"GGG" wins narrow decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify middleweight titles

Gennady GGG Golovkin vs Jacobs Full fight | HDTV 18/03/2017

GennadyGolovkin entered Saturday night"s contest against Daniel Jacobs undefeated in 36 fights, with 23 consecutive knockouts. After 12 rounds at New York"s Madison Square Garden, the KO streak was over and there was doubt for the first time in his career if Golovkin would still be undefeated.

The unbeaten streak remained intact; Golovkin earned a unanimous decision (115-112, 114-113, 114-113) to become the unified middleweight champion. Sporting News scored the fight 115-112 for Jacobs.

"I needed this," Golovkin told HBO"s Max Kellerman in his postfight interview."This was my first test over 12 rounds. I need quality fights."

Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) struggled through the first two rounds. He looked tentative and Jacobs was outclassing him with his speed and better boxing skills.

"GGG" turned it around in the third round, knocking down Jacobs with a double straight right hand.

The fight then went back and forth, with Jacobs coming on in the later rounds and appearing to take control of the fight.

Based on two of the judges" scorecards and what was said on the HBO PPV broadcast, the fight came down to the final round. Jacobs (33-2, 23 KOs), feeling as though he had the fight in the bag, kept holding Golovkin while the champion fought with more urgency as he sensed his undefeated streak was in danger.

Jacobs felt he did enough to unseat Golovkin. His interview with Kellerman was sour grapes. He believed the judges wanted Golovkin to win because of his stature of one of the bigger names in the sport. The judging in New York is shaky in general, but judges don"t score someone to win because of who they are.

"I thought I won the fight by at least two rounds,"Jacobs told Kellerman. "But this is boxing. Obviously he"s a bigger draw than me."

Golovkin told Kellerman the plan going foward is to still pursue a fight with Canelo Alvarez in September, pending Alvarez beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in May.

"Of course I"m ready," Golovkin said."I"m hungry. I want this fight."

Sources have told Sporting News that Golovkin plans on fighting in his home country ofKazakhstan in June and wants to fight WBO middleweight champ Billy Joe Saunders.

Here wasour live coverage of "GGG" vs. Jacobs:

12:54 a.m.: Round 12 to Golovkin (10-9, 115-112 Jacobs). Golovkin showed the heart of a champion. Jacobs seemed to feel he had the fight in the bag and kept holding Golovkin. Golovkin felt a sense of urgency and wanted to make a closing statement. Off to the judges, and we know how New York appoints judges.

12:49: Round 11 to Jacobs (10-9, 106-102 Jacobs). Jacobs is dominating Golovkin. He"s the fresher fighter and the more complete boxer. Golovkin needs a stoppage on our card.

12:45: Round 10 to Jacobs (10-9, 96-93 Jacobs). Jacobs continues to outbox Golovkin, who has no offense. Golovkin is headhunting while Jacobs is composed and doing what got him to this fight.

12:41: Round 9 to Golovkin (10-9, 86-84 Jacobs). Jacobs was winning the round until a short uppercut rocked Jacobs, which gave Golovkin confidence. He backed Jacobs up with a jab and landed at will. Golovkin got himself back into the fight.

12:37: Round 8 to Jacobs (10-9, 77-74 Jacobs). Jacobs is outboxing Golovkin: jab, then body shots to the body. Golovkin needs to increase the pressure and do it now.

12:33: Round 7 to Jacobs (10-9, 67-65 Jacobs). Jacobs keeps outboxing Golovkin, connecting on combinations and hurting Golovkin. "GGG" needs to open up more; Jacobs is being the aggressor and controlling the fight.

12:29: Round 6 to Jacobs (10-9, 57-56 Jacobs). That was Jacobs" best round since the second. He went back to boxing Golovkin, which is the most effective thing he can do. Golovkin is having to think more, which helped Jacobs connect with a right hand.

12:25: Round 5 to Golovkin (10-9, 47-47). Golovkin is landing the jab harder and harder. A straight right hand that sent Jacobs back was the hardest punch of the round. Jacobs needs to go back to the jab. He"s starting to fight Golovkin"s fight.

12:21: Round 4 to Golovkin (10-8, 38-37 Jacobs). Two right hands, the latter knockingJacobs down, got him back into the fight. Like how Golovkin kept his composure and didn"t rush in. He peppered Jacobs with the jab and started to find a home with the uppercut. A key round coming up for Jacobs.

12:17: Round 3 to Jacobs (10-9, 30-27 Jacobs). Jacobs started to let loose, peppering the jab and connecting on a left hook that stunned Golovkin. Golovkin needs to pick it up quickly; he needs to start winning rounds and let it go a little more.

12:14: Round 2 to Jacobs (10-9, 20-18 Jacobs). Jacobs continued to do what he did in the first round. Right now he"s neutralizing Golovkin, who for some reason is reluctant to throw.

12:10: Round 1 to Jacobs (10-9). That was a feeling-out round. Jacobs threw more jabs to keep Golovkin at bay. Golovkin appears to be reluctant starting out.

11:51: Coming up next is the main event between Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight title unification bout.

11:43: Sor Rungvisai upsets Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez by majority decision (114-112, 114-112, 113-113) to capture the WBC super flyweight championship. Like we said, many on social media felt the fight was close. Apparently the judges in New York were correct. Hard to see what the judges saw here. Beyond the first round, Gonzalez was the dominant fighter. This happens with the New York State Atheltic Commission. Look at UFC 208, where the judging was all over the place and widely criticzed. Gonzalez landed 441 punches to Sor Rungvisai"s 284. Gonzalez connected on 372 to Sor Rungvisai"s 277. With those wide margins, it is very hard to see how Sor Rungvisai won the fight.

11:40: Round 12 to Gonzalez (10-9, 116-110). I don"t know what Sor Rungvisai was doing in the round. Appearing to need a stoppage, he decided to graband hold until the final moments of the fight. Gonzalez fought like the fight was close and showed the heart of a champion. Many on social media have the fight close. We go to the judges.

11:34: Round 11 to Sor Rungvisai (10-9, 106-101). Sor Rungvisai did what he did in the first round. He put constant pressure on Gonzalez and used his weight and power advantage. Off to the final round.

11:30: Round 10 to Gonzalez (10-9, 97-91), Gonzalez"s accuracy is amazing. He"s connecting on just about everything he"s throwing and blocking most of Sor Rungvisai"s shots.Gonzalez has lost a lot of blood.

11:26: Round 9 to Gonzalez (10-9, 87-82). Gonzalez continues with the constant pressure. He"s more accurate. When Sor Rungvisai lands one punch, Gonzalez connects on three or four punches.

11:21: Round 8 to Gonzalez (10-9, 77-73). A very good round. Gonzalez has a motor unlike any other. Starting to connect on a straight right hand/left hook combination which is starting to wear onSor Rungvisai. The latter needs to do what he did in the first round because Gonzalez has taken over the fight.

11:19: Round 7 to Sor Rungvisai (10-9, 67-64). Sor Rungvisai decided to let it all hang out. He just kept throwing and figured if he got hit, he was going to get hit. He was the more effective striker and was the first guy to be throwing.

11:13: Round 6 to Gonzalez (10-8, 58-54). Constant pressure is the name of the game for Gonzalez. Sor Rungvisai is doing everything he can but Gonzalez is overwhelming him. Sor Rungvisai headbutted Gonzalez again and Sor Rungvisai had a point taken away.

11:07: Round 5 to Gonzalez (10-9, 48-46). More of the same from Gonzalez. Confidence is growing and Sor Rungvisai is starting to lose confidence. Near the end of the round, Gonzalez wobbled Sor Rungvisai with a right hand.

11:02: Round 4 to Gonzalez (10-9, 38-37). Don"t knowhow they are standing there in the middle of the ring. Gonzalez and Sor Rungvisai aregoing toe to toe, throwing everything but the kitchen sink. Gonzalez is starting to take control; he"s throwing more effective and powerful shots.

10:58: Round 3 to Gonzalez (10-9, 28-28). Back-and-forth action throughout the round. Gonzalez needs to continue leading with his left hand because Sor Rungvisai keeps circling to Gonzalez"s left hand. Sor Rungvisai needs to circle away and start pounding Gonzalez with the left hand.

10:54: Round2 toGonzalez (10-9, 19-18). Gonzalez landed the moreeffective power shots. He needs to continue going to the body. It has proved to be his best weapon in the fight.

10:50: Round1 to Sor Rungvisai (10-8). Sor Rungvisaiis no joke. He"s heavy-handed, and he knocked Gonzalez down with a clean body shot. You could tell it hurt Gonzalez, who waited until the count of eight to get up.

10:43: Up next, in the co-main event of "GGG" vs. Jacobs, Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KOs) defends his WBC super flyweight title againstSrisaket Sor Rungvisai (41-4-1, 38 KOs). Beyond the Cuandras fight, Gonzalez has rarely been tested. Sor Rungvisai will test Gonzalez this evening. He"s quick and heavy-handed. Expect a high-action affair.

10:39: HBO"s Max Kellerman interviewed Golovkin and Jacobs. When Golovkin was asked about Jacobs skipping the IBF weight check Saturday morning, he appeared to be annoyed that Jacobs didn"t live up to his end of the bargain. Kellerman asked Jacobs every way possible if he was trying to come in at a heavier weight. Jacobs dodged the questions. It"s quite obvious that was the case, and it is a smart move by Jacobs; get an advantage any way you can.

10:34: Carlos Cuadras defeats David Carmona by unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94). Cuadras made the fight more difficult than it needed to be. The first half was all Cuadras. For one reason or another, he let the foot off the gas and Carmona got back into the fight. A fighter cannot do that in boxing, especially considering how judging in the sport is done. The win sets up a rematch withRoman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez if the latter gets bySrisaket Sor Rungvisai.

9:48: Coming up next at "GGG" vs. Jacobs, a super flyweight bout between Carlos Cuadras (34-1-1, 26 KOs) and David Carmona (20-3-5, eightKOs). Cuadras" lone defeat came to theNo. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez.

9:45: HBO is showing highlights of Jacobs" fight against Peter Quillin from December2015. No, Jim Lampley, that was not Jacobs" last fight; he fought Sergio Mora in September and won by seventh-round TKO.

9:40: Ryan Martin defeats Bryant Cruz by TKO at 45 seconds of the eighth round. It was a solid performance by Martin. He used his left hook very well and continously worked Cruz"s body. It was the first stoppage of Martin"s career that went beyond the fifth round.

9:05: Kicking off the "GGG" vs. Jacobs pay-per-view, a lightweight bout between Bryant Cruz (17-1, eightKOs) and Ryan Martin(17-0, 10 KOs). It"s a pretty good test for Martin, who is a rising prospect in the stacked lightweight division.

I Posed for Maxim and I"m Running for Congress. It Shouldn"t Be That Shocking.

Immigrants Commit Fewer Crimes Than Native Born Citizens

Alejandra Campoverdi for Congress

Id rather buy you a purse.

My blood started to boil right when he said it. I had just asked a male friend of mine if hed contribute to my campaign for Congress in the current special election for Californias 34th District. I had expected to have his support, or at least his encouragement, and I felt my stomach immediately knot from the betrayal.

I, of all people, shouldnt have been that surprised.

Sexism and misogyny are nothing new in politics. Female political staffers and politicians have been facing off-color comments and leering glances and have been excluded from at capacity meetings for decades. In fact, I assumed Id already faced my biggest dose of sexism back in 2009.

I had graduated from Harvards Kennedy School of Government with a masters degree in public policy the year before and moved to Chicago to work unpaid on then-Senator Barack Obamas campaign for president. Never mind that I had just covered my full graduate school tuition with student loans. I was inspired and ecstatic to have the opportunity to work to elect someone whose vision for our country I shared. Living off credit cards was worth it to me, and even though I couldnt afford health insurance, I took the job anyway. Where I come from, safety nets dont exist, so I was used to the free fall.

I just didnt expect for my next free fall to take place because of my underwear and in front of the entire White House.

I was raised by a single mom and by my grandmother, who both immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico. I spent most of my childhood in a tiny, low-income apartment that burst at the seams with members of my extended family. We had a lot of love but not a lot of resources, and we got by on welfare and other programs like WIC and Medicaid at times.

Like many, Ive had to work since my early teens and have had a lot of jobs. As a waitress. As a live mannequin on Venice Beach Boardwalk. As a retail employee at a clothing store. And almost 15 years ago, I worked as a model. My time as a model was short and it helped me pay some bills.

After President Obama was elected, I was appointed to work in the White House, initially in the chief of staffs office and later serving as the first ever White House deputy director of Hispanic media. This moment was the fulfillment of dreams that a younger me could have never conceived, and I felt a deep sense of responsibility to translate that perspective into action at the highest level.

Then the photos hit.

One week into the job, photos from an old shoot for Maxim surfaced and spread like an arsonists fire. Right behind the photos followed the hotter, more humiliating blaze of unveiled snark that pointedly implied that I didnt deserve what Id accomplished and had been overambitious for even trying in the first place. And it was everywhere from Gawker to the Daily Mail to Perez Hilton to the front page of a random newspaper in India. I was now stamped as the White House Maxim Model. I had been reduced to a stereotype.

After crying for a week, I put my head down and worked even harder. The only thing that ever got me anywhere was working hard, showing up when I said I would or earlier, and doing more than just the job I was hired to do. And thats what I did for my next four years at the White House.

Now, eight years later, as I run for Congress, I understand a lot more about the systemic sexism in politics than the young woman who beat herself up and took all the shaming so personally. Yet when I recently found myself forced to answer questions about Maxim by a reputable newspaper in my official announcement for Congress, I knew I had to speak out about this double standard. Enough already.

Men get to be broad and complicated and contradictory. Yet as women, we aren"t granted the whole person. We get typecast as the Sexy One, the Brainy One, the Girl Next Door. We dont create these boxes for ourselves and usually don"t agree to them, so why should we have to live within them? Women shouldnt need to choose between being intelligent and being feminine. Female sexuality and intelligence are not inversely related.

Im proud of the mosaic of experiences that make me who I am. My life experiences have forged me into a fighter and thats why I decided that I wont let others boxes stop me from doing what needs to be done running for office, standing up to Trump and Republicans, and standing up for women in Los Angeles.

But that"s my experience, and I"m fortunate to have come through it. The larger problem is our need for many more women diverse, young, and from a range of perspectives to run for office, now more than ever. Few women are able to navigate their way through college and build a career in a way that is perfectly linear and that all ties together with a pretty bow on top. Most of us figure it out as we go along. In real time.

Right now, there are young women all across the country who are exactly who we need to run for office. They are passionate, they are fighters, and they are real, with backgrounds that arent cookie-cutter. Its urgent we send a message to these women that they will not be kept out of the political process by the mere fact of being human, of being their wonderfully nuanced, complicated, sometimes contradictory selves.

From this generation forward, every woman will have grown up in the digital age where, unless she sat in a turtleneck at home for all her teens, she will have pictures readily available online that can be used to shame her. And if these women decide to sit this one out because of that, we will miss out on talented, transformational women leaders in every public-facing field, especially politics. This will be a loss for our country and our future.

Now more than ever, we must recognize and accept the complexity of real women, and celebrate them in their quest for leadership roles. Whole, multidimensional women. Please throw your name in the arena, whichever one youre in because it only gets better every time one of us tries.

We do not need to be cleared for contention. And we can buy our own d**n purses.

St. Patrick"s Day History: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

The History of St. Patrick"s Day

St. Patricks Day is being celebrated on March 17 in Ireland and around the world.

Google is marking the holiday with a Doodle drawn by Irish artist Chris OHara.

In the spirit of the day, OHara chose to paint the logo green with a little assistance from a friendly shamrock, Google says. We hope it reflects the boundless energy and welcoming spirit of Ireland, as Google sports green for the great ire.

Heres what you need to know about the history of St. Patricks Day:

1. The Holiday Honors St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland

St. Patricks Day honors the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, who lived from about 387 AD to 461 AD, according to Catholic.org.

He was born in Roman-controlled Britain and kidnapped by pirates, who took him to Ireland as a slave and to herd sheep. He eventually escaped, but then had a vision and returned to Ireland, Catholic.org explains:

I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: The Voice of the Irish. As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.

He became a priest and returned to Ireland in 433. His time in Ireland has led to many legends. He was able to convert thousands to Christianity and began to build churches around the country.

The shamrock is associated with St. Patricks Day because he used it to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), according to Catholic.org.

After living and preaching in Ireland for 40 years, he died in 461.

2. St. Patricks Day Was Made an Official Feast Day in the 17th Century

St. Patricks Day mass is celebrated at the Church of St. Patrick March 17, 2004 in Washington, DC. (Getty)

The celebration of the feast day of St. Patrick began in 1631, according to Time.

Marion Casey, an assistant professor of Irish Studies at New York University, told Time that the modern holiday didnt begin until the early 18th century. Time explains:

It wasnt until the early 18th century that many of todays traditions were kicked into high gear. Since the holiday falls during Lent, it provides Christians a day off from the prescriptions of abstinence leading up to Easter, and around the 1720s, the church found it got kind of out of control, Casey says. It was to remind celebrants what the holiday actually stood for that the church first associated a botanical itemcustomary for all saintswith St. Patrick, assigning him the symbol of the likewise lucky shamrock.

Pope Francis recognized St. Patrick on Wednesday.

Tomorrow we will commemorate St. Patrick, the apostle of Ireland, Pope Francis said. His spiritual stamina stirs you, dear young people, to be consistent with your faith; his trust in Christ the Savior sustains you, dear sick and infirm people, in times of great difficulty; and his missionary dedication reminds you, dear newlyweds, of the importance of the Christian education of your children.

3. It Is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics in Ireland & a Celebration Day Countrywide

In the Catholic dioceses of Ireland, the Feast of St. Patrick is a holy day of obligation, meaning Catholics are expected to attend Mass, according to CatholicIreland.net.

It is also a national holiday across Ireland, according to Ireland.com, the countrys tourism website.

In Dublin, the run-up to St Patricks Day is an excuse for a four-day festival embracing everything from salsa dancing to cils (traditional dances); while Derry-Londonderrys Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Language Week) is a lively and linguistic build-up to the big day, with events throughout the city. The oldest St Patricks Day parade in Ireland is in County Wexford. It began in 1917 and is still going strong, the website says.

4. The Holiday Is Also Celebrated With Parades & Other Festivities in the U.S. & Around the World

Its not just in Ireland where the holiday is celebrated. Because of the Irish diaspora, St. Patricks Day has become a day of celebration around the world, including in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Parades are scheduled in many major American cities, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago.

5. St. Patricks Day Has Many Traditions, Including Eating Foods Like Corned Beef & Soda Bread

There are many traditions that come along with St. Patricks Day, beyond just drinking and going to a parade.

Food is a major part of the St. Patricks Day holiday, with corned beef and cabbage and irish soda Bread eaten by many revelers.

Music is also important, according to History.com.

Music is often associated with St. Patricks Dayand Irish culture in general. From ancient days of the Celts, music has always been an important part of Irish life. The Celts had an oral culture, where religion, legend and history were passed from one generation to the next by way of stories and songs, the website explains. After being conquered by the English, and forbidden to speak their own language, the Irish, like other oppressed peoples, turned to music to help them remember important events and hold on to their heritage and history.

SMU Basketball Practice Notebook: 3/16/17

2017 Men"s Basketball Championship Final SMU Post Game Press Conference

PonyStampede has notes and takeaways from SMU"s practice and media session before its NCAA Tournament game against USC.

Shake Milton returns to Tulsa

Shake Milton is a native of Owasso, Oklahoma, which is a short distance from Tulsa. In his first game back in his hometown as a freshman, Milton poured in 24 points and knocked down seven 3s. Hehad another impressive effort in Tulsa this year, hitting five 3s and scoring 19 points. Earlier this year, I asked Milton what it would mean to him to play an NCAA Tournament game in Tulsa.

"It would be huge. As a team it would be a really big boost. It would be cool," he responded with a grin.

Tim Jankovich echoed similar thoughts in today"s press conference.

"He"s excited," Jankovich said. "He always seems to play really well here and I hope that holds."

SMU could look for Milton to get some shots early to get going again in his hometown.

Rematch Against USC

One of SMU"s four losses this season came against USC, when the Trojans took down the Mustangs78-73 in a November game in California. Of course, the two teams are very different from when they last met. SMU is 26-2 since that meeting, while USC is 20-9. The SMU team agrees that this matchup is very different from the last one.

"We"ve come a long way since the first matchup," Sterling Brown said. "I feel like we got better in all areas and we"re just ready, ready for the game."

Tim Jankovich also feels that smuhas evolved greatly from their last matchup.

"I doubt something that happened in November is probably the biggest deal," Jankovich said. "I know we are a completely different team that we were then."

The fact that SMU lost earlier thisyear gives them extra motivation for this rematch.

"It definitely does (give us extra motivation)," Brown said. "Getting the chance to play them again, that"s something special... we got a lot behind us."

Ben Moore echoed Brown"s thoughts.

"We"re excited to play them again," Moore said. "We feel like we owe "em one."

Last Shot at March Madness for Sterling Brown and Ben Moore

While they are the winningest class in the history of SMU"s program,Ben Moore and Sterling Brown have still not won an NCAA Tournament game. They consider it crucial to win a game this year.

"It would mean everything because what we"re trying to build is winning basketball," Moore said.

In itslast tournament, SMU was also a six seed playing against a school from Southern California, and they lost in heartbreaking fashion. Brown shared one lesson that he learned from his previous experience in the Big Dance.

"I mean, pretty much just take every possession, just cherish it," he said. "Don"t take it for granted. Late in the game we gave up a couple easy baskets and turned the ball over. You gotta take care of every possession."

This will be first time drakeand Thugger have collaborated on a song, despite the fact that the Atlanta rhymeropened for Drake when he was on tour in the U.K. and openlypraised him as 1 of the realist rappers I know.

Additionally, there has also been news that rapperTravis Scott will also be making an appearance. Similar to Young Thug, theres no word yet on the song title, but given Scotts recent acclaim with the album Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, we can assume it will be a keeper. Drake and Scott previously collaborated on Company, which appeared on Drakes 2015 mixtape If Youre Reading This Its Too Late.

Scott may also be on hand to contribute as a producer, given his talent behind the boards for artists like Kanye West, Big Sean, and Jay-Z.
