The Honesty of Carrie Fisher

CNN anchor CHOKES UP with announcement of Carrie Fisher"s death

Oh, Carrie Fisher, gone way too soon. And now your mother, Debbie Reynolds. The startling loss this week of one of Hollywoods great mother-daughter pairs was another blow in an unnerving year. You could call it a Hollywood ending, if by that you mean one that is larger and weirder than real life, and that tugs mightily at strong emotions.

A suggestion to grieving admirers: Make time for another viewing of Singin in the Rain, made when Ms. Reynolds was 19. Watch her becoming a star, easily holding her own against two older leading men.

But even though Ms. Fisher pulled off a strikingly similar feat making an immortal movie at 19, with two male stars there is a better way to honor her than by revisiting Star Wars.

Read her books. They are works where misery and brilliance commingle with wit, the creations of an actual person who had many layers and is worth getting to know, as opposed to Princess Leia, who has none and is not.

Anyone could have predicted that a little girl whose mom and dad were Ms. Reynolds and Eddie Fisher would grow up with an abundance of, lets call them issues, and that these might lead to a life involving alcohol and drugs, and detox and rehab. All of which happened to Ms. Fisher, in profusion.

But who would have predicted that this product of Hollywood inbreeding (she called herself that) would have turned celebrity family dysfunction into such memorable writing? Her semi-autobiographical novel Postcards From the Edge, and memoirs like Wishful Drinking and Shockaholic, are hilarious, bluntly beautiful and deserve as much lasting recognition as her contributions to Star Wars.

You could liken Ms. Fisher to Dorothy Parker, and many have, though Parkers work seems musty in comparison to Ms. Fishers, which hits like a fresh slap of weirdness. When she wrote about depression and addiction, she had a humaneness and directness that feel honest.

When she turned to shock therapy, it punched the dark lights out of my depression, she wrote. Your whole life you hear about this terrifying treatment that turns you into a vegetable, only to finally find out that it had all the charming qualities of no big deal. Sort of like getting your nails done, if your nails were in your cerebral cortex.

Let others remember Ms. Fisher for her outer-space hairdos and wisecracks that were George Lucass dim idea of witty (Would somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way?). Heres to what she created on her own: her idiosyncratic way of writing about how she struggled with her mind, her memory, her weight.

What I didnt realize, back when I was this twenty-five-year-old pinup for geeks in that me myself and iconic metal bikini, was that I had signed an invisible contract to stay looking the exact same way for the next thirty to forty years. Well, clearly Ive broken that contract.

Heres to her dispatches from a fisher-priceless family life: my mother, who incidentally lives next door to me, she calls me to this day and says, Hello, dear, this is your mother, Debbie. (As opposed to my mother Vladimir or Jean-Jacques.)

And heres to her honesty: I heard someone once say were only as sick as our secrets, Ms. Fisher wrote in Wishful Drinking. If thats true, then this book will go a long way to rendering me amazingly well.

John Kerry, Russia, Carrie Fisher: Your Wednesday Briefing

Carrie Fisher Dies at 60 | ABC News

Some officials deny that the country is experiencing an epidemic. But others estimate that 500,000 cases are undiagnosed, in addition to the 850,000 people known to be infected and the 220,000 who have died since the late 1980s.

Separately, Russian officials have conceded in interviews with our reporter that the country carried out one of the biggest doping conspiracies in sports history.

Questions on Americas nuclear future.

If former Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, Mr. Trumps pick for energy secretary, is confirmed, he will oversee a department that runs the nations nuclear-weapons labs. He will also most likely be pressed to resume the testing of nuclear weapons.

Some experts fear that testing the U.S. arsenal for the first time since 1992 would risk an arms race. Others wonder if the weapons still work.

This case of cyber meets securities fraud should serve as a wake-up call for law firms around the world, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan said.

Death of a spiritual matriarch.

Tributes continue to pour in for Carrie Fisher, who died Tuesday morning at age 60, days after a heart attack during a flight.

Our film critic A. O. Scott remembers Ms. Fisher for changing a popular understanding of female heroism, calling her the foremother of Hermione Granger and Katniss Everdeen and of countless latter-day Disney princesses. Others pointed out that the actress had accomplished plenty outside the Star Wars franchise.

And many fans remembered Ms. Fisher, who was candid about her struggles with bipolar disorder, by speaking out on Twitter about their experiences with mental illness.

Back Story

This year has produced some momentous events, so lets take a moment and look back at some of the words they inspired.

Britains decision to leave the European Union started many discussions about post-truth politics. Its rise in use led to Oxford University Press naming it word of the year.

In Germany, the equivalent, postfaktisch, is the top word of 2016, according to the Society for the German Language. The state-sponsored agency bases its yearly choices on significance, rather than frequency. Third place went to Silvesternacht, or New Years Eve, which has taken an unpleasant meaning since hundreds of women in a German city were attacked as they celebrated the end of 2015.

Across the Atlantic, Merriam-Webster chose surreal, which it says was trending in moments of crisis this year. People who saw The Lobster, including our movie critic, used it in the original sense, to describe artistic expression, too.

But a word Austria is celebrating stands out.

The yearlong campaign for presidency, which nearly gave the country its first far-right leader since World War II, was the basis for the postponement of the repeat runoff of the election of the federal president.

Its otherwise known as Bundesprsidentenstichwahlwiederholungsverschiebung.

Palko Karasz and Patrick Boehler contributed reporting.

Carrie Fisher, a Princess, a Rebel and a Brave Comic Voice

Remembering Carrie Fisher

Emily Nussbaum, the New Yorkers television critic, remarked on Twitter that the episode was the key-to-all-mythologies of female comedy, which may actually be an understatement. The character of Rosemary Howard certainly embodies the glories and contradictions of second-wave feminism, and Lizs ambivalence about her is a barbed and brilliant illustration of the anxieties of female comic influence. But the casting of Ms. Fisher whose performance on the show is somehow at once wildly winking and completely on-script adds about 12 dimensions of meta.

Anyone watching that episode will already know that Liz Lemon is a rabid Star Wars fan. Her default Halloween costume is Princess Leia Organa. Later, when she wants to get out of jury duty, Liz will coil her hair over her ears and dress in a belted linen djellaba, confident that no judge would ever impanel such a cosplaying nerd. Shes wrong about that, and also wrong to sell out her Leia devotion, treating it as a source of embarrassment rather than power and pride. The princess allows Liz and not only Liz to be both geek and warrior, s*x symbol and samurai, free spirit and prisoner of the corporate Death Star.

Liz Lemon has two mothers, both played by Carrie Fisher. That statement can stand as a fictional index of Ms. Fishers extensive real-world influence. Princess Leia now General Organa of the Rebel Alliance will always define her as an actress, something she claimed, in a recent Rolling Stone interview, not to mind. I like Princess Leia, she said. I like how she was feisty. I like how she killed Jabba the Hutt.

That feistiness has been Leias principal legacy, the early sign of a shift in the understanding of female heroism and the meanings of the word princess that has rippled through popular culture in the past 40 years. Leia is a foremother of Hermione Granger and Katniss Everdeen and of countless latter-day Disney princesses. She also foretold the recent, somewhat belated feminist turn in the Star Wars cycle itself. All of a sudden, and at long last, Leia is not the only battle-ready heroine in the galaxy, having been joined by Rey in The Force Awakens and Jyn in Rogue One.

Ms. Fishers legacy may rest at least as much on her literary voice, on the alter egos she created on the page, as on any character she played onscreen. She was hardly the first or the only Hollywood figure to spill the beans about s*x, drugs and other show-business shenanigans. Nor was she unique among writers in the way she mined her own painful history of addiction and mental illness for harrowing and humorous copy.

But Postcards From the Edge, her 1987 roman clef about a movie star named Suzanne Vale with a cocaine problem and a difficult movie-star mom, bristles with a bravery and candor that still feels groundbreaking. She went there, long before that was a catchphrase, and before that particular there was such a crowded piece of real estate.

In her Rolling Stone interview and elsewhere, Ms. Fisher liked to cite Dorothy Parker as an inspiration. she carried that tradition forward, and the frank, funny, confessionally inclined and dirty-minded women who now flourish on television and in print the list is too long; they know who they are are in her debt.

Youre my kid! Rosemary Howard cries out to Liz Lemon. An echo of the famous assertion of paternity in the Star Wars saga. And also an acknowledgment of Carrie Fishers own undeniable status as a matriarch.

Carrie Fisher is being treated in an intensive care unit after a serious medical emergency on a flight, according to her brother.

On Friday night, Todd Fisher told The Associated Press that his sister was receiving excellent care, but said that he could not classify her condition. He had earlier told the AP that she had been stabilized and was out of the emergency room.

In a subsequent interview,he said many details about her condition or what caused the medical emergency are unknown, and much of what had been reported was speculation.

"We have to wait and be patient," he said. "We have so little information ourselves."

TMZ and theLos Angeles Timesreported that the actress, best known for playing Princess Leia in theStar Warsfilm franchise, was on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she went into cardiac arrest. TMZ reports that the emergency occurred about 15 minutes before landing, and an EMT on the plane administered CPR before landing. The plane arrived just after noon PT and Fisher, 60, was rushed by paramedics to the UCLA Medical Center.

Fisher"s daughter, Billie Lourd, was spotted at the hospital, as was Fisher"s French bulldog, Gary.

Peoplereports that Fisher was in London to film Season 3 of sitcomCatastrophe, which streams on Amazon in the USA. Celebrities immediately took to social media to express their well-wishes for Fisher, including herStar Warsco-star Mark Hamill.

Fisher has been making waves recently promoting her latest memoir,The Princess Diarist, based on the diaries she kept while starring in the original Star Warsfilm as a 19-year-old. In the book she reveals, among other things, that she and herco-star Harrison Ford had an affair on the set that they kept secret for decades.
