What Is a Pangolin? 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

VALENTIN NAPI PROGRAM 🐧 Google Pangolin

The question of What is the most hunted mammal in the world? has been answered. On February 11, Google has chosen to honor the Giant pangolin, the most trafficked animal in the world. According to the search engines blog on the species, they are the only scaly mammal in the world. There are eight different varieties of the animal in Africa and Asia. Today, Google is focusing on the Giant pangolin, which is unique to Africa.

Heres what you need to know:

1. Pangolins Get Their Name From Their Preferred Defensive Position

According to a World Wildlife Fund blog about pangolins says that their name originated as penggulung. A Malay word for a roller. Malay is the language of Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia. Thats the position that the scaly mammal takes when predators are nearby. They roll into a ball with its sharp scales pointed outwards. The defense mechanism has made pangolins easier for poachers to scoop up.

They mainly feed on ants and are known in some circles as scaly anteaters. The pangolins tongue is long and sticky, the have no teeth.

There are eight different species living today. Experts believe there have been more types over the course of the pangolins 80 million years of evolution.

The scales make have made the pangolin difficult for even lions to eat.

The World Wildlife Fund says on their website that pangolins are critically endangered due to the demand for their meat and unique scales. Just over two pounds of pangolin scales go for $3,000 on the black market.

There have been numerous efforts to help save the pangolin. In 2014, a campaign named Roll With Pangolins was launched and endorsed by Prince William. In 2012, wildlife expert Sir David Attenborough chose the pangolin as one of the animals he would save from extinction.

The trade is largely illegal following a treaty that was signed by 180 countries to stop the hunting and trafficking of the mammal. A treaty from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service following the ratification of the treaty says, Between 2013 and 2016, approximately 18,500kg of pangolin scales were seized from illegal shipments originating from African countries, representing between 5,100 39,000 individual pangolins depending on the actual species harvested (the largest pangolins have heavier scales, but more of the smaller pangolins are hunted).

in conjunction with the Google Doodle, the World Wildlife Fund has made it extraordinarily easy to adopt a pangolin. You can adopt here. The basic cost is $25, though there are offers for $55 and $100.

3. In China, a Scandal Involving a Pangolin Dinner Party Is Being Unraveled

As the mammals endangered status is highlighted by Google, news broke from China involving a Pangolin Dinner Party. The BBC reports that the party took place in 2015 in the province of Guangxi in the south country. That same report says that those found guilty of eating pangolins can face 10 years in prison.

The pictures apparently first surfaced on Chinese social media website Weibo. A user, named Ah_cal, according to the BBC, wrote, Cooked pangolin was served to us to eat. It was my first time eating it, the taste was very good, and I have already deeply fallen in love with this taste of wildlife! The party was linked to the Guangxi Investment Promotion Bureau. The Weibo user has been identified as a businessman from Hong Kong.

In ancient Chinese medicine, the scales of the pangolin is used to aid lactation, the draining of pus as well as treating palsy symptoms.

4. While in Thailand, a Record Haul of Pangolins Was Intercepted by the Coast Guard

A Vietnamese Pangolin pictured in October 2016. (Getty)

On February 2, Reuters reported that the Thai Coast Guard intercepted a haul of 3 tons of pangolin scales. The agency said that authorities believed the scales originated in the Congo, were shipped into Turkey and then on to Thailand.

Police Major General Worapong Thongpaiboon told the media, This is the biggest lot (of pangolin scales) that we have seized. The scales were presented to members of the press during a briefing.

5. The Google Doodle Tells the Story of a Pangolin Thats in Love

(Google)

The February 11 Google Doodle takes a unique approach, it shows a love story involving two pangolins. This is, of course, the month of Valentines Day. The parable reads in part:

Dont let its hard outer scales fool you: inside, our friend Pangolin is a big softie, pining over a long-distance romance.

Now, the letter this pangolins been waiting for has arrived! Pangolins sweetheart wants to meet for real, and its ready to roll across the globe to make it happen.

The blog on the doodle makes it clear that this is only part one, so stay tuned for more pangolin updates.

Water continues to spill over Oroville emergency spillway

KCRA Kitchen: Surprise your Valentine with some tasty treats
OROVILLE, Calif. (KCRA)

Water began spilling over the Oroville Dam emergency spillway Saturday morning as Lake Oroville reached full capacity and water outflows by way of the damaged spillway were decreased.

As of noon Saturday, the California Department of Water Resources believes water will continue to spill over the emergency spillway for the next 38 to 56 hours.

This is the first time the uncontrolled emergency spillway has been used in the dam"s 48-year history and can only happen once the lake reaches full capacity at 901 feet elevation. Flows over this secondary chute will likely range between 6,000 and 12,000 cfs, the California Department of Water Resources said.

DWR posted aerials images and video of the emergency spillway.

The flows were seeing are extremely low compared to the design of the structure, DWR Acting Director William Croyle said. Based on our current situation, there is no threat.

DWR is continuously monitoring the damaged spillway to ensure no more erosion occurs. They are letting out 55,000 cfs on the spillway to prevent further erosion to it.

Croyle"s objective is to have a new or repaired spillway in place before the next wet season, hopefully by October.

He added that crews will have to turn off the spillway during the next dry period to fix the eroded spillway. During this process, water may flow over the emergency spillway again, Croyle said. He added that this has to be done to ensure more water can be released from the damaged spillway in the future.

DWR focused their attention Saturday on ways to get the Hyatt Power Plant back in operation. The power generation was halted when the water levels in the channel, which lead from the power plant, became high enough to compromise operation, DWR said.

The department added that the water levels rose when debris from the eroded concrete spillway piled up in the channel below. The same erosion also threatened the towers that hold the power lines that take electricity from the power plant to the electrical grid, DWR said.

"DWR, Pacific Gas & Electric Company and other partners are working to safeguard the hydroelectric facility and power lines," the department said.

Click here to view lake levels, inflows and outflows throughout the day.

Inflow and outflow levels at Lake Oroville, as of 8 a.m. Saturday.

The total flows between the two spillways will not exceed 65,000 cfs over the next 24-48 hours, the County of Sutter Office of Emergency Managament said. The total flow is lower than the amount of water currently in the Feather River.

Although inflows decreased Friday and into Saturday morning to 83,600 cubic feet per second, of 10 a.m., water officials have also decreased outflows from the damaged spillway to 55,000 cfs, according to DWR.

There are no flood concerns or concerns for the structural integrity of the Oroville Dam. The outflows from the lake are expected to remain well within the downstream flood system capacity on the Feather River, according to DWR.

The total flow of water from the reservoir between both the spillways is expected to be much less -- 65,000 cfs -- than what the river can handle over the next 24 to 48 hours and is consistent with releases made at this time of year, the DWR said.

"While DWR does not expect flows to exceed downstream channel carrying capacity, the rate of flow into the ungated emergency spillway may change quickly," the department said in a released statement Saturday morning.

Water officials debated back and forth since discovering the spillway erosion hole Tuesday morning as to whether the lake would reach levels that would allow the emergency spillway to be used.

At noon Friday, DWR officials believed it was less likely that the emergency spillway would be used, based on the amount of water that was being let out in comparison to how much was coming in. But by Friday night, they anticipated it would again be used as officials cut back the outflows through the damaged spillway.

Crews began working Wednesday to clear out trees and vegetation below the uncontrolled spillway to reduce the amount of debris that flows into the Feather River.

Probe launched into latest case of man boasting about "delicious ...

Lions try to chew on an armour-plated Pangolin - India
Authorities are investigating another display online of what is believed to be a dish cooked using endangered pangolins in southern China, according to local media. The State Forestry Administration, which regulates the protection of endangered animals, said they had been informed of the photos posted on Weibo and were investigating the matter in Guangdong, The Beijing News reported. Probe launched over claims endangered pangolin served at banquet to Chinese officials The incident comes after a probe was launched last week following allegations that local government officials had been served pangolin at a banquet also attended by a Hong Kong businessman. In the latest case, the Weibo user shared photos of three "pangolin dishes" in September 2011. His account shows he resides in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. The photos showed what the internet user claimed to be a soup made from eight kinds of animals, including "pangolin, snake and swan", as well as a dish he described as "pangolin-blood fried rice". Another picture, uncaptioned, showed a pot with many slices of cooked meat that resembled the scales on a pangolin. In another post on the same account in March 2012, the Weibo user wrote: "The hospitable chef Liao got people to prepare the mushroom and pangolin soup four hours in advance. [It was] very delicious!" Pangolins are being "eaten to extinction": conservationists He later deleted the photos after they drew hundreds of critical comments lambasting him for consuming the endangered animal.

Verizon Offers Guide to Help Retailers Respond to Cyber Attacks

How Verizon Wireless is Ripping You Off | November 2016

Data breaches are hitting every level of companies today, and retailers must be prepared to respond to an attack.

Those are among the conclusions of the just-released second edition of the Verizon Data Breach Digest, which reveals the impact of data breaches on compromised companies while also offering various scenarios to help retailers reduce risk and properly respond.

Authors of the report noted that data breaches are becoming more complex and are no longer confined to just the IT department but are now affecting every department within an organization. Each breach leaves a lingering, if not lasting imprint on an enterprise.

John Grim, senior manager of investigative response at verizon and one of the authors of the 100-page report, told WWD that his team of investigators analyzed global data attacks to come up with 16 various breach scenarios that include industry type, stakeholder involvement and incident patterns. Over 500 incidents were reviewed that occurred in 40 countries. Its based on our experiences with prior breaches, and we wanted to take what we learned from our investigations to inform the digest, he noted.

In the retail sector, about90 percent of security incidents involve denial of service, point of sale or an app attack. Sixty-four percent of incidents at retail are point of sales types.Attackers were often able to compromise systemsin hours or less, noted researchers in a prior Verizon report. But in 79 percent of cases, it took retail organizationsweeks or more to discover a breach had occurred.

Grim also noted the prevalence of people in regard to attacks. Humans continue to play a significant role in data breaches and cyber security incidents, fulfilling the roles of threat actors, targeted victims and incident response stakeholders, the report said, while Grim addedattacks at retail can involve the entire c-suite as well as the human resources department.

Bryan Sartin, executive director of Verizons Research, Investigations, Solutions and Knowledge Team, described data breaches as growing in complexity and sophistication.

In working with victim organizations, we find that breaches touch every part of an organization up to and including its board of directors, Sartin said. Companies need to be prepared to handle data breaches before they actually happen in order to recover as quickly as possible. Otherwise, breaches can lead to enterprise-wide damage that can have devastating and long-lasting consequences such as a loss of customer confidence or a drop in stock price.

Sartin said the digest can help businesses and government organizations understand how to identify signs of a data breach, important sources of evidence and ways to quickly investigate, contain and recover from a breach.

For each scenario, you go through a detailed analysis of how the attack occurred, level of sophistication, threat actors involved, tactics and techniques used and recommended countermeasures, the authors of the report noted. Some examples of the various scenarios and related attacks include the Absolute Zero attack spurred by a disgruntled employee and the Indignant Mole attack, which was a business partner misuse case.

Those two types of attacks were classified as human element ones. Other classifications include conduit devices, exploitation of software and malicious software. With the latter, attacks cited included the Fetid Cheez breach and the Polar Vortex attack.

Regarding response tactics after an attack, Verizons RISK team suggested that companies preserve evidence, [and] consider consequences of every action taken; be flexible, [and] adapt to evolving situations; establish consistent methods for communication; know your limitations, [and] collaborate with other key stakeholders; document actions and findings, [and] be prepared to explain them.
