Oh my G*d, the Redskins ran another goal line fade

Skip and Shannon Undisputed - Redskins Defeat Packers(42-34): Kirk Cousins:375 Yds, 3TD

You threw the fade again, Sonny Jurgensen said to Redskins Coach Jay Gruden after Sundays Redskins loss in Arizona, sadness and disappointmentsoftly dripping from his voice.

Yeah, we threw the fade, said Gruden, who has been down this road with Jurgensen before. And Patrick [Peterson] made a good play on it. We just overthrew it a little bit.

And so we can end that discussion for this week, and move on to more pre . . . oh. Right. Nope!

People still want to talk about that failed third-down fade route to DeSean Jackson, in which Washingtons small and fast receiver was covered by Arizonas best cornerback. It didnt work.

I was dumbfounded by the play, said Santana Moss on csns redskinstalk. i expected a little more of using [Jacksons] abilities. I remember in 2014 seeing DeSean have a good matchup against Patrick [Peterson], running slants, being able to be cat-quick with his ability. And to see him sit there and have to run a fade, it just seems to me when they get down there they have no solution. They have nothing else but to say Hey, lets throw a fade to someone and hopefully well get lucky. So theyve got to come better with some better plays down there.

The fade has been something of a dirty word in Washington since the Week 2 loss to the Cowboys, when the Redskins attempted approximately 734 goal-line fades without scoring.

Coach, why do people fall in love with the short fade down at the goal line? Jurgensen asked Gruden after that loss. We tried it three times!

Yeah, we tried it three times, and well try it again three times next week if we have to, Gruden responded.

There hasnt been a good fade outrage since then, but neither has there been much red-zone success. Sundays dalliance came on a third-and-one play near the end of the first half, with the Redskins desperate for a touchdown. It went toward Jackson, one of Washingtons smaller players. It didnt work, leading to a field goal. And that kicked off yet another round of questions about Washingtons goal-line offense, starting with Washingtons radio crew.

Im gonna leave that one to you, Sonny, Chris Cooley cracked.

Theres Sonnys fade, his favorite play, and its incomplete, Larry Michael added

Its not my favorite play! Jurgensen protested.

You know, its not my favorite play, and I also dont like challenging Patrick Peterson in that situation, Cooley said. You throw the fade at their best player? I really dont like that decision. And I dont know if thats a Sean [McVay], a Jay [Gruden] or a Kirk [Cousins] decision, whether you work somewhere else, but I dont work at Patrick Peterson on the fade.

Youve got to see something different, youve got to see something more, Moss said. The fade just threw everybody off. Right now Im still lost, because I dont have more to talk about it. And Im still wondering why, especially on Patrick Peterson.

Not only is there a failure [to run it in], there is not an attempt to run it in, Clinton Portis said on ESPN 980. Thats the worst part. We dont attempt to run it in.

I remember someone on this team the owner who left some vanilla ice ream on a desk of the defensive coordinator, Brian Mitchell said on CSN. Well thats what they should do to this offense. They run the same plays in the same rhythm every d**n time, until they get into the red zone, and then they dont know what theyre doing. So for me, the coaches have to do things a little better so when the players go into games, theyre given the best opportunity to win.

For me inside the red zone is all Im really concerned about, because from 20 to 20 this team is the best team out there, Mitchell later said on ESPN 980. Someone says [offensive coordinator] Sean McVay is a genius. Well the only genius I know is ones that score touchdowns on a regular basis. Not the ones that cant get in the end zone and have to keep kicking field goals. So for me, theyve got to figure out a way in the red zone to take chances. . . . An offense with all these weapons, and you get down in the red zone and its like you dont know whats going on or how to attack or who to use or what to do. It just doesnt seem right, doesnt seem sensible to me.
