Trump says he"ll issue new immigration ban next week

Feds carry out immigration raid in six states, detaining hundreds

President Trump said he will issue a new executive order next week to revive his temporary shutdown of the U.S. refugee program and ban against admitting immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries. The Jan. 27 order hasbeen blocked by federal judges.

During hispress conferenceThursday, Trump said he disagreed with rulings from two courts that have kept his order from being enforced since Feb. 3. But rather than continuing that legal fight, Trump said he will issue a new order that would survive legal scrutiny.

The new order is going to be very much tailored to what I consider to be a very bad (judicial) decision, Trump said.

The Department of Justice confirmed that strategy in a briefit filed Thursday, saying it would not seek another appeal from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals due to the presidents upcoming order.

Trumps executive ordertemporarily barred citizens of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 90 days, all refugees for 120 days, and Syrian citizens indefinitely. The order caused widespread chaos as people from those countries were detained at U.S. airports or prevented from boarding U.S.-bound flights around the world.

In the days that followed, federal judges from Massachusetts to New York to Hawaii issued emergency stays prohibiting the Department of Homeland Security from implementing the order in their states. Then, on Feb. 3, District Judge James Robart in Seattle issued a nationwide temporary restraining order, arguing that Trumps ban likely violated the due process rights of citizens from the seven countries who had become legal permanent residents of the U.S. or had entered the country on valid visas.

Trump bashed that ruling, calling Robart a so-called judge.

The next stop was the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, where a three-judge panel issued a unanimous ruling on Feb. 9 upholding Robarts order. Trump also lashed out at those judges two appointed by Democratic presidents, one by a Republican accusing them of being politically motivated.

Trump saidthe temporary ban is necessary to give his intelligence agencies time to improve the screening process for foreigners trying to enter the country from terror-prone countries. He wants to institute extreme vetting procedures and saidfederal law gives him the power to suspend immigration from specificcountries because its in the national security interests of the U.S.

Attorneys representing Washington state and Minnesota, which filed the lawsuit against Trumps ban, conceded that presidents have broad powers to enforce immigration, but argued that Trump overstepped his authority. They saidTrumps order unfairly targeted people based ontheir religion as a result of his repeated promises to institute a Muslim ban. And they saidforeigners legally allowed to be in the U.S. were not given an opportunityto challenge their rightto enter the country.

One possible solution for Trump is to reissue a new order that only bars travel for people from those seven countries who have never entered the U.S. previously.

Federal immigration raids net many without criminal records, sowing fear

Outside the church in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, Va., U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were waiting.

As the two men and others crossed the street toward a shopping center on Feb. 8, about a dozen ICE agents ordered them up against the wall of a grocery store, questioning them about their immigration status. According to Ramirez and Brewster, the ICE agents then indiscriminately arrested seven of the homeless men all of them Hispanic and packed them into a van full of other detainees.

ICE tells it differently: An ICE official said officers approached the group, questioned them about a potential target and arrested two men, including a legal permanent resident of the United States. Both had been identified in the shopping center parking lot as criminal aliens amenable to removable meaning deportation.

The U.S. government said the series of ICE raids last week netted at least 683 criminal aliens, the first major immigration enforcement wave under President Trump. But a growing chorus of activists, lawyers and lawmakers have pointed to a sharp discrepancy between what ICE says it is doing and what immigrant families are seeing and reporting in cities across the nation.

In Chicago, a student called her high school teacher to tell him that ICE had raided her home the night before, arresting her father, an undocumented immigrant whose criminal record included only traffic violations, the teacher said. In Centreville, Va., a woman told officials at London Towne Elementary School that a students father had been arrested after dropping their son off at school that morning. And in the Baltimore parking lot of a Walgreens, ICE agents arrested a barber and a local business owner who advocates said also had no criminal records.

The reports of seemingly random arrests, of ICE agents appearing during the day outside schools, shelters and apartment blocks, have sent a palpable wave of fear through the nations immigrant communities.

I have never seen the immigrant community, both the lawfully and unlawfully present, with a greater amount of fear than I have in recent weeks, said Faye Kolly, an attorney in Austin.

On Thursday, the agencys top officials traveled to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress, some of whom had requested a briefing on the immigration enforcement actions. According to lawmakers present, ICE officials acknowledged that at least 186 of those apprehended in recent days had no criminal history.

It was hard to not leave that meeting and believe that the Trump administration is going to target as many immigrants as possible, said Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.), who attended the meeting. The only hesitation they seem to have was whether they would go after DACA recipients, Castro said, referring to the thousands of young people who came to the United States as minors and were granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals under the Obama administration so they could pursue education and work opportunities.

ICE has arrested at least one DACA recipient during the raids. ICE says the man, Daniel Ramirez Medina, is a gang member.

Virginia State Sen. Scott A. Surovell (D-Fairfax) accused ICE of engaging in Gestapo-style tactics that amount to racial profiling. Some immigrants have been locking themselves in their homes, wary of opening their doors for any visitors; others have kept their children out of school or stopped showing up at work. Supporters protested Thursday, some skipping work, to show the impact of what the nation would be like without immigrants.

ICE has repeatedly emphasized that agents are targeting dangerous criminals who are living in the United States illegally, as the agency did under President Barack Obama. But the agency has declined to identify any of the people who were arrested and has provided fewer than 20 examples of those swept up in the raids who had been charged with or previously convicted of violent or sexual crimes. ICE officials also declined to say how many people the agency arrested in Virginia and Maryland during operations last week and why ICE failed to mention those operations in its earlier acknowledgment of the operations nationwide.

ICE has denied that its officers have engaged in any sweeps or checkpoints, widespread allegations that have frightened immigrant communities from Raleigh, N.C., to Los Angeles. Reports of ICE checkpoints and sweeps or roundups are false, dangerous and irresponsible, ICE tweeted.

In Austin, where immigration officials detained more than 50 people, news of raids quickly spread through immigrant neighborhoods after a bystander captured cellphone video of one of the first detentions and shared it on social media.

Carlos Gonzlez Gutirrez, Austins consul general of Mexico, visits ICE detention centers each day to provide legal support and interview Mexican nationals held in detention. On a typical day, he said, he talks to between one and three immigrants who have been detained. When he arrived last Thursday, he found 14 Mexican nationals in custody. On Friday, there were 30.

There are cases of mistaken identity, cases of people who were passengers in cars that were pulled over, cases of people who are married to U.S. citizens and who have children who are born and live in this country, said Gutirrez, who has spoken with many of those detained in Austin. It is pretty devastating what happens to the families that were caught in these nets. The destruction that comes after one of these operations is astounding.

A government social worker for Durham County, N.C., said that the number of Hispanic residents seeking assistance had dropped off rapidly in recent days amid swirling rumors about an ICE checkpoint at a Durham intersection and ICE agents making arrests in a supermarket parking lot.

Today, I havent gotten one Hispanic client in the entire check-in today, said the social worker, a longtime government employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. That never happens They think that when they come here for assistance, that theyre going to be on some sort of invisible list.

Rumors of raids and checkpoints which ICE officials have denied have residents of Virginias immigrant-rich Culmore neighborhood on edge. The cluster of apartment buildings off Route 7 in Northern Virginia house hundreds of immigrants, many of whom do not have legal status.

Rumors have gripped the imagination of neighbors here, forcing families indoors and being vigilant of any law enforcement patrolling their streets. Doors typically open to neighbors and passersby drawn by the smell of pupusas or rice are now closed and locked. Knocks at the front door trigger terror, and occupants are asking visitors to identify themselves first before opening the door.

One resident, Ulises Martinez, said neighbors are furiously exchanging text messages about officers with dogs stopping people on street corners, but none of those reports has been confirmed. When his neighbor, a teenager, came by and knocked, Martinez asked who it was. The cheeky teen responded saying Me in Spanish and half-joking.

But Martinez was serious.

Who is me?, he said, peering hard through the dirty peephole.

A Cure for Wellness review: a smart thriller made for dumb people

Warning: mild spoilers follow.

Theres a moment pretty early in Gore Verbinskis A Cure for Wellness when it seems the movie will end with some sort of twist. Id normally refrain from giving out that kind of information in a review, but the film itself doesnt seem concerned with hiding the idea. In fact, it does the opposite: minutes after encouraging the audiences suspicions by laying out a conveniently unexplained mystery, Jason Isaacs playing the enigmatic head of a mysterious sanitarium in the Swiss Alps practically quivers while fawning over an antique locket that belonged to one of the propertys original owners. Its the movie equivalent of those light-up wands used to direct landing airplanes: Hey, pay attention to this detail! Its going to pay off later, youll see!

Its frustrating, because A Cure for Wellness is a beautifully shot film full of interesting ideas, but it dumbs itself down at every possible turn. A psychological thriller about an up-and-coming Wall Street executive (Dane DeHaan) who questions his sanity while trapped in that mysterious sanitarium, A Cure for Wellness is fascinated by the destructive nature of the American work ethic, and how its idolatry has left us susceptible to gaslighting and far, far worse. But while Verbinski (director of The Ring, The Lone Ranger, and the first three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies) expertly crafts an atmosphere of ever-deepening paranoia, the film isnt able to hold on to its larger aspirations. He seems so concerned that the audience wont connect the dots that he collapses the film into a wreckage of blockbuster conventions that likely wont satisfy anyone.

DeHaan plays Lockhart, a workaholic Wall Streeter (are there any other kind in movies?) whose bosses catch him pulling some ethical sleight-of-hand. The end of his career is all but assured unless hes willing to head to a remote wellness spa in Switzerland and retrieve the companys CEO, who appears to have lost his mind and refuses to leave. Lockhart gladly takes the assignment and travels to the mysterious center, which is supposedly built upon a natural aquifer which gives its water healing properties.

Even the most banal moments become opportunities for artistry

The local townsfolk dont regard the looming, castle-like facility too favorably, and Lockhart doesnt bother hiding his disdain when he meets the gentleman that runs the place, Dr. Heinrich Volmer (Isaacs, dripping with menace). The sanitarium has a reputation for attracting the elite from around the world, who hope to take advantage of its purifying treatments to wash away the stress of their professional lives. the strange thing is, nobody ever seems to leave, as evidenced by the smiling, far-too-happy Stepford patients Lockhart encounters. Sure enough, Lockhart is soon involved in a car accident, and wakes up with a broken leg as a patient of the facility. He begins to suspect there may be something sinister going on with Volmers spa, perhaps tied to a strange young girl named Hannah (Mia Goth) who walks the grounds, but as he gives in and begins partaking of the doctors strange treatments, the line between reality and dream begin to blur.

Lately, Ive been trying to stay away from describing movies as lush or painterly, but if any film ever stood up, climbed onto a table, and demanded that vocabulary, it would be A Cure for Wellness. Working with his longtime cinematographer Bojan Bazelli, Verbinski has conjured up a film where almost every frame could end up on One Perfect Shot to be studied and scrutinized. A train barreling toward a mountain tunnel, its windows a perfect symmetrical reflection; Lockhart and Hannah talking beside a mirror-like fountain pool; a slow dolly toward a seemingly empty therapy tub; even the most banal moments become opportunities for artistry. Production designer Eve Stewart further improves it with her detailed work, which gives the film a World War II-meets-steampunk vibe full of old-school medical equipment and vast sensory-deprivation chambers.

The hyper-stylization can become distracting at times, a problem exacerbated by the films deliberate pacing. Verbinski is interested in slow, creeping dread, and he doles out information and evocative imagery one morsel at a time. Its effective at first, but unease soon gives way to frustration because Lockhart and the rest of the characters seem so far behind what the audience already understands. Its not just telegraphed moments like Isaacs and the locket, either. Early on, Lockhart notices what appears to be a strange microbe in the water at the facility something he doesnt think about or follow up on, even though its obviously a vital clue to the heart of the films mysteries. Theres a gag with a malfunctioning toilet thats obviously coming the moment Lockhart steps into the restroom which would be fine, if it wasnt set up two additional times before the eventual payoff. Its as if the filmmakers arent sure the audience will understand what theyre doing, so they belabor every clue or setup multiple times to make sure the point is coming across.

It Starts to feel like a horror movie full of impossibly stupid characters

Granted, there is an alternate way to see this particular storytelling tic. The generous read is that A Cure for Wellness is very much interested in delusion, and the lies we tell ourselves to justify our obsessions professional ones, romantic ones, or those in between. Its a movie full of reflections and mirrors, of alternate states of being, and in that sense, one take is that Verbinski and screenwriter Justin Haythe are just making a point about how far down the rabbit hole of denial Lockharts own obsessions has taken him.

But thats a subtle point for a movie that seems to think its audience is so dumb. Instead, Wellness starts to feel like a horror movie full of characters so impossibly stupid, that their behavior invites viewers to throw something at the (insanely beautiful) imagery on-screen.

Most infuriating of all is that despite all of that, A Cure for Wellness does manage to actually stick its landing. It concludes on a thought-provoking turn that feels both thematically and narratively satisfying. But then, two hours into its running time, the movie goes on for another 20 minutes, with an additional act that doesnt just seem tacked on it feels like its part of a different film altogether.

The last 20 minutes feel pulled from a different movie altogether

Thats where Verbinskis blockbuster sensibilities break through, where the filmmaker who made The Ring transforms into the one who made The Lone Ranger in the span of two or three shots. The final act almost plays as parody, complete with a climactic showdown and massive sets burning to the ground. But the final insult is that Verbinski thinks he can get away with the switcheroo by falling back on the blurred line between fantasy and reality in A Cure for Wellness final moments. It not only undercuts the film, it suggests the filmmakers fundamentally misunderstand the tropes theyre working with. The endings of films like Inception work because the audience has been on the same emotional journey as the protagonists, and wondering whats real and whats not puts the viewer in the same existential dilemma as the character. But in Wellness, the audience is almost always ahead of Lockhart, and the ending feels like a bizarre last-minute cop-out.

The irony is that A Cure for Wellness is so frustrating because it gets so many other things right. Its a breathtaking experience aesthetically, and theres no better time for a movie that questions the human costs of an obsession with capitalism and personal success. (Right now its tempting to view all movies through the lens of political discourse, but theres no mistaking the issues Verbinski and Haythe are interested in.) But by underestimating its audience, the movie loses what magic it does have, becoming a shiny bauble whose noble intent is left utterly inert.

Immigration News: Undocumented Immigrants Killed Dozens Of Americans, But The Government Can"t Deport Them

Dozens of immigrants have murdered people after the government decided not to deport them, according to aSenate Judiciary Committee document. In all, 121 convicts were charged with homicide after they were released by immigration officials from 2010 through 2014, El Nuevo Herald exclusively reported Wednesday.

The vast majority of immigrants are not found guilty of murder. For example, there were 2,457 immigrants released by the U.S. Department of Homeland SecurityImmigrationand Customs Enforcement in 2014.But federal immigration officials have been criticized widely in recent years for releasing foreigners convicted of crimes.

The murder rate is particularly troubling given a recent focus on criminal immigrants.President Donald Trump has vowed to deport anyimmigrants who carry out crimes, a stance that could affect 8 million people now living in the U.S.

This disturbing fact follows ICEs admission that, of the 36,007 criminal aliens it released from ICE custody in Fiscal Year 2013, 1,000 have been re-convicted of additional crimes in the short time since their release, the Senate Judiciary Committee document from June 12, 2015 read.

Sometimes immigrants cannot be deported because their native country refusesto take them. The bulk ofimmigrant convicts in 2014, or roughly 1,183 people, came from Cuba, but others were from Afghanistan, Algeria, China, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia and Zimbabwe. In other cases, immigrants were released after the Supreme Court ruling 15 years ago that determined the government cannot hold peopleindefinitely.

There are at least 23 countries that refuse to take their people back after theyve been ordered to leave the United States, Trump said on the campaign trail in August. Including large numbers of violent criminals. They wont take them back. So we say, Okay, well keep them. Not going to happen with me, not going to happen with me.

Trump cited the deathofSarah Root, 21, of Des Moines, Iowa,in January 2016. She was killed by an undocumented immigrant who had failed to attendcourt hearings for prior alleged crimes. In fact, Trump hasmade the topic of criminal immigrants a frequent talking point.

"Thousands of Americans have been killed by illegal immigrants," TrumpsaidOct. 27 in Springfield, Ohio.

But proponents of immigration reform argue itis unfair to blame all immigrants for the acts of a few bad people.

For more than a century, innumerable studies have confirmed two simple yet powerful truths about the relationship between immigration and crime, a recent report from theAmerican Immigration Council concluded. Immigrants are less likely to commit serious crimes or be behind bars than the native-born, and high rates of immigration are associated with lower rates of violent crime and property crime. This holds true for both legal immigrants and the unauthorized, regardless of their country of origin or level of education.

Sergeant Major Bob McDonald often sings the national anthem before Capitals home games, but last week, he sang for a smaller audience. After singing the national anthem at the Verizon Center on Saturday night, McDonald went to see Tracey Madigan, who was hosting a house party because she had recently become a U.S. Citizen. McDonald surprised her and her guests by singing the anthem inside her home. When he showed up, youd think Elvis had arrived at the door. It was OH MY G*d I CANT BELIEVE HES HERE. Columbus Blue Jackets forward David Clarkson has been unable to play hockey in almost a full year because of a serious back injury. Some days, even simple tasks like getting out of bed prove to be difficult.I left home at 15 to play juniors, and hockeys all Ive ever known. Its hard to go through, but Ill look at a picture of my kids, or think about them, and it brings me back to earth. I have a lot to be happy about, but this sucks.
