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith,it alleviated a bit of the need for a receiver. Philly still has a massive hole at cornerback, though. Could one of the top defenders in this year"s class fall to them at pick 14?
Giantswaitfor Eli Manning"s replacement?Jerry Reese first hinted at the Giants finding Manning"s replacement during his post-season press conference. Depending on how things shape out in the draft, Texas Tech"s Pat Mahomes or Notre Dame"s DeShone Kizer could be there for the Giantsat pick No. 23. Would they pull the trigger, or go with a player who could help this season (linebacker, defensive end, tight end)?

Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks - April 24, 2017
Worst forfeit: The Wizards loss tied the series at 2-2 with Game 5 on Wednesday in Washington. All five Atlanta starters scored in double figures Monday night as the Wizards defense struggled to wrap anyone up. Bradley Beal led all scorers with 32 points, John Wall has 22 points and 10 assists, and Paul Millsap led the Hawks with 19.
Worst stat: The Wizards defense was worn out in Game 4, and Washington ultimately seceded its series lead with this ugly stat:
Worst sequence: John Wall missed a contested layup with the Wizards down seven, then Dennis Schroder bounced in a three-pointer on the other end to put Atlanta up by double digits with 1:41 left to play.
Best circus shot: The three-point play that got Atlanta its 10-point lead with 4:28 left in the game involved a two-point shot he made off of one foot as he fell to the floor. Wizards fans may be the only ones crying.
Best Bogdanovic: With just over eight minutes to play, Bojan Bogdanovic hit a 25-foot three-pointer to keep the Wizards within a possession. With 13 points in 16 minutes, the guard has already had his most productive game of the series.
Worst foul: Markieff Morris swatted Paul Millsaps arm and drew his fifth foul with 5:41 to play and the Wizards down four points.
Worst defense: Jose Calderon has little business getting tip-ins at the rim, as he did early in the fourth quarter with Bradley Beal guarding him. And Kent Bazemore has 16 points and seven assists. Gulp
Worst coaching conundrum: With the Wizards frontcourt sharing seven fouls between them and Bradley Beal and John Wall having clocked 30 and 32 minutes respectively, Scott Brooks started four reserves and Otto Porter Jr. in the fourth quarter. They promptly fell into an eight-point hole, with just one made field goal, to leave the score at 89-81 with nine minutes left in regulation. Then Brooks put the starters back in.
Best hometown nostalgia: Apparently they like their free chicken in Atlanta, as well.
Worst bench: BeyondBojan Bogdanovic, who had 13 points midway through the fourth quarter, the Wizards bench had scored just 10 points. Kelly Oubres stat line sits at zero points, two rebounds and two turnovers.
Best comeback: Mondays game has featured a few big swings, and the Wizards pulled off another in the third quarter. Washington bounced back from a nine-point deficit to tie things at 77 all and enter the fourth quarter with Bradley Beal (27 points on 10-of-18 shooting) in rhythm and the defense clicking. A strong third period bodes well for a good finish for the Wizards: Statistically, the fourth quarter has been their best. Theyve made an average 56 percent of their shots in the final period throughout the series.
Best steal: With just under two minutes left in the third, Bradley Beal managed to s****h the ball off of a bad Mike Dunleavy pass and dish to Otto Porter Jr., who made the three-point play to tie the game at 73.
Best Beal: The Wizards are out to an 18-9 edge in the third quarter in part because Bradley Beal has upped his performance. The star guard has two three-pointers this quarter and is picking up the slack in lieu of John Wall, who has just three points in the third.
Worst quarter: Atlanta owned the second quarter, 31-15, all without their starting point guard. Jose Calderon found a rhythm, Dwight Howard surged back to life, and Washington made just 5 of 20 attempts from the floor. That saddled the Wizards with a59-50 halftime deficit. Bradley Beal still leads the Wizards with 15 points, and John Wall has 11 points and six assists. Kent Bazemore has 10 points and five assists.
Best (Worst?) Dwight Howard: After a quiet first three games, the Hawks center is finally starting to look like his old playoff self in Atlanta. He has 14 points and 11 rebounds in 15 minutes, as the Wizards struggle for the first time all series to match him at the rim.
Worst drought: The Wizards went more than four minutes in the second quarter without a field goal and relinquished what was once a nine-point lead. Meanwhile, the Hawks went on a 12-0 tear capped by a three-pointer from Jose Calderon to lead 41-38 with six minutes until halftime.
Worst scuffle: If you can call if a scuffle. Calderone received his third foul after a back-and-forth with Brandon Jennings, and the refs werent finished. Kelly Oubre Jr. was called for two offensive fouls just 54 seconds apart shortly after that. He joined Markieff Morris, who also has two fouls, on the bench with nine minutes left until halftime
Best start: After slogging through the opening few minutes, the Wizards ended the first quarter shooting 56 percent from the floor. Bradley Beal leads with nine points despite connecting on just 1 of 4 attempts from three, and John Wall has eight.
Best draw: John Wall drew three of the Hawks four total fouls in the first quarter, including Dennis Schroders third foul in 10 minutes of play.
Worst Morris: The Wizards starting power forward hasnt backed up his pregame smack talk yet. Markieff Morris started 1 for 4 from the flour, racked up two fouls in five minutes and tried unsuccessfully to draw a charge against Dwight Howard. Perhaps worst of all, Paul Millsap scored seven points in eight minutes.
Worst misses:As Bradley Beal likes to remind us, a miss is a lady. But miss is also what the Wizards did 4 of 5 times from the three-point line in the first four minutes Monday.
Best decor:Paul Millsap and Markieff Morriss on-court/off-court beef has provided plenty of entertainment this first-round series. Morriss latest entry came afterthe Wizards lost, 116-98, on Saturday in Atlanta, when the power forward called his counterpart a crybaby while talking about the the free throw disparity between the two teams.
Best mojo:On Sunday, Ted Leonsis watched in person as the Washington Capitals clinched their first-round playoff series in Toronto, moving through all the requisite emotions of an overtime playoff hockey game. The Wizards cant clinch their series against Atlanta tonight, of course, but having Leonsisin the housecarrying all that good playoff energy cant hurt, right?

>> Wed like to get to the free throw line, Wizards Coach Scott Brooks said. We havent been there enough. Brooks highlighted the free throw disparity between the teams. TheWizards may own the two-to-one series edge, but the Hawks are dominating the battle at the line. Through three games, Atlanta has attempted 109 free throws compared to Washingtons 70.
>> As an antagonist, Markieff Morris is a lot more effective when his game works harder than his mouth, writes Jerry Brewer. He is a nuisance an entertaining one if youre into conflict when he talks trash to Paul Millsap. However, when hes making three-pointers, blocking shots and catching lobs, Morris becomes something greater and more difficult for Millsap to handle: a problem. The Washington Wizards can live with Morris irritating Millsap, but if they want to win two more games and end this series with the Hawks quickly, they would rather see Morris bother Millsap with his play, not his antics.
>> John Wall said he saw it coming, imagining how Atlantawould come out with hair-on-fire intensity in Game 3. I said, we have to withstand their first five minutes, Wall recalled. Although Wall was spot on with his prediction, his warning didnt matter as the Wizards played the first quarter at half speed, allowing 38 points and setting the tone for the rest of the game in which they trailed and chased but never caught up in the 116-98 defeat. Ahead of Game 4, Wall isnt the only player issuing warnings. To leave Atlanta with a stranglehold on this round, up 3-1 as opposed to a 2-2 tie, Washington must heighten its sense of urgency, especially at the start of the game.
>> The John Wall playoff highlight reel has yet to disappoint. In three postseason games, Wall has produced enough wow moments to satisfy the entire spring, raising his superstar profile and carrying the Wizards in this opening round. And though it has been wonderful and necessary, though youd be a fool to want less from him, its time to see more from the rest of the Wizards, writes Jerry Brewer.
>> Wizards forward Markieff Morris continues to make thefirst postseason series of his career a memorable one mostly with his words. While many players might opt for cliched praise for opponents as to not needlessly stir the pot, Morris has grabbed the biggest spoon he could find and mixed personal animosityinto this first-round playoff series. His target: four-time all-star Paul Millsap. Good game, Morris said after Millsap dominated Game 3. He did more for his team tonight. Me as a man, you know, you take your wins with your losses and I take my wins with my losses all the time. You know, he did more for his team. Hes a crybaby. You get all the calls and you a crybaby. Thats how Im looking at it.
>> The gloomy faces on the Wizards sideline told the story. John Wall sat closest to the coaching staff, a red towel draped his shoulders there would be no mistaking it for a cape Saturday night, when Walls individual moments of brilliance went to waste. There are plenty of worsts and a few bests in this Game 3 wrap up.
>> Sports fans dont agree about much. But when the Wizards announced in late March that they would wear their white stars-and-stripes uniforms at all home playoff games this spring, the response seemed pretty close to unanimous approval. Theres one issue, though: You cant buy them.
>> Before Game 3, Washington was pleased with how the team had been sidelining Dwight Howard and the Wizards were also pleased with their adjustments when Howard is absent. Then the Hawks big man posted a +24 in 26 minutes in Game 3, with only three fouls.
>> Theres bad blood between John Wall and Hawks guard Dennis Schroder: You remember last time we played them in the playoffs, when I broke my hand? Wall said. You see the picture he posted, going to the conference finals. And Im just sitting there, like, sad face, with my hand wrapped, and him and Bazemore just laughing. Its just about history. Just history in the game.
>> Its funny now to remember that, less than a year ago, John Wall and Bradley Beal werent enough. As a star tandem, they were thought to be malfunctioning too inconsistent, too many injuries, too much bickering and most believed the Wizards needed to add another marquee player to be taken seriously. After failing to land that big-name difference-maker in free agency last summer, the future seemed uncertain. Then, Wall and Beal led the Wizards to their best regular season in 38 years, and now theyre two victories from advancing to the second round of the NBA playoffs for the third time in four years. But the vibe is different this time. They arent underdogs showing flashes of becoming an elite backcourt. They have arrived. It took them five years to get here, but if you think thats a long time, it speaks more to impatience than anything Wall and Beal did wrong, writes Jerry Brewer.
>> The story of Game 2 may well have been the referees. Endless, constant fouls turned the game into a near-three-hour slog, with the Hawks shooting 38 free throws and Washington firing 33. The crowd provided its evaluation intermittently, chanting, Refs, you suck! throughout the night.
>> Brandon Jennings played an unlikely hero for the Wizards in Game 2. Jenningss number was called with just more than two minutes left in the third with Washington in dire straits, down four points and relying on a short rotation with four players including its two starting forwards in foul trouble. Jennings had played 15 minutes in Sundays Game 1 win at Verizon Center and come up with five assists, but no points and a -10 plus/minus rating. But three days later, just more thana minute into the fourth quarter, the backup point guard hit a step-back jumper to cut theWizards deficit totwo. Just more thana minute after that, he hit two consecutive jump shots, got a defensive stop, and dished to a cutting Jason Smith for the game-tying dunk. Some nights, it might be your night, he said. But when your numbers called, just do what you have to do for the team.
>> In good times and bad, the Wizards are an excitable bunch. When your best player is an ebullient point guard, when a moody center nicknamed the Polish Hammer mans the middle and when your power forward creates a Death Row DC alter ego, youre not going to be a laid-back team. Raw emotion fuels and hinders the Wizards. During his first season in Washington, Coach Scott Brooks has attempted to channel that passion, especially with John Wall, writes Jerry Brewer.
>> Once again, Bradley Beal bounced back from a rough night, torching the fourth quarter of Game 2 with a 6-of-9 shooting performance (16 points). Beal finished with 31 points (12 of 27 from the floor with four three-pointers), his second career 30-plus total in the playoffs. And he credited his superstar teammate. Its great, Beal said, responding to John Walls show of support late in the game. Especially John, more than anybody, he doesnt care if I shoot the ball 100 times in a game or how many I make or miss.
>> The key to the Wizards Game 2 win? Having their five best players on the floor together, which was more difficult than youd think. Finally, with the starting unit together through the final 4:35 of the fourth quarter, Washington turned a tie game into a 2-0 series lead. And just like in Game 1, John Wall was the best player on the floor.
>> John Wall was incredible in the third quarter of Game 1, but he might have been even better than you think: The Wizards outscored the Hawks by 43.5 net points per 100 possessions in that frame with Wall scoring in transition, off the pick and roll and on drives to the basket. The guards effective field goal percentage (77.8 percent) was light-years ahead of his regular season performance (48.2 eFG percent).
>> A die-hard Wizards fan was crushed by John Wall, who was going for a loose ball late in Game 1. His reaction? I took most of the impact for him because we cant afford to have him being hurt, especially with Atlanta being such a dirty team. I saved our best player, and if thats what it takes, thank G*d.
>> Marcin Gortat was struggling badly but recently he has looked more like the player who once anchored a very good Wizards starting lineup. And all it took was for his backup to get hurt. Gortats mini resurgence in Game 82 of the regular season, he made 8-of-9 shots for 16 points against Miami and he outplayed Dwight Howard in Game 1, scoring 14 points (7 of 11) with 10 rebounds and two blocks comes as Ian Mahinmi recovers from a left calf strain.
>> The most interesting comments after Washingtons Game 1 win over Atlanta likely came via Hawks star Paul Millsap. The difference in the game was we were playing basketball, he said, and they were playing MMA. The Wizards have not attracted any sort of reputation as a brutish team this season, and they spoke of Sundays debut as a normal affair, spiced withpostseason intensity but nothingremarkable. Nonetheless, Markieff Morris later promised double MMA. So theres that.
>> Markieff Morris gave the Wizards their social media nickname, Death Row DC. Its kind of an inside joke. Its also kind of serious. Death Row; thats the type of team we are, thats the type of team we want to be, Bradley Beal said. Which is what, exactly? Aphysical team that will kind of trash talk you a little bit, and that just dont take no BS, Beal said. Thats pretty much it. And Morriss prints are already stamped all over this first-round playoff series.
>> This NBA playoff run is the most important of John Walls career, writes Post columnist Jerry Brewer. It could shatter the false perception that hes a player who is not quite elite. It could elevate Wall, 26, to a level of respect that h**l boldly tell you is overdue.

>> The Wizards stunning turnaround from a 2-8 start to a 49-win season began during a 1-2 road trip in December. One thing Ill say about this team, nobody threw coach under the bus, John Wall said. Then we started to have a stretch of a lot of home games when we started to win and win and win and finding a way to win a couple games on the road. I think thats what built our confidence back and then we were like, Were a pretty d**n good team. Here are the five most important games of the Wizards season.
>> The Wizards last trip to the postseason ended in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The team that jettisoned Washington? The Atlanta Hawks. This isnt 2015, however, and the Wizards are welcoming this playoff series against the Hawks. Part of that is the addition of Markieff Morris to keep up with four-time all-star Paul Millsap, who has given the wizards plenty of trouble in the past. Weve been going at it all year, Morris said about playing Millsap. Its a matchup Im definitely looking forward to in the playoffs. Were going to get it in, for sure. Its going to be a good one.
>> When the Wizards began the season by losing eight of their first 10 games, Ernie Grunfelds 14-year tenure as the teams general manger was quickly called into question. Washington is now 49-33 and has home-court advantage for the first round. The teams success is in no small part due to Grunfeld, who has held an unshakable belief in the Wizards core of John Wall, Bradley Beal and Otto Porter Jr., as well as the organizations long-held strategy, referred to simply as The Plan. Throughout all the ups and downs, Grunfeld remained patient, and now hes reaping the results.
>> Scott Brooks calls D.C. a magical city. Youll be forgiven for thinking Brooks might have a bit of magic about himself. Maybe his first 10 months in this city could have gone better, but its hard to imagine how. He helped turn a .500 team with a downtrodden fan base into an Eastern Conference heavyweight, boasting the best record in the East since Dec. 1. He won Washingtons first division title in 38 years, clinched home-court advantage in the opening round for the first time in 38 years, and flirted with 50 wins for the first time in 38 years.
>> The Hawks simply dont have the personnel to keep John Wall, Bradley Beal and Otto Porter Jr. in check. But the Hawks pose a threat inside with the frontcourt combo of Paul Millsap and Dwight Howard, and if Atlanta should win, it will have more to do with how that pair dominates the paint than whether the Hawks stop the Wizards trio.
>> Post NBA reporter Tim Bontemps broke down all of the NBAs first-round matchups ahead of Saturdays kickoff. He predicted the Wizards would win in five games but would need John Wall and Bradley Beal to again play like they have in past postseasons.
>> Weve got good news and bad news: Washington is the 13th team, including the 1987-88 Bullets, to qualify for the playoffs after starting 2-8 or worse since the NBA playoffs expanded to 16 teams in 1983-84. Now for the bad news: Teams that turned their seasons around after 10 games typically havent fared well in the postseason. In fact, the 2003-04 Miami Heat is the only team among the previous 12 to reach the postseason after starting 2-8 or worse to win even one series.
>> You know who does fear the Wizards? The Cavaliers, at least according to Charles Barkley. The TNT analyst and former star suggested Cleveland might actually prefer to finish second because it means it would avoid the mighty Washington Wizards until the Eastern Conference finals. No, really.
