Magnus Karlsson, editor-in-chief at the daily Smalandsposten said on its website that he doesnt want the newspapers brand to be spread with a potentially viral and erroneous story.
The fake news phenomenon broke out amid the 2016 US presidential election and grew even further when Donald Trump, during his first press conference on January 11 as then president-elect, shouted at a CNN reporter: You are fake news!
Now, several local daily Swedish newspapers including Dalarnas Tidningar, Hallpressen and Vasterbottens-Kuriren have refrained from publishing April Fools Day jokes.
Historically, weve had super successful April Fools jokes. But because of debates and discussions about the medias credibility being connected to fake news, we didnt want to do it this year, Ingvar Naslund, editor-in-chief at Vasterbottens-Kuriren told TT.
Erik Berger, editor-in-chief at the daily Jonkopings-Posten told AFP that his newspaper would write in (Saturdays) edition about why they wont publish such jokes.
In neighbouring Norway, the largest media organisations such as public broadcaster NRK, newspaper Aftenposten, VG and Dagbladet have also abandoned this old tradition.
NRK said local newspapers would follow suit.
Oyulf Hjertenes, editor at the local daily Bergens Tidende, told NRK that in a climate where false news is spreading, it would be a mistake on our part to publish jokes on April 1.
Kristin Monstad, publishing editor at Drammens Tidende, added: What is written in Drammens Tidende must be true.
Its been a decade since Dr. Addison Montgomery leftSeattle Grace Hospital for her Private Practice, but starKate Walsh said she thinks about ABCs Greys Anatomy daily.Walsh plays a grieving mother in the new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which premieredFriday on the streaming service.
Besides the show, Walsh has a busy year ahead of her with roles in theLiam Neeson thriller Felt, the road trip comedy Girls Trip opposite Queen Latifah, and the new Pop series Get in My Van, which shes also producing.
Walsh is currently starring in the play If I Forget in New York, but took the time to talk to Variety about preparing for her role in 13 Reasons Why and howGreys Anatomy is still going strong 12 years after its premiere.
Between TV, film, and theater, is their a mediumyou like more than the other or do they all have the same amountof pros and cons?
I think each one is fun for various reasons. To do a series like 13 reasons why, with 13 episodes, is similar to what it was like doing [FXs] Fargo. Its kind of like doing a book, where its almost like a longer movie where its fun to keep exploring a character, so thats a luxury. With a movie, its a little shorter, like Girls Trip, a big R-rated comedy, which was so fun. Theinteresting thing about last year was I felt like I was on an airplane or traveling more then I was actually shooting. It was awesome to go from doing Felt, the Liam Neeson film where I play this boozy FBI person, to 13 Reasons, where I play this grieving mother, and then going to New Orleans to play this raunchy R-rated character in Girls Trip. It was fun having this kind of schizophrenic experience with all these roles.
Is it tough as an actor jumping from various types of characters where one week youre playing a grieving mother and then the next youre playing a lighter, more fun character in Girls Trip, or does it help the process?
I think it helps at least it does for me. Its cathartic and sort of helpful because you can leave the Olivia Baker character from 13 Reasons Why in the BayArea and get on the plane and shed her a little bit. Even when I was going on the plane from L.A. to the Bay Area, I wouldnt become her til I got off the plane, though I will say on the way from Burbank to Oakland, I would get a little sick thinking here we go again, because it was a really heavy place and I really wanted to do honor to parents who have gone through this horrific, unimaginable, experience in their life. With the help of directors like Tom McCarthy and Brian Yorkey, and all the other amazing writers and directors, I was able to do that. It was also important to me that I leave that there and not carry that around for seven months.
What was it about this character in 13 Reasons Why that stuck out and made you want to take on the part in the first place?
Two things always help in making my decision on whether I take the part. One is story and the other is character, and sometimes one eclipses the other. Sometimes Im like, oh this is a great piece, even if the role is smaller and if the people involved are so incredible. So it was a little bit of that when it came to this project, also this script was a page turner, it was so well written and compelling. So I got on the phone with Tom [McCarthy] and Brian [Yorkey] and talked about what they wanted to do because I didnt how much of it would be sort of an insulated piece about the high school experience and how much of it would include my character. And they also wanted to talk about how important it was to involve the adult world and her parents, and how that experience could be part of the story. I also knew Tom from way back and hes pretty talented and has won some awards lately and Brian won a Pulitzer, so I really trusted them and loved the piece, but I did thinkcarefully about playing this role because it was really heavy. It was a beautiful thing to fly back and forth and go into the world and then head out of it. For me to go in and out and play this mother, and then leave and go drink wine inNapa or leave and play this insane character in Girls Trip there was kind of great catharsis to it.
Was there a rewarding part to playing this role while you were filming or after the production was done?
Oh yeah, so one of the final things we shot, it was like being part of a great piece of music and finding that sweet spot. It was hugely rewarding only because I feel like I did my job well. Again, it was beautiful experience because I trusted the people I was working with. I love working with talented actors. I come from Chicago theater, which is a lot of ensemble-based plays and its a lot about being a service to the story and to your fellow actors, I really love that. So to really play with Katherine[Langford] and Kyle [Patrick Alvarez]and Tom [McCarthy], it was a really wonderful experience to just let go and trust that everyone will do their job.
So Greys Anatomy is going into its 14th season and you were one of its early veterans, when you joined at the end of Season 1. Did you ever see this show having the longevity its had, and continuingto be as popular as it was when it first started?
No, there isnt a day that goes by that I dont think about it because it was like a family. I think about it the way you think about your family or home when you move away. Im like wow its still going on. I think about Ellen [Pompeo] and how shes directing now, I think about the evolution of all my friends like Shonda [Rhimes], Katie [Heigl], and Isaiah [Washington]. I think about all of them all the time. Even though Ive been a working actor for a long time, that was a big deal and who would of known that it would turn into what it is now. I was only supposed to be a recurring character because I had another pilot that didnt end up getting picked up, so I ended up coming back and here I am. And now to see Shonda and Betsy [Beers], Shondas fantastic producing partner, still thriving, its exciting. It sounds corny, but there isnt a day that goes by that I dont think about one of them.

"I don"t wanna disappoint anybody and not be the skinny Mama June that everybody"s looking forward to," she said. "But if I go through with something that"s as serious as the next surgery, it can"t be about making everyone happy -- it"s gotta be about me."
At this point, Mama June had already undergone a number of surgeries, which were featured in the episodes gearing up to the highly anticipated finale. However, these two new procedures were a bit riskier than the others, the one on her neck, specifically. "Recovering from the surgery is hard enough," her 11-year-old daughter, Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, explained.
Later on in the episode, cameras were fully focused on Mama June -- who previously weighed a reported 460 pounds -- just moments after her final two surgeries, all bandaged up while sitting in her hospital bed. Despite the pain, she appeared to be in good spirits.

"I"m doing pretty good," she said, when medical assistant Brenda asked her how she was feeling and informed her everything went great. "I just hope the pain doesn"t last as long as it did last time."
Meanwhile, Honey Boo and sister Lauryn "Pumpkin" Thompson, 17, were at home, patiently waiting to see their mom for the first time in three weeks.

"Today"s the big day," Honey Boo exclaimed, as Mama June"s sister, Doe Doe, arrived to their home. "She"s coming home from California. They wouldn"t let her come home until they could make sure that she wouldn"t have no nerve damage."
"And I"m really scared that I"m not even going to recognize who she is," she continued, just moments before the big reveal.
"Her double chin is gone, her bat wings are gone, she"s going to look like a completely different person," added Pumpkin. "Uh oh, someone"s coming to the door..."
While all the initial reactions were just as shocking as we expected, none were better than Honey Boo Boo"s, who gasped when she took one look at her new and improved mama.
"Oh, my Lord," she said, before seeing her mother for the first time after Mama June"s final surgeries in Los Angeles -- with medical bandages wrapped around her head.
Unfortunately for Mama June, it wasn"t all happy news. As fans who have been keeping up with the series know, Mama June was looking forward to wearing her "revenge dress" to the nuptials.

On Friday, Netflix released the highly anticipated 13 Reasons Why an adaptation of the popular book by Jay Asher, courtesy of Selena Gomez with Butler playing Zach.
Variety spoke with Butler about 13 Reasons Why, Riverdale and playing parts that arent necessarily Asian roles.
How was working on Selena Gomez passion project 13 Reason Why?
It was amazing. It was not a show I was expecting of Selena. This seemed like a complete 180. When I heard that she was a part of it, it was really interesting and drew me to it. After I got to work with her, I have some much more respect for her and the message shes trying to put out there.
Tell me about Zach. How does he fit into the mystery?
Hes one of the reasons. Hes one of the jocks there are a few that are involved and hes not the smartest guy, but he definitely has an emotional side to him that people dont expect because he puts on this front.
Both 13 Reasons Why and Riverdale share a lot of similarities. Both cover modern issues faced by high schoolers like bullying and depression, and both end up with a student at the school dead. What was different about 13 Reasons Why, or Zach compared to Reggie, that drew you to the show?
With Riverdale its a murder mystery. You dont know who the killer is, and you dont know why. Over the course of the season youre meeting new characters and youre learning new information about them. with 13 reasons why you start off knowing that the girl Hannah (Katherine Langford) committed suicide, and you know that there are 13 reasons. It unfurls through the season which I thought was a super unique way of telling a mystery.
In terms of Reggie and Zach being different, Id say Reggie is a jock through and through. Hes loud, and obnoxious, and doesnt care what people think. With Zach hes much more grounded, for me, in reality. Hes a jock that has very dark and lonely feelings, and throughout the first season you really witness what happens with him.
Jumping over to Riverdale, how has it been working with material as iconic as Archie comics?
Its really interesting, and not what I expected. When I first saw the breakdown for the characters, I didnt know it was going to be a murder-mystery. They were keeping that a secret. Reggie was originally Caucasian, and when they brought me in I got very excited thinking, Yes, we actually get to do the reverse of whats usually done in Hollywood. That personally was really fun to get some ethnicity in there from the Asian-American side.
It was also fun to take this family-friendly comic and make it super dark by throwing in a murder. There are all these characters that you associate with being colorful and happy, and you get to see their darker side. The writers did a great job making it current and gritty.
Theres been a lot of talk about the lack of Asian actors in TV and film. As an actor playing a character who was originally Caucasian, whats your take on it?
Its something that were all aware of and something thats really talked about. There are no Asian leading men in Hollywood. Theres not an Asian Ryan Gosling or an Asian Brad Pitt. Reggie was important to me because he isnt seen as an Asian character, because he wasnt. Hes just known as one of the guys, and in a comic that was based in American culture. The show is no different. Im not the Asian kid of Riverdale; Im Reggie and I just happen to be Chinese.
Its important because its telling the story that Asian-Americans are in American culture. Theyre a big part of our population. Its a stepping stone to helping find our Asian-American leading movie stars. Thats the next step.
The show just got renewed for a second season. Is there anything that youd like to see happen to Reggie in Season 2?
I think that Reggie needs to have a dog. Reggies dog has been a big character in the comics. Archie has a dog in the show, but I dont have a dog. I want a dog. Id also like to explore more of Reggies family life. We dont really get to see them at all, and in the comics there are some interesting stuff about them and how theyre never really there. Thats definitely something Id like to explore.
13 Reasons Why is available now on Netflix. Riverdale airs Thursdays on the CW.
