Attorney: Video exists of 'Suge' Knight in deadly run-in

As Marion "Suge" Knight sat jailed on suspicion of murder, dueling narratives cast him as attacker and victim in the hip-hop music mogul's latest and most serious run-in with the law.

Sheriff's deputies said he hit and killed a man with his pickup truck, injured another and then fled. His lawyer said he was an innocent victim who accidentally ran over his friend and the other man as he tried to escape an attack.

He turned himself in and was booked on Friday.

A better understanding about what happened Thursday afternoon may be found in a video that Knight's attorney said is in "police custody." Defense attorney James Blatt said he'll likely see it Monday or Tuesday, and he was confident it would vindicate his client who was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, on Saturday.

The incident was the latest in a long line of brushes with death and the law for the 49-year-old founder of Death Row Records, one of the genre's leading labels.

Knight started the label that helped solidify West Coast rap with Dr. Dre, who had been a member of the legendary group N.W.A. The label also launched the career of Snoop Dogg and had Tupac Shakur in the last months of his life.

The fatal run-in occurred a short while after Knight was told by deputies to leave a film location where he had argued with someone, authorities said.

The cast and crew were taking a break from filming a promotional video for the biopic "Straight Outta Compton," about the rise of N.W.A., according to a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to speak about it publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The argument resumed and escalated a short while later at a fast-food restaurant about two miles away, with Knight and the man exchanging punches through his open window. Knight then struck the man and a friend with his vehicle and fled, said sheriff's Lt. John Corina.

Terry Carter, 55, Knight's friend who authorities do not believe was involved in the altercation, died at a hospital, Corina said. The other man was identified by his manager as Cle "Bone" Sloan, 51, an actor and film consultant. He was hospitalized in stable condition, said manager Jermaine Shelton.

Corina said Knight backed up his pickup truck and knocked Sloan down.

"Then he puts the truck in drive, drives forward, running over him, and then keeps going forward and keeps on driving, and runs over Carter, who is standing in the parking lot, and keeps on going after that," Corina said.

He said witnesses told investigators it looked like an intentional act.

Defense attorney Blatt said Knight was called to Tam's Burgers in Compton for a meeting and was attacked by four people, including Sloan, as he slowed his truck. The men beat him through his window and threatened to kill him.

Corina said evidence thus far disputed Blatt's account, saying only one man exchanged blows with Knight through the window before he got run over.

The fatal run-in comes less than six months after Knight was shot six times at a West Hollywood nightclub in August the second shooting he's survived. No arrests have been made.

Knight punched the gas and fled in fear, Blatt said. He had no idea he hit two men. Corina said that claim is hard to believe.

Knight surrendered early Friday and was booked on suspicion of murder.

At 6-foot-4 and weighing 325 pounds, Knight's reputation as an imposing figure is credited, in part, with helping create Death Row Records when he strong-armed another label to release Dr. Dre from his contract, said Chuck Creekmur, CEO of allhiphop.com.

"You can't separate Suge from the music that came out of Death Row Records," Creekmur said. "He's linked forever to a really, really great musical period of time. And that would be linked to a really horrific period when we lost several of our brightest stars."

Knight was at the center of one of the most notorious rap conflicts of the 1990s, pitting rappers Tupac Shakur against Biggie Smalls in an East Coast versus West Coast rivalry.

Knight was sent to prison for nearly five years for badly beating a rival with Shakur at a Las Vegas hotel, just hours before Shakur was fatally shot while riding in Knight's car just east of the Strip.

Smalls, whose real name was Chris Wallace, was shot to death in a similar attack six months later.

Knight and Dre later had a falling out and Dre left. The record company eventually declared bankruptcy and was auctioned off.

Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, another former N.W.A. member, were at the film location Thursday, but they didn't see Knight, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity. Filming was shut down for the day and not resumed Friday.

The history of Knight's run-ins with the law goes back more than 20 years.

In November, Knight pleaded not guilty to a robbery charge filed after a celebrity photographer accused him of stealing her camera in Beverly Hills. Because of prior convictions, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Despite its racy premise, The Loft is too sloppy to be shocking

Besides being an early contender for the worst date movie of 2015, The Loft is a film that cant decide what it wants. Its a male fantasy, and a cautionary tale. Its sleazy in concept, and timid in execution. It punishes its protagonists for their transgressions, then lets them off the hook. And, perhaps most maddeningly, it insists on painting those protagonists as pretty okay guys, deep down, even as their behavior repeatedly challenges that conclusion. (For some of the characters, anywaydespite The Lofts many attempts at red herrings, the observant viewer could predict the final outcome simply by who gets a humanizing subplot and who doesnt.)

Based on a Belgian thriller, The Loft centers around a group of five 1-percent types who share a loft reserved for entertaining their invariably blonde, thrillingly unstable mistresses, girlfriends, and one-night stands. (The wives, on the other hand, are all brunette, sour-faced buzzkills.) Then a sexy young blonde turns up dead, n***d, and handcuffed to the bed, with a Latin phrase smeared in blood on the headboard. Party over, bro.

The Loft is enamored with hidden agendas, plot twists, expository speeches about those plot twists, and shocking revelations in general. Its also enamored of sleek modern design, and everything from the crash pad itself to a police interrogation room looks like it was shot on the set of an Ikea catalog. If only the movie was as enamored with filling its plot holes. (It features an LAPD whose autopsies apparently do not include toxicology reports, for starters.) Or with dialogue. Everyone makes an unintentionally hilarious statement at some point, although the really leaden ones are reserved for the mistress characters. These lines are all delivered straight, with the exception of those uttered by Modern Familys Eric Stonestreet, who gives an over-the-top performance as lecherous drunk Marty.

Besides privilege, these men reek of duplicity. One moment Marty is telling his friend Vincent (Karl Urban) not to talk to a woman because fat chicks scare the good-looking chicks away, and the next hes devastated because his wife left him for having s*x with that fat chick. One moment Chris (James Marsden) is a lovesick puppy dog who just wants to do right by heartless blonde Anne (Rachael Taylor); the next hes willingly participating in a frame-up. But what makes these characters so unlikable isnt that theyre unethical. Gripping films can and have been made about terrible people. The problem is that these guysand this movieare doing such a terrible job of being terrible.

What Should We Expect From Katy Perry's Super Bowl Halftime Special?

Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Getty

We don't know about you, but we'll be watching the Super Bowl on mute (well, except for the commercials) up until it's time for the Halftime Special. That's when Katy Perry will take the arena stage to do her best career-encompassing performance for an audience of over 100 million people. What will she do? Stick to the typical Katy Perry stuff? Go off-book? Will she focus on singing or dancing? Will she throw shade? Will she sing "Firework"? (That last one, for sure.) We have a slew of educated guesses below.

1. Lenny Kravitz. This isnt an assumption; its reality. It has been confirmed that Lenny will appear during Katy Perrys big show. But what will he do? Will he wail out to the guitar solo on Birthday? (There is no guitar solo on Birthday, but there could be one.) Maybe h**l fill in for Juicy J on Dark Horse with ...

2. Another big surprise guest. You can't have a Super Bowl Halftime Show without one huge surprise: Beyoncreunited the ladies of Destiny's Child; Janet Jackson released her nipple; the existence of Aerosmith. Too bad it won't be a surprise anymore. (If you don't want to know, skip this next part!) Last night, an "anonymous source" spilled the beans: Missy Elliott will join Perry on the Super Bowl stage. That sounds great! But here's an idea that would also shock the nation (and be blogged about for years to come): Invite rumored ex-BFF Taylor Swift up there and sing a song together. (Imagine if it's a "Bad Blood" duet.)We're friends again! Go, friendship! Go, females! Go, Super Bowl! Go, America!

3. Latex, as in Katy will be wearing some. Its quite literally a guarantee that Katy Perry will wear some sort of form-fitting latex or spandex situation, in case you need to convince the football fans youre perhaps watching the Big Game with that they need to pay attention to the halftime show.

4. Cats. Having seen Katy Perrys Prism tour, I can pretty much promise you that her Halftime Spectacular will include some sort of feline. Will it be a bunch of dancers dressed in terrifying cat costumes? (Did we not learn anything from Cats?) Will it be Perry herself with cat ears? Perhaps a trippy floating cat-face la Miley?

5. Balloons: So let me get you in your birthday suit / Its time to bring out the big balloons. Noted.

6. This:

7. Speaking of fireworks, there willdefinitely be fireworks. And the song "Firework." Its the Super Bowl! End with a bang. A very controlled, very inspiring bang.

8. A medley! If you've seen a Super Bowl Halftime Show before, you know these things run on medleys. But what will Perry pick from her vast discography of hits? She's got 12 and a half minutes to work with, so let's say she does the classics: "Teenage Dream," "California Gurls," "Firework," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" as well as the hits off Prism: "This Is How We Do," "Roar," Dark Horse." Will she include the underrated "Birthday"? How about a short interlude tribute to "I Kissed a Girl"? Let's assume she closes with "Firework"; will there be any other unexpected additions?

9.Ferras. "Who?" Ferras. He's the first guy Katy Perry signed to her Metaphorphosis Music label just lastyear. He also went along with her on the Prism tour, appearing mid-show to show off his skills and have Perry gab about his talents. Will he be at the Super Bowl? Likely. Will Perry use her chance at this immense audience to push her artist? Perhaps.

10. Cultural appropriation. Just saying! It wouldn't be the first time.

Katy Perry promises 'wild' Super Bowl halftime, but she won't be fined

Updated JAN 29, 2015 9:10p ET

PHOENIX -- In between the burning questions about her costumes, her hair and the planned choreography of her halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX, pop mega-icon Katy Perry delivered the line of the week when asked if she had her single-girl's eye on a particular player in Sunday's game at University of Phoenix Stadium."I'm just here so I don't get fined," Perry said, channeling the infamous line from Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch at Super Bowl Media Day.Given the gathered crowd and the size of room designated for Perry's press conference on Thursday at the Phoenix Convention Center, you could make a strong argument that the Super Bowl is the sideshow this weekend while Perry is the headline act.

One of the world's biggest music stars has a record 64.1 million followers on Twitter, a Grammy Award, anthemic hits like "Roar" and "Firework" that she will perform on Sunday, and a reported net worth of $130 million. She also promised that "nothing in my performance will be deflated."

"Katy Perry is as big as it gets," said Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was one of many players singing her songs at media day.

Perry spent about 20 minutes discussing her upcoming performance immediately after national anthem singer Idina Menzel fielded questions. Perry was joined at one point on stage by her dog, Butters, and she reminded everyone that she spent her kindergarten and first grade years at Paradise Valley Christian School, so "I feel like this is somewhat of hometown turf," she said. "I feel very comfortable here."

Here's a sampling of her other responses.

On asking Lenny Kravitz to join her on stage: "We've worked up something incredibly soulful. Of course he brings his soul and I think he's going to make the night even sexier -- just the appropriate sexiness, everyone. Family fun."

On what viewers can expect: "I think I'm the only person in Super Bowl halftime history that will bring both a lion and sharks to the show. It's going to be wild out there."

On who she's rooting for: "I love the Seahawks because of (friend and QB) Russell (Wilson) so I think that I'm going to probably go for them."

On potential costumes (maybe channeling Katniss Everdeen): "If I have 12 1/2 minutes I'm going to take the opportunity to show off a few looks. I know there are some bets going on out there, so I won't ruin the surprise. I don't believe in gambling, but this is exciting. I've never been bet on as far as what my hair color is going to be.

"All I'll say about my opening costume is that it's going to be flaming hot."

On surprise guests: "I thought long and hard about it. I wanted to kind of bring someone back, a throwback of sorts that definitely needed some more shine. All I can say is it will be a real female fun night. When this person enters the stage and when you hear the first ring of the cord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt."

On the show: "I'm not bringing any elements from my tour, which is such a visual feast in and of itself. I made a whole different show for this particular halftime show. We've spent many months curating such a wonderful show."

On concerns over wardrobe malfunctions (a la Janet Jackson): "I'm not self-sabotaging by nature. If there is news about my performance, I want for all of it to be about the music and female empowerment and that everybody just had a great time."I can only control myself. I've done plenty of fittings. I'm working with my costumes on the field already. Like I said, my motivation and my objective here is for people to be talking about the music the next day. I hold a lot of pride in the music, and I wouldn't want anything to (deter) from that."

Oakland Raiders' Menelik Watson Donates Paycheck to 4-Year-Old Girl Battling ...

The Oakland Raiders may have a losing record, but what they did this past week makes them one of the biggest winners of the season in our book.

Ava Urrea is an adorable 4-year-old girl battling a rare heart condition. She was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and an absolutely amazing smile. And yesterday, she did nothing but show off that smile by spending the day with the Oakland Raiders.

Through Jay Glazer's Touchdown Dreams program, Ava, who has undergone more than 14 procedures for her condition, was named Raiders team captain for the day on Sunday and received an autographed helmet and footballs from the team. And as you can tell by the photos, the Raiders players were absolutely smitten with her.

But one player went above and beyond for Ava. As the family was eating lunch in the team meal room, second-year offensive tackle Menelik Watson surprised Ava and her family by donating one of his game-day paychecks to them, which amounted to over $36,000.

"[The Raiders] went so far above and beyond. But there's one playerand I've never heard a player do this before, named Menelik Watson. He walks over to Ava's father the other day and hands him his game check for the week. And he said, 'Sir, I would like to make sure Ava has the greatest holiday. Here is my game check,'" Glazer recounts. "All the bad things that we hear players do and all the negative publicity they getthere is so much good that these guys actually do."

And maybe it was because of Ava and all the high-fives she gave the team, but the Raiders upset the Buffalo Bills 26-24 with their little fan cheering from the sideline.

De Blasio was in the dark about Cuomo order to close subway

Mayor de Blasio wasnt chill on Tuesday about being frozen out of Gov. Cuomos decision to shutter the subway as their frosty relationship showed no sign of thawing.

It was just the latest instance of the governor acting without input from City Hall.

De Blasio, who aides said was told only about 30 minutes before Cuomo went public with the subway shutdown announcement, said it was a big decision that he shouldve been consulted on.

I think it was a very big move and certainly something we would have liked to have had some more dialogue on, de Blasio told reporters.

De Blasios office said the mayor found out about Cuomos decision the first time in the subways 111-year history in which it was shut down for snow around 4:30 p.m. Monday when an MTA official called City Hall with a storm update.

That call was roughly 30 minutes before Cuomo went on TV to tell the rest of the city.

A spokeswoman for Cuomo said the governor was in constant communication with the mayor starting on Sunday, and that closing the system had always been an option. But as late as Monday at noon, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast told reporters he didnt think completely closing the subways would be necessary for the storm.

The final decision to shut the subway was made after a 4 p.m. weather report and based on the advice that Prendergast gave Cuomo, said Melissa DeRosa, the governors communications director.

We understand that a 4:45 p.m. announcement of a closing at 11 p.m. is relatively short notice but we wanted to get the best, most timely information before we made the decision and the public clearly got the message, said DeRosa, his chief spokeswoman.

Its not the first time Cuomo has surprised the mayor with a major announcement on short notice.

During the Ebola crisis, de Blasio wasnt consulted about Cuomos decision to enact a 21-day quarantine policy, which he announced in a joint presser with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

In another curious move amid the snowstorm, the mayor and the governor while repeatedly stressing that their offices were in close contact held dueling media availabilities early Tuesday morning to discuss the storm.

Cuomo spoke at a briefing with top officials at 8 a.m., around the same time de Blasio appeared on CNN.

And on Monday, they scheduled their separate storm press conferences just a few miles apart within 15 minutes of one another, which wouldve made it impossible for TV crews to shoot both live.

Cuomo ended up moving his presser time up. He downplayed the dueling briefings as a scheduling snafu.

I talk to the mayor all the time, so were totally coordinated, Cuomo said Monday.

For his part, de Blasio insisted he wasnt upset about the late notice of the subway shutdown, saying the runup to the storm required quick decision-making.

All the meteorologists were (saying) 2 feet or even more, and very fast accumulation, he said.

So I think in that atmosphere everyone was trying to make quick decisions, and the right decision.

And he stressed that despite not being part of the final decision-making process he and the governor were mostly in sync with how to handle the storm.

The decision to focus on safety and take more precautions rather than fewer was the right one...and the governors team and I were very united in that broad philosophy, he said.

Cuomos decision to close the subways during the storm which ended up being far less powerful than initially predicted ruffled more than just de Blasios feathers.

Some transit advocates questioned the wisdom of completely closing the system, and the head of the pro-rider advocacy group the Straphangers Campaign called for an independent body to review the decision.

I grew up in New York. The subways never closed for snow, said Gene Russianoff.

Closing the subway, you inconvenience millions of people, and hurt the citys economy, he said.

He said he didnt want to Tuesday morning quarterback, but someone should take an independent look, similar to the type of probes that are done after derailments or other types of accidents.

Others defended the governors choice.

The executive director of the General Contractors Association whose members work on many MTA projects said it was a tough choice that had to be made, and could have saved the system from serious damage if the storm hadnt shifted directions.

By giving plenty of notice, people were able to plan their day and were able to get out safely, said Denise Richardson.

The worst thing in these instances is for people to act as if things are business as usual and then find themselves stranded by conditions.

Cuomo, at an early morning press conference, also defended his decision to put the city that never sleeps on lockdown.

Weve had people die in storms .<TH>.<TH>.<TH>Id much rather be in situations where we say, We got lucky,<TH> said Cuomo.

Service was brought back around 8 a.m., but didnt get fully operational until around noon and even then, it was only on a limited-service schedule.

It is expected to go back to a weekday schedule on Wednesday.

Officials with the Transport Workers United Local 100 which represents subway workers said that it couldve been brought up faster if the MTA had planned the shutdown better.

Because the move was made so quickly, the MTA did not ask many workers on their Monday evening and night shifts to sleep in crew rooms, which would allow them to be on hand for a quick turnaround on Tuesday, union officials charge.

Some individual supervisors asked workers on their own but many did not.

They didnt hold onto people physically and I think they got caught short in some areas because of that, Steve Downs, a division chairman with TWU Local 100, said.

TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen said the union offered to secure volunteers from the ranks of train operators and conductors to stay overnight Monday at key locations but the management wasnt interested.

PS4 Bundle With Dying Light and The Last of Us Discounted to $430

@leviathanwing@kane6911 It's a good deal and there are obvious savings but Kane is right to a degree. People see $429.99 and it's off putting in a sense, if they just listed the console with nothing for say $374.99 it would move a lot more units and look more appealing.

The illusion of saving is stringent on the price decreasing, not increasing. People don't see the games when they look at a bundle like this, they see "I'm paying $429.99 for a PlayStation 4", that's what this translates to for most people.

That is where Microsoft is getting it right, included games aside they are offering the cost of the system itself for $50 less than it normally costs, from $399.99 to $349.99. People see that and instantly it resonates, they're getting their system for $50 cheaper. Then you include the fact that it comes with two games on top of that and it's just a home run, it's a huge bang for your buck.

Even though the PlayStation 4 includes two games you still have to spend more money on it, not less, defeating the purpose of savings. With Microsoft and the Xbox One you're spending less completely reinforcing their pitch and the value of what they have to offer.

I think that is what he was trying to say.

Hands-On: The Ups And Downs Of Dying Light

Techland's latest take on the zombie apocalypse is finally here, and Dead Island fans have been eagerly waiting to see if the developer's newest open-world offering can improve upon the flaws of its predecessors. We've only just begun to sink our teeth into Dying Light's meaty campaign, so you'll have to wait a few more days for our official review. In the meantime, here's what I've enjoyed so far (and what I haven't), based on my five-or-so hours with the PS4 version.

A Beautiful WastelandTechland ditched the last-gen versions of Dying Light because it felt the old consoles weren't up to snuff, and the decision seems to have paid off. The city of Harran looks great (in that h**l-on-Earth-viral-outbreak kind of way), zombies are appropriately grotesque, and the lighting system sells the dynamic transition from day to night. Trees and buildings in the far-off distance can be an eyesore, but you'll likely be too focused on the snarling corpse snapping in your face to notice.

A Slow StartDon't expect to jump right into the zombie-slaying mayhem when you start up Dying Light. After an action-packed cutscene of you parachuting into the undead-infested city, you're promptly ushered into an extended series of tutorial missions in a zombie-free apartment building. These do a good job of introducing you to the characters, gameplay mechanics, and RPG systems of the game, but you'll be itching to get into the city by the time your first real mission pops up.

Freerunning Through The ApocalypseWhen it came to navigating the lush, tropical locations of Dead Island, survivors were scarcely more agile than their undead enemies. I was skeptical that Techland could pull off Mirror's Edge-style parkour mechanics, and while I'm still not completely sold, the traversal system has worked well so far. You can run, jump, and slide your way around the environment (and your enemies) without having to catch your breath every 10 seconds, and visual clues make it easy to tell what you can climb and where you can safely fall (most of the time anyway). I've had my fair share of flubbed jumps and climbing fails, but you still have a lot more freedom of movement than in most first-person games, which is vital for a world where you spend more time avoiding enemies than you do confronting them.

On A MissionHarran offers players a great big sandbox teeming with deadly brain-munchers. While exploring the city has been compelling, the handful of campaign missions I've completed beyond the opening tutorial have been of the errand-boy variety. Whether I'm arming traps, activating radio towers, or retrieving medicine, all of the missions have entailed little more than going to a location and pressing a button. I'm hoping missions will become more involved as the game progresses, and offer some interesting twists on Dying Light's underlying systems.

Cringe-Inducing CombatDead Island really sold its visceral, melee-focused combat, and Dying Light only offers improvements to returning fans. Deadly blows are now highlighted by slow-motion and X-ray effects, and physics play a larger role in the action dropkicking a shambling corpse into a wall of spikes is as morbidly satisfying as you'd expect it to be. Techland has also introduced several enemy types in the first few hours of play, which require different strategies to take down (though my patented run-away-from-everything-that-moves technique has proven universally successful so far).

Coming Up Next: Find out about weapon durability, the story, and things that go bump in the night...

The FANTASTIC FOUR Trailer: Our First Reactions

Fantastic Four movie posterCREDIT: 20th Century Fox

So its finally here the first teaser trailer for 20th Century Foxs Fantastic Four reboot , and judging by the response, curiosity is very high.

Given the up-until-now secretive nature of imagery and information about Josh Tranks film, early fans, early critics and impartial observers alike are getting a rare, true first impression of the film in a way thats unusual for the superhero genre. So with that in mind we asked some of Newsaramas writers and friends to write a short review of their initial reaction. And here are the results:

##

This may come from a place of diminished expectations, but watching the new Fantastic Four trailer, I have to say Im pleasantly surprised. That said, this may have to do with just how much mood the trailer set up, and how little the trailer actually showed. Fox is continuing the quick montage trend of most superhero movies, which bombards us with images but gives us next to no context. We get our best glimpses of Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch, and Miles Teller as Reed Richards, but theres very little showing what this story is actually about, either in terms of plot or themes. Yet perhaps because this film has already been so maligned by the fan base, I couldnt help but enjoy the spectacle I certainly liked this trailer more than Ant-Mans, thats for sure.

Right now, this trailer sort of gives us what I think a lot of people were expecting early on in the production of this film, before rampant internet speculation soured many fans opinions Jordan still sells this movie as best he can, working on his car in a tank top, and scoring the best moment of the trailer as he bursts into flame. Sue and Ben, however, get very short shrift, and if you think Teller is too insufferable to cast as the brainy Reed Richards, well, this trailer wont dissuade you, at least. While the sweeping musical score and menacing voiceover adds plenty of drama to the trailer, the substance behind Fantastic Four how they came to be, what theyre up against is a secret that will have to be revealed another day. By all rights, I shouldnt like the Fantastic Four trailer as much as I do. My Fantastic is the mid-period Stan Lee and Jack Kirby team, the one thats practically pop-art on the page: colorful, upbeat and with those chunky Joe Sinnott inks. The Ultimate Fantastic Four book, which is clearly an inspiration to the movie, left me cold but theres something about this teaser that totally rings true for me.

A large part of it is that I recently re-read the first Lee and Kirby issues, and theyre scary; theyre about body horror and transformation and the unknown in a way that this trailer feels very faithful to; its not the Fantastic Four, the ones in the comic book thats been around for 50 years, sure, but its certainly something thats recognizable as Kirby and Lees original intent.

Beyond that, theres the fact that it just looks like a good science-fiction movie the visuals are impressive, Miles Tellers Reed Richards looks charmingly nerdy, and theres a lack of the And heres the super villain they must face! formula that weve seen in Marvel and X-Men trailers recently. It looks like something different, and in many ways, that feels as faithful to what Lee and Kirby were trying to do originally as much as anything else. One of the first things about the trailer that called to my inner geek is the narration and its focus on the fear of our own scientific ability. That theme is at the heart of the Fantastic Four's origin, and to hear it recognized right up front in this movie trailer is promising. The film looks like a nod toward the Ultimate version of Fantastic Four, and the filmmakers are going the route of inter-dimensional travel, like the Ultimate books did. That's fine, and it makes sense in today's "we've-seen-space-and-it's-not-so-scary" mindset, but I didn't see a lot in this trailer that makes me think the other dimension is going to be particularly interesting. Lots of dramatic music, but very little in the way of threat.

As a particular fan of Sue Storm, I did wonder how she'd be portrayed. The brief shot of her working some computer magic has the feel of War Games to me and it shows how far we've come in the depiction of women since that movie: Instead of the clueless character played by Ally Sheedy playing off Matthew Broderick's geeky guy, this movie is advertising a (hopefully) brilliant Sue Storm to work with the geeky Reed Richards.

On the bad side we've been told that these actors were chosen because they could act, but they don't actually say anything in the trailer, which is a little concerning. And I miss the blue. The Fantastic Four wears blue. Right? But on the good side, Reed doing experiments in his garage as a kid is all kinds of awesome, and the movie feels like it has a youthful appeal that I think will work well with this superhero team.

Beyond that, my quick impressions are that the special effects look pretty good, but too brief to really reach any conclusions. (I'm not even sure I want to guess what that split-second of Thing-type rocks means.) And although we've been burnt with former Fantastic Four movies, this version has enough promise for me to shift into wait-and-see-more-before-I-judge mode. Vaneta Rogers, Newsarama contributor

Having recently watched/reviewed as many Fantastic Four adaptations as possible, I can say this is a very good trailer for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar.

Anyone see Miles Teller in Whiplash? It's so good. Zack Smith, Newsarama contributor

Take the last few seconds off this teaser trailer and could you even tell that this movie was an adaption of a sixty-plus year old comic book? It was a very interesting and ultimately very smart way to approach a movie that is loaded with more negative baggage than just about any other comic book property being made into films today.

Watch it again and imagine that you havent lived your whole lives knowing at least the most general concepts behind The Fantastic Four, what do you see? Classic capital-S-with-an-exclamation-point science imagery and a sage-like monologue about the glory of human endeavor. Words and pictures like these have stirred audiences interest as far back as The Right Stuff and right up to todays films like Interstellar. So when the giant rock-man appears in silhouette at the end and the name of the movie flashes on screen you see that sixty year-old concept and think ok, lets do this!

Now think of this same trailer, but drop in some of the names and visuals you expected to see. Johnny Storm yells Flame On! Thing goes Its Clobberin Time! Doctor Doom talks about himself in the third person, Mr. Fantastic stretches himself into the form of a slingshot. The trailer is not about a new world and human achievement, its an effect showcase. Some small detail ends up dominating the conversation and a movie with already low expectations stays that way.

20th Century Fox did themselves a lot of favors today. The outlook for this movie has completely changed. - Seth Robison, contributor

As a Fantastic Four purist, it's difficult to separate my love of the trappings of Lee and Kirby's genre-defining hundred-issue run from the requirements of modern cinema. Going into this first teaser for Trank's new film, I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the hopeful, bright, sci-fi bonanza of the world's greatest comic magazine. And while I was disappointed by just how dark everything looks, the themes of exploration and discovery are pervasive in the clip.

Rather than feeling like the embattled production recent muckraking has painted it as, Trank's Fantastic Four comes through this clip looking less like a scuttled superhero piece, and more like a major sci-fi blockbuster - signs that bode well for his vision. Ignoring comparisons to other films in the genre, and foregoing what this teaser doesn't show - namely Doom - what it does deliver is, to even a dyed-in-the-wool naysayer such as myself, encouraging.

It's tough to go whole hog supporting a movie you know won't deliver the experience you dream about, but my impression of Trank's Fantastic Four has improved measurably with this glimpse, showing that he, at least, has a strong handle on the film's sci-fi roots while eschewing the silliness of previous movie attempts. Whether Trank can capture the heart and soul of the FF in its family dynamic, and avoid the pitfalls of going too dark and dreary remains to be seen. But for what it does provide, this first Fantastic Four teaser is a winner. George Marston, Newsarama contributor

There's not much action in the Fantastic Four trailer, but there is a keen understanding of the characters, and the personality traits that drive the narratives of the comics. The previous Fantastic Four movies went for a sense of goofball, family fun, not too different from the way Mark Waid wrote the comic back in the early 2000's. I give the trailer for the new project props for highlighting two emotional tones Jonathan Hickman's played up in later Fantastic Four comics: a sense of wonder in the face of scientific discovery and the horror of not knowing what you may find at the other end of that portal to a new world.

Trailers tend to be schlocky exercises in comedy beats, shrilly drama, or CGI action, but here you get a ballooning sense of dread for the future Richards family. The narrator's voice says "consequences" when you see Johnny flame on, it mentions "sacrifice" when you see Ben Grimm as the Thing. In subtle ways, the trailer is hitting on the character traits that add humanity to these heroes. And to me, that's the best way to translate a comic from the page to the screen. - Kenneth Butler, Laptop Magazine & Tom's Guide web producer, Newsarama contributor

##

Love how the Fantastic Four trailer highlights Kate Mara and Michael B. Jordan's dialogue and personalities. Oh wait. - Draven Katayama, Best Shots reviewer

##

That trailer is definitely something new, unexplored. Treating it like hard sci-fi instead of a toy commercial. It's a new conceived notion of what a superhero movie could be. They're explorers, breaking their teeth and becoming a team. The whole thing looked somber, but Fantastic Four is at its core a tragic accident and how these characters come out of it as it builds character and are united. The score is interesting, too. Again, more quiet and epic than the usual superhero flare. It takes some notes from Ultimate Fantastic Four it looks like with a younger cast, but we've known that.

Having Reg Cathey's narration is a good example of what to expect and I thought fit the new direction. We really didn't see who these characters are though, but just giving an idea of the visuals. It's treated as a teaser, and I'm perfectly fine with being teased I want to see more. - Lan Pitts, Best Shots reviewer, Newsarama Contributor

##

Hopefully I won't be the only one watching this trailer and at the end going, "Huh." From the trailer, it looks like Fantastic Four will be a movie with cosmic-sized consequences and it seems like these characters are going to be left to the wayside as the plot tries to be as grand as possible. Despite the great visuals and special effects the silhouette of the Thing actually looks great this trailer doesn't make me feel like this is a Fantastic Four movie yet.

These characters on screen might have the names and abilities of the comic book versions of the Fantastic Four, but the trailer makes it seem doubtful there'll be any further similarities. And maybe that's not such a bad thing if the story ends up being well-written and character driven. Overall, this trailer ends feeling ambivalent and indicating any faults we'll find with the movie will be on the writers and director Josh Trank alone. - Michael Moccio, Best Shots reviewer

##

The blizzard may have proven anticlimactic, but the new Fantastic Four trailer has far exceeded my expectations. That said, its super dark. Way darker than I thought itd be. Im not sure if I can take it completely serious yet.

Still, I was expecting it to be a hilarious train wreck. I still have no idea if it'll be even halfway decent but the tone, at least, is a lot more interesting than the strange humor of the first films. As one of my friends said, it could've been a lot worse: when Reed asked what was coming, that voice could have answered, "Doom." Ugh. Also, Ben doesn't look like an orange Rice Krispie treat anymore, so that's nice. - Marlene Bonnelly, Best Shots reviewer

##

Just off the top, I am still rooting for this movie. Josh Trank's second foray into the superhero genre has had a real rough go of it since pre-production and the fan reactions to everything that has leaked so far has been less than great. All that aside, I still find myself excited for it because its the Fantastic Four, and nothing could be worse than the first two, right?

So this trailer is very moody and sullen at times, and it holds its cards very close to its chest in regards to showing off the Four's powers, but the thing that really struck me is the feeling that this is going to be more hard science fiction than anything else, and that should get the rest of you excited as well. Before the Four were full-fledged superheroes, they were explorers, flinging themselves into the void for the sake of discovery. Jonathan Hickman used this harder sci-fi edge to great effect in his run with the "First Family of Comics," and I think the movie could as well.

Sure, we only get one good shot of the Thing and Johnny finally lighting up, but who care? A teaser teases and this definitely evoked a few good feelings in me as I watched it. I am still in this movie's corner, despite the fact that the larger comic community isn't... yet... - Justin Partridge, III, Best Shots reviewer

Model behaviour? Big Apple snow bust blamed on weather model

In the ongoing weather model "battle" between the Americans and the Europeans, we may have come out on top for this week's blizzard... but meteorologists still went across the pond to get the forecast for New York City and environs.

New York City, much of New Jersey and Philadelphia got much less snow Tuesday than the National Weather Service had predicted. New York City officially received 7.8 inches at Central Park, quite a bit less than the 24-36 inches that the weather service forecast.

"The GFS (American) model did better on this storm than the European model," said National Weather Service director Louis Uccellini, based on his early reading of e-mail traffic among meteorologists. The GFS (Global Forecast System) model is the main American model, which was recently upgraded.

The European model said the storm would be about 100 miles farther west than it actually was, which unfortunately is what the weather service went with in their prediction for New York City. The official name for the European model is the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

A few other models, including the GFS, the North American Model (NAM) and others said the worst of the snow would miss the city.

Predicting 30 inches for New York City, based on that one model, was "outlandish," tweeted private meteorologist Ryan Maue of Weather Bell Analytics.

"When one model is going gangubsters for NYC, but GFS, NAM ...and others suggest much less, don't go with worst-case," Weather Channel meteorologist Michael Palmer tweeted.

It should be noted that ALL of the models -- including the ECMWF -- were calling for a huge blizzard in New England, and that certainly verified.

The Weather Channel was one of the few media outlets late Monday that predicted a smaller total for the Big Apple: Roughly a foot. "Bottom line: this was a historic snowstorm and blizzard for parts of New England, as the Weather Channel predicted spot on. Never buy into just one model," tweeted Palmer.

One of the European model's shining moments was in 2012, when it correctly predicted the path of Hurricane Sandy well before the GFS came on board.

Uccellini, in a conference call Tuesday afternoon, said meteorologists need to improve how they present forecast uncertainty: "We need to make the uncertainties clear," he admitted.

The preparations in New York City from decision makers -- which were based on weather service predictions for the storm -- were "the right decision," Uccellini said, noting there were far fewer storm-related deaths, traffic accidents, and traffic jams than in previous snowstorms. "It's best to plan for the worst and hope for the best," he said.

"People in areas where the snowfall was less than forecast woke up this morning to find the streets and sidewalks plowed, and their cities reopening; in effect, yesterday's decisions helped these cities recover faster than they otherwise would have," he said.

Andy Dalton got booed off the Pro Bowl field

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has turned into something of a national punching bag for his repeated struggles not just in the postseason, but in nationally televised games of any kind. And, to a large degree, deservedly so, as Daltonhas gone one-and-done in the playoffs all four years of his career (with one touchdown against six interceptions, and a 57.8 rating), and he was absolutely roasted for a Thursday-night debacle in November.

So its safe to say that Daltons reputation preceded him to Glendale, Ariz., site of Sundays Pro Bowl. Add in the Arizona crowdsapparent interest in letting a number of targets hear its displeasure, unusual for the normallylaid-back all-star game, and perhaps its not surprising that the quarterbacks desultory performance got him booed off the field.

Dalton completed 9 of 20 passes for 69 yards and zero touchdowns or interceptions. In contrast, the other five quarterbacks in the game (Andrew Luck, Tony Romo,Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan) all performed much better, combining to complete 52 of 78 passes for 745 yards, eight touchdowns and two picks.

What probably pushed the University of Phoenix Stadium crowd past its limits of good will was Daltons performance in his teams final drive, in which it trailed, 32-28, with just over three minutes left. The quarterback drove Team Carter to the 19-yard line, mostly by either handing the ball off, or throwing short passes, to running backs Alfred Morris and Justin Forsett.

Once at the 19, with over a minute left, Dalton was able to well, do nothing. He attempted four passes, including two more to Morris and one to regular-season security blanket A.J. Green, and all four missed their marks, the final one by a laughably large margin.

Dalton failed to pull-out the last-minute victory, and at least some in the crowd let him know that they werent happy he came up short in the drama department.

Now, in fairness to Dalton, he wasnt supposed to have been anywhere nearthe Pro Bowl. He was originally named the seventhalternate (although even that was arguably too lofty of an honor), but so many other quarterbacks dropped out of the game that he eventually floated to the top of the list.

Also, Dalton played well in his only other Pro Bowl appearance, in 2012, when he completed seven of nine passes for 99 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. In addition, as mentioned, he was playing in front of a bunch of folks who seemed unusually predisposed to negativity:

Okay, that makes some sense, considering that many in attendance would have been Cardinals fans, with little love for the division-rival Seahawks and absolutely none for the mouthy cornerback. But booing mascots and the national anthem singer, that just seems flat-out surly.

This former editor and part-time writer at The Post is now happy to prove that if you combine 'blowhard' and 'blaggard,' you get 'blogger.' He previously had used 'Desmond Bieler' as his byline, but feels that shortening the first name to 'Des' nicely conveys his ever-decreasing gravitas. He also covers Fantasy Football.

Sam Smith to pay Tom Petty royalties on 'Stay With Me'

By Brian Mansfield, USA TODAY 12:56 p.m. EST January 26, 2015

Sam Smith, shown in Los Angeles in December, has come to an agreement regarding "Stay With Me."(Photo: Kevin Mazur, WireImage)

Sam Smith will be sharing his songwriting royalties for "Stay With Me" with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

Shortly after the British singer's single came out last April, sharp-eared listeners noticed a similarity between "Stay With Me" and Petty's 1989 hit "I Won't Back Down," which he wrote with Lynne.

They weren't the only ones. A representative for Smith says he and two other "Stay With Me" writers, James Napier and William Phillips, "came to an immediate and amicable agreement" with Petty and Lynne and now list them as co-writers of the song.

The claim was settled in October, according to British newspaper The Sun, with Petty and Lynne splitting a 25% share of songwriting royalties of Smith's song, which is nominated for song of the year at the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards.

Smith's representative says, via a statement, that the singer wasn't familiar with "I Won't Back Down" when he wrote "Stay With Me" but acknowledged a coincidental likeness when he heard the Petty/Lynne song.

Michael Harrington, a professional musicologist who specializes in federal copyright matters, also heard the similarity when a friend played him Smith's record several months ago. "It got to the chorus, and I just started smiling," Harrington says. "I said, 'Oh, yeah, that's "I Won't Back Down." ' That's pretty close, just the slightest differences. Especially compared to what's in court these days, this one is really solid."

According to Harrington, the two songs have a sequence of almost identical phrases in Smith's chorus and Petty's verses that made a successful claim of copyright infringement likely.

"If you took just the first phrase of the Tom Petty and Sam Smith and compared them, I would say, 'So what? I can find that in all sorts of music from Cream, Robert Johnson, Debussy,' " says Harrington, who has presented the two songs when discussing infringement in classes at Harvard Law School, Berklee College of Music and SAE Nashville, where he is a faculty chairman. "The fact that it keeps going and going: there are several phrases, and the rhythms are the same or extremely close to being the same. At some point, the similarity goes on too long."

The full statement from Smith's representative reads as follows: "Recently the publishers for the song 'I Won't Back Down,' written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, contacted the publishers for 'Stay With Me,' written by Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips, about similarities heard in the melodies of the choruses of the two compositions. Not previously familiar with the 1989 Petty/Lynne song, the writers of 'Stay With Me' listened to 'I Won't Back Down' and acknowledged the similarity. Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers of 'Stay With Me' along with Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips."

Here are the two songs in question. Judge their similarities for yourself.

'Birdman' takes big prize, diversity big moment at SAG Awards

Story highlights
  • Viola Davis' speech, "Orange" showcase TV diversity at SAG Awards
  • "Birdman" wins big prize for films

On the TV side, the winners included "Orange Is the New Black" -- a series about a women's prison, created by a woman, featuring a cast that includes a transgender performer -- and black actresses Viola Davis and Uzo Aduba.

And the movie winners included Patricia Arquette, who won for a performance in "Boyhood" that she filmed over 12 years -- and wasn't afraid to show it.

Arquette comes from a long line of performers. Her siblings, including Rosanna Arquette and David Arquette, are actors. So was her father and grandfather. She paid tribute to all of them in her speech.

"I'm a fourth-generation actor," she said, visibly overwrought, adding that her family has been performing for more than a century.

But it was the wins by Davis, Aduba and "Orange" that caught the attention of social media, which erupted 10 days ago when the Oscar nominations put forth a very un-diverse crowd.

Complete list of winners

Davis' speech, in particular, was particularly moving.

After beginning with an observation about how she tells her daughter stories, she paid tribute to the producers who thought of her for their "How to Get Away with Murder" story.

"I'd like to thank Paul Lee, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Pete Nowalk for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark-skinned African-American woman who looks like me," she said.

Several tweeters highlighted her words and their significance.

In general, however, the SAG Awards were a relatively quiet and brisk affair. (Yes, it can happen, even for Hollywood awards shows.)

The film awards generally went as expected, with Arquette, J.K. Simmons ("Whiplash"), Julianne Moore ("Still Alice"), Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything") and "Birdman" taking home the trophies. Only Redmayne was a mild surprise, given that "Birdman's" Michael Keaton has been considered the leader in the best actor race by a number of handicappers.

The actors' branch is the largest bloc of Oscar voters, so the SAG Awards are closely watched for indicators about which way the Academy Award wind is blowing.

Still, the SAG Awards had their moments. There were Davis' and Aduba's emotional speeches, of course. And there were also a few laughs.

Frances McDormand got some chuckles for turning her speech into a cheeky bit of promotion for her film, "Olive Kitteredge" ("You can stream it -- I don't know how. You can watch it on an intercontinental flight, I've been told. You can get the DVDs on February 9, give it to someone as a Valentine's Day present!" she said) and the witty Carrie Fisher got off a couple jokes while introducing her mother, Debbie Reynolds, who won a lifetime achievement award.

"Birdman" took home only one prize in the end, but it was the biggest one of the night. It also won at the Producers' Guild Awards Saturday.

How that will fly at the Oscars, however, is anyone's guess.

Debbie Reynolds Wins the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award

Hollywood veteran Debbie Reynolds was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.

In her career, which began in the 1950s, the 82-year-old Reynolds has been nominated for one Oscar, five Golden Globes and one Emmy. Her big break came when she starred alongside Gene Kelly in the 1952 classic Singin in the Rain, says People.

G*d gave us talent, so were very fortunate, she said. My favorite movie was The Unsinkable Molly Brown In that film, I got to sing a wonderful song called I Aint Down Yet. Well, I aint. Thank you all so much for this wonderful award.

Reynolds award was presented by her daughter, Carrie Fisher, famous for her iconic portrayal of Princess Leia in Star Wars.

The SAG gives the award every year to an actor or actress who represents the finest ideals of the acting profession. Last years SAG Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Rita Moreno, who also played a part in Singin in the Rain.

Listen to Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney Team Up on ...

TIME Entertainment Music Listen to Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney Team Up on FourFiveSeconds Roc Nation Rihanna and Kanye West trade vocal duties, with Macca on acoustic guitar, on a surprisingly breezy new track

At the iHeartRadio Summit on Jan. 21, Kanye West played an audience of mostly industry people a new duet with Rihanna and Paul McCartney the latter of whom we heard collaborate with him on New Years Eve on the introspective Only One. The new duet, titled FourFiveSeconds, has now premiered online for everyone who isnt a radio programmer.

Earlier, a spokesperson for West called his teaming with McCartney a prolific musical collaboration, and its easy to hear his influence on the acoustic guitar and organ-driven track. Kanye continues this years streak of entirely-sung work and Rihanna sounds as relaxed, even folksy, as shes sounded in years on her sunny, harmonized chorus.

According to Ty Dolla $ign, who spoke to Billboard and said he contributed to the duet, a video was also shot and coming soon. Ty Dolla $ign said the track was planned for Wests upcoming album, but Rihanna posted it herself, calling it the FIRST GLIMPSE AT MY NEW MUSIC, making it unclear whose song it is, exactly.

FourFiveSeconds is out on iTunes; listen below.

With Historic Blizzard About to Bury Northeast, Weather Channel Takes Day Off...

When it comes to exactly why the Weather Channel exists, know this: It doesnt for a benign sunny day in June or a crisp autumn evening. It isnt on your dial because of April showers or May flowers or for a few flurries Christmas night.

The Weather Channel exists for whatever that ominous blob is Im seeing on my phone right now. Said bloba huge noreasteris being described this way on my Weather Channel app via the following headline:

Winter Storm Juno: Blizzard Warnings for New York City, Boston, Parts of 7 States for Potentially Historic Northeast SnowstormYikes! Needless to say, my afternoon has consisted of filling the Honda generator with gas, cleaning out the cooler and bringing in ample wood for the fireplace in case we lose power here in Jersey. I also headed over to the local ShopRite to stock up on food, and lets just say fear is in the air (30-minute wait despite 15 registers open). In the old single days living in Hoboken, storms like this meant heading to the closest bar (with a generator), getting overserved and laughing off the storm. Married with wife and baby me, however, needs to prepare the fort instead. Good times!

Part of that preparation includes turning on The Weather Channel and watching for the next 72 hours straight regardless of repetition. Theres something about a huge stormparticularly those carrying the white stuffthat makes watching TWC must-see-TV in these situations. For whatever reason, the whole event, particularly the anticipation leading up to it, feels more important, a bigger deal.

So excuse me for a moment as I ask the following question to Weather Channel President David Clark and defacto President Jim Cantore: What the h**l are you guys doing over there? Because when I turned on the Weather Channel late this morning after seeing the aforementioned ominous headline aboveyou knowthe one about a Potentially Historic Northeast BlizzardI kinda expected to not see taped programming aboutplane crashes. And as of 5:00 PM, it still all about planes and not low pressure systems. Seriouslyis anyone outside of a tape operator working today? How can you not be live right now? I know the storm isnt coming until tomorrowbut you cant write the following on your website and not have like-live-programming to accompany it (bold is included in the original advisory):

Now is the time to prepare and make sure you have the supplies you need for this potentially historic winter storm. Do not proceed with any travel plans in the affected areas late Monday and Tuesday or you could put yourself in great danger.

UhOK. Can you maybeI dont knowcall a production crew and anchor in to expand on this on television a bit further? Because if I ran a network whose existence, its ratings, its entire mantra is based on preparing for storms like this, Id probably be on a phone right now. To that end, heres what Mr. Cantore said during a dispute with DirecTV last year:

I feel its just irresponsible for DIRECTV to drop The Weather Channel and deny their viewers access to critical and potentially life-saving information in times of severe weather. I think its a dangerous gamble to put lives at risk for a penny.

That dispute was settled (TWC got less than that penny) but Cantore and the network havent learned its lesson. Its ratings continue to drop because it thinks running taped programming leading up to historic weather events is somehow a good idea. MSNBC apparently thinks the same thing, as it is offering up Caught on Camera (tape), while Fox and CNN are providing regular updates on the storm.

A missed opportunity for ratings. A missed opportunity to grab some viewers to help save a sinking ship. The Weather Channel website is telling us to prepare for the next storm of the century.

The Weather Channel itself? Apparently saving its resources for a rainy day.

UPDATE 7:19pm: The Weather Channel is now broadcasting live with coverage of the blizzard starting at 7:00 PMafter being in tape for seven hours with Why Planes Crash.

Attorney: Cubs great Ernie Banks died of heart attack

CHICAGO (AP) Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks died after a heart attack, an attorney representing the Hall of Famer's family said Sunday.

With Banks' widow standing nearby at a news conference at a downtown hotel, Mark Bogen said Banks had the heart attack Friday in Chicago and died later that day. He did not provide any other details.

"I want you to know that he was very beloved and he is going to be dearly missed by family, friends and all his fans," Liz Banks said.

The Cubs and Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office announced that the statue of Banks that has stood outside Wrigley Field since 2008 will be placed in Chicago's Daley Plaza this week, remaining there from Wednesday morning through Saturday. The statute has long been a popular spot for fans to take photographs and after Banks' death many went to the ballpark to put flowers near it only to discover that the statute had been removed recently during the Wrigley field renovation project.

In news release, Emanuel and Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said placing the statue at Daley Plaza was a fitting way to allow fans to pay their respects.

"We are bringing the statue to Daley Plaza to honor not just one of the best ballplayers of all time, but a great man who made our city proud from the day we first met him in 1953" when Banks broke into the major leagues, the mayor said.

Bogen said the family is still planning a funeral and that details would soon be released.

Banks spent his entire 19-year career with the Cubs. He hit 512 home runs, was twice voted the National League's Most Valuable Player, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He was the team's first black player and is still considered the greatest Cubs player by many and the club's most beloved player.

That has been evident in the days since Banks' death. In tribute after tribute, people from around the city and the nation have praised Banks not just for his play, but for his remarkably sunny disposition during his career and in the years since he retired.

"Ernie Banks was a great player and an even better person," Ricketts said in a statement. "He was a kind gentle man who loved his fans as much as they loved him."

Cubs legend Ernie Banks died of heart attack

The lawyer for the family of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks said Sunday that the legendary player died Friday after suffering a heart attack, just a week short of his 84th birthday.

A public service for Banks likely will be Wednesday at Daley Plaza, sources said.

Banks passed away Friday at 83 after a storied 19-year playing career and 40-plus years as an ambassador for baseball and the city of Chicago. At a news conference Sunday, his widow, Liz, spoke briefly and introduced family attorney Mark Bogen, who read a short statement and declined to take questions.

Known worldwide as "Mr. Cub," Banks became the Cubs first African-American player on Sept. 17, 1953, and went on to become a two-time National League Most Valuable Player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977. In 2013, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his goodwill. At the time, he equated the medal to the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bogen praised Banks for his contributions inside and outside of baseball, including support for the military, gay rights, kids with disabilities and numerous charities.

"Ernie Banks was a wonderful husband, a great father and grandfather," Bogen said.

"One of his favorite quotes was, 'Life is a song. Sing it. Life is a game. Play it. Life is a challenge. Meet it. Life is a dream. Realize it.'"

The family also started a Facebook page called Ernie Banks Remembered.

"He loved people and wanted to hear their stories," Bogen said.

The statue of Banks that was removed last fall from outside Wrigley Field has returned to Chicago to be used for the public memorial, said Brent Harris, proprietor of the Kalamazoo shop where the statue was being refurbished. New bolts were added in order for the statue to be mounted in Daley Plaza this week from Wednesday morning through Saturday. In 2008, Banks became the first player in Cubs history to be honored with a statue at Wrigley.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel called Banks a friend who was a great ambassador for the city.

"We are bringing Ernie's statue to Daley Plaza to honor not just one of the best ballplayers of all time, but a great man who made our city proud from the day we first met him in 1953," Emanuel said.

Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Cubs, said Banks loved his fans as much as they loved him.

"We couldn't think of a better way to honor Ernie than to allow those fans a way to pay their final respects to this great man," Ricketts said.

Klay Thompson's teammates can't believe he scored 37 points in a single quarter

Golden State Warriors shooting guardKlay Thompson made NBA history on Friday night, scoring a record-breaking 37 points in a single quarter against the Sacramento Kings. Fans obviously could barely believe what was happening as they watched the score go from 60-60 to 97-73, but what about Thompsons teammates? It turns out they were equally in shock, judging from their postgame reactions, tweets and Instagram posts.

Draymond Green, who managed to sneak in a layup between Thompsons seemingly nonstop jump shots and three-pointers, compared Thompsons effort to the video game NBA 2K15. Or, well, at least he tried to.

You dont get that hot in 2K. Them video games are real now. And that wasnt real. You cant do that in a video game! Green said before pausing, laughing and adding, I dont understand what you all want me to say! Yall are making me look like I dont know how to talk to the media at all right now. I honestly dont know what to tell yall right now.

Stephen Curry took a more humorous approach on Instagram.

The photo is captioned: Still in shock! This guy @klaythompson was unreal tonight! 37! 37! 37! If hes not an All-Star next Thursday..

Harrison Barnes posted a video, showing the team dumping some celebratory cooler water on Thompson.

Here are a few other teammate reactions:

Thompson also had something to say.

2015 Pro Bowl: What you need to know about the Arizona Cardinals players ...

GLENDALE, AZ - Four athletes will represent the Arizona Cardinals at the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl in Glendale on Sunday and as they have all season, theyll all play on the same side.

All four men each of whom plays on the defensive side of the ball were selected to Team Cris Carter in the Pro Bowl Draft conducted earlier this week to compete against Team Michael Irvin

Heres what you need to know about each of these outstanding Cardinals before the Pro Bowl kicks off Sunday at 6 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium:

Patrick Peterson (fourth appearance): Regarded as one of the leagues best cornerbacks, Peterson has been a Pro Bowler in each of his first four NFL seasons. He was crucial to the Arizona Cardinals 31-14 comeback victory over the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 9, intercepting two passes in the fourth quarter and returning the second one for a touchdown to seal the victory.

Peterson had his ups and downs in 2014 he held star wide receiver Dez Bryant without a catch for most of the Cardinals 28-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 2, but he was dominated by WR Julio Jones, who had nearly 200 yards in the Atlanta Falcons 29-18 win over the Cards on Nov. 30. At the Pro Bowl, Peterson said hes looking forward to covering rookie sensation Odell Beckham, Jr., who had 1,305 yards and 12 TDs for the New York Giants this season.

Antonio Cromartie (fourth appearance): Cromartie, who the Cardinals signed to a one-year contract before the 2014 season began, was named to the Pro Bowl last weekend in place of CB Richard Sherman, whose Seattle Seahawks will compete in next weeks Super Bowl.

Cromartie complemented Peterson by intercepting three passes of his own in the regular season, including two in a 24-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 26. The nine-year pro added a fourth INT in Arizonas playoff loss at the Carolina Panthers. Cromarties 31 career INTs are tied for the eighth most among active NFL players.

But Sunday may be the last time Cromartie takes the field as a member of the Cardinals, as hes set to become a free agent at the end of the season. He said hed like to return to the Cards next season but will also explore other options.

Calais Campbell (first appearance): Campbells Pro Bowl selection was long overdue. The defensive end, who was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, had seven sacks this season despite missing two games with an knee injury. His 43.5 career sacks are the sixth most in franchise history.

Campbell set a personal single-game record by recording three sacks in a 19-3 loss at the Seahawks on Nov. 23. The 6-foot-8, 300-pounder is one of the Cardinals most likeable players, as hes active in charities and community events, and hes one of the teams most reliable and consistent athletes, notching at least 58 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in each of his last five seasons.

Justin Bethel (second appearance): The third-year cornerback was invited to his second consecutive Pro Bowl because of his impact on special teams. Bethel, who was a steal for the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, is one of the leagues best in kickoff and punt coverage, and he was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 5 for his blocked field goal in Arizonas win over the Cowboys.

Bethel had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in the 2014 season, and he has three blocked field goals in his last two seasons. He also had his most productive NFL season on defense in 2014, recording a career-high 25 tackles, including 21 solo tackles.

A Flight Attendant Explains How SkyMall Didn't Make Its Money From Its Catalog

Screenshot from skymall.com

I dont think SkyMall really cared about selling you all of that stuff.

Jeff Friedrich is an associate editor at Slate.

I never received a SkyMall memo or went to a Skymall training hour. In the three years I spent working as a flight attendant on Delta Airlines regional flights from 2011 through 2013, no one ever told me how to help customers who wanted to make a SkyMall purchase. In the rare instance in which a passenger asked, I said something like, I think you need to go online or something.

I was the closest thing SkyMall could have had to a sales associate, and I knew nothing about the company. This seemed to me like no way to run a business thats focused on direct retailing. And perhaps it wasnt, particularly in light of Fridays news that SkyMall and its parent company Xhibit Corp. had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Several bogeyman feature in the story of SkyMalls decline, according to Xhibits filing: More planes with Wi-Fi. More passengers with electronic devices. Amazon and eBay. The direct marketing retail industry is crowded, rapidly evolving and intensely competitive, said chief financial officer Scott Wiley in the filing.

But this makes it sound like the SkyMall catalog was the problem, when the truth is that SkyMall (the business) had long since moved on from SkyMall (the catalog). In other words, Skymall had ceased to even be a direct retailing company.

According to Xhibits annual report from 2013, the year it acquired SkyMall, 66 percent of SkyMalls consolidated revenue came from its loyalty business, mainly from 3 partners: Caesars Entertainment, Capital One, and Marriott Rewards. Skymall wasnt making most of its money from its catalogs. By 2013, it earned more money by acting as a middle man for credit card companies and other partners: When a credit card holder spends enough money on a card, these reward programs allow you to redeem reward points for magazine subscriptions, cheap electronics, and other junk. SkyMall handled the fulfillment.

The proximate cause of Skymalls bankruptcy? Xhibit Corp. is a strange, spammy-seeming company with a history of financial losses. In September 2014, it sold the loyalty business for reasons I cant easily ascertain from its financial documents. The company used the proceeds to pay down debt.

SkyMall began its loyalty business in 1999.From a 2001 filing by SkyMall, Inc, we know that the loyalty business accounted for no more than 15 percent of SkyMall's revenue in 2000.We dont know exactly what happened to SkyMall from 2001 through 2013, a period during which it was privately held. But whats happened since the millennium, it seems, is that SkyMall depended less and less on the revenue it made from the catalogs in your seatback, and more and more on revenue from its credit card partnerships.

Maybe that explains why no one trained me to support your SkyMall purchase.

What will Lakers look like when Kobe Bryant returns from injury?

Kobe Bryant had played what will probably be the last game of this season, and perhaps the last of his illustrious career, but once again showed how he has always been one to go out on his own ultra-defiant terms. Bryant was forced to leave in the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers 96-90 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans after he suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder while attempting a dunk. Plans to finish out as a lefty werent working out very well, so he finally relented.

After having the shoulder examined and treated for nearly 30 minutes, Bryant wasnt going to look the part of a beaten man. And he had probably sharpened his acting skills earlier in the day while filming a scene at Smoothie King Center for an upcoming movie starring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg.

When reporters were allowed in the locker room after a lengthy delay, Bryant didnt emerge from the training room with his shoulder covered in ice, but rather wearing a sportcoat and brown leather Louis Vuitton backpack with purple, furry accents and shoulder straps yes, over his b*m right shoulder. Either masking the pain of the harsh reality that a third straight season was going to end in injury or unaware of its severity, Bryant said the shoulder would require him to ice a little bit, so that he could get ready to play Friday in San Antonio.

I feel okay, Bryant said. I feel fine.

Bryant has been the obstinatesort from the time he entered the league as an 18-year-old determined to be recognized sooner or later as the best in the game, unwilling to accept that anyone was better or that he should have to always defer to Shaquille ONeal.

What would a serious shoulder injury mean to him? Kobe thought out loud. He played through a torn labrum before, even averaged 40.6 points per game with the ailment in February 2003. He confronted countless other knick-knack injuries that would derail others. And in the previous two years, Bryants body has broken down but created a more resilient spirit; one that shot two free throws on a ruptured Achilles tendon and played the remainder of a game with broken bone in his left knee.

The Lakers announced that Bryant met with team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo, who discussed the possibility of surgery. But Bryant plans to delay any decision until meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Bryant had recently begun sitting out games and adhering to a 32-minute playing time restriction to preserve his body. Inevitably, the 55,415 regular season and playoff minutes that he has accumulated over his 19-year career came back to haunt him as Bryant sustained his latest injury from simply dunking with two hands, not some violent collision.

The injury is terrible news for the 36-year-old Bryant, who is averaging team highs of 22.3 points and 5.6 assists in a season in which he passed Michael Jordan for third place on the all-time career scoring list and was elected to his 17th all-star game. But Bryant displayed a sense of humor about the setback on Twitter by jokingly telling fans, This is what happens when I pass too much!

The Lakers (12-31) have the second-worst record in the Western Conference and have gone 2-6 without Bryant, including a win over league-leading Golden State. Despite his big scoring games, Bryant is shooting a career-low 37.3 percent from the field and the Lakers have been significantly worse with him on the floor. They are 14 points per 100 possessions better with Bryant off the court, which is the second-worst net efficiency differential for players with at least 1,000 minutes played. Only teammate Jordan Hill is worse.

Coach Byron Scott had discussed the possibility of shutting down Bryant before the season ended and expressed some regret Friday for giving him a heavy load earlier in the season; Bryant averaged 37.1 minutes a game in November before taking a step back last month. But the Lakers have been hit with a rash of injuries this season, with Steve Nash, rookie Julius Randle and Xavier Henry also going with the season-ending variety.

The Lakers have to secure a spot in the top five of the NBA draft lottery to keep a draft pick that would otherwise go to Phoenix, so losing big is probably the desired option for the franchise. But Bryant who is owed $25 million next season, the final year of his contract cant concern himself with a developing draft pick when he would have one last shot to match Jordan with a sixth championship ring. For that to happen, the Lakers would need to acquire a franchise-altering player in free agency or a trade. Given his health problems in recent years and the Lakers inability to retain Dwight Howard in 2013 or to retain Pau Gasol or attract Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James last summer, Bryant was asked Wednesday why a big name star should trust what direction the franchise is taking. Bryant said the Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchaks ability to make opportunistic deals in the past should be taken into account.

Its phenomenal, so much so that the league had to protest a trade that he made, Bryant said, referring to the vetoed Chris Paul deal in 2011. He pulled that off and saved money? What other GM could pull that off? Youve kind of got to lean on the track record of the front office and the decisions that they make. He makes really solid ones.

Bryant admitted recently that he has contemplated retiring after this season but it would be hard to imagine that he would leave the game on such a our note with such a sour team. If he decides to to put his body through yet another grueling rehabilitation he described his last recovery period as worse than climbing Mount Everest the Lakers team that he returns to will be much different. And it will need to be much better to make the comeback worthwhile.

Only Nick Young, Ryan Kelly and Randle are signed to guaranteed deals next season and this summers free agent class will feature the likes of Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Rajon Rondo, who are currently with teams better positioned to compete. Greg Monroe and Goran Dragic are possibilities and Kevin Love might become available if the situation in Cleveland doesnt work out.

If Bryant decides to walk away, he could assist the Lakers and let them use the stretch provision and possibly spread his contract out to $5 million per season over the next five years to give the Lakers more salary cap room to start rebuilding without him. But Bryant was adamant Wednesday that h**l be heavily involved in assisting with the recruiting efforts.

Its a pretty simple message. Its the best organization in the world, best brand in the world, Bryant said of the Lakers. We win championships. Thats what we do. It would be much more than Xs and Os and style of play, things of that nature. Theres no place like winning in Los Angeles, man.

And time will tell if Bryant has exhausted his chances to continue.

Melissa Benoist of 'Glee' will play Supergirl

Melissa Benoist is your new Supergirl.

Right. I think she really was the last actor who hasn't worn a cape yet.

The "Whiplash" and "Glee" actress will star as Superman's equally-talented cousin in a new series on CBS. Benoist has also appeared in "The Good Wife," according to the Huffington Post.

Benoist will portray Kara Zor-El, who also happened to escape Krypton's destruction and ended up an orphan on Earth. She also -- stop me if you'd heard this before -- grew up with adoptive parents, who urged her to keep her powers secret. Therefore she wears a disguise that includes glasses. And she also happens to be related to Superman.

I wonder if she gets along with Lex Luthor's cousin.

Melissa Benoist attends the "Glee" premiere screening at the Paramount lot on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, in Los Angeles. (Photo by Valerie Macon/Invision/AP)

The series will chronicle what happens after a disaster forces Zor-El to use her powers.

Helen Slater played Supergirl in the very forgettable 1984 film of the same name ("Supergirl," not "Forgettable 1984 Film.")

Why Hope Solo got suspended over husband Jerramy Stevens's DUI arrest

After dodging repercussions earlier this month when a judge dismissed a domestic assault case against her, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo found herself making headlines this week in connection with a drunken driving incident involving her husband, ex-NFL player Jerramy Stevens. This incident proved to be enough to goad the U.S. Soccer Federation to suspend Solo from the U.S. Womens National Team for 30 days.

During our current national team camp, Hope made a poor decision that has resulted in a negative impact on U.S. Soccer and her teammates, U.S. Coach Jill Ellis said in a statement posted to USSFs official Web site on Wednesday. We feel at this time it is best for her to step away from the team.

The incident in question occurred early Monday morning, when Solo and her husband were pulled over by police in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Stevens was arrested and charged with driving under the influence; Solo, who was reportedly also drunk and belligerent, was not arrested, but she reportedly still played enough of a role in the incident to raise eyebrows at the USSF.

Two details that may make this incident more unacceptable than previous problemsinclude: 1) the fact that Monday nights altercationoccurred while Solo was attending the current national training camp, and 2) a TMZ report that alleges Stevens was driving a U.S. Soccer official team van at the time of his arrest.

Were told soccer officials were especially upset that Hope allowed her husband to drive the team van potentially leaving the team liable had there been an accident, TMZ reports.

Solo, 33, and Stevens, 35, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have a tumultuous past. The couple married in November 2012, shortly after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo, but charges were never brought because there was insufficient evidence. Stevens was arrested again at his Tampa, Fla., home in 2012 for violating his probation in connection with a marijuana possession charge from October 2010.

Solos suspension will cause her to miss two games with Team USA, one against France on Feb. 8 and one against England on Feb. 13. She was also released from the remainder of training camp.

Solo put out a statement via Twitter on the suspension on Wednesday evening, noting she both accepts and respects USSFs decision. She also apologized for disappointing my teammates, coaches and the Federation who have always supported me.

I think its best for me to take a break, decompress from the stress of the last several months and come back mentally and physically ready to positively contribute to the team, she said.

While USSF confirms Solo, who has played on two Olympic gold-medal winning teams, will be eligible for reinstatement, the team did not guarantee her return. The decision will come only after review and approval by USSF and Ellis, the USSF said on its Web site.

Meanwhile, some voices in the sports community wonder if Solos become too much of a liability. New York Daily News sports columnist Filip Bondy.

What is left unsaid now is that Solos self-destructive behavior has become a great concern to everyone who knows her including teammates, U.S. officials and coaches, Bondy writes. They are trying to stand by her again now, though she is making it more difficult by the day. U.S. Soccer just hopes it can get her to Winnipeg on June 8 for the World Cup opener against Australia, and that her husband wont be driving the van.
