Weak tornado in Wentzville injures 2 people, damages mobile homes, businesses

TOP 10 BEST TORNADOES

Updates with governor declaring state of emergency for Missouri areas affected by Monday night storms.

WENTZVILLE The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that it was a weak tornado not straight line winds that hit Wentzville about midnight Monday, injuring two people and damaging homes and businesses.

A tornado also hit Oak Grove, Mo., near Kansas City, where nearly 500 homes and commercial buildings were damaged. Gov. Eric Greitens toured the area Tuesday and declared a state of emergency.

Police thought the damage resulted from straight line winds from Hepperman Road to Continental Drive and East Pearce Boulevard. However, the National Weather Service determined in a preliminary report that it was an EF1 tornado, packing winds up to 88 mph.

The St. Charles County Division of Emergency Management, which is responsible for sounding the outdoor warning sirens, didn"t sound them, for several reasons.

The agency"s operations coordinator, Ina Obenland, said the National Weather Service had not issued a tornado warning and there were no radar indications of a tornado and no sightings of a tornado on the ground by trained spotters, first responders or others.

"We had no indication a tornado was on the ground," Obenland said.

The tornado touched down about 11:51 p.m. Monday and ended about three minutes later, the Weather Service says. As the storm moved east, St. Peters reported some trees down and tree limbs in the road, as well as siding damage at an apartment complex. Farther east, in St. Charles, there was a minimal number of power outages.

The short duration of the tornado, the fact that it was wrapped in rain and the dark may have contributed to the difficulty in spotting it, Obenland said.

The area had been under a tornado watch for much of the night, but never a tornado warning, Obenland said. She said this illustrates why residents should always be aware that a severe thunderstorm can produce a tornado at any time. Rapid onset of a tornado, she said, is one of the characteristics of a severe thunderstorm.

At Wentzville Mobile Manor, a mobile home park off of West Main Street, Sandra Orr and her husband Mike Orr were taken to a hospital after being injured when their mobile home overturned. Police said the injuries were minor.

"It was really loud," Sandra Orr said. "Next thing we knew all h**l broke loose."

The storm also caused a gas leak that led to the evacuation of residents in the mobile home park.

A fifth wheel vehicle turned over at a camper company and several buildings sustained structural damage on Swantnerville Road and at Wentzville Millworks. A tractor-trailer overturned at the Super 8 Motel, and several buildings had roof damage near Continental Drive and East Pitman. In addition, there was minor damage to commercial buildings at West Pearce and Choctaw Drive.

An EF-1 on a scale of tornado strength has winds of 86 mph to 110 mph. By comparison, the tornado in Perryville, Mo., that killed one motorist Feb. 28 and damaged dozens of homes was classified as an EF-4, with winds reaching 180 mph.

The storms that rolled through the St. Louis region on Monday night and early Tuesday also downed trees and power lines in Jefferson County and produced large hail in Macoupin County, according to the National Weather Service.

On the western side of Missouri, at least two tornadoes touched down Monday. Storm Prediction Center meteorologist Ryan Jewell says the first tornado was reported about 7:20 p.m. Monday near Platte City, about 20 miles north of Kansas City. Jewell says radar indications showed the twister continued northeast into Clinton County, toward the town of Lathrop, before it began to dissipate.

A short time later, another tornado touched down east of Kansas City in Jackson County, just south of Interstate 70. Jewell says the tornado hit near Grain Valley and moved east toward Oak Grove. Other severe damage was reported in Smithville, north of Kansas City.

On Tuesday morning, Ameren reported nearly 9,000 electric customers without power across Missouri, including central Missouri, northeast Missouri and and Jefferson County.

About 9,200 were without power throughout Illinois. About half of those were in the Metro East.

The Associated Press and Robert Cohen of the Post-Dispatch contributed to this report.

Snap stock tumbles for a second day, eating into IPO boost

Snap Stock Soars in Market Debut

Snap Inc"s shares tumbled 12 per cent on Tuesday and traders raced to position themselves to cash in on further declines after analysts gave the company a lukewarm reception following its red-hot market debut.

Snap"s US$3.4 billion public listing on Thursday was the hottest technology offering in three years, but its lofty valuation and slowing user growth have raised eyebrows on Wall Street and attracted traders who expect its shares to fall.

Opening up the potential for more volatility, the company"s underwriters have exercised an over-allotment option to buy an additional 30 million shares, bringing the total IPO to 230 million shares, according to two capital markets sources familiar with the deal.

That means Snap"s bankers would no longer be in a position to stabilize its shares by buying them should they fall below their $17 IPO price.

Institutional traders were paying annualized interest rates between 15 per cent and 40 per cent to be among the first to short-sell the stock, according to S3 Partners, a financial analytics firm.

The owner of messaging app Snapchat is not profitable and has warned it may never be.

Much of last week"s frenetic trading in Snap has yet to settle, making it difficult for brokers to estimate how many shares are available to lend to short sellers. But early data suggests brokers are facing a "chaotic" lending environment, with early short interest approaching US$300 million, said S3 Partners Managing Director of Research Ihor Dusaniwsky.

"This is the first couple of days of shorting data to show up, so I"m sure this is going to get bigger quickly," Dusaniwsky said.

Short-sellers borrow and then sell stocks they think will fall in value, hoping to profit by buying the stock back more cheaply later on and then returning it to its owner.

The interest rates brokers charged for Snap shares on Tuesday suggest demand is extremely high and that those borrowing the stock expect its price to fall steeply.

By comparison, brokers lend out shares of Facebook Inc at an annualized rate of less than 1 percent, reflecting an ample supply available for lending and low demand from short sellers, according to data from Astec Analytics.

In its market debut Snap surged 44 per cent from its US$17 initial public offering price to close at US$24.48. Since then it has fallen 22 per cent.

On tuesday afternoon, snap was down 12.7 per cent at US$20.76.

Snap has been heavily traded since its market debut, rolling over the number of shares sold in the IPO more than twice.

Options trading in Snap is expected to start on Friday, once regulatory requirements are met.

At about US$27 billion, Snap"s market capitalization remains a little larger than Kellogg Co and slightly smaller than HP Inc.

So far, no analysts have initiated the stock with a "buy" rating.

Of six analysts who have launched coverage of Snap, four recommend selling and two have neutral ratings, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Globally, shares of most of the 25 largest tech IPOs have languished in their first year on the public market, with 16 notching a hefty decline from their debut day closing price, according to a Reuters analysis of market performance.

Ben Carson referred to slaves as immigrants and people are outraged

CNN"s Angela Rye Reminds Ben Carson That "We Built This Joint for Free"

Ben Carson, dubbed "Low Energy" by now-President Donald J Trump in 2015, is the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

He gave a speech on Monday, somewhat of a debut in the role, in which he told agency employees to be can-do and to exercise as much of their brain as possible.

No, seriously.

He said:

You can"t overload [the brain]. Have you ever heard people say:"Don"t do that or you"ll overload your brain?"

You can"t overload the human brain. If you learned one new fact every second it would take you more than three million years to challenge the capacity of your brain. It can"t be done.

So, we need to concentrate a little less on what we can"t do and a little more on what we can do. After all this is America, this used to be known as the "can-do society", not the "what can you do for me society", but the "can-do society".

That"s what America is about.

A land of dreams and opportunity.

So far, so good. The brain tangent was a little weird, but he"s a neurosurgeon so we"ll get over it.

What he said next, however, has left people outraged.

There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.

But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.

People have reacted angrily to the implication that slaves were remunerated in pay comparable to working conditions in the present, rather than victims of colonialist oppression, and that they were in some way pursuing prosperity, rather than being subjected to tyrannical conditions.

Also, immigrants are people who voluntarily move to a different country.

There was nothing voluntary about the forced trafficking of the slave trade.

carson also, during his speech, said of the 18th century United States of America...

People could do whatever they wanted as long as what you wanted to do didnt interfere with me and what I wanted to do.

... Apparently ignoring the experience of black people and Native Americans at this time in history.

Carson later clarified his comments in a statement:

Im proud of the courage and perseverance of Black Americans and their incomprehensible struggle from slavery to freedom. Im proud that our ancestors overcame the evil and repression that we know as slavery.

The slave narrative and immigrant narrative are two entirely different experiences. Slaves were ripped from their families and their homes and forced against their will after being sold into slavery by slave traders.

The Immigrants made the choice to come to America. They saw this country as a land of opportunity. In contrast, slaves were forced here against their will and lost all their opportunities. We continue to live with that legacy.

The two experiences should never be intertwined, nor forgotten, as we demand the necessary progress towards an America that"s inclusive and provides access to equal opportunity for all.

We should revel in the fact that although we got here through different routes, we have many things in common now that should unite us in our mission to have a land where there is liberty and justice for all.

Rockville considers pro-immigrant ordinance

Immigrant Latina Tells Truth About Trump To ALL Latinos

WASHINGTON For a long time, Rockville police have had an informal policy to not ask anyone about their immigration status, or for help with immigration enforcement.

But in the wake of major immigration policy changes by the Trump administration, the city is considering an ordinance, introduced by Councilmember Julie Palakovich Carr, that would make its policies official.

Seventy-five people signed up to speak on the topic Monday night during a public hearing at City Hall.

Its a common sense effort to foster trust between the community and the police department that will make the community more safe, said Ben Shnider, who launched a petition on Change.org to Make Rockville, MD a Sanctuary City.As of Monday night, the petition had 1,120 supporters.

Another Change.org petition, Say NO to Rockville Becoming A Sanctuary City, had 545 supporters as of Monday night.

Former Councilmember Tom Moore said now is the time for the city to formalize its policies.

A law that tells the terrified children in Rockville that this city will play no part in deporting their parents, no part in destroying their families, he said.

Resident Nancy Shih said that the ordinance would make Rockville less safe.

Horrible MS-13 gang crimes are everywhere nowadays. Do you read the newspaper? she asked.

It gives undocumented immigrants a false sense of security, said Zhenya Li, a chinese immigrant who is a U.S. citizen.

Assistant Montgomery County Police Chief Russ Hamill attended the hearing at the request of Police Chief Tom Manger to talk about what the changes on the federal level mean for his department and Rockville police.

The current presidential administrations orders and directions have little bearing on the day to day operations of local law enforcement agencies, including here locally, including our departments. The president does not direct the actions of local police organizations, and these measures do not influence our operations. Nothing has changed over the past two months, Hamill said.

We conduct our local law enforcement duties the same as we have done since the day I came here over 33 years ago. We do it fairly, impartially, and with a goal to serve everyone equally without regard to race, creed, color, nationality, or any other status somebody could think of, he added.
