Tough loss for Xavier alumni, fans

Xavier vs. Arizona: Extended Game Highlights
CINCINNATI

Many Muskie fans and alumni packed downtown bars for Xaviers Elite 8 game in the NCAA men"s basketball tournament.

Xavier nation watched intently, hopeful that its team could finally make history and punch a ticket to the Final Four this season. Instead, the X-Men met their match Saturday night against Gonzaga and walked away with a loss, 83-59.

The madness of March caught up with the Musketeers, leaving alumni sad to see the spectacular run come to an end.

I can"t be upset with it, they came out in this tournament and they showed really well. They definitely exceeded my expectations for them, alumnus Dave Rinck said.

You know, we played very good. I"m so proud, so proud, Xavier senior Lauren Uttam said.

The Queen City Exchange filled with a sea of blue Saturday. Two 2013 Xavier alumni co-own the downtown bar on Court Street.

Their 41 taps change prices just like the stock exchange, depending on what drinks are hot and which ones are not.

It"s really cool, to think that I get to watch Xavier, my alumni, in my own bar, it is a lot of fun to think about. And really to be able to offer a location to Xavier to host young alumni, things like that where they know they have a good spot and a friendly spot to watch the Muskies, co-owner Adam Stowe said.

We still feel very connected to Xavier. xavier alumni has been really, really great to us having watch parties here, so we feel as connected as we did as students, co-owner Nick Broerman said.

Frustrated fans feeling the agony of defeat, still believe this Xavier team had an incredible run.

They played great. Xavier played great. (It was a) great season; beyond my expectations, said fan Rob Feld, whose father played for Xavier in the "50s.

I"m not going to call it a Cinderella. They"ve got unfinished business. They"ll come back next year and they"ll be ready to play, Rinck said.

WEBVTT MANY STUNNED ANDDISAPPOINTED.FANS CHEERED ON XAVIER BUT THEMADNESS OF MARCH CAUGHT UP WITHTHE MUSKETEERS.ALUMNI SAD TO SEE THE TOURNAMENTRUN COME TO AN END.>> THEY CAME OUT AND SHOWEDREALLY WELL.THEY DEFINITELY EXCEEDED MYEXPECTATIONS FOR THEM.>> I AM SO PROUD.SO PROUD.>> 220 ALUMNI CO-OWNS THE BAR ONCOURT STREET.DEPENDING ON WHAT DRINKS ARE HOTAND WHAT IS NOT.>> THE FACT THAT I GET TO WATCHXAVIER, IT IS A LOT OF FUN.TO OFFER A LOCATION FOR XAVIER,THINGS LIKE THAT WHERE THEY CANHAVE A GOOD SPOT TO WATCH THEMUSKIES.>> WE FEEL VERY CONNECTED.XAVIER ALUMNI HAS BEEN VERYCONNECTED TO US.WE FEEL AS CONNECTED AS WE DIDAS STUDENTS.REPORTER: THEY STILL FEEL THETEAM HAD AN INCREDIBLE RUN.>> THEY PLAYED GREAT.GREAT SEASON, BEYOND MYEXPECTATIONS.>> THERE WERE PLENTY OF UPSETFANS.NOT TOO MANY TEARS.MANY ALUMNI SAY THEY WERE VERYIMPRESSED BY XAVIER"S SEASON.

Sedee Keita lifting South Carolina basketball with energy

Crazy scenes from Five Points afrer South Carolina basketball advances to the final 4

NEW YORK Sedee Keita watched from the bench Friday night as Baylor made a run to cut into south carolina basketballs hefty lead.

The Gamecocks freshman forward knew then that the next chance he had to get in the game could be important and he came in wanting to bring energy to his team. He did just that, racing across the court to track down a long offensive rebound, throwing it back into play and leading to a pair of Sindarius Thornwell free-throw attempts, along with a dose of encouragement from the USC senior.

It feels good to make a good play and have a guy like Sin, our leader, encourage me, Keita said.

The freshman has been making more of those plays lately, doing it again in South Carolinas 70-50 win Friday night to advance to the programs first Elite Eight. He has provided an added lift as a third post player recently, giving more reliable minutes and allowing starters Chris Silva and Maik Kotsar to take a breather.

His energy has been great, Thornwell said. The way he is coming in and giving Chris and Maik minutes and giving them rest, he has been rebounding and playing hard and being positive and giving us great energy.

When Keita wasnt on the court Friday night at Madison Square Garden, he often was frantically waving his arms at the crowd, imploring the USC faithful of which there were many to be loud and cheer on the team as it wore down Baylor.

RELATED: Gamecocks get same ridiculous fan support in New York

Its that same energy that the Gamecocks say he has brought to the floor when he comes in, but theres still work to be done for the highly-recruited Keita.

Hes behind what we need him to be offensively but defensively, hes being active, coach Frank Martin said. He blocked 2shots in the first half today, came up with a huge offensive rebound in a part of the game that allowed us to run a whole minute off the clock and shorten the game. Sedee is very active. Hes long, he doesnt understand our offensive concepts, so its hard to stay out there sometimes, but defensively, he helps us.

Keita played 13 minutes Friday, a total he has bested only once since Jan. 21. He didnt score, grabbing a pair of rebounds and blocking those aforementioned 2shots.

You could say my confidence is growing, Keita said. I just try to go out there and practice hard, understand what we are doing out there and play as hard as I can. I feel like Im keying in on what we have to do in the game and then going out and playing as hard as I can.

To Walk Invisible: the best books by and about the Bront sisters

To Walk Invisible: The Lives of the Brontë Sisters - Trailer

Chances are, theres a book by at least one of the Brontsisters on your bookshelf. It might be gathering dust, but itll be there, and it might be time to dig it out.

New PBS Masterpiece drama To Walk Invisible tells the story of Charlotte, Emily and Annes great novels and extraordinary battle for recognition, set against a backdrop of family struggle focused around their wayward brother Branwell.

Written by Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax), it takes readers back to the parsonage in Haworth, Yorkshire where Charlotte, Emily and Anne first turned to writing in the 1830s as escapism from their increasingly bleak-looking futures.

If you find yourself wanting to read the Bronts books or learn more about them after watching it, heres our pick of the offerings:

Books by theBronts

Wuthering Heights by EmilyBront

Kate Bushs warbling hit makes it impossible to forget this one, not that Emily needed her help. Literatures most devastating anti-love story is a passionate, gothic masterpiece, but Cathy and Heathcliffs obsessive, self-destructive relationship plays a supporting role to the evocative setting: the haunting Yorkshire moors. Far from a beach read it may be, but Emily"s sole novel is certainly a rewarding one.

Jane Eyre by CharlotteBront

Jane Eyre may be a school curriculum staple but dont let that put you off giving it another exam-free shot. Tenacious underdog Jane is the ultimate literary heroine, perhaps even more so than Pride and Prejudices Elizabeth Bennet. If nothing else, a read of this will leave you feeling a ton more thankful for your lot in life.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by AnneBront

Charlotte branded youngest sister Annes second novel an entire mistake (ouch), but Brontfans have judged it much more kindly. The story follows brave tenant Helen Huntingdon, who defies rigid social convention and leaves her alcoholic husband to protect their son from his influence, before carving a career as an artist. Feminism at its finest.

Villette by CharlotteBront

Charlottes final finished novel is her most depressing steer clear if you need cheering up but its a top choice if you find yourself craving a Valentines Day antidote come February. Protagonist Lucy Snowe may prove too complex a character for some, but the writing is undeniably sublime.

Agnes Grey by AnneBront

Charlottes Jane Eyre rather cruelly eclipsed Annes earlier novel, which also focuses on a plain governess search for fulfilment. The romance takes a backseat in this one, which sees Anne pick up her pen as a merciless social observer. Spoiler: Agnes does find love, but this story is about her career first and foremost, and its as cold, hard and real as a book about 19th century life gets.

The Bronts: Selected Poems by Everymans Poetry

The Brontes may be best known for their novels, but their enviable talents extended to poetry too. This is a selection of some of the finest examples, from studies of nature to character portraits, dark musings and deeply emotional reflections.

The Poems of Patrick Branwell Brontedited by Victor A Neufeldt

Branwell Bronte"s spiral into addiction is well-documented, but he did show literary promise as a child. Sadly, he struggled to handle rejection from publishers and soon dissolved in the trail blazed by his sisters. Still, Branwell has not been entirely forgotten, as this collection of his poetry attests.

Books about the Bronts

The Bronts: A Life in Letters by Juliet Barker

To Walk Invisibles intriguing title comes from a letter Charlotte sent to her publisher about the joy of privacy afforded to her by her pen name, Currer Bell. What author would be without the advantage of being able to walk invisible? she wrote. One is thereby enabled to keep such a quiet mind. The Bronts letters allow us to hear their authentic voices as they progress through childhood, adulthood struggles, illness, grief, loneliness and finally, for Charlotte, literary acclaim, love and happiness. Barker has done the hard graft for you, compiling a selection of the best in this new release. Her 1994 biography, The Bronts, comes highly recommended too.

The BrontMyth by Lucasta Miller

Its almost impossible to count the number of Brontbiographies published over the years. Miller addresses this, tracing the ways the authors have been interpreted through time in response to changing attitudes. Prepare to be disappointed if Anne is your favourite sister Charlotte and Emily take centre stage here, as does the art of biography itself.

The Infernal World of Branwell Brontby Daphne du Maurier

The obvious choice for fans of both the Bronts and du Maurier, this biography sees the author of Rebecca bring the shadowy figure of Branwell into the light in a bid to save him some face. The Bronts brother seemed destined for great things as a boy but adulthood spun him a different, troubled tale. Branwells descent into drugs and alcohol after an ill-fated affair is hard-hitting and deeply moving, especially in contrast with the dazzling successes of his sisters.

something a little different

wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

Rhys wrote this 1966 postcolonial novel as a prequel response to Jane Eyre, which sounds like a terrible idea but in this case thankfully wasnt one. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the backstory of madwoman in the attic Bertha Rochester, who is finally given a voice and identity as Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway. Gender and race relations are central themes to a book well worth delving into.

Alpharetta native makes Final Four with South Carolina

LIVE: Final Four Preparations and Safety in Arizona; Sean Spicer"s Daily White House Briefing;

Red-shirt junior forward Jarrell Holliman hasnt played much for South Carolinas mens basketball team this season, but hes still part of the roster that led the Gamecocks to their first appearance in the final four of the NCAA mens basketball tournament.

The 6-foot-7 Alpharetta native has played in 15 games for the Gamecocks this season during their run to college basketballs biggest stage. He last tallied minutes for Frank Martins side in their regular season finale, a five-point loss to Ole Miss.

Holliman last scored points for South Carolina in its Jan. 24 win over Auburn, where he tallied two points, two rebounds and a steal in five minutes of play.

ELITE! South Carolina basketball makes first Elite 8 in program history

(4) Florida vs. (7) South Carolina

NEW YORK The unbelievable has become completely believable for South Carolina basketball.

The Gamecocks did it again, winning another NCAA Tournament game after the program went more than four long decades without a single tournament win. And they did it largely in the same way they did last weekend, stifling another high-powered offense with its intense defense and scoring the basketball at a high rate in what no longer is a real surprise.

South Carolina is going to the first Elite 8 in school history, blasting past Baylor in a 70-50 win Friday night at Madison Square Garden to move within one game of a Final Four berth. The Gamecocks will face the Florida, with a trip to Phoenix and the Final Four bid on the line at 2:20 p.m. Sunday.

We are not stunned, guard PJ Dozier said. We know that when this team came together, we had the opportunity and we knew we could be in the position that we are in. We are not stunned.

What the Gamecocks are doing is becoming increasingly less stunning to anyone. For the second straight game, they knocked off a team that was ranked No. 1 during the season. Theyre in uncharted waters now for the program, diving deeper into the postseason than any that has come before.

Its a good feeling when we continue to make history, senior Duane Notice said. I think once we got a taste of it, we kind of got addicted and want to continue doing it.

Sindarius Thornwell continued his blitz through the tournament, scoring 24 points and grabbing six rebounds. Dozier and Chris Silva had 12 points each for the Gamecocks, who also got 11 points from Notice.

But as has been the case of late, it was the South Carolina defense that got the job done. The Gamecocks held Baylor to a season-low 50 points, limiting the Bears to 30.4 percent shooting and 23.1 percent shooting from 3-point range. The ferocious defense forced Baylor into 16 turnovers, while allowing 17 field goals.

Many Gamecocks had the battle scars to prove their efforts afterward, as both Thornwell and Dozier had scratches on their face as evidence of a battle on the floor at MSG.

It was a dogfight, Thornwell said. A lot of people dont like those games. A lot of people are pretty and dont want to get pumped around. Thats our game. Thats what we go to.

South Carolina broke the game open with an 18-0 run that spanned the back half of the first half. It all started with a Dozier floater off the glass to tie the game 15-15. By the time it ended, the Gamecocks were ahead 31-15, Madison Square Garden was roaring and South Carolina was racing toward being one of the final eight teams standing.

We knew that we had the game in our control and we had to keep it going, Thornwell said.

Notice put USC ahead 18-15 with a well-executed set out of a timeout. Thornwell crossed over in transition and banked in a tricky finish. Silva hit two free throws and Dozier hit a free throw. Rakym Felders floater was true late in the shot clock and so was Thornwells. A Silva jumper and Thornwell free throws pushed the run to 18-0.

I think it was defense, Dozier said of the run. At the end of the day, the ball has to go in the basket to get points. The offense takes a big part in it, but we make our offense out of our defense and I think that really helped us.

South Carolina had to weather a second-half run from Baylor, which quickly went on a 10-0 spurt sparked by a pair of Manu Lecomte 3-pointers to pull within 11.

But Thornwell and Notice didnt let the Gamecocks wilt, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to squash the push and extend the lead back to 17.

Your two seniors step up, coach Frank Martin said. The other team is making a run and your two seniors step up to the plate and make shots to stop the run.

The lead grew as large as 22 for the Gamecocks late in the second half, when the game was well in hand and the celebration at Madison Square Garden was already under way for south carolina fans.

feeling pretty good, but the job isnt done, senior guard Justin McKie said. We wanted to get here to play Sunday. Thats what we get an opportunity to do.

Player of the game

Thornwell

I mean, yeah.

Turning point

The Gamecocks were sitting well early, until Baylor went on a 7-0 run to take the lead.

But then an 18-0 run happened and it was all South Carolina to close the first half.

Whats next for South Carolina basketball

South Carolina will face the winner of Wisconsin-Florida on Sunday afternoon.

Bangladeshis celebrate Independence Day

Independence Day special - by Kol Balish

Abu Dhabi: Bangladeshs achievements in infrastructure development are worth a special celebration, a top Bangladeshi diplomat said here on sunday on the occasion of the nations 47th Independence Day.

On Independence Day, we also celebrate our nations achievements. We are proud of Bangladeshs progress in infrastructure development, especially the 40 per cent completion of 6km-long bridge costing $4billion [Dh 14.68 billion] on Padma river without any foreign funding, said Mohammad Imran, the Bangladeshi ambassador to the UAE. Due to be completed in 2018, the bridge linking the central and southern parts of the country will be an iconic achievement, he said.

The ambassador was speaking to Gulf News on the sidelines of the Independence Day celebrations at the Bangladeshi embassy in Abu Dhabi. Bangladeshs governments recent decision to establish a $10-billion (Dh37.6 billion) sovereign investment fund to support infrastructure development will also be a shot in the arm, he added.

Imran raised the national flag and paid floral tributes in front of pictures of national leaders at the event attended by a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates.

Speaking to Gulf News, Jalal Hussain, 38, a construction worker who has been living in Abu Dhabi for 10 years, said he was proud to highlight the progress he witnessed in his home country. I was really proud to notice progress in road network in recent years in cities like Dhaka. When I visited home last time, 2.5 years ago, the change was easily identifiable as I am living abroad, Hussain said.

Mahfusul Rahman, 30, a salesman, said Bangladesh has succeeded in making its presence felt in the international arena in recent years. Earlier my young country was not known at all. When I watch international news, I find the difference now. Many successful small rural development projects have attracted international attention, he said.

Zakir Hussain, 54, an electrical engineer, said that, for him, Independence Day was an occasion to remember martyrs who sacrificed their lives to win the countrys freedom. I pay my tributes to them, he said.

The ambassador also hosted a reception for invited guests including UAE officials, foreign diplomats and community members on Sunday evening to celebrate the occasion.
