For Chris Sale, leaving White Sox is "bittersweet"

CHRIS SALE TRADED TO RED SOX!!! | Yankees to retire Jeter"s Number | SGU Sports Take

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. Chris Sale is thrilled to be going to Boston to pitch for the Red Sox.

Youre talking about one of the greatest baseball franchises ever, Sale said. Ive always been a big fan of the Boston Red Sox for a few reasons.

The White Sox traded Sale in a blockbuster deal for four prospects during the Winter Meetings Tuesday. The trade bolstered an already strong starting rotation and made the Red Sox an American League favorite to win the pennant.

Youre a perennial contender for making the playoffs, having a realistic chance of winning a World Series, Sale, a five-time All-Star with the Sox, said. Ive always heard great things about the guys on this team in the clubhouse and you have dedicated ownership and front office guys dedicated to winning and winning annually.

Sale, 27, expressed appreciation for the Sox drafting him 13th overall in 2010 and fast-tracking him to the majors when other clubs had doubts, he said.

They were really, they had my back a lot and they gave me opportunities that not a lot of other people would have given me, Sale said. Im very thankful for that.

He said the trade was bittersweet because of ties and relationships established since he was drafted.

Its tough, he said. You build a relationship with these guys and they are like family. Everybody over there is being in your family. You are around these guys probably even more during the year than you are around your family.

But knowing what lies ahead makes it a little bit easier for that transition.

The White Sox trade underscored the front offices failure to win despite having the perennial Cy Young candidate at the top of its rotation. The last time Sale pitched in meaningful games in September was in 2012, when the Sox faded after being in first place for much of the season.

sale, who set the franchise record for strikeouts in 2015, knew he would likely be dealt.

Its kind of like being monkey in the middle. Youre glad when you finally get the ball, Sale said.

It was taxing. There was a lot of speculation. There is story after story and I was getting flooded with text messages from family and friends. It will be nice to get back to normalcy.

Sales wife, Brianne, is expected the couples second child in two weeks. The Red Sox spring training facility is close enough to his Florida home where he can live there during camp. The Sox train in Arizona.

It didnt work out, he said. I really wish it did. I have nothing but really good things to take from that and I appreciate my time with the White Sox but Im looking forward to the next chapter.

Chris Sale trade cleared a path for slimmer Pablo Sandoval with Red Sox at 3B

CHRIS SALE TRADED TO RED SOX!!! | Yankees to retire Jeter"s Number | SGU Sports Take

The Red Sox on Tuesday completed a trade that, as part of the return package for reliever Tyler Thornburg, sent third baseman Travis Shaw to Milwaukee. Then they completed a much bigger swap for Chris sale that, in part, sent infielder Yoan Moncada to the White Sox.

Those moves, of course, leave a vacancy at third base. Sure, Brock Holt is still around, but he"s best deployed as a super-utility sort. That brings us to Pablo Sandoval.

Sandoval, of course, inked a five-year, $95 million contract with Boston prior to the 2015 season, and then had the worst campaign of his career -- with the bat and the glove. Last season, Sandoval played just three games before a season-ending shoulder injury. At this point, it"s fair to ask whether his deal with the Red Sox will wind up as one of the worst free agent contracts in history.

Of course, Sandoval is signed through 2019 with a club option for 2020, so there"s plenty of time for redemption. On that front, the Red Sox even before Tuesday"s horse-trading were planning to give Sandoval a shot to win his old job back. Those deals, as noted, make Sandoval"s return to regular duty much more likely. What also makes that more likely is Sandoval"s current level of conditioning. Please regard ...

Photos can be somewhat deceiving, of course, but Sandoval certainly appears to be at his best in terms of body composition.

Sandoval has long struggled with weight issues and his devotion to conditioning, so consider this a positive early sign. The challenger will be keeping the weight off during the season, when the schedule doesn"t allow for religious adherence to a workout routine. For now, Sandoval looks ready to contribute to a Sox team that on paper is one of the very best in baseball.

Yes, Sandoval has become a bit of a punchline recently, but let"s not forget he was a darn good player for the Giants for a long time. He"s also still just 30, so a renaissance certainly isn"t out of the question. Don"t read too much into offseason reports of better fitness and health, but given Sandoval"s struggles in this regard, it might carry more significance.
