Jimmy Fallon"s hand injury story is even grosser than you imagine

Jimmy Fallon has been on a two-week hiatus from The Tonight Show after a hand injury landed him in the hospital. Monday (July 13) he was back, with a cast on his hand and gruesome story about how he almost lost a finger.

I am so happy to be back after our two-week break. In fact, I was so excited, I ran around the office giving everyone a high-four, jokes Fallon during the monologue. You should see the other guy. The other guys a glass table. And hes dead now.

But after the monologue, Fallon really does get into the nitty-gritty of what happened.

What happened is I tripped and fell in my kitchen, on a braided rug that my wife loves and I cant wait to burn it to the ground, says Fallon. I tripped and fell and I caught my fall, so Im getting up and my finger is sideways. So I go, Oh my G*d, did I just break my finger? This is the lamest thing in the whole wide word. It looked fake. It looked like a cheap horror movie where you see a broken finger, it looks like that.

So I wrap my hand in a towel and get in a cab and go to the emergency room and I go, I think I broke my finger. And they go, You didnt break your finger, its a thing called ring avulsion," he continues. If you Google it but its graphic images, so dont Google it but ring avulsion, its a real thing. Basically what it is is my ring got caught on the countertop while I was going down and stuck there and pulled my finger off.

Fallon then says he had to transfer hospitals because the one he was at doesnt do this kind of microsurgery. But at Bellevue, he met surgeon Dr. David Chu. Awesome doctor, he comes in and has a bowtie and cowboy boots. Thats my doctor! Thats my guy! says Fallon. I knew it when he walked in, this guys gonna save my finger.

The Tonight Show host also says apparently the odds arent great with these types of injuries. Usually they just cut your finger off, he says. So this guy did surgery for like six hours, microsurgery, so its under a microscope. He has to take a vein out of my foot and he did it, he saved my finger.

I wont get feeling back for eight weeks. I was in the ICU for 10 days, and I gotta say the nurses and the doctors at Bellevue Hospital, thank you so much for taking care of me. I love you guys.
