This Champions League Quarterfinal Draw Is So Good

El sorteo de la UEFA Champions League se adelantó en Locura Deportiva

There are only eight teams left standing in the Champions League. This is the stage of the tournament where Europes biggest and best clubs (and Leicester City) will battle for ultimate supremacy. And quite the fascinating battle it will be, because the draw is fantastic:

Every matchup here is great. Atltico Madrid vs. Atltico Madrid Jr.! Obi Wan Celotti vs. Darth Zidane! A rematch of the 2014-15 UCL final!

This draw is maybe a little unfortunate for Leicester, though. Their success in Europe this season closely mirrors their success in England last season, where most teams see that theyre playing Leicester and figure Oh, these guys are jokes, this wont be hard at all, and proceed to play a wide-open game that plays directly to the Foxes strengths.

Atltico will not do this. I called Leicester Atltico Jr. above because the two teams have a very similar playing style, only Atleti do everything better than Leicester and with way better players. Atltico arent great at breaking down deep defenses, though, so maybe Leicester will stymie Atletis attack long enough to keep things close. Either way, it will be fun to see these two purveyors of the much-maligned 4-4-2 slug it out for a semifinal spot.

The Borussia Dortmund-Monaco tie is great as well, in no small part because it ensures someone outside the Bara-Real-Bayern-Juve hegemony makes the semifinals. These are two fun and young and attack-minded squads, though Monacos physical dominance is exactly the kind of thing Dortmund struggle against. However, BVB have Christian Pulisic. Dont count out the wonderteen deciding the tie all by himself with a couple hat tricks in each leg.

The next two matchups are UCL final-worthy heavyweight bouts and are absolutely tantalizing. They are also rematches of big Champions League matches weve seen recently. Its hard to pick a favorite for either tie, and the two clubs that do make it through this round will be the big favorites to go on and win the whole thing. This tournament is awesome.

Lest we forget that the Europa League also matters now that theres a Champions League berth available for the winner of that competition, heres that quarterfinal draw:

Manchester Uniteds best hopes for champions league play next season probably lie here in the Europa League, and it shouldnt be too hard for them to get past Anderlecht and carry on to the semis.

Manchester City top Champions League prize money table

Atletico Madrid vs. FC Rostov | 2016-17 UEFA Champions League Highlights
The ESPN FC crew break down Man City"s win over Barcelona, saying Luis Enrique"s men had no control over the midfield.

Manchester City earned 83.8 million (75.8m) in Champions League prize money last season, topping the table of UEFA payments to clubs.

Although City lost in the semifinals to eventual winners Real Madrid, their share of lucrative British television rights lifted them above Madrid"s 80m slice of the 1.345 billion UEFA prize fund.

Juventus were third with 76.2m despite losing in the last 16, with the Italian champions getting the largest TV rights share of almost 53m.

At over 69m, Chelsea, who fell at the first knockout hurdle, earned nearly as much as runners-up Atletico Madrid --just under 500,000 less.

The Italian TV rights paid out 112m among three clubs, while the Spanish rights paid out 90m between five clubs.

City"s TV payment was almost 47m, with the British rights sharing more than 140m among four clubs.

Manchester City were beaten by Real Madrid in last season"s semifinals.

Clubs got a basic fee of 12m for being in the group stage, plus payments of 1.5m for each win and 500,000 for draws. An escalating series of fees was then paid for advancing through each knockout round.

Madrid earned an extra 15m for winning the final, with Atletico Madrid getting 10.5m as runners-up.

The payments were the first in a three-year cycle of Champions League broadcast and sponsorship deals.

UEFA predicts a 30 percent revenue rise for the 2018-21 seasons. Then, TV rights money distribution will be changed to reward how far a club progresses rather than how much its national rights are worth.

The current formula has annoyed clubs from smaller TV markets for years and last season"s 40 percent share for the market pool was a reduction on the 55/45 split that had operated from 2012-15.

In the Europa League, UEFA paid out 37.8m (34.2m) to Liverpool for their run to the final, slightly more than Sevilla earned for reaching the group stage of the Champions League and then winning the Europa League for a third straight season.

Tottenham were the second biggest earners from the Europa League alone, receiving 20.9m (18.9m), despite only reaching the last-16 of the competition, where they were beaten 5-1 over two legs by Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool profited from another quirk of the market pool system in that their compatriot clubs did relatively poorly, with West Ham and Southampton losing in the qualifying rounds, which meant there were fewer English claimants for the national TV money.

Information from Press Association and The Associated Press was used in this report.

The remarkable stats behind Leicester City"s debut Champions League campaign....

Sporting CP vs. Borussia Dortmund | 2016-17 UEFA Champions League Highlights
By Richard Morgan and SSN HQ

Last Updated: 19/10/16 11:12am

Leicester City "keeper Kasper Schmeichel celebrates his team"s win against FC Copenhagen

Leicester City have struggled in the Premier League so far this season, but they maintained their perfect Champions League record by beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 on Tuesday and are now just one win away from reaching the knockout phase of Europe"s premier club competition.

Leicester"s third straight Champions League victory, including a third clean sheet in a row, guarantees Claudio Ranieri"s side at least a spot in February"s Europa League round of 32 - but they will be setting their sights much higher.

The Foxes currently top Group G with nine points, five more than both FC Copenhagen - to whom they travel on matchday four - and FC Porto.

Ranieri"s side havebecome only the fifth Champions League debutantsto win their first three games and just the third debut side - after Parma and Malaga - to keep three clean sheets in their opening three matches in the competition.

Mahrez has now been involved in more Champions League goals this season than Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo

In total, 64 clubs have previously won their first three group fixtures - and Ranieri will be pleased to know thatall have progressed to the round of 16.

If Ranieri needs further inspiration, plenty of newcomers to the competition have gone even further; Tottenham, Lazio and Bayer Leverkusen have all reached the quarter-finals, while Villarreal powered to the semis in 2005/6.

Riyad Mahrez was Leicester"s match winner at the King Power on Tuesday evening, meaning the Algeria international has been directly involved in four of the Champions League debutants" five goals in the competition this campaign.

Mahrez has even scored one more goal than Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo -the competition"sall-time record goalscorer -has this season.

Riyad Mahrez (centre) is congratulated after scoring the only goal of the game against FC Copenhagen

Player Goals Assists Riyad Mahrez (Leicester) 3 1 Lionel Messi (Barcelona) 3 1 Arkadiusz Milik (Napoli) 3 1 Sergio Aguero (Man City) 3 1 Luis Suarez (Barcelona) 2 2 Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) 2 2

The Foxes incrediblyhave more points in Europethanthe Premier League this season, despite playing five fewer games, sowhat"s behind the difference in Leicester"s fortunes domestically and abroad?

In the Champions League, Ranieri"s men have been more clinical in front of goal, scoring five timesin three contests, compared to an average of one goal a game in the league. And that"s despite actually having two fewer shots on average per game.

Islam Slimani (left) celebrates with Leicester goalscorer Riyad Mahrez at the King Power

Their shooting accuracy is 13 per cent better in the Champions League than in the Premier League, while their conversion rate is also 50 per centhigherin Europe"s elite club competition.

At the back, Wes Morgan and Co are allowing fewer shots on their goal in Europe than in the Premier League, averaging 11 per game in the former.

Leicester City captain Wes Morgan (right) helped his side keep another Champions League clean sheet against FC Copenhagen

That is despite a drop-off in their tackle success rate, although their duel success is up marginally.

Like in the Premier League, Ranieri"s counter-attacking specialists don"t particularly prize possession; they"reaveraging only 40 per cent in the Champions League.

Champions League roundup: Real Madrid cruise but Dortmund stay top

Bayer Leverkusen vs. Tottenham Hotspur | 2016-17 UEFA Champions League Highlights

Real Madrid moved into a commanding position in Group F by cruising to a 5-1 home victory against Legia Warsaw.

Gareth Bale scored his first European goal since December 2014 to give the Champions League holders the lead in the 16th minute with a curled left-foot drive and an own goal by Legias Tomasz Jodlowiec, deflecting in Marcelos shot, doubled their advantage.

Miroslav Radovic pulled one back from the penalty spot but Marco Asensio made it 3-1 in the 37th minute with a low shot on his Champions League debut.

The substitute Lucas Vzquez volleyed home a cross in the 68th minute and the former Juventus striker lvaro Morata rounded off the win by converting a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, who is still waiting for his 100th goal in Uefa competitions, six minutes from time.

Real are second in their group, however, behind Borussia Dortmund who overcame Sporting 2-1 thanks to superb first-half goals by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl. Bruno Csar pulled the Portuguese league runners-up back into the game when an indirect free-kick was back-heeled to him midway through the second half but Borussia held on for a valuable away win.

Elsewhere, the second-half substitute Juan Cuadrado earned 10-man Juventus a 1-0 win at Lyon after Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a couple of superb saves to keep the Serie A leaders afloat. Cuadrado netted the only goal in the 76th minute, seven minutes after replacing Paulo Dybala as Juve were down to 10 men following Mario Leminas sending-off nine minutes into the second half. The Italy keeper Buffon, who made a rare gaffe in the 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw against Spain earlier this month, saved Alexandre Lacazettes 35th-minute penalty and made a couple of decisive saves before Cuadrado struck the winner.

Sevilla are level on points with Juve in Group H after a first-half goal by Samir Nasri gave the Spanish side a 1-0 win at the Croatian title holders, Dinamo Zagreb.

Sevilla missed a string of chances on a slippery surface either side of Nasris clinical 37th-minute finish, when he poked the ball home from a tight angle after a low cross by Mariano Ferreira to leave Dinamo as the only side of 32 teams in the competition yet to score a goal.

Monaco remain top of the increasingly tight Group E after coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow. Lacina Traor opened the scoring for CSKA against his parent club but Bernardo Silva grabbed the equaliser late on. Monaco currently have five points with Tottenham on four following their goalless draw at Bayer Leverkusen, who sit third with three points.

And Andr Silvas injury-time penalty sealed a 2-1 for Porto at Club Brugge. Jelle Vossen latched on to a rebound to put Brugge ahead but the Mexican defen`der Miguel Layn levelled with a long-range effort before Silva converted after Jess Corona had been brought down. Porto move to four points, level with FC Copenhagen, who are also five points behind Leicester City after losing 1-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Permanent Spot in Champions League a Change Not Worth Making

CHELSEA vs PSG (Séan Garnier) , Amazing SKILLS vs supporters, Champions league

LONDON The American promoter Charlie Stillitano could hardly have chosen a worse time to push for change in European soccer.

Stillitano, the chairman of Relevant Sports, runs summer tournaments called the International Champions Cup. It features elite soccer teams from Europe playing one another during their off-seasons in three different countries: the United States, Australia and China. Its novelty factor has drawn sold-out crowds and drummed up television and sponsorship money for, in effect, watching half-fit star players getting into shape for the coming season.

Europes best are coming, is the slogan on its website. Relevant Sports claims to have revolutionized the international soccer landscape by transforming the standard European club preseason tour into something remarkable: a competitive, world-class tournament.

Those words are like something from an old-school boxing promoter: The tournament features the heavyweights of the game, but it fails to mention that the teams are nowhere close to their peak when it comes to performance.

Last week, Stillitano met in London with executives of five English clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United. On satellite radio, Stillitano later talked about how those teams are the elite of the Champions League and, in his view, deserve permanent roles in the tournament and far more money.

Lets call it the money pot created by soccer and the fandom around the world, Stillitano said on a show on Sirius XM. Who has had more of an integral role, Manchester United or Leicester?

He acknowledged that Leicester Citys rise out of nowhere to lead the English Premier League this season is a wonderful, wonderful story. But, the promoter said, you have to look at it from Manchester Uniteds or Chelseas perspective.

Those teams are having a bad season (or several, in Manchesters case). They might not qualify for a place in the next Champions League and that, according to Stillitano, should not be allowed to happen. Essentially, he would want a tournament without relegation for the biggest clubs.

I guess they dont have a birthright to be in it every year, he said, but its the age-old argument U.S. sports franchises versus what they have in Europe. There are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful elements to relegation and promotion, and there are good arguments for a closed system.

Is Stillitano really Silvio Berlusconi in disguise?

Nearly 30 years ago, when Berlusconis team, A.C. Milan, was ruling Europe, the Italian politician and club owner attempted to lead a breakaway of Europes richer clubs and close the door to any upstart from gate-crashing what is now the Champions League.

The word champion has become a misnomer. Nowadays, four clubs from England, Spain, Germany and sometimes Italy qualify some, seemingly perennially for the UEFA Champions League. The fact that A.C. Milan struggles now in Italy, or that both Manchester teams and Chelsea are suffering below-par seasons in England, is no reason to exclude them from the financial spoils of top European competition, according to the Berlusconi/Stillitano theory.

Over the weekend, Leicesters Italian coach, Claudio Ranieri, described that as anti-competitive, a proposal by the elite, for the elite.

You are afraid, Ranieri said. You are not strong. You should ask why is little Leicester doing better than us? Instead, you want to change the system because this year you are weak.

Beyond that, Stillitanos International Champions Cup is in danger this year of being pushed aside on two fronts. Starting in June, the Copa Amrica Centenario, a special edition of the South American continental championship, will be played in 10 American cities to mark the events 100th anniversary.

The top South American players who normally would take part in the off-season tours by the big European clubs will instead be playing in the United States for their national teams.

In addition, the majority of the best European players will also be in action in June and July, when their national teams play in an expanded Euro 2016 tournament in France.

Barcelona is the champion of champions in world soccer at the moment, but it wont be traveling to Australia, China or the United States to play in the world-class I.C.C. this summer.

How could Barcelona take part? Its top three stars Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Surez will be playing for their countries at the expanded Copa Amrica, while much of the rest of the team will be trying to defend Spains title at the Euro.

Barcelona will have a presence in the United States this summer. It will hold summer camps for children in nine cities as it increases its awareness abroad, the clubs president, Josep Bartomeu, told me on the same day in another London hotel just a few hundred yards from where Stillitano met with the club officials.

Bartomeu said then that his club, like all the rest, cannot ignore the rising popularity of soccer in the United States. But equally important, the club the reigning Spanish, European and Club World Cup champion appreciates that athletes do have a breaking point.

The off-season is when Messi, Neymar and their teammates can finally rest and recuperate and spend time with their families after a grueling nine-month season or even undergo the surgeries needed to repair the damage taken from chasing so many trophies.

The schedules are too crowded already without further revolutionizing the international soccer landscape.

Champions League: Paris Saint-Germain holds Chelsea

Story highlights
  • European Champions League last 16 began Tuesday
  • Paris Saint-Germain holds Chelsea 1-1 in French capital
  • Branislav Ivanovic scores crucial away goal
  • Shakhtar Donetsk finishes goalless at home to Bayern Munich

Follow us at @CNNSport and like us on Facebook

Paris Saint-Germain was held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Chelsea in the French capital, while Bayern Munich finished goalless in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk.

PSG will be the most annoyed -- Laurent Blanc's side had chance after chance to win the tie and put a dent in Chelsea's Champions League hopes.

In the end, Edinson Cavani's strike ensured parity after Branislav Ivanovic, the Serbia defender, had given the visitors a first half lead.

It could have been so different for the home side had it not been for Thibaut Courtois, the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Courtois denied PSG time and time again, much to delight of his manager, Jose Mourino.

"We could have lost, so I think the result is a positive one," Mourinho told ITV.

"I don't say very good because it depends on the result of the second leg but it is a positive result against a very good team with fantastic technical players. It was a difficult match.

Asked if Chelsea got away with it, he added: "When you see the performance of our goalkeeper you have to say yes, he made two or three important saves in the game.

"I am happy with the result because two legs is now one leg with everything to be decided at Stamford Bridge."

Mourinho, who is hoping to become the first man to win the competition with three different clubs, cut a relieved figure at the full time whistle.

Time and time again the visitors were indebted to its goalkeeper, Courtois, who produced a number of fine stops to deny the French champion.

At just 22, it's frightening to think how good the Belgian could become.

Here, against a PSG side determined to take some sort of lead to Stamford Bridge in three weeks time, he ensured Chelsea got out of jail.

Laurent Blanc's men began the better of the two teams and Courtois was forced into action within the first 10 minutes.

Cavani, seemingly constantly linked with a move to England, found space on the left and when his cross was headed powerfully towards goal by Blaise Matuidi, Courtois was forced to fly into action.

The Belgian goalkeeper was soon busy again, this time saving from Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the forward's header bounced towards goal, while Cavani also went close with an effort which was tipped away.

Chelsea, seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, slowly began to grow into the contest but it still came as something of a surprise when it took a 36th minute lead.

John Terry, the captain, crossed from the left and after Gary Cahill had flicked the ball on, Ivanovic rose unopposed to head the ball into the far corner.

That goal was harsh on the home side, which emerged revitalized after the interval and was soon level.

Matuidi, one of the most impressive performers on the field, found space on the left and his cross was headed home by the unmarked Cavani.

Chelsea, normally solid and resolute in defense, was struggling to repel the French champion and Courtois was forced to save from Ibrahimovic once again as the Swede waltzed his way through the defense.

Cavani, alert to the rebound, thought he was set to give side the lead when the ball broke, but his effort was blocked by Csar Azpilicueta.

PSG, third in its domestic league, continued to dominate and Cavani wasted a glorious opportunity with 10 minutes remaining when he slid his effort inches wide of the far post.

Ibrahimovic might have stolen a dramatic winner at the death but his header was brilliantly tipped away by the overworked Courtois.

Chelsea will now be confident of progressing to the quarterfinal stage with the second leg to come at Stamford Bridge in three weeks time.

Last season, it was beaten 3-1 in Paris at the quarterfinal stage before recovering to win the second leg 2-0 and progress on the away goals rule.

At least this time it heads home level and with designs on the last eight.

"Both teams were feeling each other in the first half," said Chelsea captain Terry.

"Thibaut Courtois pulled off some great saves and we go away with a happy draw.

"Last year we made it very difficult for ourselves but we are in a lot better position now.

"PSG keep the ball very well, David Luiz's range of passing is very good so they were able to stretch us but I thought it was very even tonight.

"Branislav Ivanovic has been different class defensively this year and always has been, attacking he always poses a great threat."

In the night's other game, Bayern Munich was held to a goalless draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in Lviv.

It was a frustrating night for the 2013 winner which had Xabi Alonso sent off in the second half.

The Spanish midfielder, who was celebrating the occasion of his 100th appearance in the competition, was dismissed with 25 minutes remaining after picking up a second yellow card.

Shakhtar, which is forced to play its Champions League home games over 1,200 kilometers away from its home stadium because of the ongoing conflict in the region, had not played a competitive fixture since December following the winter break.
