Britain"s Queen Elizabeth misses Christmas church service due to "heavy cold"

The Queen at 90 (Full Episode)

By Philip Noble

SANDRINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Britain"s Queen Elizabeth, 90, missed a traditional Christmas church service on Sunday for the first time in decades due to a heavy cold, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

Elizabeth, the world"s longest-reigning living monarch, and her husband Prince Philip, 95, both suffering what the Palace described as heavy colds this week, delayed the journey to their Sandringham country residence in eastern England by a day, traveling there by helicopter on Thursday.

The queen has attended the Christmas service at the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene in Sandringham every year since the family started celebrating Christmas there in 1988.

Before then, the family spent Christmas at Windsor where Elizabeth attended a service since the mid-1960s. It was unclear if Elizabeth had ever missed a Christmas Day service before.

Philip was driven to church and walked in unaided, a Reuters photographer said, while Prince Charles, heir to the throne, walked to the church with his wife Camilla and other members of the family.

"The queen continues to recover from a heavy cold and will stay indoors to assist with her recovery," a palace spokesman said. "Her Majesty will participate in the Royal Family Christmas celebrations during the day."

Elizabeth"s other children, Anne, Andrew and Edward attended along with Prince Harry, Charles"s second son. Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, was spending Christmas with the parents of his wife, Kate.

After more than six decades on the throne, the queen has cut back on international tours but still regularly performs official duties around Britain, although she said on Tuesday she would reduce such visits.

While Elizabeth"s father, George VI, died at the relatively young age of 56, her mother, known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, lived until 101 and was still appearing in public almost up until her death in 2002.

"GREAT LOVE"

Elizabeth has maintained the popularity of the monarchy despite years of political, social and cultural change since she became Queen Elizabeth II on Feb. 6, 1952, aged just 25.

In a pre-recorded Christmas broadcast, she invoked the example of Jesus and quoted the words of Mother Teresa to praise those who she said did small things with love.

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love," Elizabeth said. "It"s understandable that we sometimes think the world"s problems are so big that we can do little to help."

"On our own, we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice, but the cumulative impact of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we imagine."

Elizabeth, the symbolic head of the Church of England, noted that despite Jesus"s humble beginnings and maligned life, billions of people - including her - rely on his teachings and draw inspiration from his example.

The Times reported on Wednesday that Philip carried out more public engagements last year than did his grandsons William and Harry, and William"s wife Kate combined.

The musical tells the story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. The show features eye-popping production numbers including "Be Our Guest," in which dishes and silverware take to the stage.

The costumes were made by the Gilbert family, including the full body costume of the beast, played by Tristan Shuler.

Belle is played by Tasia Gilbert, and her unwanted suitor, the arrogant Gaston, is played by Christopher Ryland. Leading the transformed household servants as Lumiere and Cogsworth are Jewel and Jorne Gilbert, while Ali Santos plays the kind Mrs. Potts.

Other actors include Brady Love, Jenna Atkinson, Madison Cerniglia and Andy Alulis.

The Gilbert family also includes Taryn and Teara. The siblings have been producing shows to raise money for Blue Star Mothers of Lehigh Valley"s emergency fund, which helps local military families with bills, travel expenses and other needs. The family"s first production was "Cinderella" in 2011.

Since then, Sing for America has raised $45,000, which has paid for rent, food, heating and electric bills, plane tickets to see a wounded soldier before surgery, and even Christmas presents for military families.

Bucks County Playhouse"s final phase of renovations

Bucks County Playhouse was renovated and reopened in 2012 after being closed for two years. Now it has started the final phase of renovations.

The playhouse"s expansion will transform the theater"s back deck into 3,750 square feet of lobby space. It will also serve as a bar and cafe that can host private groups up to 140 people. And the playhouse plans to offer post-show dessert performances showcasing young performers.

"Our growing audiences will now have adequate lobby and restroom facilities, in addition to expanded cafe services to welcome groups and patrons of the theater," says Alexander Fraser, producing director.

Only four seasons after reopening, the playhouse"s summer season broke box office records with Robert Harling"s "Steel Magnolias" directed by Marsha Mason, which was the highest-grossing play in Bucks County Playhouse history, and "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story" directed by Hunter Foster, which became the playhouse"s highest-grossing musical.

The playhouse has continued its reputation as a place for out-of-town tryouts for Broadway. Its 2012 production of "Misery," based on the Stephen King novel, opened on Broadway with Bruce Willis in 2015; and its 2013 production of Terrence McNally"s "Mothers and Sons" opened on Broadway 2014 and received two Tony nominations.

Larry Keller, mayor of New Hope, says he has more visitors and increased revenue in the tourist town since the playhouse reopened. The playhouse is run by four Broadway producers Fraser; Robyn Goodman, executive producer; and Stephen Kocis and Josh Fiedler, producers.

"The playhouse"s return has revitalized New Hope, drawing new business investment in town including a new Riverhouse at Odette"s and Landmark Hospitality"s renovations of The Logan Inn and Hotel du Village," Keller says. "All these projects are proof of how dedicated and committed individuals can make a positive difference in our community."

A new nonprofit group, Playhouse Artists, was created to support Bucks County Playhouse and its mission to stimulate, support, inspire and celebrate the performing arts in the New Hope region.

The playhouse remains open during the renovations.

Currently on stage is "Murder for Two: Holiday Edition," an adaptation of the off-Broadway musical mystery hit, through Dec. 31.

In the two-man show, everyone is a suspect, but the twist is one actor investigates the crime and the other plays all the suspects. They both play the piano.

The book, music and lyrics are by Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair. In this production, Kinosian plays all the supects. Brett Ryback, who was in the original off-Broadway cast of "Murder for Two," plays the investigator Marcus.

The holiday edition, directed by Jeremy Lapp, follows the basic story of the original but is reset and redressed in a holiday theme. With the action now set in rural New England on Christmas Eve, the creators have created some holiday back stories for characters and pepper the narrative with seasonal jokes.

"Murder for Two: Holiday Edition," 2 and 8 p.m. Friday and Dec. 30; 2 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 26, 28, 31; 7:30 p.m. Dec. 27 and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 29. Bucks County Playhouse, 70 S. Main St., New Hope. Tickets: $30-$69. 215-862-2121, buckscountyplayhouse.org.

Welsh workers reveal what it"s like to work on Boxing Day

BOXING DAY - typujemy świąteczną kolejkę Premier League!

A recent petition calling for shops to close on Boxing Day received hundreds of thousands of signatures.

Set up by baker Ian Lapworth, it called for an end to the commercialisation of Christmas and struck a chord with people around the country.

The Change.org petition addressed to Prime Minister Theresa May gathered over 233,000 names, was coupled with another on the UK Governments website that received over 142,000, and the issue was subsequently debated in parliament.

But what is it really like for those who have to go in to work the morning after Christmas Day?

Geoff Doolan, 68, from Swansea , works at Moustache, which is set to open for the second Boxing Day running.

Huge queues at Boxing Day sales

Speaking about last years opening, he said: I must admit its a day we didnt anticipate being so busy.

He said it imposed on his free time, adding: Working after Christmas day has been strange for us, but as an independent shop we need to be open.

I must admit we get our regular customers and we have an interesting day.

People are on holiday and expect for shops to be open.

A retail worker from Powys, who doesnt receive premium pay for working Boxing Day, said: Boxing day is my Christmas Day, when I get to spend time with my children.

Having not opened on Boxing Day in the past I have now been informed that all stores must open.

Another Swansea shop worker said: My partner is working on Christmas Day but not Boxing Day.

However I am working Boxing Day, so we will not have a Christmas day off together with our son.

To have two days off over Christmas would feel like a break, which we deserve after working hard over the Christmas period to make sure the customers get their products and are happy.

What"s the worst Christmas present you"ve ever been given

An Usdaw member from West Wales, who doesnt ask to book Boxing Day off because it would not be allowed, said: For three years Ive not experienced a proper Christmas with my family.

I have family who I want to see and spend time with yet with my work hours over Christmas Eve and Boxing Day I dont see them.

Christmas Day to me just feels like a normal day. I dont feel excited because I know Im working the Christmas period without a break.

Lewis Thompson, 24, from Cardiff, works for Jack Wills.

He described working on Boxing Day at the store in the city centre as manic, but added: I have no problem with working it if I have to, but would obviously rather spend it with family.

He explained: My hours arent bad this year but in previous jobs I would work up to Christmas Eve night and then on Boxing Day morning, so I couldnt do much.

When I worked in Waitrose we would close because they were owned by John Lewis - that is the way it should be everywhere.

"You cant really relax on Christmas Day"

Another Cardiff shopworker, who wont finish work until 10pm on Christmas Eve and will be back in work at 7am on Boxing Day, said: You cant really relax on Christmas Day because youre cooking and looking after your family, then its all over and businesses as usual on Boxing Day.

Megan, 23, from Newport, who works at Ann Summers, said she doesnt mind working on the day because shes new to the company, but said: Ill wait and see what happens this year.

She said working on Boxing Day was not the best, adding: I tend not to drink or celebrate too much because Ive always worked.

Another Newport shop worker said: It makes me angry because I dont get to spend time with my family and friends on Boxing Day, and I cant relax on Christmas Day with the thought of going in the next day.

"Im exhausted by Boxing Day"

Also I spend so much time in work in the run up to Christmas, Im then exhausted by Boxing Day.

A working mum from Denbighshire, who will be in store on Boxing Day, said: No childcare on Boxing Day means extra stress trying to accommodate my children and leaves my youngest distraught.

The only time our store is closed is Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, so as a single parent I miss spending so much time with my family.

The Change.org petition said: Shops, especially supermarkets, do not need to open on Boxing Day.

Whilst not everyone may see christmas as a religious holiday, it should be respected as such, and retail workers (who work so hard on the run up to the big day) given some decent family time to relax and enjoy the festivities like everyone else.

Most retail workers are on the go up to Christmas Eve then back on Boxing Day.

Sometimes they have no choice. We managed 30 and 40 years ago when shops were sometimes shut for a whole week.

Lets get back to the way it was. Forget making money for one day, lets concentrate on making more memories with the ones we love.

93% of shopworkers do not want to be in work on Boxing Day

The shopworkers union Usdaw also joined in support of the petition, and said 93% of shopworkers do not want to be in work on Boxing Day.

A spokesman for the union said: Staff in retail work very long hours in the run-up to Christmas.

Our members tell us that they need time off to recuperate as well as to spend time with their family and friends.

One shopper grabbing the bargains in last year"s Boxing Day sales

That is especially important when they have children for whom Christmas is such a special time.

Usdaw is seeking the longest possible break for retail staff over the Christmas and New Year period to provide shopworkers with a breather during this very busy time.

Usdaw won the campaign for legislation to stop large stores from opening on Christmas Day and we are calling for small stores to follow suit and stay shut.

We are also calling for shops to be closed on Boxing Day and New Years Day, as well as early closing by 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

Parliament debated the topic on December 12, but it was rejected by MPs, who said Boxing Day helped drive competition, productivity and the local economy, as well as create jobs.

The Government response read: We do not believe it is for central government to tell businesses how to run their shops or how best to serve their customers. Therefore we are not proposing to ban shops from opening on Boxing Day.

Viewers curse Christmas as BBC and ITV air Frozen and The Lion King at the same time

Lion cubs meet dad

When you have to decide between The Lion King and Frozen, you know it"s going to be a bad day that isn"t going to get any easier.

After filling their bellies with more turkey, goose and hams than anybody who cares about their waistline should consume, viewers were left aghast on Christmas Day as they were forced to choose between two titans of cinema.

Having already done battle this year with Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor, BBC One and ITV were at it again with family movies threatening to split families in half.

Queen Elsa is the star of FrozenThe Lion King is the best cartoon ever (Photo: Internet Unknown)

On BBC One there was Frozen, and on ITV it was all about The Lion King, and fans of both films were fuming at the first world problem of picking just one film to watch.

One person tweeted: "The big question of the day is Frozen or The Lion King?," as another posted: "Lion King vs Frozen Old school vs New school Simba vs Elsa Christmas Day just got interesting , Surely there"s only one winner here?"

Another wrote: "Putting The Lion King up against Frozen on Christmas Day for families is just taking the p**s. BBC ITV get a grip ffs."

Some people had already made their decision clear and were going with the classic Lion King.

The Lion King IS the circle of life

"IF YOU DARE WATCH FROZEN OVER LION KING, JUST BLOCK ME RIGHT NOW. HOW CAN YOU BE SUCH A DIABOLICAL HUMAN BEING," wrote one Simba fan.

Another added: "Mufasa didn"t die for you lot to watch Frozen over Lion King on Christmas Day."

Is Frozen really a classic?Olaf is the most annoying Disney character ever

Well, we don"t know what the big broadcasters were thinking by putting these two amazing films up against each other, but we can only assume they enjoy seeing us all squeal in pain.

Usually, we"d always pick The Lion King over anything else, but can we deal with all those commercial breaks? Then again there is no character in Disney history more annoying than Olaf... apart from Jar Jar Binx.

Ravens vs. Steelers 2016: Time, TV schedule for NFL Christmas Day football

Ben Roethlisberger Leads Epic Game-Winning Drive! | Ravens vs. Steelers | NFL Week 16 Highlights

The Pittsburgh Steelers can earn a spot in the postseason for the third consecutive year, and all they have to do is beat the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day. Thats a tall order, even when the Steelers are good and the Ravens are bad. The AFC North rivalry between the two results in some of the most competitive games in football.

On Sunday, the Steelers will play host to the Ravens as they look to lock up the AFC North title. The game will be broadcast on the NFL Network, and will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET. A live stream will be available via NFL.com, but it will require login credentials from a participating cable or satellite provider.

While the Steelers only need to beat the Ravens on Sunday to secure the division and a spot in the playoffs, the Ravens need a bit more to happen. First, theyll need to beat the Steelers, but they also will need to beat the Cincinnati Bengals in their regular season finale, and theyll need more help on top of that.

The Steelers struggled during the middle part of the season, but theyve kicked things into high gear since then, winning each of their last five games. That streak includes a quality win over the New York Giants, a legitimately tough team. It also includes a win over the Cleveland Browns, a team they will play a second time in Week 17 to close out their regular season.

Baltimore has won three of its last four games, with the loss coming to the New England Patriots in Week 14. Their last outing was a 27-26 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Ravens won the first meeting between the two teams earlier in the season. Ben Roethlisberger, who was coming off an injury, completed 23 of 45 passes for 254 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Joe Flacco had similar numbers, completing 18 of 30 passes for 241 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Neither team managed to break 50 yards rushing.

But the Ravens still won the game, 21-14, thanks to a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and a massive 95-yard touchdown from Flacco to wide receiver Mike Wallace. It was a chaotic game between two teams that looked very evenly matched, and we could be in store for more of that.

Either team could be low-key dangerous in the postseason, but for now, things are definitely trending in the direction of the Steelers. They seem like the more dangerous team right now and running back LeVeon Bell has been playing inspired football. If they beat the Ravens on Sunday, then they can go into Week 17 feeling relatively confident and comfortable heading into the postseason.

Below is all you need to watch Sundays action. It will be the first of two games on the day, with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs facing off on Sunday night football.

NBA Christmas schedule: Your guide to watching the NBA"s signature showcase

BEST Of NBA Christmas From Past 10 Years!

The NBA makes Christmas the best basketball holiday, but that doesnt mean its easy. Especially for those who celebrate and have young children. Five marquee games means about 13 hours of basketball in 16 non-sleep hours. In some cases, its too much. Were here to help you balance time with your basketball family and your real family.

(Apologies in advance for the U.S.-centricism with regards to time zones.)

MUST WATCH

Warriors at Cavaliers, 2:30 p.m. ET, ABC

Why you have to watch this: Best two teams in the league, hated rivals with lots of personal beef, the last two champions who each beat the other in the others gym to win the title, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Draymond Green, Kevin Love, Klay Thompson ... I mean, seriously. This is just layers of great entertainment.

Why you can skip it: I do not recommend skipping this, but if you must: these two teams have played each other 17 times in the past two years and are due for 4-7 more battles this June. This is more like a Game of Thrones episode than a feature film.

This is more like a Game of Thrones episode than a feature film.

How to work it: In the East and Central Time Zones, were looking at an early afternoon tip extending to the cusp of evening. This is prime appetizer time. This is also prime go ride your new bikes, kids time. Or: Sure, you can go ride the neighbors new hoverboard. Even: Video games for three hours in the back room? Good idea! In the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones you might be in a good spot for that traditional Kids Crash Hard Because They Slept So Little nap. Nice work.

Key obstacles: If youre responsible for preparing dinner or helping out in the kitchen, this might be trouble. Plan accordingly. Also, some children like their parents to actually play with them. Heres to halftime.

HIGH PRIORITYTimberwolves at Thunder, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

Why you have to watch this: The Timberpups are starting to put it together on defense, and have the electric Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, and Zach LaVine to drop jaws. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook is putting up absurd, historic numbers almost every night. Put all this on national TV in a primetime Christmas game and were going to see some fireworks.

Why you can skip it: These teams are in the same division and play four times a year. Westbrook is spectacular every night and on TV a lot. The Wolves are 9-19.

How to work it: This is probably post-dinner (or at least late dinner) in the East and Central Time Zones. Depending on their ages, the kids might be getting to bed near the tip or around halftime. Are you a board game or cards family? Set that table up in the room with the TV and claim a chair with a clear view. Are you getting blitzed with friends over? Take it easy until the third quarter.

Key obstacles: In the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones, this is probably a dinner overlap issue. Do your best! Vine isnt dead yet! This game is gonna end around 10:30 or 11 Eastern time, so if you didnt get a nap in, this is also trouble.

SHOCKINGLY COMPELLINGCeltics at Knicks, Noon ET, ESPN

Why you have to watch this: The Knicks and Celtics are both good! This game actually has real playoff tiebreaker ramifications. Plus we have Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Isaiah Thomas to provide some sweet, sweet highlights.

Why you can skip it: These early games on Christmas or otherwise are usually fairly sloppy. (When youre used to working at 7 every night and you have to work at noon one day on a holiday, nonetheless things get wonky.) Plus, both teams are on national TV a lot, so you have plenty of opportunities to see the exciting players if you miss this one.

How to work it: In the East and Central regions, the adrenaline rush of the morning has worn off and the kids might be sleeping or in a zombie state. In the West, this might cut into fun-with-kids time. It might be too early a wake-up if you party hard Christmas Eve. Or, it might work beautifully.

Key obstacles: If you will be around football people, the NFL schedule might be a source of conflict. You should be able to convince even hardcore football fans that Cavs-Warriors is unmissable. Celtics-Knicks will be a tougher debate.

Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images CRUCIALLY FLAWEDBulls at Spurs, 5 p.m. ET, ABC

Why you have to watch this: Jimmy Butler vs. Kawhi Leonard. That is all.

Why you can skip it: The Bulls are strange and often disorienting to watch. The Spurs do not have a compelling play style right now. San Antonio is much better than Chicago. This game has 88-81 written all over it.

How to work it: This is going to hit traditional dinner hours in the East and Central regions and the afternoon swoon out West. If you really care about this game youre probably a Bulls or Spurs fans, in which case you can rally the crowd youre with to tune in. Otherwise, pick your spots.

Key obstacles: Rajon Rondo, frankly. He is personally making this game less than compelling.

DICE ROLLClippers at Lakers, 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

Why you must watch this: The weirdo nightcap is a Christmas tradition, and whats more important than tradition? Plus, the Lakers are the most exciting terrible team in the nba and the Clippers are just so pretty to watch.

Why you can skip it: No one will judge you if you miss it. No one. Especially in the East and Central regions. If Chris Paul doesnt play due to a hamstring injury, this game becomes less compelling because Blake Griffin is already hurt. Also, you will have seen plenty of Paul via the insurance ads during games all day.

How to work it: Kids should be asleep and visitors should be gone.

Key obstacles: You should be asleep and/or gone.

Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images ALTERNATIVE INSIDER PLAN!

I have young kids and host family on Christmas. I love the NBA, but family is the reason I cant wait for Christmas. So heres my plan:

  • Watch Warriors-Cavs, because come on.
  • Flip to ABC or ESPN during downtimes (kids fall asleep, guests go searching for an open store when they realize I forgot to buy beer on Saturday).
  • Activate text notifications from @SBNationNBA so you know when something crazy is happening and/or we get a screenshot of a players magical holiday shoes.
  • Make memories building Lego sets, destroying all opponents at Hungry Hungry Hippos and/or Spades, and drinking beer my guests tracked down after 45 minutes of searching and 45 minutes of waiting in line.
  • Fight against my weak, pathetic eyelids during the second half of Clippers-Lakers.

Best of luck in your quest to balance basketball and Christmas this year.
