ArrivalArrival is an ominous, thrumming, beautiful thing that starts out being about aliens who need a decoder ring. It ends up being about something quite different. Based on Ted Chiangs 1998 short story Story of Your Life, with a screenplay adapted by Eric Heisserer, Arrival is about Big Thingsand the manner in which Villeneuve gets to them, as his camera slowly traces structures and landscapes both familiar and strange, cant help but surprise and impress. Arrival finds nuance and surprise in a way that not only echoes the nuance and surprise of language, but in a way that echoes other forms of communication, tooforms of communication that, like language, have the power to change how we feel and how we think. Visually and aurally remarkable, Arrival sometimes unfolds like a clever puzzle and other times like a raw-nerve thriller; throughout, with heart and wit, Heisserer and Villeneuve never lose sight of the films characterscreatures in a situation thats weird and mournful, exciting and threatening. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them"I"m annoying," says Eddie Redmayne to Dan Fogler in the opening half-hour of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Hes like Doctor Who with gout, and yetjust like the good Doctor in even his lamest incarnations, theres just enough charm glimmering beneath the surface and shining through the contrivances that you cant write him off entirely. Fantastic Beasts, featuring an original screenplay by J.K. Rowling, is annoying in the manner of Scamander: It is eager to please and amaze, but undersells its spectacle until that spectacle becomes perfunctory. Its a goofy blast of kid-lit in love with Looney Tunes-inspired adventureexcept when its a sour metaphor for child abuse and intolerance that owes one h**l of a debt to Stephen Kings famous prom queen. But somehow, the two stories are sewed together just tightly enough that the TV pilot-esque clumsiness of Fantastic Beasts (there will be four more of these films, likely transforming ASAP into The Dumbledore Prequels) can be forgiven for the power in its climax. BOBBY ROBERTSPlaying at: Crest (Shoreline)Won award for: Costume Design

FencesRecently, while leaving a screening of the solid and engaging film adaptation of August Wilson"s play Fences, which was directed by Washington himself, a man walking behind me said to the woman walking next to him that this is not the kind of Denzel Washington film he likes. It"s too act-y, it"s all about the Academy Awards. Clearly, he wanted Washington to shoot more and talk less. But Fences has no guns and a whole lot of talking about lifeit deals with failed dreams, race relations in mid-century America, marital problems, parenting problems, working-class problems, drinking problems, problems with debts, mental health, and, ultimately, death. What might kill the character Washington plays in Fences, Troy Maxson, is not a car chase or a shoot-out, but blocked arteries to the heart. He is a normal guy with a very standard suite of personal and social issues. CHARLES MUDEDEPlaying at: Landing Stadium 14 (Renton)Won: Supporting Actress (Viola Davis)

La La LandYou guys, I LOVED La La Land, and you will too. Dont be afraid of it just because its a musical about a struggling actress (Emma Stone) and a pretentious jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) who meet and fall in love and sing and dance in a romanticized, cartoony LA. Yeah, its splashy and grandiose and full of hazy violet Southern California sunsets, but its emotional core is genuine. Take it from shriveled-hearted me, the Unearned Sentiment Police: La La Land is a grand, over-the-top, razzly-dazzly love story that wont make you puke one bit. It might even help you forget the horrors of reality, however momentarilyand after the year weve had, that practically makes La La Land a public service. MEGAN BURBANKPlaying at: Big Picture, Pacific Place, Seven Gables, AdmiralWon: Lead Actress (Emma Stone), Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Cinematography, Production Design, Original Score, Original Song ("City of Stars")

Manchester by the SeaIn Manchester, Lee Chandler (Affleck) seems content to shovel walkways and unclog toilets for a living in Boston, until word comes that his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler, seen in flashbacks) has died of a heart attack. Joes will stipulates that he wants Lee to move back to his titular hometown and become Patricks guardian. Lee, however, is haunted by past events and resists, with a toddlers tenacity, every effort by the people around him to help him come to terms. I feel for the guy, and you will too, but after two hours, I wanted to grab him by the collar and tell him to buck up. MARC MOHANPlaying at: Bella Bottega, Oak TreeWon: Original Screenplay, Leading Actor (Casey Affleck)

MoonlightEver get left speechless? Hear, see, touch, or taste something so rare that you don"t want to bruise its petals with your clumsy analysis? That"s how I feel about Moonlightyet that is exactly what I must do. Moonlight pulses with subtle, lived-in details that may just feel like breathing memory to a whole generation of African Americans. I can"t imagine what it must be like to be Black and queer and see something as vital and rare as Moonlight for the first time. But what"s most unexpected is that these lives may just get to live, happily and understood, at least to some degree. America hasn"t left much room for that outcome, and neither has the art we see about it. Our narratives deliver tragedy, spectacle, and melodrama. Stories like Moonlight, told humanely and intelligently, with complexity, nuance, and hope, may help more of its children envision their own. LARRY MIZELL JR.Playing at: Sundance Cinemas, CineramaWon: Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Adapted Screenplay

No matter how you pronounce "paczki" just don"t call it a donut

Paczki Recipe - How To Make Polish Donuts
paczki Heard in the bakery line

Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, is the day of indulgence before the Christian fast known as Lent. For urban centers with large Polish and Polish-American populations, including Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Chicago, indulgence often means a paczki. Or, like, 12.

Proper pronunciation of this sinful jelly- or creme-filled donut, at least among non-Polish speakers, incites a debate only rivaled by the fight over which bakery does them best. Most people land somewhere around POONCH-key. But add in local dialect, or the effects of other Fat Tuesday imbibing, and POWNCH-key or PAUNCH-key sometimes emerges.

The recipe is similar to German, Jewish and Italian filled donuts, but traditional paczki contain a splash of Polish vodka called Spiritus, says Eater.com.

Read: For Mardi Gras, try this rum that was born on the Bayou

Poland itself digs in on Fat Thursday, which was February 23, six days before Ash Wednesday and, this year, 52 days before Easter. Chicago bakeries report they typically fry tens of thousands of paczki (yup, thats the plural) per day from Thursday through Tuesday.

Opinion: The toxic tale of those coveted Mardi Gras beads

And with its own twist, Detroit turns its paczki into a hotdog bun.

Prefer a no-calorie taste? #paczki is trending:

Iconic Swedish Bakery"s Last Day Draws 120-Person Line For Paczki

You love paczki, but can you say paczki?

About 120 customers lined up on Clark Street early Tuesday morning in Andersonville as today is the final day for Swedish Bakery. A neighborhood icon, the bakery will close today at 6:30 p.m., ending business after 88 years. There was an extra layer of excitement on this Fat Tuesday as the bakery is one of the many which celebrate a Polish-Chicago tradition, the paczki.

Customers showed up as early as 5 a.m. to line up, and others will arrive later today, but the latter may be left with only breadcrumbs. News crews descended to fill their morning broadcasts as head baker Dennis Stanton surveyed the scene from outside his bakery as customers slowly trudged inside. He quietly ducked inside through the side entrance.

Stantons family is Greek and German, and they purchased the bakery 38 years ago from a Swedish family. Andersonville, Chicagos Swedish enclave, counted on the bakery for nearly a century for birthday cakes, cookies, breads, and other baked goods. Many customers dont know where theyll go for baked goods after Tuesday.

I have no idea what Ill do without it, said Heather McAllister, one of the customers crammed inside.

The historic bakery wasnt a spot to connect on WiFi with a laptop, which can be a requisite nowadays to draw younger customers. In a previous interview with the Tribune, Stanton said that millennials looked for a food experience, but Swedish Bakery was merely humdrum. It was time to close, he said, as the family doesnt have a younger member to take over the business. The building is up for sale.

The bakery limited available quantities in its final days. Some customers anticipated the rush and pre-ordered so they could skip the line and just pickup their food. However, if they wanted more than that pre-order, they needed to take a number for additional items. There was no circumventing the line. Some customers said theyll throw a few goods into the freezer for safe keeping, as theyll last for about five months when frozen.

Katy Kraeger drove down from Milwaukee on Monday and woke up at 5:30 a.m. to come in today with her father, Pete Kraeger. Katy Kraegers grandparents moved to Andersonville in 1960. The bakery was a family tradition. Todays order would include cookies, marzipan cake, paczki and coffee cake.

It was a place to get something special, my parents had six kids so it wasnt like we could come up here and buy cookies [frequently], Pete Kraeger said. For special occasions we would come up here and get cookies or coffee cake.

Dont forget about the paczki, as the bakery had 16 flavors available. Surat Bashorun said shes sampled them all, but shes partial to one in particular. Oh my G*d, the pineapple is the best! she said, gushing.

About 40 employees worked at the bakery, and the Stantons are working to find them new jobs. While many customers walked out with smiles, holding big bags loaded with pastries, there was also a bit of sadness even for those working behind the counter.

What is "Fat Tuesday" and why do we eat pancakes on that day?

Celebrate Fat Tuesday in Indy with the Gumbo Cook-Off

AX051_754C_9.JPG

Tuesday is "Fat Tuesday" also known as "pancake day," so stop by your favorite Staten Island diner or lunch place and order a stack. This stack is from the Dakota Diner, Graniteville. (Staten Island Advance file photo/Anthony DePrimo)

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --In 2017 "Fat Tuesday" -- which is also known as "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day" -- falls on February 28.

Christians around the world traditionally feast on pancakes, crepes, and other batter-made sweets on the day. So where does that tradition come from?

  • The day falls on the last day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, which in 2017 falls on March 1.
  • Fat Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies each year but will be between February 3 and March 9.
  • The word "shrove" comes from the term "shrive", meaning to free yourself from sin.

  • Christian families were encouraged by the clergy to clear out their cupboards to remove the fattening foods from their houses before midnight.

  • The tradition of eating pancakes, allows families to use up all their eggs, butter, milk and flour all in one dish.

  • It"s believed that pancakes represent the four pillars of the Christian faith: eggs for creation, flour for sustenance, salt for wholesomeness and milk for purity.

(Tell us what you"ll be doing for Fat Tuesday. Will you be making or enjoying pancakes this day? Use the Comment section below.)

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: New alerts, and what"s happening now

What is the climate like in Seattle, WA? Seattle Realtor Talks About Weather Condtions

(Constellation Park, 2:30 this afternoon photo by Jason Bell)

4:26 PM: Following up on our midday coverage of water and mud trouble more weather news this afternoon. First, three National Weather Service alerts you should know about:

*The Special Weather Statement about slide risk, mentioned in our earlier coverage too.

(Off Alki Point this afternoon photo by Bruce Easter)

*Another Coastal Flood Advisory for the early-morning high tide tomorrow the water could be at least a foot higher than predicted because of weather factors.

*wind advisory for 8 am-3 pm tomorrow, with sustained wind from the southwest 20-35 mph and gusts to 50 mph.

But the mud is todays trouble. If youre using the main Vashon Island ferry dock, for example, heres a problem:

The King County Transportation Department sent word of a significant landslide that occurred this afternoon on 103rd Avenue Southwest near the Vashon Ferry Terminal parking lot. Crews are working to channel ferry traffic onto Vashon Highway Southwest instead of 103rd. Crews estimate it will take about eight hours to clear debris from the road. Travelers in the area should expect delays.

Meantime, Ted Ellis sent this photo of mud along Seola Beach Drive:

Ted says, This is one of three different slides and part of the road looks like a pretty big wall of mud might come down. Were off to check on a few other things more to come.

4:54 PM: We went back to West Marginal Way SW, a short way north of Highland Park Way, and discovered SDOT crews are still there:

One to two SB lanes are blocked there as crews work on water and debris trouble, so southbound traffic is being diverted into the center lane for a short distance. We have also gone by a trouble spot on which reported this morning Delridge at Myrtle; the northbound lane is still fairly well puddled.

5:50 PM: We also went to Seola Beach Drive for a look at the slide mentioned above. There are indeed multiple spots with signs along the southbound side of the road, in the section thats greenbelt on both sides heres the most-sizable slide spot on the slope:

Its not blocking a travel lane, so far.

10:55 PM: King Countys Brent Champaco sent this update on the Vashon slide:

103rd Avenue SW on Vashon Island near the north ferry terminal will remain closed until 5 a.m. tomorrow morning (Friday, Feb. 10) From 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. the roadway will be open to northbound traffic only in order to accommodate ferry rush hour traffic. At 9 a.m. the roadway will close so clean up crews can continue their work. Clean up is taking longer than expected due to the amount of debris including a large tree.

Your Long Runs Could Be Killing Your s*x Drive

Drive - Tak Terbalas (Official Video)
Credit: Mike Kemp / Getty Images

Before you kill yourself trying to break a marathon record, consider the latest research published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. There appears to be a (somewhat) inversely proportional relationship between length and intensity of endurance exercise and male libido. That means your longest, hardest training sessions may leave you too depleted for s*x. Bummer, right?

ALSO: Erectile Dysfunction Getting You Down? There"s a s*x Toy for That

Research by our group and others has shown that men engaged in chronic endurance training are more likely to induce low levels of testosterone, a hormone associated with libido, says Dr. Anthony Hackney, the study"s lead researcher from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. According to the survey results compiled and analyzed by Hackneys research team, men who racked up more than 10 hours of training per week, and those whose training intensities were self-reported as greater than 70 percent of their VO2 max, were most likely to be categorized as having a low s*x drive.

But before you swear off exercise completely (because, who could blame you, really?), the good news is that low to moderate levels of endurance exercise dont appear to negatively impact sexual health at least to a noticeable degree. And if youre more of a strength-focused athlete, you could be completely in the clear. Strength-trained athletes work very hard, but the nature of their training doesnt usually result in as large a volume of training dosage, Hackney says.

In other words, training for a 5k or hitting a CrossFit workout probably wont put a dent in your desire, but if you spend year after year logging hours of training for marathons, Ironmans, and other extreme endurance races, you may have the s*x drive of a much older man. The combination of regular, exhaustive exercise and reduced testosterone levels dont add up to extreme acrobatics in the sack.

ALSO: What to Do If Your Partner Has a Low s*x Drive

Of course, Dr. Hackney and his team didnt set out to fix any one mans personal sexual performance deficits. Rather, the team aimed to link high levels of chronic male endurance training to possible fertility problems and low s*x drive is, in fact, a fertility problem. Sorry guys.

While its fairly common knowledge that highly trained female athletes, particularly those with low body fat percentages, can experience problems with fertility, this is the first study of its kind that indicates highly trained male athletes may also experience similar problems a fact couples and doctors need to be aware of.

We hope clinicians will recognize the need to ask questions about what a man is doing with his exercise when they counsel couples who are seeking help with infertility issues, Hackney says. Exercise is wonderful. I truly believe that exercise is medicine, but if someone exercises, they need to recognize this doesnt prevent them from experiencing some negative health consequences.

Ben Bishop traded to LA Kings

Lightning trade Ben Bishop to Kings

The L.A. Kings have made a move aimed at bolstering their goaltending for the stretch drive, acquiring goalie Ben Bishop from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

That is according to TSNs Bob McKenzie on Sunday. The Kings have since officially announced the deal. Also going to the Kings is a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Meanwhile, going back to the Lightning is goalie Peter Budaj, defenseman Erik Cernak, a seventh-round pick in this years draft and a conditional pick this year, as well.

Per hockey insider Pierre LeBrun, the Bolts will retain some of Bishops salary in the move, although there wasnt a specific amount in the report. Bishop, who was injured in last years Eastern Conference Final, is a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, in the final year of a two-year, $11.9 million contract.

Despite impressive play in each of the last three seasons for Tampa Bay, his future with that organization had been uncertain for a while. This season, bishop has a record of 16-12-3 with a .911 save percentage.

The news comes one day after Jonathan Quick returned to the Kings crease after a 59-game absence due to a groin injury and was solid in a big win versus the Anaheim Ducks.

The Kings are, at least right now, three points out of the final wild card spot in the West.

Meanwhile, Budaj has been solid in net for the Kings, having taken over the starting duties when Quick was injured in October. He has a 27-20-3 record and a .917 save percentage. The Bolts are seven points out of the final wild card spot in the East.

Oscars 2017: From Priyanka Chopra to Emma Stone, the 10 best red carpet looks

Priyanka Chopra Interview | Red Carpet | Oscars 2017

While movies are at the core of the annual cinema extravaganza called the Academy Awards, fashion is also an integral part of this event. Many wait for it to see what their favourite celebrities will step out wearing. Like every year, the 89th Academy Awards aka the Oscars 2017 also had celebrities walking the red carpet in their finest. Most stuck to safe options in black and white, but a few others did experiment with the colour of the night gold.

Here are the looks we took note of:

1. Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra has mastered the art of making impressive entries at international red carpet events. Like 2016, this year, too, the actress opted for an ivory gown. But unlike the flow-y Zuhair Murad number (she wore last year), she settled for a Ralph & Russo structural silhouette this time around. Not everyone loved the look (one Twitter user compared it to a cardboard box), but we thought it was chic.

2. Meryl Streep

The Florence Foster Jenkins actress stunned in a navy blue Elie Saab Couture half gown, paired with pencil pants. The embellished off-shoulder upped the glamourquotient for the outfit.

3. Nicole Kidman

In a n**e beaded Armani Prive gown, Nicole Kidman looked graceful and elegant. Her choicealso showed off to perfection, her sculpted shoulders.

4. Naomie Harris

While Naomie Harris glamorous white Calvin Klein dress with an extended cape looked chic, her sandals grabbed more attention. The contrasting yellow asymmetrical stilettos were a great choice for this look.

5. Emma Stone

Emma Stone brought back the 60s with her gold Givenchy number that was accentuated with a lot of fringe. As the night panned out, her choice of colour proved to be the perfect complement to the Oscar she took home asBest Actress in a Leading Role for La La Land.

6. Taraji P Henson

Taraji P Hensons deep blue Alberta Ferretti velvet gown was all about Hollywood glamour. The thigh-high slit complete with an off-shoulder would have been perfect for accepting an Oscar in alas, she wasn"t nominated for Hidden Figures.

7. Kirsten Dunst

It was Dior Haute Couture that Kirsten Dunst opted for, for Oscar night. The voluminous off-shoulder gown was exquisitely feminine and perfect.

8. Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel redefined glamour in a body-skimming gold KaufmanFranco gown. The outfit had a blinding amount of bling, ensuring Jessica stood out.

9. Viola Davis

Viola Davis loves colour, and her past red carpet appearances are proof of this statement. At the Oscars, the Hollywood actor opted for yet another bright number by Armani Priv. The off-shoulder gown, which had a gathering at the neck, brought forth some much-needed brightness on the red carpet.

10. Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae also opted for Elie Saab like Meryl Streep, but her choice was much more dramatic. The elaborate tulle gown was covered with feathers and sequins with a sheer embellished bodice. In the past, Monae has said that she often opts for black and white for her outfits as a tribute to her working class roots.

With the women acing their style game, we have to say, the men don"t get much attention. But here are three who definitely make it to our honourable mentions list, just for being do dapper and sauve.

Ryan Gosling

The suave actor had a retro vibe about his look with a white ruffled shirt and a black velvet tuxedo by Gucci. It seems he wanted to stick to his look from the film he was nominated for, La La Land.

Dev Patel

Dev Patel moved things around in a Burberry monochrome suit. The white blazer-shirt combination with black trousers and a bow tie of the same colour was a sartorial win.

Mahershala Ali

The winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar made a sharp statement in a black Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo. The well-fitted suit only added to the actor"s aura on his big night.

Jimmy Kimmels act quickly grew stale as the evening wore on. He recycled segments from his late-night talk show (but with an Oscar twist!) and used Lion actor Sunny Pawar like a human doll. Then there was the tour bus gag, in which Mr. Kimmel brought unsuspecting tourists into the ceremony. It was among the most stressful, uncomfortable few minutes in awards show history. People should get to decide for themselves if they want to participate in Mr. Kimmels Oscar pranks. They didnt sign on to be instantly memed on Twitter and turned into caricatures.

Ruth Negga, nominated for best actress, wore one with a red floor-sweeping Valentino dress. Lin-Manuel Miranda wore a ribbon, too (as did his mother, Luz Towns-Miranda). The model Karlie Kloss attached hers to her white Stella McCartney dress. The A.C.L.U. had a surge in donations last month after President Trump issued his now-frozen travel ban.

Competition for looks is fierce and tempers run hot. Just before the Oscars, Karl Lagerfeld, the designer of Chanel, touched off an international incident by claiming, in Womens Wear Daily, that Meryl Streep commissioned, and then declined to wear, one of his gowns, saying she had been paid to wear one by another designer. Ms. Streep fired back, in no uncertain terms, in People. (Mr. Lagerfeld apologized.) Ms. Streep, for the record, there to celebrate her 20th Oscar nomination, ultimately chose a gown by Elie Saab. Nice dress, by the way, Jimmy Kimmel called out from the stage. Is that an Ivanka?

Viola Davis gives the best acceptance speeches. Her Emmy speech in 2015 was extraordinary, and this Oscar speech was even better: poetic, powerful, personal. (And prepared! Write your speech beforehand, folks.) Explaining that stories need to be exhumed, she said, Theres one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered. One place. And thats the graveyard. Whew. Now that is a line.

Fallon for The New York Times The Best Political Thank-You

After releasing a statement protesting President Trumps now-frozen visa ban for travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi made it clear he would not attend the Oscars in person. Then his drama The Salesman won for best foreign-language film and Mr. Farhadi sent a poignant follow-up message, read by a fellow Iranian, Anousheh Ansari, for the telecasts millions of viewers. The strongly worded condemnation of the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S. was one the loudest heard in a night full of muted political messages.

The coveted EGOT that is, having an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony to your name was within Lin-Manuel Mirandas reach this year. He had everything but the Academy Award, and his nomination for best song, for How Far Ill Go from Moana, seemed promising. But no such luck. City of Stars from La La Land took the prize. But Viola Davis moved a step closer to an EGOT with her win on Sunday for best supporting actress. She lacks a Grammy, but became the 23rd person to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony.

Susan Lucci won her first Emmy after 19 nominations. But Kevin OConnell has her beat: He finally won an Oscar for sound mixing on his 21st nomination. In the speech he had waited 34 years to give (he was first nominated for the 1983 drama Terms of Endearment), he made a point of mentioning his mother, Skippy OConnell, who helped get him his first job in sound. He recalled: When I asked her, Ma, how can I ever thank you? she looked at me and she said, You know, Ill tell you how you can thank me: You can work hard, you can work really hard, and some day you can go win yourself an Oscar, and you can stand up on that stage and you can thank me in front of the whole world. Mom, I know youre looking down on me tonight. So, thank you.

The Moana star Aulii Cravalho handled a run-in with a prop like a seasoned pro during her performance of her movies nominated song, How Far Ill Go. Nothing says the show must go on like a 16-year-old continuing to belt her way through a song after a flag hits the side of her head. She still looked so happy to be there, not even the stray prop could ruin her night.

Trump will not attend the White House correspondents" dinner

Questions about whether the dinner - an annual gathering of journalists and the people they cover, typically headlined by the sitting president - was appropriate had already existed before Trump took office. Since his inauguration and his increasingly fraught relationship with the press, however, calls to boycott the annual event have grown louder.

Liberal comedian Samantha Bee announced in January that she was planning an alternative event on the same night for "journalists and non-irritating celebrities from around the world." (Its tentative name: "Not the white house correspondents" dinner."
