Volunteers clean up after violence on Milwaukee"s north side

WRAL-TV: "Action News 5" (May 17, 1979)

MILWAUKEE Volunteers swept and picked up debris Sunday in a north Milwaukee neighborhood that was rocked by hours of late night violent unrest sparked by a police officer"s shooting of a man fleeing a traffic stop.

Up to three dozen people swept up glass and filled trash bags with rocks, bricks and bottles at an intersection where a BP gas station burned to the ground, a traffic light was bent and bus shelters were shoved to the ground Saturday night. One volunteer picked up a bullet casing and handed it to police.

Darlene Rose, 31, said she understands the anger that fueled the violence, but that it doesn"t help.

"I feel like if you"re going to make a difference, it"s got to be an organized difference," Rose said. "The people that came and looted, you"re not going to see them here today."

The event that triggered the violence was the Saturday afternoon shooting by a police officer of a man authorities said was armed and who fled a traffic stop. It wasn"t clear if the man aimed the gun at officers.

Authorities have not released the names or races of the man who was killed nor the officer who shot him.

Three protesters were arrested, and one officer was injured by a thrown brick. At a late night news conference at which city leaders appealed for calm, Mayor Tom Barrett said the man was hit twice, in the chest and arm.

The protesters were largely black, and Alderman Khalif Rainey who represents the district said early Sunday that the city"s black residents are "tired of living under this oppression." Nearly 40 percent of Milwaukee"s 600,000 residents are black, and heavily concentrated on the north side.

"Now this is a warning cry. Where do we go from here? Where do we go as a community from here?" Rainey said at the news conference with Barrett.

The anger at shootings by Milwaukee police is not new, and comes as tension between black communities and law enforcement has ramped up across the nation, resulting in protests and the recent killings of officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dallas.

Milwaukee was beset by protests and calls for police reform after an officer fatally shot Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill black man, in 2014. In December, the Justice Department announced it would work with Milwaukee police on reforms. Chief Ed Flynn had asked for what"s known as a collaborative reform process after the federal government said it wouldn"t pursue criminal civil rights charges against the officer.

Critics said the department should have submitted to a review of its patterns and practices, as was conducted in Ferguson, Missouri, after the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black, by a white police officer in 2014.

The state is investigating the latest shooting in Milwaukee. Barrett said the officer was wearing a body camera.

Barrett said police stopped the 23-year-old man who died for "suspicious activity." Police said he was carrying a gun that had been stolen in a March burglary in suburban Waukesha.

"This stop took place because two officers ... saw suspicious activity," the mayor said. "There were 23 rounds in that gun that that officer was staring at. I want to make sure we don"t lose any police officers in this community, either."

Around 100 protesters massed at 44th Street and Auer Avenue between 8 and 9 p.m., surging against a line of 20 to 30 officers. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that officers got in their cars to leave at one point and some in the crowd started smashing a squad car"s windows. Another police car was set on fire. The newspaper reported that one of its reporters was shoved to the ground and punched.

Around 11 p.m., police with shields and helmets moved slowly into the intersection, telling a crowd of about 50 people to disperse. Some threw rocks and debris at police, who held up their shields. People in the crowd also threw objects at a business a half-block from the intersection. A nearby traffic light was bent over and bus shelters overturned.

A bank, a gas station, an auto parts store and a beauty supplies shop were burned in the violence. Firefighters held back from the gas station blaze because of gunshots.

Police said the man who was shot had an arrest record. The 24-year-old officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative duty. The officer has been with the Milwaukee department six years, three as an officer.

Just blocks away from the riots, two people were shot and killed Friday and Saturday, bringing to five the number of people who died in shootings in the city during a nine-hour stretch.

"As everyone knows, this was a very, very violent 24 hours in the city of Milwaukee," Assistant Chief Bill Jessup told the Journal Sentinel. "Our officers are out here taking risks on behalf of the community and making split-second decisions."

"Another stupid thing": CNN panel slams Katrina Pierson"s excuse for Trump"s "2nd Amendment" snafu

Trump Spox Katrina Pierson: We Weren’t in Afghanistan Until Obama Decided to Go In

Donald Trumps national campaign spokesperson insisted on Tuesday that the GOP presidential nominee was not trying to incite violence against Hillary Clinton earlier in the day with his suggestion that Second Amendment people could stop her.

Everyone knows Hillary Clinton is a gun-grabber, Katrina Pierson told CNN host Jake Tapper. And everyone knows that if shes in a position to appoint Supreme Court justices, she will do everything she can to remove the Second Amendment. So Mr. Trump was clearly pointing that out, as he has done every day on the campaign trail.

The former reality TV star was quickly criticized by both Democrats and fellow conservatives after saying at a North Carolina campaign rally, If she gets to pick her [Supreme Court] judges, nothing you can do folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is.

He was talking about what Second Amendment activists could do to stop her if she won to stop her from appointing a gun-control nominee to the Supreme Court, Tapper told Bowden. It wasnt about November Its not about November, its after November.

Thats actually not what he was talking about. Just before that he was saying as you said what could happen. He doesnt want that to happen, she replied. And in order to stop that, people that support their Second Amendment rights need to come together and get out there and stop Hillary Clinton from winning in November.

When Tapper asked why Trump did not just simply say he misspoke following the uproar, Pierson said a statement from his campaign saying that he was actually referring to the power of unification inherent in the Second Amendment provided enough clarification.

However, conservative analyst Ana Navarro had a less charitable take on Trumps remarks, saying that he could not grasp the influence he now has in an inflamed political climate.

It sounded like yet another stupid thing that comes out of Trumps mouth, she said. It sounded like, Oh my G*d, here we go again, its Groundhog Day. Just when I thought he might be shifting into policy with that speech yesterday, here were all gonna have to react to yet another stupid, undisciplined thing that Donald Trump said because he seems not to understand the power of words.

Democratic strategist Paul Begala said that, while reasonable people were right to be incensed by Trumps statement, he worried about how someone who is unreasonable would take it.

I fear that an unbalanced person hears that as Ana points out, in an inflamed environment and G*d forbid, thinks that that was a threat, he said. I certainly take it as a threat, and Trump needs to apologize.

Watch the discussion, as posted online, below.

Tyler Austin, Aaron Judge Hit Back-to-Back Home Runs in First At-Bats

Aaron Judge on being called up to the major leagues

Less than 24 hours after Alex Rodriguez ended his MLB career (assuming the Miami Marlins dont have other plans) the new era of New York Yankees baseball began. Tyler Austin was penciled in as the starting first baseman for the Yankees with fellow first-gamer Aaron Judge hitting right behind him as the right fielder. The goosebumps werent there for these two as they hit back-to-back home runs to begin their big league careers.

Its the first time this has happened in history too.

On a 2-2 pitch, Austin smacked a home run off of Tampa Bay Rays starter Matt Andriese into right field. Just as he was beginning to settle in, Judge hit one to center on a 1-2 pitch.

Two young players the Yankees plan to have around for a while, they couldnt have done anything more magnificent than this.

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Its hard enough to have guys go back-to-back. Add to it their first major league at-bats and their spots in the order coming consecutively; if you knew this was going to happen then buy a lottery ticket now. Then when you win give me a chunk of it for the suggestion.

Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson backtracks on blaming Obama for 2004 death of Humayun Khan

Trump Spox Katrina Pierson Destroys Kate Snow And Leaves Her Speechless! MUST WATCH!

Donald Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson admitted her timeline was off when she suggested that President Obama and Hillary Clinton were somehow to blame for the death of U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004 when George W. Bush was commander in chief.

What I was talking about is Donald Trump has no connection with anything to do with Capt. Khan, Pierson said on CNNs New Day Wednesday morning. Hillary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq. She did not support the surge. Barack Obama made things worse by invading more countries than President Bush did.

Donald Trump wasnt there, she added. That was the only point. Donald Trump is being blamed for something he had nothing to do with.

During a discussion with CNNs Wolf Blitzer the night before, Pierson was asked if her boss had any plans to apologize to the Khan family for suggesting that Ghazala Khan, Humayuns grieving mother, was not allowed to speak at last weeks Democratic National Convention because she is Muslim.

What exactly is Mr. Trump supposed to be apologizing for? Pierson asked. It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagements that probably cost his life.

The gaffe went viral overnight, as a hashtag (#KatrinaPiersonHistory) mocking her grasp of history began trending on Twitter.

Pierson even used the hashtag herself.

But it backfired.

The war of words between Trump and the Khans began at last weeks Democratic National Convention, where Khizr Khan delivered a stinging rebuke of Trump over his call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States a policy that would have prevented his son from serving in the U.S. military.

Donald Trump, youre asking Americans to trust you with their future, Khan said. Let me ask you: Have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. Look for the words liberty and equal protection of law.

Khizr Khan said Piersons comments were another example of a lack of factual correctness among Trumps surrogates.

Please, show some decency, Khan said on CNN Tuesday following Pierson, a frequent guest on cable news.

On Wednesday, Pierson admitted she was absolutely wrong to assert Obama and Clintons actions cost Khan his life.

Thats why I used probably, she said. I was just going through the timeline. Because since then, we have had tens of thousands of soldiers that have been lost, 1 million wounded. Six trillion dollars later, how can we possibly put any of the onus on Donald Trump? Its absolutely absurd, and thats why you see so much confusion around this issue.

But no one was blaming Donald Trump for Captain Khans death, CNNs Alisyn Camerota said. You were blaming President Obama and he wasnt president yet.

Donald Trump"s spokeswoman Katrina Pierson says (incorrectly) that it was Obama who "went into Afghanistan"

Katrina Pierson Gets Frustrated and Yells at CNN Anchor Over Her Latest Trump Spin Appearance

Donald Trump"s spokeswoman leveled false accusations against President Obama on Saturday, saying he started the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

When asked on CNN about Trump sayingObama was the "founder" of Islamic State, spokeswoman Katrina Pierson delivered a lengthy response in which she proclaimedit was Obama who "went into Afghanistan," where U.S. troops had begun fighting in 2001 under former President George W. Bush.

"Remember, we werent even in Afghanistan by this time," she said of Obama taking office in 2009. "Barack Obama went into Afghanistan creating another problem."

The visibly surprised CNN anchor pressed Pierson to confirm that she was saying thatObama took the country into Afghanistan.

"What I"m saying is the policies of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that was Obamas war, yes, Pierson said.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Pierson cited audio problems.

Pierson, who ran unsuccessfully in a 2014 primary against Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), is a regular face on cable news, staunchly defending her boss.

But she"s also been the subject of controversy.

When Trump recently battled publicly with Khizr Khan, whose sonwas killed by a car bomb in 2004 while serving in Iraq, Pierson blamed Obama for the death of the fallen soldier. Humayun Khan was killed five years before Obamatook office.

"It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagement that probably cost [Capt. Khans]life," she said on CNN this month.

The nonpartisanPolitiFact ranked her claim "pants on fire" its harshest critiquein terms of false statements.

The comedian has become a fixture of the Rio Olympics after she began hilariously live tweeting the games from her living room last week.

NBC then invited Jones to the games, finally giving her the chance to meet the athletes she had been admiring from behind a screen, including Walsh Jennings.

Leslie bowed down as the volleyball superstars first walked toward her, but Walsh Jennings quickly lifted her up and straight into a hug.

"Please don"t let me embarrass myself."

Jones caught judo and trampoline before she headed to beach volleyball, watching the men"s match before Walsh Jennings and Ross stepped into the sand.

"Where are the speedos?" she inquired as she watched the men play.

Jones made sure to send her love to USA"s swimming team, as she had to miss Phelps" and Ledecky"s final individual races in Rio to catch Walsh Jennings.

"Slay all muthaf*****g day!" she wrote after another golden night for Team USA in the pool, including a world record by Ledecky.

"USA made that pool their b***h!"

Jones got to cheer on Phelps on Thursday night in Team USA"s personal cheering section, thanks to his teammate Conor Dwyer.

Jones shared her excitement on Twitter as she arrived at the Rio Olympics on Thursday. The SNL star was invited to cover the Games after her enthusiastic Tweets

It was there that she met Olympic gold medalist Lily King and hung out with massive swim fan (and Academy Award-winning actor) MatthewMcConaughey.

Jones, 48, started off her first day in Rio by catching the incredible women"s gymnastics all-around competition, where Simone Biles took gold.

"I just watched USA win a gold and silver medal! Yeah, I just did that!" Leslie said.

"Them folks down there got real medals, yo. So if I ran on the floor and snatched one of the medals, do you think they would beat my a***?," she joked.

The SNL star shared her amazement after arriving in Rio earlier on Thursday.

"We"re going through the streets of Rio... it"s crazy!" she said."It"s official y"all. I"m in Rio."

"We"re on our way to gymnastics, Man. We about to go see the USA kill it, man. That"s what we do."

Leslie quickly headed to the gymnastics as she cheered on Aly Raisman and Simone Biles as they won gold and silver in the all-around individual competition

"If I ran on the floor and snatched one of the medals, do you think they would beat my a***?" she joked after watching Simone and Aly claim gold and silver

"I really feel like there"s a lot of sexuals up in there," she joked while driving by the Olympic Village where athletes live during the competition

Driving past the Rio coastline, she added: "I"m telling you right now, the camera is not doing no justice for how beautiful this water is."

The actress kept the silly videos coming as she showed off her hotel, bragged about driving in the "Olympic lane" and speculated about all the hookups happening at the Olympic Village.

"Yeah b***ches, I am in Rio," she said, sharing video of her hotel"s pool."This is how we do it in Rio! I don"t see no d**n Zika nowhere," she said.

Arriving at the Olympic Village, the stand-up speculated about all the action going on between athletes, and joked about getting busted by the tough security.

"450,000 condoms CHEAH!", Leslie captioned a video of the apartment towers.

"Where all the athletes live at, yo. It"s called the Olympic Village," she explained, adding: "I really feel like there"s a lot of sexuals up in there. A lot of sexuals."

The Ghostbusters star was invited to cover the games by NBC after enthusiasticly live-Tweeting the Olympics

After she finally arrived at the gymnastics, the Top Five actress was quick to share the view from her seats and plot to get closer to the athletes.

"I am like actually here, watching these lovely gymnasts," she marveled, adding: "I"m trying to get a closer seat tho."

"Let"s go Aly! Team USA! Champion!" she cheered as she posted video of the warm-ups and the all-around competition.

The stand-up vet and Olympics die-hard was offered a job covering Rio for NBC after her enthusiastic live-Tweeting and love of the Games went viral last week.

Her coverage of the Games marked a triumphant comeback to Twitter, after Leslie quit the network in June over a torrent of racist and sexist abuse aimed at her by trolls angry that the "Ghostbusters" remake had replaced the original male cast with women.

In Rio, Leslie will attend live swimming, track and field, gymnastics, and beach volleyball, and will meeting athletes and share her passion for the Olympics on-air and online, NBC said.

The SNL star"s hilarious live Tweets of the Olympics from her living room quickly went viral and earned her an invite from NBC to cover the games in Rio

Unrest after deadly Milwaukee Police shooting

Good old fashioned race riot in Milwaukee -- large scale black mob violence

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- City leaders pleaded for calm after violence erupted for several hours Saturday night on Milwaukee"s north side following a man"s fatal shooting by police earlier in the day, with the mayor imploring parents of anyone at the scene to "get them home right now" after at least four businesses burned and one officer was hurt.

At a news conference just after midnight, Mayor Tom Barrett said the situation appeared to be calming after a riotous scene in which as many as 100 protesters skirmished with police, torching a squad car and tossing a brick through the window of another. Police mounted at least two efforts to push the protesters out of an intersection at the heart of the violence.

The unrest began several hours after a man fleeing police after a traffic stop was shot and killed. Police said the man was armed, but it wasn"t clear whether he was pointing the gun or aiming it at officers. Barrett said the man was hit twice, in the chest and arm. Neither his race nor the officer"s was immediately released, nor were they identified.

The shooting was being investigated by the state. The officer was wearing a body camera, Barrett said.

At least three people were arrested in an uprising that Barrett said was driven by social media messages instructing people to congregate in the area.

"We have to have calm," Barrett said at the news conference. "There are a lot of really good people who live in this neighborhood."

Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton echoed Barrett"s plea for help restoring order.

"We understand the frustration people feel with the police community nationally. ... We have to go through the process of finding justice, but we have to be able to restore order to these neighborhoods," Hamilton said. "Please participate in restoring order to these neighborhoods."

Barrett said the 23-year-old man who died was stopped by police for "suspicious activity." Police said earlier that he was carrying a gun that had been stolen in a March burglary in suburban Waukesha.

"This stop took place because two officers ... saw suspicious activity," Barrett said. "There were 23 rounds in that gun that that officer was staring at. I want to make sure we don"t lose any police officers in this community, either."

Police with shields and helmets moved slowly into an intersection after 11 p.m., telling a crowd of about 50 people to disperse. Some threw rocks and other debris at police, who held up their shields. They also threw objects at a business a half-block from the intersection. A nearby traffic light was bent over and bus shelters overturned.

An earlier standoff involved more than 100 people pushing against 20 to 30 officers. Officers got in their cars to leave at one point and some in the crowd started smashing a squad car"s windows. Another police car was set on fire.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that one of its reporters was shoved to the ground and punched.

The businesses that burned included a BMO Harris branch, a BP gas station, an O"Reilly Auto Parts store and a beauty supply store. Firefighters held back from the gas station blaze because of gunfire.

Police said the man who was shot had an arrest record. The 24-year-old officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative duty. The officer has been with the Milwaukee department six years, three as an officer.
