Snow Covers New York City | "WINTER WEATHER EMERGENCY"
After a record high temperature in Central Park Wednesday, the city is expected to see as manyas 12inches of snow on Thursday.
A winter storm watch was issued for Thursdayas a snowstorm takes aim at New York City, the National Weather Service said.
A mix of snow and rainis expected to begin after midnight on Wednesday. It will turn to all snow by3a.m. Thursday, the NWS said. The winter storm watch will begin at midnight Wednesday and last through 6 p.m. on Thursday, the agency said.
The snow will impact the morning commute, with 3 to 5 inches falling by the morning, the NWS said. Total accumulations are between 8and 12inches, the agency predicts.
The storm is expected to peter out around 2 p.m. Thursday.
The expected snowfall is just the latest turn on a roller coaster of weather changes New Yorkers are facing this week.
A record high of 62 degrees was set in Central Park on Wednesday, the NWS said. The previous recordfor Feb. 8 was 61 degrees, set in 1965.
While temperatures wererelatively mild earlier this week,residents dealt with a deluge of rain on Tuesday. Meteorologist Jay Engle said just over a quarter of an inch fell by 3 p.m.; fog continued tolinger in the area until about 5 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to remain cooler for the rest of the week, with a high near 31 degrees and sunny skies on Friday.There is also another chance for snow Friday night between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Were at the time of year when the coldest weather is typically over, but there arent any guarantees. Weve had plenty of arctic events in February and even into March," meteorologist JoePollina said.
The average temperature recorded in Central Park this January was 38 degrees 5.4 degrees above the 32.6 average over the last 30 years. Yetthe park received almost an inch more snowfall than usual last month: 7.9 inches this January, compared with a 7-inch average.
