How Germany"s electoral college was set up to prevent another Hitler

Will electors stage an electoral college coup?

When the u.s. electoral college meets on monday, many of its members will have experienced weeks of rising pressure toselect someone other than Donald Trump. The role of the electors has been the focus of controversies for years, with some arguing that they are unnecessary andthat the difference between the public vote and the composition of the electoral college is too big.

Other countries have hadsimilar discussions. The most prominent example might be Germany, where an electoral college was introduced following World War II. The declared aim behind that decision: to prevent the rise of another Adolf Hitler.

Almost 70 percent of Germans would prefer to elect the president directly, according to surveys. The system"s critics argue that the indirect election of the German president is undemocratic, but supporters point to the procedure"sorigins.

German post-war politicians were horrified by the possibility of another fascist populist gaining widespread support among the public. So they decided to make the election of the German president a decision of a Federal Assembly, which only meets for that purpose. It consists of members of parliament and other electors who are nominated by their respective parties.

In total, more than 1,200 members are in Germany"s electoral college.About half of them are nominated by their parties in a particular region of the country, based on the number of residents there.

The comparison between the U.S. and Germany is imperfect, of course: The German president"s powers were largely curtailed following World War II. Today, German presidents mainly fulfill ceremonial tasks, although they can refuse to sign certain bills or are responsible for nominating the chancellor. Compared to U.S. presidents, their role is insignificant.

Before World War II, during the Weimar Republic, the German president was allowed to issue emergency bills and to mostly ignore parliament. In 1933, PresidentPaul von Hindenburg used that leeway and made Adolf Hitler the chancellor of the republic a decision that ultimately empowered Hitler to proceed with thedissolution of democratic institutions as well as government checks and balances.

It was Germany"s first post-war president, liberal politicianTheodor Heuss, who was the strongest advocate for indirect election and curbing presidential powers.

But as in the U.S., pressure to adapt the electoral college has been on the rise in Germany. The country"srecently emerged far-right Alternative fr Deutschland (AfD) party is demanding to reverse many of thechanges that were designed to make German democracy more robust. Among the AfD"s demands are to abolish the electoral college and to allow Germans to vote for their president directly.

For Germany"s mainstream political parties, the current system is more predictable because it allows them to build coalitions and to agree on a president who represents the majority of people.

But as in the U.S., this system has not come withoutsurprises. One Republican elector in the U.S. has said he will not select Trump; Germany"s Federal Assembly has witnessed similar moments. German electors are also not forced to vote for the preferred candidate of the party that nominated them.

In 2004, Bavaria"s Christian Social Union asked PrincessGloria von Thurn undTaxis to elect Horst Khler to become president. Von Thurn und Taxis, a prominent German business executive, decided to vote for another candidate.

Khler became president regardless. Since then, however, the Christian Social Union has refrained frommaking VIPs members of the Federal Assembly and has instead relied on moreloyal supporters.

Raiders clinch first playoff berth since 2002 with win

Michael Crabtree"s Amazing Sideline TD! | Raiders vs. Chargers | NFL Week 15 Highlights

The Raiders (11-3) are playoff-bound after knocking off the injury-riddled Chargers (5-9) on Sunday. Here"s what we learned from Oakland"s 19-16 victory over San Diego:

1. A loyal and vocal bunch, Raiders fans have been through h**l this century. No longer. Sunday"s victory sealed Oakland"s first playoff berth since 2002 and helped them regain sole possession of the AFC West after Kansas City (10-4) fell to the Titans. With games remaining against the Colts and Broncos, the Raiders simply need to hold serve to nab a coveted bye in the AFC.

2. Time to fret over Oakland"s offense? Instead, let"s credit an active Chargers defense that looked like it still had plenty to play for this season. Sunday"s showdown served as a wire-to-wire grind for a raiders team that has posted 30-plus points in seven of 13 outings, second only to the high-flying Falcons. Coming off his worst game of the year, Carr threw for just 213 yards in a tilt that saw reliable kicker Sebastian Janikowski punch home four field goals. Oakland struggled early with two uncharacteristic turnovers on a day that saw no Raiders receiver cross the 60-yard barrier. The most hopeful note for Oakland was that Carr -- throwing exclusively out of the shotgun for the third straight game because of a dislocated pinky -- showed no visible discomfort and threw the ball well, save for a costly first-half pick.

3. Philip Rivers shook off last week"s five-turnover implosion to keep San Diego alive until the bitter end. Then disaster struck, with the wily veteran tossing a game-ending interception to cover man Reggie Nelson with 1:37 left on the clock. The giveaway put an ugly exclamation mark on a game that saw Rivers -- 17 of 30 for 206 yards -- rip through Oakland"s secondary for much of the second half. Along the way he threw a 47-yard touchdown strike to Travis Benjamin and another score to rookie tight end Hunter Henry that notched a 16-13 lead in the third quarter. That lead, as with so many other Chargers games this season, was not meant to be.

4. Raiders running back Latavius Murray continued his strong stretch run with 81 yards off 13 carries. It was encouraging to see Oakland use the ground game to pound away at San Diego with 149 yards at a healthy 5.1 yards per tote. They"ll need that balance come January.

5. Have the Chargers quit on coach Mike McCoy? No way. Despite a whopping 16 players on injured reserve -- second most in the NFL -- San Diego played with energy. Some have pointed to the Bolts as a team that could tumble next week against the winless Browns. That feels like comprehensive nonsense. When the Chargers are hot, they can hang with anyone.

6. Was this the final Raiders-Bolts game in San Diego? If so, these embattled Chargers fans deserve much more than this unforgiving fate.

NFL scores 2016: Live results, highlights, news, and more

Calais Campbell Scoops & Scores Off the Drew Brees Sack! | NFL Week 15 Highlights

Week 14 of the 2016 nfl season is officially in the books after another exciting slate of games across the league.

On Monday night, the New England Patriots hung on for a 30-23 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. A pair of fumbles on special teams almost cost New England the game, but it hung on to deliver a huge blow to the Ravens chances of winning the AFC North.

In the early games on Sunday, the Houston Texans took a step ahead of the Colts in the AFC South with a 22-17 victory over Indianapolis. Of course they are still tied in first place with Tennessee thanks to a solid win by the Titans over the Broncos, 13-10.

Business really picked up in the late afternoon slate when the red-hot Green Bay Packers had their way with the Seattle Seahawks at a frozen Lambeau Field. Russell Wilson had the first five-interception game of his career.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers outlasted the New Orleans Saints in a defensive battle, keeping pace with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South. Atlanta dominated out west against the Rams in LA.

Stop me if you heard this before: Sunday Night Football featured an NFC East matchup. It was a defensive struggle between the Cowboys and Giants, with New York prevailing for a season sweep of Dallas.

Here are all the latest scores, highlights, injury news, and much more on a busy day of football.

Full scores and schedule (all times Eastern)

Kansas City Chiefs 21, Oakland Raiders 13

Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Buffalo Bills 20

Carolina Panthers 28, San Diego Chargers 16

Cincinnati Bengals 23, Cleveland Browns 10

Detroit Lions 20, Chicago Bears 17

Houston Texans 22, Indianapolis Colts 17

Minnesota Vikings 25, Jacksonville Jaguars 16

Miami Dolphins 26, Arizona Cardinals 23

Washington 27, Philadelphia Eagles 22

Tennessee Titans 13, Denver Broncos 10

New York Jets 23, San Francisco 49ers 17 (OT)

Green Bay Packers 38, Seattle Seahawks 10

Atlanta Falcons 42, Los Angeles Rams 14

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16, New Orleans Saints 11

New York Giants 10, Dallas Cowboys 7

New England Patriots 30, Baltimore Ravens 23

Cowboys/Giants highlights

Dez Bryants only catch of the game came with two minutes remaining, and was immediately fumbled away.

Odell Beckham Jr. sprinted by the Cowboys for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, then did the moonwalk in the end zone.

Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey could only laugh after his 55-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar and missed.

Eli Manning fumbled because Giants tackle Ereck Flowers barely even blocked a Cowboys defender.

That first quarter touchdown pass to Terrance Williams might have been the Cowboys easiest TD of the season.

Ezekiel Elliott of the playoff-bound Cowboys tried to eat snowflakes before their game against the Giants.

Elliott wasnt alone several Cowboys had fun in the snow before the game.

Tom Brady got very angry at a water bottle after blowing a possible TD pass.

Shea McClellins hops were on display when he blocked a Ravens field goal.

The Patriots special teams had some fumbling issues against Baltimore.

Earlier highlights from Sunday

Aaron Rodgers was 18-for-23 with three passing touchdowns in Green Bays blowout of the Seahawks. With 10 TDs and no interceptions over his last four games, Rodgers is playing at an MVP level again for the Packers.

The Buccaneers win over the Saints has them tied atop the NFC South with the Falcons, and has Tampa Bay looking like legitimate contenders.

After San Francisco blew a 14-0 lead against the Jets to lose in overtime, Chip Kelly now has a worse record than Jim Tomsula as head coach of the 49ers.

The Rams loss to the Falcons guaranteed a fifth straight losing season for head coach Jeff Fisher.

Falcons LB Vic Beasley had a Von Miller-type game against the Rams, with three sacks.

Packers TE Richard Rodgers made an amazing catch and held on despite taking a cheap shot to the head from K.J. Wright.

Russell Wilson was looking forward to returning to the cold of Wisconsin, but be careful what you wish for he threw five interceptions for the first time in his career against the Packers.

Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was the latest player to trash Terrelle Pryor, whom he called garbage.

Ben Roethlisberger laughed off accusations of deflated footballs, says Steelers use Nerf b***s.

This is probably the horrible start that Rams fans expected in this weeks game.

David Johnson has had 13 games with 100-plus total yards. That ties the NFL record!

The Eagles had to dig deep in their long snapper depth chart on this field goal.

Matthew Stafford weaves around foes, plows over teammates on his way to a TD.

This strip sack by Jadaveon Clowney is what defensive coordinators dream of.

DeSean Jackson channeled Willie Mays on this over-the-shoulder catch.

If youre going to make an incredible catch, you might as well make it look like this.

Heres the story of Ryan Tannehill and the ugliest little pass attempt of all time.

Cheap shots are the worst. So are stupid fights between the Broncos and Titans.

That cheap shot was so dirty that Aqib Talib wants to fight Harry Douglas, in their agents office.

The Browns show everyone how NOT to run a flea flicker.

Arent you supposed to throw the flag on the guy who committed the penalty?

Block that kick, Browns! Block that kick! Uh... lateral that ball! Lateral that ball!

The first career interception has to be one of the sweetest, especially against Big Ben.

Injuries

Giants running back Shane Vereen left in the second quarter with a concussion.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers limped off the field late in their blowout of the Seahawks.

49ers receiver Torrey Smith suffered a concussion against the Jets.

Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb was carted off the field with an ankle injury in the second quarter against Seattle, though he returned before halftime.

The Dolphins feared QB Ryan Tannehill has a torn ACL, but it was a sprain.

Darren Sproles took a dirty hit to the head and did not return for Philly.

Joey Bosa left the Chargers game to get concussion evaluation and did not return.

Matthew Stafford reportedly dislocated his thumb joint and tore ligaments in his middle finger in a win over the Bears, and will have to wear a glove for the remainder of the season.

Melvin Gordon was carted off the field in the Chargers game with a hip injury. Hes hopeful h**l be back this season.

Watch "The Sound Of Music" Live Online, Listen To Streaming Soundtrack, Cast And Von Trapp Family Interviews [Video]

The Sound Of Music

ABC will air the beloved musical The Sound of Music tonight at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, and you can watch the movie streaming live online through ABC Live. Based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family, the Sound of Music began as a book, was turned into a musical, and several movies were developed from the story. None of the adaptations have been as successful as the Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer led movie that won five Oscars. The Sound of Music was released in 1965 and has a current 8.0 IMDB rating. The movie has proved to be timeless and is as beloved today as it was when it first graced the silver screen. The Sound of Music tells the story of love, overcoming heartbreak and grief, and overcoming challenges in order to do the right thing and live by faith. Learn more about the Sound of Music at TCM. For many, watching the Sound of Music at Christmas time is a holiday tradition. ABC routinely airs the movie before Christmas, but some, even though they appreciate the tradition, dont necessarily understand it. There are several online threads where viewers have ongoing discussions as to why the Sound of Music is considered a Christmas movie, such as this Yahoo Questions thread. The film was released in March 1965, and there are no Christmas trees or carols heard. The movie centers around a wayward nun, Maria, who left the convent to work as a governess for the Von Trapp family. Other than the Catholic presence, Mother Superior and convent, there is little in the film depicting religion or Christmas. The movie is family oriented and contains a wonderful, heartfelt message and that might be why it is associated with Christmas. Maybe ABC simply chose to play it during Christmas because they like the movie. No one knows the exact reason, but there is no doubt that a tradition has been established. ABC shared the hashtag #MyBestHolidayMemory and asked the Sound of Music viewers to share their favorite holiday memories associated with the movie.

Michael Che on SNL, Trump, and why he thinks one man can"t ruin everything

Donald Trump Christmas Cold Open - SNL 12/17/2016

As a Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che helps tie Saturday Night Live to current events. Although the show has topical sketches, Update is its heart and gives the cast a way to shoot pointed barbs at even the unfunniest bits of the weeks news. Alongside Colin Jost, Che both delivers the news and acts as a foil for Updates visiting characters, a skill he sharpened during his time as a correspondent on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.

Before Che was on either of those shows, he was a stand-up working New Yorks club circuit. Thats something Che will return to this weekend when his one-hour special, Michael Che Matters, premieres on Netflix (read The A.V. Clubs review here). In it, Che riffs on everything from Donald trump, who he thinks deserves a year to really f**k the presidency up, to religion. The A.V. Club talked to Che about his special as well as the aforementioned president-elect.

The A.V. Club: Your special was filmed before the election, and in it you joke about how crazy you think Donald Trump is, saying that his presidency will be funny. Do you still feel that way?

Michael Che: I guess hes joke-worthy more than ever because hes the president. I think Donald Trump being president is more about where the country is at as opposed to it actually being about Donald Trump. It feels like going to couples therapy and really finding out how your other half feels.

AVC: You have a joke in the special where you say you think it would be fun to watch him f**k around for a year. Are you looking forward to that?

MC: Well, maybe Im naive, but I still have a little bit of faith in the structure of the United States government and thinking that one man cant ruin everything. I dont know if its just because Im hopeful or cynical, but I just dont think one man can change everything. Its just like I didnt think Obama could save the country by himself. I dont think Trump can ruin the country all by himself. I dont know. I hope Im right.

AVC: There is some comic relief to be found in the sheer amount of flailing hes been doing, just in the sense that you have to laugh or else youll cry.

MC: I dont think he knew exactly what being a president was. Just like anybody, hes not in government. Hes not a politician, so theres no way he knew exactly what a presidents day-to-day was. So I think the more hes finding out, the more hes realizing. Theres a little bit of comedy in him thinking, Holy s**t, why am I doing this? Im a 70-year-old billionaire. I could have just lived the next 10 to 20 years of my life happy and doing nothing.

AVC: Hes going to take 10 to 20 years off of his life in the next four years.

MC: With a 70-year-old persons life, it might not be four years. Of course, Im not wishing death on our president, but

AVC: Whats life like for you on the road?

MC: I dont like to travel. I go out. When you do stand up, you travel a lot. Just working out. I dont really enjoy it. I like New York. Theres nothing really like New York. Everything just becomes a worse version of New York.

I just dont like to travel. I dont like airports. I dont like living out of a suitcase. I dont like finding out where the CVS is and where the place is thats good to eat and making friends for a week. I dont like any of that stuff.

AVC: How often do you get out to work on material in New York?

MC: As often as possible. I like to go as soon as I have a bit. I just find a place to go. Thats the cool thing about working on [SNL] is that a lot of clubs will let you go up on a moments notice. Thats one of the perks. You can go anywhere in New York. Theres always something to do in New York. Theres always a place to eat no matter what time it is. Theres always a place to work, a place to drink. Its conducive to my lifestyle. I dont know how to drive a car, so I like to be able to walk places.

AVC: Do you think youll ever learn how to drive a car?

MC: I hope so, because I can afford one now so, itd be nice to have a nice, obnoxious car. Right now, I cant drive it, so its useless.

AVC: Taking driving classes as an adult is a weird construct.

MC: I would love to know how to drive. I just dont feel like learning.

AVC: When youre kid its like, Im going to take these classes. Im going to learn how to do it. Im going to sit in a car with a strange instructor for hours on end. But now, as an adult, and especially for you, probably, because youre on television, you dont want to do that. You dont want to make small talk with someone.

MC: Its not so much the small talk. I have friends that tell me theyll teach me, but once you get past about 25, 30, youre just like, Eh. I think I know everything I need to know right now. Even if I dont, Im just going to play this hand. Your thirst for learning isnt the same as when youre 17.

AVC: Do you think youre still learning things, even at 33?

MC: Im absolutely learning. Culturally, things are different. Ive learned a lot being on SNL. Ive learned a lot just being around people who grew up so differently from me, which is cool. It teaches you how to be a lot more tolerant. The bigger your world is, the more tolerant and accepting you become, because you have friends from all walks of life. You learn to be a little bit less selfish.

AVC: Your stand-up special is a big production. You built a stage in a warehouse and have a live band. Why did you decide to go with that sort of set?

MC: As a guy comedian, your special is probably the closest thing to the excitement of a wedding day. Its your first one, and you want it to be perfect, and you want it to mean something. You want it to look good.

When I watch a comedy special, I just dont want to see a guy and a curtain or just a comedian and a stool. You want it to seem like something. You want to feel like, Man I wish I was there that night. Or, Man, I dont know where they shot this. Just something more pleasing than just the jokes.

Working with Oz [Rodriguez], the director, we were looking for different places to shoot and thinking about what kind of venues could work. First he was thinking about doing a standing room, but we backed off the standing room and asked, Why not think outside the box and do it in an empty warehouse? Wed give people drinks, throw up the stage, and get some music going and make it fun. And thats what we did.

AVC: You do a lot of crowd work, too, and that makes viewers feel like they want to be or that they are there.

MC: Yeah, that was exactly the point. We wanted it to look like, Next time this guy comes to town, I want to go to that. Every special is just a commercial for the live show, I think. It makes fans want to come see you when you come to town.

Everything comes down to that. Anything you do on TVany special, any late-night appearanceeverything comes down to seeing your show live when it comes to town.

AVC: I talked to Pete Davidson not too long ago, and I asked him, Whats the biggest you want to be? Do you want to be playing stadiums? Do you want to be playing clubs forever? How big do you want to be? Do you want to have Trump supporters at your shows who might not laugh at your jokes? Whats the dream?

MC: First of all, of course I want Trump supporters at my show. And of course I want them laughing. You want everybody to think its funny.

Thats one of the things about comedy that annoys me the most from a comedian perspective. Comedy has gotten so segregated. Now its like if you dont agree with somebody, you probably arent going to like their jokes. I think comedians are starting to write for their audience and not towards the country. Go listen to Richard Pryor and George Carlin and guys like that, who were working when the country was less segregated. I know thats weird to say because it was the 60s, but everybody got the same news. Everybody got the same comedy. Everybody watched the same late-night show. It was way less segregated. Now everyone finds their own news channel and their own comedy and their own brand of humor. I want to get back to when everybody could listen to one thing, and youve got to write with everybody considered. I think the best way to do that is to really Its about you [the audience]. But to answer the question, I would love to be able to play anywhere, but to me the sweet spot is clubs and theaters, just because I feel like you lean in to tell a joke. You dont back up.
